What you had to say about “Omalume”“I’m not against “Omalume” taking thechildren to school. They are helpfulbecause not every parent can afford totake their children to school themselves. It is ideal for young childrenbecause some of the children arestill too young to be travelling bytaxi. What I don’t like is seeingyoung boys dropping out of schooland becoming drivers of these cars.”
Ncamisile Ngcamu:
“They must stop overloading theyoung ones in one car. Another thingthat is very important is making surethat their cars are in a good workingcondition. They should be registered, serviced and in good condition. Thedrivers must be in a possession of avalid drivers license.”
Khanyo Ngubo:
“My concern is theoverloading. I believethat the reason theyoverload is becausethey are transportingyoung children. Theyshouldn’t be bannedbut the governmentshould lay rules thatthey will have to followlike in any otherworking office. The carsthey use must be ingood condition at alltimes.”
Nathi Sibisi:“Omalume” save
time. A child wontbe late, unlike if theyuse a taxi. With“Omalume” they aresafe, they fetch themfrom home, leavethem at school inone car. It is a relieffor a parentbecause they knowat what time theyshould be expecting them fromschool.”

2015 - a communitytourism yearTHE year 2015 has been

“Local communities have a keyrole to play in tourism development,as they are the focal pointwhere many of the key cultural, heritage sites, historical andadventure venues that are ofsignificance to tourists arefound within communities,” saidMhlongo.
“Involvement of localcommunities can only help toenhance the local tourism productand grow domestic tourism,” hecontinued.

Not all women are worthpaying for
SIMPHIWE MKHIZE
IT is common for males to avoidpaying lobola for women, and theadvent of a lobola app, though
meant to be for entertainmentpurposes, touches on very pertinentissues.
Indeed, beauty or physicalappearance, cooking, wealth orearning an income, are some of thethings that most men take seriouslynowadays.
It is not surprising that somewomenshould find theappoffensive.
Forstarters, nowomanlikesbeingevaluated or critiqued, especially ifthey are lacking in some of thematters raised in the app.
Personally, I do not support thepaying of lobola and if someoneshould wish to marry any of mydaughters, they could have herwithoutpayinganylobolofees.Andofcourse I would not expect mydaughter to contribute even a singlepenny towards that wedding, if it is awhite wedding.
Yes,mydaughters arenot for sale.In other words, what I have done
to support them i.e. paying for theireducation, health, food, transporta-tion, shelter etc, cannot bemeasuredin monetary terms. But of coursethere is a catch: she is welcome tocome back home any time if the
husband isnot treatingher right, andthehusbandwouldbeexpectedtopayfor her children’s upkeep oreducation.
In that way, no one would feelcheated out of their money.
I am of the opinion that love is notabout making money for me as aparent, but a conscious decisionbetween two people that they wouldlike to spend their lives together.
Apparently, many guyswould liketo start families, but they havefinancial constraints. I find it unac-ceptable that some parents shouldstand in the way of a young couplewho wishes to start a family justbecausethepoorguyisnotfinanciallystrong topay themfor theirdaughter.
But thenaparentwouldargueandsay how is a guy who cannot affordpaying for lobolo planning to takecare of his or her daughter?
TheNgunipeoplerefer to loboloasa relation-building gesture ofgoodwill, and they are proud of theirdaughters who bring money to themin this way.
I must quickly state that I havenothing against anyone who acceptslobola fees or payment for theirdaughters. In fact, having beenmarried for ten years to my late wife(God rest her soul), I realise that wemaleshavenorighttocomplainaboutpaying lobola.
Women (of course not all of them)generally give more in a relationshipin termsof householdduties. Besidesbringing children to the worldthrough a laborious process, what ittakes to raise a child is painstakingand it is general knowledge that thewoman folk often bear the brunt for
it all.In fact I salute every mother -
married or not (including the manysingleparentsout there) - for thehardwork that constitutes beingamother, let alone single parenting.
Women are the ones who have tosee to it that children eat, if they haveclothes to wear, their cleanliness, ifthey have a roof over their heads, thelist is pretty long. Whatever iscontained in the Children’s Act - agood mother is familiar with it morethan the father is.
However, the number of fatherswho are referred to as the ‘newman’is rising because of advocacy andawarenessworkthathasempoweredmany men about children’s rights, including the right to a shelter, security and the right to be free fromemotional, mental, sexual andphysical abuse.
As a newly graduated singleparent who has enjoyed the input ofa useful partner for a decade, I ammore appreciative of the value of acompetent mother and wife.
Hence Ibelieve it isnotnecessarilywrong for those who like the idea ofreceiving money for their daughtersin the form of lobolo to be critical ofthenew loboloapp, if it discriminatesin accordance with the value (or lackthereof) that the makoti will bring ornot bring to her new family.
I really liked that witty lobolo appinvention. It is entertaining. Howev-er, women can rest assured that inreal life, somemendonotget toknowthe true value or quality of theirwomen before they marry them.

