Dear Fellow Music Lovers,

The period leading up to Easter is a time of silence. But that does not mean music needs to keep silent during these 40 days of Lent – and certainly not in Lucerne. Our 2017 Easter Festival finds a way to engage in spiritual contemplation through numerous concerts that will be per-formed in the Hofkirche, the Fran-ziskanerkirche, and the Jesuitenkirche – and of course in the KKL Concert Hall as well. Naturally an Easter clas-sic such as Bach’s St. John Passion is on the program: this year it will be per-formed by Thomas Hengelbrock and his Balthasar Neumann Choir and En-semble. Wolfgang Rihm’s Requiem-Strophen represents a brand-new work of sacred music, while Monteverdi’s Vespers, which will be staged, rings in this milestone year marking the 450th anniversary of the composer’s birth. We also commemorate the Swiss “patron saint” Niklaus von Flüe, also known as “Brother Klaus” – born 600 years ago – with the dramatic legend composed about him by Arthur Honegger. Mo-tets by Bach, Messiaen, and Poulenc will inspire meditative immersion, and a vocal high point is sure to be the opening concert with the phenomenal Russian soprano Julia Lezhneva, who will sing music by Porpora, Handel, and Vivaldi.

Teodor Currentzis, who made his spectacular Festival debut in 2015, returns with his ensemble musicAeterna to lead two concerts as artist-in-residence. He will pair Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater with Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Our Savior on the Cross and will also demonstrate the explosively revolutionary power of the classical masters Mozart and Beethoven. Mariss Jansons and the Bavarian Radio ensembles have been regular guests at the Easter Festival since 2004, and they have designed a brilliant finale with two programs, one contemporary and one of modern classics.

Not every music lover believes in God – but who doesn’t believe in Johann Sebastian Bach, the “fifth evangelist,” as Albert Schweitzer called him? Through his art Bach achieves the miracle of persuading those of the most varied beliefs and nations, both the pious and free-thinkers, of the existence of a higher truth, of an eternity that is intangible in theory and cannot be proved em-pirically. With their Easter program Ulrike Grosch and the Collegium Vocale zu Franziskanern Luzern will furnish us with unsuspected meta-physical experiences, for Olivier Mes- siaen’s Cinq rechants, the key part of his Tristan trilogy, also deals with infinity, with love and death – without being based on any religious text. Meanwhile, Francis Poulenc, who was a Parisian bon vi-vant during his early years, returned to Catholicism in 1938-39 with his Quatre motets pour un temps de pénitence. Ulrike Grosch will interlace these four pieces with in-strumental movements by Bach – thus placing Poulenc within a centuries-old tradition.

This is a soprano you really need to hear! Julia Lezhne-va, who was born in 1989 in the easternmost corner of Russia, right on the Japanese border, has been sending lovers of the voice into raptures. She sings flawless col-oratura with razor-sharp clarity and trills with a delicacy that tickles the ears. She can spin infinitely long threads

of melody without gasping for breath, and her vocal acrobatics constantly astonish, with phrasing that is as mov- ing as it is intelligent. Together with the Moscow ensemble La Voce Stru- mentale and the multitalented Dmi- try Sinkovsky, who has been equally successful as a violinist, conductor, and countertenor, Julia Lezhneva now makes her LUCERNE FESTIVAL debut. She will deploy her angelic voice to perform works of sacred

music by Porpora and Handel, while Sinkovsky and his forces will expand the program into a panorama of Ba-roque music through concertos by Telemann, Vivaldi, and Corelli.

