YOUR TRUSTWORTHY ATTORNEY Practicing In:

Family Law • Bankruptcy • Criminal/DUI Defense

Amber Guymon provided us with knowledgeable, professional and personal legal advice and guidance through a very difficult time. It was very nice to have all of our options provided in an easy to follow yet detailed presentation. It was, and continues to be, comforting to know that my family and I have someone available to help with any legal matters should the need arise again.

Summer is just a couple of months away, and next month In the Zona starts featuring their Summer Camp Adventures, so now is the perfect time to

start thinking about summer activities! As educators, we are frequently asked what we

think students should do each summer. Should I pay for camp or put my child in summer school? Will their brains waste away?

Here are a few teacher-approved suggestions to make their (and your) summer less stressful (and filled with learning)! These pointers work for big kids too.

TAke Field TripSPull out the calendar and once a week plan a trip to a museum, zoo or historical site. Look up your destination’s website first because these places often have maps, coloring pages or worksheets that your child can do while there. (If you aren’t sure where to go grab an Arizona map and identify places close to home that you can visit.) When you take your weekly field trip have your kids spot wildlife or local landmarks.

CreATe A BookwormIt may not sound like fun at first, but with the right books your child will begin to enjoy escaping into a good book. Make it part of your routine to read one hour every day. Set a reading time during the day that is quiet and won’t likely be interrupted by any other event.

Have your student read parts to you aloud that they find interesting or exciting. At the end of the hour ask them to spend five minutes telling you all about their story. (These techniques help students with reading comprehension.) Sneaky, huh?! A fun game is to let your child test you. Have them ask you questions about their story.

deAr mommy … Every night just before going to bed, ask your child to write a letter or note to you about their day. (Younger children can draw pictures and tell you about them). It is very meaningful to your child if you write back to them. (When they read your letter you’re sneaking in some extra reading time.) Brilliant! As they progress,

encourage them to use descriptive words and great sentence structure. In your response you can offer ways to make their story sound more exciting. This is a great activity that allows parents and kids to communicate non-verbally. (You can even make a little book of all the letters at the end of summer break.) Sweet!

pAy iT ForwArdA student’s self-confidence increases when they learn to work productively with others in a positive way. Volunteer at a food bank, library, school, summer program, or church. Learning to volunteer and work with others transfers to the classroom. Teachers require students to learn to work together productively on many projects, and students who have volunteered and know when and how to make a difference do much better. Making a difference in the lives of others also increases students’ sense of empathy and self-worth. If all else fails, have them volunteer to babysit a neighbor’s child or pets, or even to mow someone’s lawn.

mom’S liTTle ASSiSTAnTTake the bore out of chore by allowing your child to create an in-home restaurant, complete with a personalized menu … more writing practice. Voilà! Cook dinner together one night a week. Cooking classes are rarely offered at school and it’s a skill every child needs. Hot dogs are an easy meal that anyone can make. Homemade pizza is another great option. Help your student understand the importance of including fruits and vegetables in every meal. Also, have your kids do their own laundry this summer. (They will thank you once they get to college.)

A summer full of television and video games with nothing else is a wasted brain. Enjoy your children this summer and give them knowledge and experiences they won’t get anywhere else.

In ASU MLK Poster CompetitionDesign demonstrates civic character

Cailyn Barnett, a seventh-grade student at Liberty Arts Academy, won second place in Arizona State University’s 28th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration poster art contest. ASU received more than 1,000 entries. Cailyn received a $75 prize and

an invitation to the 28th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast on Jan. 23, 2013 at the ASU Polytechnic Campus to honor individuals with MLK service awards.

Twelve-year-old Cailyn received notice of her award in the mail last month. Her mother opened the letter from ASU President Michael Crow and read it out loud. “I was so excited that I screamed!” said Cailyn. The young artist knows the power of words and imagery. “I think by making this it can help make the world a better place,” said Cailyn.

Cailyn’s award-winning poster has a message of unity and civic responsibility. This message is a direct reflection of the strength in character that is promoted here at Liberty Arts Academy. The Liberty Arts family congratulates Cailyn’s accomplishment and commends her for demonstrating the strong character and civic belief of our community.

“We are very proud of Cailyn,” said Cheri Wasiel, Liberty Arts Academy school leader. “She expressed through art the ideals we teach here at Liberty Arts Academy. It’s a very exciting accomplishment for her.”

It was such an unusual sight. I walked into the Gilbert Public Library on Guadalupe and Greenfield and found a dog in the corner of

the kids section. Other people were looking at me like “What’s going on here?!?!” What I knew, and they didn’t, is that this was normal for a Saturday morning. Let me explain.