Has lobola lost its meaning?
PHOTOS: NOKULUNGA NGOBESE"Although this application is
meant to be playful, nowadays wehave lost the meaning of whatlobola is. There are deductions andadditions as if we are items in ashop. It should go back to the wayit was before, where the intentionwas to create relations betweentwo families."
Nokwazi Lugayeni:
"Paying for school fees, clothingand transport is the responsibilityof parents, however when it comesto lobola negotiations, theyconsider all those things. It's likethey expect to be repaid for whatwas their responsibility from thebeginning. After lobola negotiations, there is still a lot of exchanging ofgifts. Some even ask for laptops aspart of the negotiations. It's likeparents are selling us."
Nandi Gabisa:
"Nowadays, lobola is more aboutshowing off how much you can affordrather than culture. Sending your childto school is like taking an investmentpolicy as parents expect more when itcomes to lobola negotiations. There isa lot of money that is wasted andyou find that people are gettingmarried for all the wrong reasons.”
Andile Mkhize:
"The main purpose was toestablish relations between twofamilies. Although there hasalways been an exchange of giftsin the process, they were not asexpensive as they are now. Peopleeven ask for electric appliancesnowadays which is not ok."
Sfiso Xavier:
WITH software developer Robert Matsaneng having developed a lobola calculator app to beinstalled on smartphones, NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to city residents to find out if lobolastill serves its purpose or if it has become a money making scheme. Matsaneng said that
the app is intended to be playful, as it gives an estimate of how much dowry one is worth. It considersage, height, weight, waist size, and how attractive a person is, qualifications, type of job, whethershe has been married before and if she has children.
"Some pay lobola and end up notgetting married because of theexpense. After negotiations, there arethings such as umembeso andumabo which cost a lot. I think theway lobola has been made to beexpensive is also contributing to thedivorce rate, as you find youngmarried couples divorcing becausethere are so overindebted."

The Island is nowplaying in PMBTHEHexagonTheatrewill, from
17 to 21 February at 6pm, beshowing The Island, a play
starring Mpilo Nzimande and TQZondi and directed by PeterMitchell.
The play is written by AtholFugard, John Kani and WinstonNtshona.
“But just remember this, brother, nobody laughsforever! There’ll comeatimewhenthey’llstoplaughing, andthat will be the time when ourAntigone hits them with her words.”is one of the salient highlights of theIsland.
John and Winston are twoprisoners on Robben Island, boundby ideology, proximity, shackles anda deep affection.
As they rehearse for a perform-ance of Sophocles’ Antigone atthe prison concert, John learns thathis release is imminent; Winston is alifer.
This classic South African playbalances hope and despair as itidentifies with Antigone’s struggle ofright and wrong, the law of Stateversus the law of the heart.
Itexposesthedepthsofcrueltyandinhumanity while affirming the
dignity and courage of the humanspirit.
The Island is remembered as oneof the fewplays thathelped to changethe world.
Its tour of America was crucial inbringing the Americans to impose
sanctions on South Africa - a movewhich helped topple apartheid.
Tickets are R70 (R50 for studentsand seniors).
Bookings at Computicket (schoolblock bookings through the theatre).- Supplied.