This program offers an ideal way to get in the mood for the major Monteverdi focus to come in the 2017 Sum-mer Festival. Before Sir John Eliot Gardiner performs all

three extant operas by the “founder of modern music,” the Luzerner The- ater – in keeping with the Easter season – will present Monteverdi’s mighty Vespers. Lasting more than 90 min-utes, this milestone in the history of sacred music is comparable in signif-icance to Bach’s B minor Mass and Beethoven’s Missa solemnis. Together with the well-known fashion designer Kostas Murkudis, the choreographer Sebastian Matthias will transform the

church into a walkable stage space and integrate the audience into the proceedings – a fascinating interac-tion between architecture, sound, and movement. It’s at the same time a wonderful opportunity to pay a visit to Lucerne’s Jesuitenkirche, which has been closed over the past year for restoration work and will now shine in renewed splendor.

Marking the 600th anniversary of Niklaus von FlüeArthur Honegger Nicolas de Flue. Dramatic legend for speaker, children’s choruses, chorus, brass ensemble, and percussion after a text by Denis de Rougemont

The Second World War was already casting its shadow when Arthur Honegger and Denis de Rougemont re-ceived a commission to write a new choral work for the Swiss National Exhibition in 1939 (the “Landi”) in fact the world premiere had to be postponed on account of the outbreak of war. As the protagonist of their “dra-matic legend,” they chose the mystic Niklaus von Flüe, the “patron saint” of Switzerland. They describe his departure from the army, from his judicial office, and from his family; his retreat on the Ranft chine; and his plea for internal peace among the Confederation at the Diet of Stans in 1481 – an unmis-takable commentary on the political events of their own time. The year 2017 marks the 600th anniversary of the birth of “Brother Klaus.” Could there be a better occasion to perform Honegger’s patriotic portrait of a saint? It fuses oratorio and opera, unfolding an enthrall-ing dramaturgy and anthemic exaltation with immedi-ate effect.

Until 1991, Perm located near the Urals over 1,000 kilo-meters northeast of Moscow, was a “forbidden city” that foreigners were not permitted to visit but only allowed

to pass through via the Trans-Siberi-an Railway. Yet it is precisely in this remote spot that a musical revolu-tion has occurred: in 2011 the Greek conductor Teodor Currentzis settled there with his ensemble musicAeter-na and began interpreting the sup-posedly familiar repertoire with such fundamentally freshness, in a literally radical way, that the world has not gotten over its astonishment. Cur-

rentzis will lead two concerts at the Easter Festival – and to launch these he has another indomitable per-sonality at his side: the Moldova-born violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, who now lives in Switzerland. “The beautiful woman who is not too much given to beautiful notes, and the mystic. The child of immigrants and the fortune seeker. The anarchist and the revolutionary. What a perfect couple!” as Die Zeit recently remarked. Mozart and Beethoven would have enjoyed these artists.

Johann Sebastian Bach St. John Passion BWV 245Second version from 1725

You likely have not encountered this version of Bach’s St. John Passion – but there is no question that it is au-thentic Bach, from the first to the last note. Thomas Hengelbrock performs this oldest extant Passion set-ting by the Leipzig Thomas cantor, but instead of the version that is normally used, which is based on the original score of 1724, he turns to the second version produced in 1725. The latter does not begin with the well-known chorus “Herr, unser Herrscher,” nor does it end with the chorale “Ach Herr, lass dein lieb Engelein,” but instead re-places these pieces with other choral arrangements. What’s more, there are three additional arias. Why both-er? Bach clearly did not want to offer his congregation the same work two years in a row and so decided to cre-ate an alternative version: a fascinat-ing glimpse into the workshop of the composer. Which version is to be preferred? Judge for yourself ! In any case, Hengelbrock, his wonderful en-sembles, and the first-rate soloists will ensure a Bach experience second to none.

Some conductors use a baton, others do not – why is that the case? And what kinds of gestures are neces- sary to cue all of the musicians to come in precisely on

time? Bernard Haitink’s master class at Easter provides answers to some very basic questions indeed. This is the seventh time that the Dutch mae-stro will have given young orchestra leaders a chance to benefit from his vast knowledge and his great expe-rience as he joins them to explore central works of the orchestral rep-ertoire. The auditors also learn much from these live lessons on stage:

about the scores that are being discussed as well as about a conductor’s tricks of the trade. And certainly there will be a wide variety of conductor types to ob-serve, from the wizards who elicit sound and the thrill-ing communicators to the careful disciplinarians.

