Baptism and Easter
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Supper, Cross, Resurrection. Alleluia. If you came here to this church during the last couple of days (or even the last couple of weeks) you notice a major change in the way the church looks. The altar frontal is white symbolizing the light of Christ’s resurrection. The Paschal Candle is placed next to the ambo, a sign that Christ’s light scatters the darkness. There are flowers galore symboliz-ing the new life that comes from Christ’s death and resurrection. On Holy Saturday morning, many women and men were here cleaning thoroughly the church facilities. And why? Not just because we were getting ready to host lots of people, but because the church building represents Christ — ever ancient and ever new. Our church building will be 72 years old in July, and I will have been pastor here for four years.
Ever since I arrived in Athens in June 2015, I have recognized the beauty of this old church. And so I have spent some resources in making the church more beautiful — everything from exten-sive remodeling to beautiful landscaping outside. And why? Because we as Catholics are a sacra-mental people. The externals do matter — they are not everything — but often times they indicate an interior change. The beautiful church indicates the beautiful community of believers that attend holy Mass in this place week in and week out, day in and day out.
The Catechism defines a sacrament as, “An outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace.” Jesus left us the sacraments as a way to encounter Him at all stages of life: at our birth, our matura-tion, our food, our relationships, our death. They also heal us when we are spiritually sick. This Easter I plan to preach on each of the seven sacraments. Today I would like to speak about Bap-tism because it is the first sacrament we must receive before we can receive the other sacraments. It makes us an adopted son or daughter of God the Father; it joins us to Christ’s Body the Church; it cleanses the soul of Original Sin (and actual sin) it infuses the grace of the Holy Spirit in our souls so that we can live the theological virtues of faith, hope and love.
Baptism is very much linked to Easter. When we are baptized by a priest or deacon, it is ac-tually Christ who is doing the baptizing. He is sharing with the believer His own death as the water is poured over the person, and as the water rolls off the person, it symbolizes the resurrection from the tomb. During the Sundays of Easter, I will sprinkle each Sunday as a reminder of our baptism and that we repent. In Easter Sunday Mass we will have the opportunity to renew our baptismal promis-es. Most of us had our parents make those promises for us, but for others, we will remember. This helps us recall that Jesus wants a personal relationship with us, every day, not just Easter Sunday, and that relationship begins with Christian baptism.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:
Cena, Cruz, Resurrección. Aleluya. Si vino a esta iglesia durante los últimos días (o incluso las últimas semanas), noto un cambio importante en la apariencia de la iglesia. El altar esta de blan-co que simboliza la luz de la resurrección de Cristo. La vela de Pascua se coloca al lado del ambón, una señal de que la luz de Cristo dispersa la oscuridad. Hay flores en abundancia que simbolizan la vida nueva que viene de la muerte y resurrección de Cristo. El sábado santo por la mañana, mu-chas mujeres y hombres estuvieron aquí limpiando a fondo las instalaciones de la iglesia. ¿Y por qué? No solo porque nos estábamos preparando para recibir a mucha gente, sino porque el edificio de la iglesia representa a Cristo, siempre antiguo y siempre nuevo. El edificio de nuestra iglesia ten-drá 72 años de edad en julio y habré sido pastor aquí durante cuatro años.
Desde que llegué a Athens en junio de 2015, he reconocido la belleza de esta iglesia anti-gua. Y sí, he gastado algunos recursos para hacer que la iglesia sea más hermosa, desde extensas remodelaciones hasta hermosos paisajes en el exterior. ¿Y por qué? Porque nosotros como Católi-cos somos un pueblo sacramental. Lo externo importa, no lo es todo, pero a menudo indican un cambio interior. La hermosa iglesia indica la hermosa comunidad de creyentes que asisten a la San-ta Misa en este lugar semana a semana, día tras día.
El Catecismo define un sacramento como, "Un signo externo instituido por Cristo para dar gracia". Jesús nos dejó los sacramentos como una forma de encontrarlo en todas las etapas de la vida: en nuestro nacimiento, nuestra maduración, nuestra comida, nuestras relaciones, en nuestra muerte. También nos sanan cuando estamos espiritualmente enfermos. Esta Pascua planeo predi-car cada uno de los siete sacramentos. Hoy me gustaría hablar sobre el bautismo porque es el pri-mer sacramento que debemos recibir antes de que podamos recibir los otros sacramentos. Nos convierte en un hijo o hija adoptivos de Dios Padre; nos une al Cuerpo de Cristo la Iglesia; limpia el alma del pecado original (y el pecado real) infunde la gracia del Espíritu Santo en nuestras almas para que podamos vivir las virtudes teológicas de la fe, la esperanza y el amor.
El bautismo está muy vinculado a la Pascua. Cuando somos bautizados por un sacer-dote o diácono, en realidad es Cristo quien hace el bautismo. Él está compartiendo con el creyente su propia muerte cuando el agua se vierte sobre la persona, y cuando el agua sale de la persona, simboliza la resurrección de la tumba. Durante los domingos de Pascua, cada domingo les rociaré como un recordatorio de nuestro bautismo y de que nos arrepintamos. En la misa del Domingo de Pascua tendremos la oportunidad de renovar nuestras problemas bautismales. La mayoría de nues-tros padres tuvieron que hacer esas promesas por nosotros. Esto nos ayuda a recordar que Jesus quiere una relación personal con nosotros, todos los dias, no solo el Domingo de Pascua, y esa re-lación comienza con el bautismo Cristiano.
