educators’ Corner

Selecting a college is one of the biggest and most important decisions that university-bound high school students

will make as young adults. The amount and variety of choices can be overwhelming, but it’s vital that students carefully weigh the options in order to find the college that best meets their own academic, professional and personal needs.

When narrowing down options, consider these three key components:

ACAdEMiCS – Perhaps the most important factor for students to consider is the aca-demic strength of each college on their list. Students will want to choose a college that is accredited (regional accreditation is the highest level) and one that offers challenging curriculum. In addition, students will receive more individualized attention at colleges that offer small class sizes taught by full-time pro-fessors. Students should search for colleges that offer their program of interest in order to best prepare them to launch their career after graduation.

AffOrdABility – Students should strive to find a college that will provide them with

the highest quality education possible at the most affordable rate and in the most efficient amount of time to ensure a fair return on their monetary investment. Look for colleges with extensive scholarship programs to bring costs down, as well as on-campus job oppor-tunities to help limit the amount of financial aid that is needed.

COMMUnity – Colleges come in all shapes and sizes, and students should consider what sort of atmosphere best suits their individual needs. Some students prefer a smaller, more personal atmosphere, while others enjoy larger, vibrant university communities. Stu-dents who enjoy serving their greater com-munity should look at colleges that cultivate community outreach opportunities. In addi-tion, students who enjoy playing or attending athletic, theatrical or musical events should also consider colleges that provide these activities.

The best way for a student to gather infor-mation about a college they are considering is to take a guided tour of campus, meet with an admissions representative to ask ques-tions and attend activities on campus to experience a bit of the campus life.

Arizona Magic of Music & Dance was developed by Ruth Covey, the founder of ZETA21 International Leadership Foundation. Her goal was to create an authentic theatrical experience for children and young adults with physi-cal or cognitive impairments. Since 2007, participants (actors) have had the opportunity to attend a weeklong summer day camp. Camp activities are geared towards building self-esteem through the pride and joy of perfor-mance. Each actor receives a role in the performance. In addition, teen volunteers from the community work as “Buddies”. This affords them an opportunity to develop their leadership skills, while serving /supporting others.

The 2013 camp will be held June 10-14th from 9:00am to 3:00pm at Christ’s Church - Fountain Hills. The performance of “SWINGIN’ SAFARI” will be held on June 14th.

K–8 CHARTER SCHOOL with a Private Preschool

MPA StudentS PrePAre for their Senior theSiS

In its effort to cultivate not only the intellectual fruits of the student, but their character as well, it should come as no surprise that not only is a challenging course demanded of the student in their time

at Mesa Preparatory Academy, but a senior thesis is also requisite in order to graduate. It could be said that the senior thesis is the capstone of the student’s entire career at Mesa Prep, for everything the student has learned at their time at Mesa Preparatory Academy is needed to put forth the best paper that could be expected of a Great Hearts student.

In short, the thesis is a fifteen to twenty-five page paper that integrates three great works of literature or philosophy from throughout history. Though these texts are heavily relied upon in the structure of the paper, the senior thesis is by no means a book report. The goal is for students to present an analysis and synthesis of their chosen texts and ultimately formulate a unique conclusion, entering into the great conversation between philosophers and writers which has been unfolding throughout history. Taken as a cumulative whole, each senior thesis can be viewed as a single point or argument in that eternal discussion. Nothing makes this clearer than the individual approach each senior takes to their paper, for this allows for the greatest variety in the class. For example, below is shown the processes that the students nathan Babcock and Ben Mitten took to ensure the quality of their paper. Their different approaches and subjects reveal the exciting prospects of the senior thesis.

nAthAn’S APPrOAChFor example, in my senior thesis I examined the process of how humans find Truth using Plato, Descartes, and Tolstoy as my primary sources. I contrasted Descartes’ philosophy about the pursuit of Truth with the philosophy presented by Tolstoy in one of his short stories, and used Plato’s Allegory of the Cave as an overarching motif to tie the two together. My thesis explores the contradiction between Descartes and Tolstoy and offers a reconciliation of the two.

BEn’S APPrOAChMy thesis is primarily concerned with the subject of Liberty. Of course, due to liberty’s intrinsic relation to society, the paper equally deals with the relationship between the individual and the government and the care that is needed to preserve the well being of each entity. I decided to use the philosophers credited with pioneering the Social Contract Theory, Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, in hopes that this would elucidate the correct process and purpose of

government. Yet a discussion on the side of the individual was needed as well, so I decided to involve John Stuart Mill’s defense of the liberty of the individual in as well.

