THE EDENDALE EXPERIENCE: THINKING, LEARNING, CREATING

13 February 2013

Next issue: 27 February 2013

Message from the Principal Kia ora, Kia orana, Namaste, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei, Ni hao ma, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Asalam alikum!

Welcome to our 2013 School Year

A very warm welcome back to school; we hope that you have all had a wonderful summer break with your

families. A special welcome to our forty new families whose children started at Edendale last week; we do

hope that you enjoy being a part of the Edendale family and Sandringham community!

A special welcome to our new teaching staff; we welcomed new teachers Jonathan Jackson and Tessa Ratcliffe

(Year 4, Year 5-6) to Edendale last week. We also welcomed back Charmaine Herman, (who now has two

young children of her own) as a Year 2 class teacher, Bridget Lawrence (who has spent the past year teaching

as a volunteer in Zambia) to a position teaching a Year 5-6 class and John Brunton, (previously working

part-time), who has now taken up a position teaching in the Year 3 team for 2013.

We will shortly be advertising for a further Year 1 teacher as our classes are filling fast.

We currently have two teacher trainees at Edendale; we hope you enjoy your practicum and find it worthwhile.

The year has begun smoothly; it is wonderful to see that our students have settled in well and are once again

ready for a year of high quality learning. This year we are holding our school assemblies fortnightly on

Mondays at 10:00am starting this week; please join us if you would like to sit in on an occasional assembly or

if your child is doing something special, such as being an emcee. Class teachers will let families know

if awards are being presented so that you may come along and share the occasion.

Teaching, Learning and Goal-setting

This year, teachers will be continuing to use ’Teaching as Inquiry’ when thinking about their teaching practice

and student learning. The key areas for inquiry are:

1. Inquiry into students’ learning: Teachers will investigate the outcomes and success of their teaching as well

as implications for future teaching: Collecting, collating, analysing and interpreting data. Teachers will think

and talk about: Is there something I need to change? What are the next steps for learning?

2. Focus of the Inquiry: What is the next priority for groups and individuals in terms of target setting, learning

intentions/WALTs - we are learning to… and success criteria.

3. Inquiry into My Practice: What will I do differently in terms of: content, strategies, planning and organisa-

tion as well as further learning and professional development.

When you meet with teachers for student goal-setting, the focus will be key target setting in core curricular as

well as other areas particular to individuals. Teachers will also talk about the Inquiry Learning studies and the

inclusion of student voice in learning activities (what teachers can do to help students understand their

learning and make it enjoyable). Booking forms will be coming home with this newsletter. Please do take the

opportunity to book in and come along and talk with your child’s teacher about student learning goals for this

term.

Three-way Conferences for Student Goal—Setting will be held on Tuesday 26 and Wednesday 27 February from 3:10 - 6:00pm.

Edendale Family Picnic and Games Evening

Questions, Issues or Complaints

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, concerns or complaints. If at any time you wish to meet with your child’s teacher about something specific please pop in before or after school to make an

appointment. Please let the teacher know what it is that you’d like to discuss so that they can be

well-prepared prior to meeting with you. Classrooms are very busy places in the mornings before school and

immediately after, and it is not always possible for the teacher to meet with you at these times without notice.

Please make an appointment to see either Team Leaders or Deputy Principals if you have queries that remain

unanswered. Please contact Rosemary directly for serious issues.

Term One Theme and Values

This term we are ‘Relating to Others and Thinking about our Learning.’ We have a focus on being ‘Kind and

Considerate’ for Values. Our School-wide Inquiry is Sustainability- Building a Sense of Community: Who do we

think we are?

Summer Clothing

We hope you are all enjoying the long hot summer we are experiencing this year. Please remember it is

compulsory for students to wear sunhats when outside in the sun; we’ve noticed some of our students wearing

warm woolly winter hats instead; these are unsuitable for our current weather. A number of students are also

wearing heavy sweaters which will cause overheating on these sunny days. Please ensure that students are

dressed appropriately for the weather on hot summer days. Teachers will encourage students who come to

school wearing numerous layers of clothing to take off their jackets, etc prior to participating in sports,

fitness programmes and vigorous activity. Thank you.