Zona was invited to spend a recent Satur-day morning with the folks at Paws 2 Read—an organization dedicated to helping kids read using dogs. Yep. Dogs. I have a dog. A hyper, two year old Maltese Bichon named Figaro. I cant say hello to him without him getting so excited he might pee a little. Figaro is definitely not the kind of dog you bring to the library. The dogs at Paws 2 Read are different though.

These are specially trained therapy dogs. They are incredibly well behaved. They don’t bark when they aren’t supposed to and they are very calm even when strangers like me walk up and start petting them. Therapy dogs can be helpful when someone has had a bad experience. Dogs aren’t very good at yelling at people and therapy dogs especially like it when they get to spend time with kids. Oh yeah. The kids. Paws to Read isn’t just about the dogs. It’s about the kids too.

I got to meet a bunch of kids while I was there. There was Holly, a student at Self Development Charter School who went to Paws 2 Read just one time before I met her. She liked it so much, she started read-ing to her dad and her dogs and cats and rabbits at home. She says her bunnies Buttercup and Beau like it the most while her dad tends to fall asleep when she reads to him.

Holly read to Payson, an 11 year old black lab/golden retriever mix. One of the books was called Biscuit Takes a Walk. Holly thought it was funny that she was reading a book about a dog to a dog!

I also talked to Ethan and Trystan who started going to a program like Paws 2 Read when they lived in Colorado. Ethan, 7, and Trystan, 10, are in second and fourth grade at Johnson Elementary Montessori. Ethan started at Paws 2 Read by himself but it wasn’t long before he talked his brother into coming. The boys read together and their dog tried to hide under a chair. “I had to use treats to get her back out,” said Ethan.

The boys’ mom, Erin, loves the program because its great for kids who are great at reading or for kids who need a little help. I like how the program is so casual. Mom and dad can join in or stay out. The boys can go together or the kids can read alone. It’s a very flexible program

designed so the kids and the dogs enjoy each others company.

Zona is going to be doing some more work with Paws 2 Read. We have all kinds of interesting stories to tell not only about the dogs and the kids but also about the teen volunteers and adults who make the program work. Stay tuned for more cool stories about this cool program and, if you’d like more information, check out our website: www.paws2read.org.

Zona sent you to the Advanced Teen Driving course for a day. How would you describe your experience? My experience at Bondurant was amazing. It was really cool getting to drive a Chevy Camaro and the Cadillac CTE plus learning all the other tips about how to better handle a vehicle in high stress situations.

What was your favorite part of this course? My favorite part was probably the drifting exercise because we got to drift around and around for like 30+ minutes. What’s not fun about drifting?

Why was that your favorite? Cause it was live.

Would you recommend this course to your friends and other teens? I would highly recommend this course to other teens and my friends because you’re provided a ton of information in such a short amount of time and it’s never boring because you’re not driving some hunk of junk like you would in a typical drivers education course but a cool car that’s fast and looks really good. It’s just such an awesome experience.

What are 3 important things you learned that you will practice from now on as you are driving? 1. It’s better to avoid an accident then to step on the brakes right away. Try to swerve rather than stop. 2. Weight transfer is very important when driving. More weight on the front tires makes for an easier and more crisp turn. 3. Counter steer when the back end of your car is falling out and use a little gas to get it going straight again. Don’t over turn and spin out, but rather be patient and feel what the car is doing, then make a correction.

Tell us one thing everyone should know that you learned. You can still turn the car once the ABS is activated. Even if you slam on the brakes to avoid an accident, steer the car in the opposite direction in order to avoid becoming apart of the scene too.

John Interviews Bondurant’s Marketing Coordinator, Lindsey...How many visitors do you guys see pass through the school each year? About 10,000 students attend the Bob Bondurant School every year.

Can you name some of the films your instructors were stunt drivers in/for? Bob was a stunt driver in ‘Grand Prix’ in 1966 and also instructed James Garner throughout the film. Bob also instructed Paul Newman in 1968 film ‘Winning.’ Some of our instructors were precision drivers in ‘The Kingdom’.

How important is it to learn safe, responsible driving techniques for teens? Crucial! It will literally save your life. We receive many calls from students informing us that techniques they’ve learned in their class aided them in avoiding an accident.

Are there any driving techniques or maneuvers that the school has developed and invented for safer driving that’s used throughout the world? The Bondurant Method (in a nut-shell): ConCentration - ultimate car control demands 100 percent concentration! Vision - Always look ahead and practice proper target fixation and depth perception. VehiCle DynamiCs - understanding weight transfer, understeer and oversteer, and ways to correct issues. line teChnique - Turn-in point, Apex and exit. aChieVing 100 PerCent Car Control - the understanding and action of all techniques combined!

