W est Spring Secondary School provides a values-driven, student-centric education. It is values-driven to equip West Spring ladies and gentlemen with an

inner compass, inculcating in them the school values of respect, responsibility, resilience, integrity and care, to guide them through the many changes in life. It is student-centric, catering to different profiles and needs, to bring out the best in every child.

West Spring educators are at the heart of all these efforts. They serve with joy and a big heart. Whether as an individual or as a team, they have been true in their mission to nurture students to continually pursue excellence, to give them a broad and deep foundation for a lifelong journey in learning.

Working with school leaders and teachers, my School Advisory Committee (SAC) members and I affirm the good work that educators in West Spring are doing, which is focussing attention on the different needs of the students. The SAC continues to advise and support the school by providing opportunities for every child, regardless of their background or their starting point. Together, we lift up those who need it most, placing them in positions for success.

For example, the SAC has supported students on financial assistance, for academic, Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) and other schooling needs. The SAC has given out academic scholarships and awards to deserving students, provided students with equipment required for CCA to nurture their talents, and used discretionary funds to sponsor their overseas trips. In 2014, the SAC supported the set-up of the school’s After-School Engagement Centre – the Spring.

A t West Spring, school leaders and staff create opportunities for all our students to learn and succeed, through different ways of learning, multiple pathways,

continuously in progression. Aligned to our school values of respect, responsibility, resilience, integrity and care, we develop a culture of life-long learning, positive contribution, and active citizenry in our students for Singapore.

sAC CHAirmAn’s Message

West Spring educators are at the heart of all these efforts. They serve with joy and a big heart.

prinCipAL’s Message

Turn each day into a learning day, and each

opportunity into a lesson. Learn from everyone

you meet or interact with. The richer our learning

experiences, the wiser choices we make in life.

Be reflective and keep improving to truly become

Global Citizens of Character and Learning.

I would like to assure parents of our commitment to fulfil the potential of your children, whom you have entrusted with the school. With your support, we will keep our flame burning bright!

Mr leslie yeochairpersonschool advisory committeeWest spring secondary school

Our students have special talents. To nurture ladies and gentlemen in pursuit of excellence, West Spring recognises that a positive attitude, deep skills and broad experiences matter if they are to perform and achieve. Our academic and co-curricular programmes, as well as Applied Learning Programme (ALP) in Media Literacy and Learning for Life Programme (LLP) in Sports, have encouraged our students to go beyond the classroom to build character, strengthen skills in communication and thinking, and enhance competencies and dispositions for learning.

Our teachers sow the seeds for lifelong learning. Through their lessons, co-curricular activities and interactions with students, they challenge the students’ limiting beliefs of themselves, encourage them to break away from narrow definitions of success and think anew about opportunities and possibilities. They believe in their students, that everyone excels at different things, in different ways, and that they can all excel if they apply diligent efforts in their endeavours.

To our graduating cohort of students going into institutes of higher learning, the workplace, and the community, learning will not stop when you leave school. Turn each day into a learning day, and each opportunity into a lesson. Learn from everyone you meet or interact with. The richer our learning experiences, the wiser choices we make in life. Be reflective and keep improving to truly become Global Citizens of Character and Learning.

Together with the support from our stakeholders – the School Advisory Committee (SAC), parents and partners, West Spring makes learning relevant and meaningful to our students at this stage of their journey. This yearbook captures the events, activities and people in a year filled with learning moments and cherished relationships. Happy Memories!

The Art Curriculum in West Spring aims to holistically nurture awareness, appreciation and passion for expression in the visual art through artistic knowledge and art-making process.

Our process-based art learning journey at West Spring provides all student-artists the fundamentals of Elements of Art and Principles of Design from Lower Secondary through:

• Exploration and Experimentation of different materials and media

• Exploration, Research and Conceptualisation of themes

• Exploration and Development of Self-Expression

The Music Curriculum in West Spring aims to nurture an awareness and appreciation of music alongside a passion for musical expression through various music-making opportunities and performances. Music programmes outside of the curriculum are also planned with the aim of boosting and supplementing the students’ individual learning experience holistically through exposure to music performances. Students had the opportunity to attend two different genres of performances at the Esplanade in March and July 2014.

In 2014, the CPA Department embarked on several exciting teaching and learning strategies to engage our CPA students. While Microsoft Office skills (Word, Spreadsheet, Powerpoint) continue to be core modules in CPA, the potential of Cloud technology and its affordances was also explored. Scratch Programming which also has become a mainstay in the new CPA Syllabus continues to be enjoyed by our students who grapple at animation and game-making challenges.

In order to adequately equip our students with 21st Century Competencies, Google Apps For Education (GAFE) was introduced to our students as a central platform for their learning. GAFE incorporates Gmail and a wide range of online collaborative tools such as Google Drive and Google Documents.