Road Safety

A reminder to parents and caregivers to park away from yellow lines and driveways when picking

or dropping their child/children to or from school. Use the crossing at the lights in front of the school if you are

using Sandringham Road. Please note that Constable Peter Hoskyn makes random checks on Sandringham

Road and Shorwell Street and has also requested people to be safe and follow road safety rules.

Edendale Playground Taonga Winners (Positive Behaviour Tickets)

This year, we are already spotting students in the playground who are ‘doing the right thing!’ Teachers look

for positive playground behaviours while they are on duty, give our students tickets and these go into a draw

each assembly. Winners receive sports equipment to have in their class for the fortnight until the next

assembly and one student’s name is drawn to win the Taonga (treasure) to take to their classroom for the

week. The following students were spotted:

Keeping our grounds clean and tidy: Olive—Rm15.

Playing nicely with others: Samantha—Rm2, Aryan—Rm11, Matteo—Rm12, Olivia—Rm9, Molly—Rm4,

Lily—Rm9, Pearl—Rm10, Raisha—Rm10, Florentine—Rm11, Eva—Rm2, Sadie—Rm21, Bill—Rm21,

Megan—Rm16, Millan—Rm12.

Helping others: Sophie—Rm18.

Other great behaviour: Fatima—Rm10, Caitlyn—Rm16, Lucy—Rm18, Eva—Rm21, Marco—Rm7,

Millan—Rm12, Charlie—Rm10.

Dogs at School

If you are walking your dog at the same time as bringing your children to and from school, please ensure that

you securely tie all medium/large dogs up at the fence outside Room 30, no dogs are to be left unattended,

however we would prefer medium and large dogs not to be brought to school. Small dogs must be carried at

all times within the school grounds. Thank you.

School Playground After Hours

A reminder that our adventure playgrounds close at 3:30pm daily. Please note that all students playing

on school equipment after hours must be directly supervised by parents/caregivers. Thank you for

your co-operation.

Our PTA is looking for Class Reps for 2013. If you would like to represent your child’s class please let the teacher know so he/she can forward your details on to the PTA. The Parent Rep may be required to:

Pass on PTA information to parents/caregivers and class teachers

Promote fundraisers and help organise aspects of fundraising projects with class teachers e.g. collecting raffle items

Inform PTA committee members of any suggestions, ideas or feedback from parents/caregivers

Please note that attending PTA meetings is not required. However all are welcome to do so.

If you have any questions about this please email us at [email protected]

Edendale’s very own walking school bus is back in action! We all know it’s good for our kids to exercise but it’s hard to find the time every day. Walking to

school is a practical, fun way to encourage them to exercise regularly. On the Edendale Energetic Express, your kids can walk to school every day but you don’t

have to! There are currently 2 routes - one down Sandringham Road starting from Kenneth Ave and a 2nd

route down Kiwitea, Calgary and Arabi Streets, turning down Mars Avenue. Both arrive at school

by 8.40am. Parents and/or caregivers are asked to walk 1-2 days each week. If you are interested in finding out more, contact Carolyn (Kiwitea Street start) on ph 620 2911, or Amy

(Kenneth Avenue start) on 021 255 0000.

News from Edendale’s PTA

Welcome Back

We hope everyone had a lovely holiday and are now ready for a great school year! We are looking forward to an outstanding year in working with our community to raise money for the children of Edendale Primary School.

The two main issues we will be focusing on:

New PTA Members

We are very concerned about our low PTA member numbers! With low numbers we are not able to do very many fundraising events. If you would like to have a bigger variation of fundraisers or even PTA run school community events you need to join the PTA. Now would be a great time to come and join us as our first meeting of the year will be on the 21st of February. At this meeting we will be setting dates for fundraising events. If you would like to join us you can either email us on [email protected] or show up to the meeting. The meeting starts at 7pm and is held in the meeting room (off the office foyer).

Upcoming Events in Term 1:

Movie Night

Sausage Sizzle

New Entertainment book coming out…