Zona sent your son John to the Advanced Teen Driving Course for a day. How did your son describe his experience? John described the experience as fun and informative. He learned skills that will help him to be a better driver.

How does this make you feel as a parent regarding his safety? As a parent, I feel much more comfortable letting him drive a car on his own, particularly on the freeway and in heavy traffic.

What important techniques do you feel he learned that better his driving skills? John told me that, according to Bondurant, braking is “overrated.” Specifically, it is better sometimes to swerve to avoid an accident, than slamming on brakes.

And his father, John Parker II, shares what he thought of the experience...

Bethany Christian School (BCS) in Tempe will be hosting an Open House on Thursday, February 7, 2013 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. BCS is an accredited, private K-8 Christian school delivering academic excellence from a biblical world view in a caring, Christ-centered environment. Open enrollment for new students entering the 2013-2014 school year

begins on the same evening as the Open House, February 7, 2013. Classrooms will be open for tours, teachers will be available to discuss curriculum and answer any questions, and

several students will give special performances. Bethany Christian School is built on a foundation of meeting the needs of the whole child. The program is carefully

designed to develop each student’s full potential in an environment where cooperation, hard work and respect for individual differences are valued. Students thrive in small classes taught by an experienced, passionate and caring teacher. The academic program integrates a deep, sequential course of study, with integration of art, music, and physical education. State of the art technology supports the academic program at every grade level. The result is a coherent school experience that advances the school’s mission to lead each student toward a relationship with Jesus Christ and encourage each one to reach his or her unique potential in Christ – academically, spiritually, socially, physically, and creatively.

OPEN HOUSE AT BETHANY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

Primrose School of East Mesa is committed to instilling community pride, the spirit of volunteerism and the concept of giving in the children enrolled at the Center. Ranging in age

from infants to Kindergarteners, the children are taught dignity and respect in cooperation with their parents.

Primrose Kindergarten students collected food and performed chores at home to earn money to purchase additional food at the neighboring Fresh and Easy Neighborhood Market. The children were excited to be able to select healthy choices to share with others who are less fortunate than themselves. According to one 5 year old, Joshua Sekenski, “It makes me happy to help other kids!” Then he went on to say, “Can we do this every day?”

Hopefully these children will continue giving back to their community in whatever way they can.

what was it like to see your artwork on display? It was strange. I was caught between being proud of my artwork and questioning whether it deserved to be in a gallery. I wondered whether people actually thought of my artwork as a piece of art or simply an attempt by an amateur high school student.

was this your first time that your artwork was in an exhibit? Besides on the fridge at home? Yes.

what would you say that you favorite medium is? I love using pastel because it allows me to easily and quickly bring out much more color in a composition than I could by pressing on colored pencils or tediously mixing paint.

How long have you been drawing/painting? I had always loved to draw as a child, since I was able to hold a crayon. My father mainly encouraged my interest in art, and he was always helping me in my drawing abilities.

when did you realize that you were good at drawing/painting? I found enjoyment and inspiration for drawing once I had discovered a wide range of color and depth in our world that most people have a hard time noticing.

who is your favorite artist? I love Monet’s works. His experiments with light and color fascinate me.

what would you like to be when you grow up? I would like to either continue to study violin and become a professional musician or be some sort of writer.

do you have college plans yet? where are you going? I plan to go to college out of state and double major in music and political science. I have not narrowed my list to any “top choice” schools; however I have been accepted to Hope College, Gonzaga University, Randolph College, and University of Redlands. I have yet to hear back from the rest of the colleges I’ve applied to.

I’m excited to share the art experience I’ve had during the last two years at Mesa Prep. I would definitely say that my favorite medium is chalk pastel. Before working with this medium in art class I had never

really branched out to anything other than graphite pencil and ink. However, during the chalk pastel unit I had a great time working with different blending techniques and figuring out how to better enhance the finer details of my artwork. The struggle I ran into was how to work with a block of chalk and create the details I desired, such as blades of grass. Once I had figured out how to achieve the fine details it really did dramatically enhance the artwork, it was so satisfying. After completing my pastel piece, “Shelter Cove,” I instantly knew that was the artwork I wanted to have displayed in the art show. I was incredibly nervous to display my art though, it was my first art show, I didn’t know what to price my artwork and I even was reluctant to actually sell my art because of the attachment I had. It wasn’t until I had talked with Mr. Gillingham and he mentioned that his experience while selling art, he said, “There is no greater compliment than having a complete stranger but your artwork.” And it made sense to me then, I was selling one of my most sentimental pieces to a stranger who saw the beauty and the work I put in. And it truly is the greatest and most rewarding compliment.