Writing a paper of this magnitude and depth is no small task. It begins near the end of junior year. During that summer students start to determine which three texts they are interested in using for their thesis. At the beginning of senior year they are paired up with a faculty advisor who will help them develop their thesis throughout the rest of the year. Once the three texts are selected, students gradually build towards their finished products through a series of outlines and rough drafts. The final copy is submitted just before Spring Break, at the end of the third quarter.

The project doesn’t end there, though. Sometime during the fourth quarter students must give an hour long defense of their thesis before a panel consisting of their advisor, the thesis director, and another faculty member, in addition to an audience of their peers. The defense opens with a brief summary of the thesis by the student, and then takes the format of a discussion between the student and the faculty panel. During the last few minutes the discussion is opened up to the audience as well.

By the end of all this, the student not only has an entire thesis under their writing resume, but they carry a sense of joy and pride in the participation of such an intellectual process. It is here where the true meaning of Mesa Preparatory Academy lies, in that the student has finally mastered their work ethic in a way that opens multiple possibilities for the student. No longer daunted by the fear of large work projects, a graduate of Mesa Preparatory Academy can go boldly forth with the confidence needed to meet a world in which the most dedicated workers are needed.

Where Excellence, Rigor, & Joy fill the day.

Liberty Arts Academy’s Paige Thulstrup Wins “Symbol of Freedom” Trip to Washington, DC

include a poster board portraying my topic. The theme was “A symbol of freedom” and we had the choice to do one of these three topics: What freedom means to me, why our history is important, or why we would like to go to DC. I chose to do mine on what freedom means to me, for that was more meaningful in my opinion. I chose to paint a lovebird, comparing it to your inner self. I then proceed to explain how inner beauty and outer beauty goes hand in hand, one is lost without the other.

What is the most memorable thing that you saw while you were in dC?Oh goodness! The Arlington National Cemetery, for sure! The Arlington National Cemetery is amazing. There’s just a sense of solemnness and respect that is just... Indescribable. This is my favorite place in DC, by far. Everyone is as silent as the dead itself, marveling and honoring the passed soldiers graves. The changing of the guards is so symbolic and... It’s just cool. Those guards amaze me. How can someone place their feet so gracefully and walk... so straight? How dedicated they are and on guard, carefully supporting their gun on their shoulder. Walking back and forth perfectly, the same marble expression plastered on his face. How perfect his timing, and how robotic his movements. It blows my mind. How birds and squirrels land atop the grave, how roses spring from the soil of the deceased. How new life comes from the passed, and survives off of the dead. This guard dedicates his time to watch over the dead, just to make sure they are safe. Although they are already passed, and you can’t hurt them any more, the dead is safe. It gave me pride, and respect. It was truly beautiful.

have you ever been in dC before? Would you want to go back?Actually, this was my first time on an airplane! I’d never thought I’d ever go to DC, it’s so far away and I have barely any time. However, I have to say, this was an experience like no other. I was almost sad to go home! I would soooooo go back! Soon, I hope! Next time I go, I HAVE to visit the Holocaust Museum! DC is beautiful, and so historically as well as culturally rich! It’s something I’ll never forget.

What was your favorite museum that you went to?I really liked the Natural History Museum. I loved seeing the actual ancient mummies, and all of the old Egyptian artifacts. And let’s not forget how amazing the dinosaurs are! Seeing all of the bone structures of many animals were fascinating, it’s strange how the bones actually look like the animal itself, you could guess what the animal had been just by looking at them. It was very interesting.

What do you want to be when you grow up?That is a good question, actually. I am still on a journey, not quite certain where I will end up. I have some things in mind, though. I would like to be a journalist, not quite certain what kind though. I also think that being a medical examiner would be a job that would not only be cool, but helpful as well. I know how hard a loved one’s death can be, and how confusing as well. I want families to depend on me to give them justice, and comfort. I suppose that to be a doctor, you have to be involved in journalism. So it works out well.

The Phoenix St. Patrick’s Day Parade began in 1983. Its purpose is to preserve and enhance the heritage and traditions of the Irish Culture as well as share that culture with the citizens of Arizona. This year was

the 27th Anniversary. The Parade had marching bands, Irish step dancers, bagpipers, police and fire vehicles, government dignitaries, floats, the 2011 Arizona Irish Colleen with her court and a whole lot more.

Saint Patrick’s Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and orange, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick’s Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries before the serious celebration begins.

In America cities with a large Irish population like Phoenix, St. Patrick’s Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, “wearing the green”, music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!