New Secondary One students had tremendous amounts of fun creating vector designs in Inkscape. Vector designs have become a central feature in graphic design for online and mobile graphics. Potentially, these students are equipped with industry-ready design skills.

Our Secondary Two students built up their CPA competencies computers in everyday life, Inkscape & Scratch Animation. The use of mobile carts and iPads were explored with these classes to take learning outside the labs.

For the Upper Secondary Classes, the Flipped Classroom strategy was utilised by incorporating it into the CPAchannel on YouTube. This transition to an online slides presentation in video format meant that students have quick access to learning content on their home computers and mobile devices.

Gamification, the use of game elements in non-game setting, was also used extensively for our Upper Secondary classes to inject fun into their learning. For our Secondary Four classes, preliminary findings look promising as Mid-Year and Preliminary results showed a marked improvement in grades and work quality for students engaged in gamification. Our teachers who were involved in the Action Research (AR) presented these findings to at an internal Professional Hour Sharing.

For our Secondary Three students, a variant of the Gamification strategy was developed in the form of CPACyberCommand. Incorporating GoogleDocs, facebook and continual formative assessments,

CPACyberCommand has been immensely enjoyed by the 3H students who find the positive competition beneficial to their learning progress.

In 2014, Google Life transformed the way our teachers and students exchanged and processed information, communicated and brainstormed ideas. Teachers and students attended workshops to have a greater understanding of Google Apps for Education and subsequently used these apps widely for teaching and learning.

Our holistic approach to teaching and learning acknowledges that inquiry and problem solving contribute to our students’ development of thinking skills and strategies. Hence, to equip them with skills to face the rapidly changing demands of the 21st century, teachers

constantly seek opportunities to infuse ICT in their lessons. For instance, in Secondary One Science classes, iPad technology has enhanced learning for our students. Students complete their learning tasks on their own by exploring the different parts of the human heart through the iPad App Heart Surgery.

To focus on building our students’ experience and comfort with integrated technology, there are mobile carts of laptops or iPads for students to pick up various forms of technology easily. They use Google Education, Piktochart for Infographics, Toondoo Comics for Storyboarding, Popplet for mindmapping and Windows Movie Maker for Video Production. These programs have assisted them in their research and presentations and to learn and think visually.

Educating our students on the potential hazards in cyberspace and inspiring them to use the Internet in positive ways is also a top priority. An assembly talk on Copyright and Gaming by Touch Cyber Wellness and senior cyber wellness student ambassadors was held on 4th February, in line with Safer Internet

Day 2014. This year, we also appointed Secondary One Cyber Wellness Ambassadors to spread cyber wellness awareness. In August, they carried out a fun-filled photo-taking activity where students pledged towards Safe and Responsible Internet.

Formal Cyber Wellness workshops by Touch Cyber Wellness were conducted for Secondary One students during their camp. 98% of these students felt they are now more equipped with knowledge of the consequences and ways to overcome internet addiction and cyberbullying.

To maintain effective communication using technology, our school website continues to be dynamic and supports social media and newsletter subscriptions. In 2015, we look forward to communicating with parents and students through SNAAPP, our new school notification app on smart phones.

On 5 April 2014, West Spring Display Band participated in SYF 2014 Arts Presentation for Band (Display) which was held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. This day brought together the school leaders, teachers, alumni and the current students of West Spring to support the Band. Everyone displayed a combined effort to cheer and wave their colourful banners. The West Spring family was also clad in rainbow-coloured supporter T-shirts which were designed to match the theme of this year’s performance.

It was indeed a day of celebration as we were credited with two awards. West Spring Display Band was awarded the Certificate of Distinction and was also recognised for our Outstanding Visual performance. We were invited to perform our SYF performance at the SYF Celebrations held at Gardens By the Bay, an event graced by the Education Minister, Mr. Heng Swee Keat.

These achievements serve as an encouragement to us as ‘the dreams that [we] dared to dream really [did] come true’. West Spring Display Band will continue to work towards improving ourselves and strive towards greater achievements.

highlights oF 2014

The highlight for our volleyball team in 2014 was the West Zone Volleyball Championships. Both our ‘B’ and ‘C’ division boys participated in the annual event with much aplomb. Our ‘B’ division boys trained hard and held up well during friendlies against traditionally strong volleyball teams like Zhong Hua and Yishun Town Secondary. With experience and confidence under our belt, we went into the competition as one of the dark horses.

During the competition, the team gave it their best shot and was neck-to-neck in points with Bukit Panjang Government High. However, a moment of inattention was what separated our team from the eventual Zonal Champion. Considering that our team did not have any players who played the game competitively in primary school, what we did was an achievement in its own right.

Furthermore, the ‘B’ division boys also took part in the T-Net Volleyball Competition pitting against traditional powerhouses like Geylang Methodist School and Pasir Ris Secondary School. The boys took their chances well and emerged 2nd Runner Up after fighting off many tough challenges. This was definitely a well-deserved win for West Spring.