Giovanni Battista Pergolesi has gone down in music history as the “angelico maestro,” the “angelic master.” The fact that he died all-too-early, in 1736, at the age of just 26, only provoked further comparisons with Mozart and established his legend. Pergolesi’s last completed work, the poignant Stabat Mater, in particular points to the promise that was cut short. This is music that has no desire to overwhelm with crafts-manship but prefers to move the listener with a heartwarming simplic-ity – an ideal that foreshadows later generations. Teodor Currentzis will pair this early stroke of genius with a piece of Passion music by the mature Joseph Haydn, the Seven Last Words of Our Savior on the Cross, which will be performed in the original orchestral version from 1787. Haydn mirrors each of Christ’s last words of with a pro-found musical meditation, ultimately allowing God’s wrath to erupt at the end with the “terremoto,” the earthquake: just the ticket for the ecstatic conductor Currentzis.

Nowadays we like to talk about the “global village” because we eat the exact same hamburgers whether we’re in Berlin or Beijing, London or Lagos, Moscow or Milwaukee; listen to the same music; and watch the same films. But 100 years ago, everything was so differ-ent! The trombonist and composer Mike Svoboda shows us how poly-phonic the world sounded back then. He follows the (fictitious) explorer Professor Hoggins around the globe, taking us back to times that were thought to have vanished through historical photos and the sounds of old shellac records that will be virtu-osically “translated” into our present day by the young musicians of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ALUMNI – while at the same time preserving their fascinating otherness. “I go slowly from the world / into a landscape beyond all distance,” writes Hans Sahl in his poem Strophen, which revolves around the final stages of the journey through life, before death awaits us. Wolfgang Rihm has set these verses to music in his new, evening-length choral work Requiem-Strophen, along with a text by Johannes

Bobrowski, sonnets by Michelange-lo, and a Psalm from the Bible. It may remind you of Ein deutsches Requiem by Johannes Brahms, which similar-ly does not follow the liturgy of the Mass for the Dead but instead offers a highly personal set of texts culled by the composer. And like Brahms, Rihm, too, keeps deliberate distance from the certainty of faith: “God has given us the gift of doubt. Through

What a way to declare your love! In 2015 Mariss Jansons, a highly sought-after maestro, stepped down from his position leading the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam and even turned down the Berlin Philhar-

monic – to be able to devote himself entirely to the Bavarian Radio Sym-phony Orchestra. Jansons refers to their partnership as a “gift” and says: “Their musical professionalism and human quality are second to none.” Lucerne’s audiences know quite well that the performances by the Latvian conductor and his Munich ensem-bles – Jansons also helms the Bavar-ian Radio Choir – ensure musically

thrilling experiences: since 2004 they have served as the resident ensemble that regularly performs the crown-ing final concerts of the Easter Festival. For this year’s concluding concert, Jansons will take on symphonies by Prokofiev and Sibelius, masterpieces from the early 20th century. He will also join with the American poet of the piano Emanuel Ax in Mozart’s celestial Concerto in E-flat major, K. 482: a finale made to order.

Discounted Tickets for Students and KulturLegi HoldersUniversity students, high school students, vocational students, and JTC members up to the age of 30 as well as KulturLegi holders may purchase tickets for CHF 20 starting one hour before the beginning of the performance for events which are not sold out. They must present valid identification. No additional price reductions are possible. Valid identification must also be shown at the entrances to the respective venues. Bring Your Youngster to a Concert for FreeWhat could be lovelier than introducing young listeners to the enchanting world of classical music? When you a buy a ticket to selected Festival events, you can also receive one free ticket for the same value for your little one. Information and list of eligible concerts available at www.lucernefestival.ch.

Duplicates in Case of Ticket LossWhen possible, we will provide duplicates for lost concert tickets. Such duplicates are handed out exclusively at the evening box office for a fee of CHF 10 per order. It is not possible to print duplicates of tickets purchased at the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ticket window or at our sales outlets without customer data.

Returning Tickets for ResaleFor events that are sold out, tickets can be resold on commission. The commission fee is 30% of the purchase price. The costs of the transfer transaction are payable by the recipient. The organizer accepts no liability for the resale of returned tickets. Print@Home-Tickets as well as tickets for which no cus-tomer data were stored at the LUCERNE FESTIVAL box office or that were bought at ticket outlets may not be resold.

Wheelchair Spaces The main concert hall of the KKL Luzern has six wheelchair spaces available on special terms. The Festival cannot ensure that accompanying persons will receive a seat in the same price range or in the general vicinity. Wheelchair spaces are also available at the other event locations. Should you require help at any event venue, please do not hesitate to contact us. Our local staff are always available to help with questions and problems.

Entrance to the Concert HallThe house opens 30 minutes before the beginning of the concert. For events in the KKL’s Lucerne Hall or at one of the venues outside the KKL, if applicable, access will start shortly before the beginning of the event. For the sake of the musicians and the audience, latecomers will not be admitted until intermission or at the discretion of the Concert Hall staff. In certain instances concerts will have no intermission and allow no latecomers. If the concert is missed on account of tardy arrival, tickets will not be refunded.

Audio and Video RecordingFor all LUCERNE FESTIVAL events, customers are strictly prohibited from making visual or audio record-ings, including even for private use. Devices used to record, to film, to photograph, and to video record are not permitted. Failure to comply will result in expulsion from the event venue. LUCERNE FESTIVAL makes audio and/or video recordings of certain performances. With the purchase of a concert ticket, the customer understands that LUCERNE FESTIVAL also uses recordings in which it is possible that he or she may appear.

Free rides within the Passepartout SystemIn Lucerne your concert ticket may also be used on the day of the performance for a free ride to and from the venue within the Passepartout-Zone 10 (2nd class). Valid from 3 hours before the start and up to 3 hours after the end of the performance.

Arrival and Departure by Train: 50% Rebate in the Swiss Rail NetworkAs a concertgoer you can receive a discount of 50% for 1st or 2nd class at any Swiss Rail ticket window for a round trip to Lucerne. (The concert ticket must be presented to the inspector on the train.) With the half-fare card, the trip will cost only 25% of the full fare. This special ticket must be purchased at a Swiss Rail ticket counter, by calling the Rail Service line at 0900 300 300 (CHF 1.19/minute in the Swiss telephone network), or online at the SBB ticket shop (www.sbb.ch/lucernefestival) before beginning your trip.

Arrival via CarOwing to the parking and traffic situation, we recommend using public transportation during the Festival season. Guests who travel by car are advised to observe the city’s parking guidance system and to take the bus from the parking garages to the KKL Luzern.

Park & RideSeveral train stations outside the City of Lucerne offer Park & Ride for rail travel to Lucerne. The following stations are especially convenient and provide ample parking: Sursee, Rotkreuz, Zug, Wolhusen, Arth-Goldau, and Sarnen.

Where Sacred and Secular Music MeetEvery year in spring, the Easter Festival splendidly rings in the Festival year that takes place in the KKL Luzern: nine days are given over to sacred and secular music performed by orchestras and choruses and by conductors and soloists from all over the world. Along with the evening concerts, there are additional related events for adults and children alike, including the “master class in conducting” with Bernard Haitink and a family concert with the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ALUMNI.

With its unique acoustics and its design by the French architect Jean Nouvel, the Concert Hall provides a perfect stage for the Easter Festival’s symphony and choral concerts and their blend of the old and new, of sacred and secular music.
