RED DOOR DONATIONS
The Red Door has significant space problems accepting
donations at Christmas. To ease this situation for them
yet continue our support for their mission, donating gift
cards from many possible stores on their request list
would help and the small space demand would be a gift
in itself.
Grocery Cards in any amount from No Frills, Food
Basics, Price Chopper, Metro or Loblaws, and
Department store cards, Mall cards and iTunes gift cards
would be most welcome.
The guild will also be collecting cash at the November
meeting and a cheque will be written from the guild for
the total amount collected.

Peter and friend saw Barb at the Outdoor Art Show and thought she would
be a good speaker for our guild…thank you Peter.
http://www.barbhilts.com/
Barb’s home and studio is in Tottenham, north of
Toronto. She graduated from the Ontario College
of Art, after attending Sheridan School of Design.
Her main focus was weaving, and majored in
Textile Design. She continued her studies in textile
sciences at the University of Guelph.
While at OCA Barb was introduced to hand painted
silk. She was intrigued by the ability to produce
and control colour on fabric, particularly silk. For
more than 20 years Barb developed her own silk
painting techniques, selling and exhibiting her
scarves under the company name of Angles in both
Canada and the U.S. Barb had won several awards
for her silk painting. Although she no longer
pursues the production end of the craft; she still
enjoys exploring and developing surface design
techniques on cotton and silk creating one of a kind
pieces.
Currently she is pursuing techniques in the
manipulation of cloth. Her sculptural textile works
explore the intersection of the traditional
embroidery technique of smocking, and the
contemporary craft of painted silk.
Barb has exhibited her new work at shows and
exhibitions in Ontario, including the World of
Threads Festival, Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibit, The
Gladstone Hotel and recently at the Arts on the
Credit art show in Port Credit. In 2012 Barb was a
Niche Award Finalist in the U.S. and the winner of
the ''10th Anniversary Award of Excellence, at
Headwaters Arts Festival Show and Sale.

Past President Message
I have been a bad-d-d-d girl. Mid-
October, I was off to a series of
workshops with Elaine Quehl in
Saint John, NB as a guest of my
sister (now there’s a reason to visit
family!) and now have four new
UFOs. But I balance that against
the accomplishment I feel that
they are four UFOs worth finishing.
I have struggled for many years with art quilt classes:
no ideas, wrong fabrics, no way to measure if I was
making progress, but this time my ideas, fabrics and
Elaine’s excellently organized classes were all in
sync.
It is one of the most satisfying aspects of quilting, at
least to me. That one can see “that was then, this is
now” and that effort applied leads to improvement,
even if it a long time coming. My first art quilt class
was back in the mid-nineties, so I might be a slow
learner.
Seeing fellow guild members showing their work
gives all of us a chance to hear how the idea came in a
way that was doable, or a colour scheme was tweaked
to be more effective, or the quilting tied it all together.
And they see us acknowledge the pride in the
accomplishment, however simple or complex it might
be. And Christmas is the sharing season, so we are
looking for Christmas projects, new or old, for this
month’s meeting, so we can share those good feelings
of respect and admiration from our peers.
Certainly, despite the four UFOs, I feel a sense of
accomplishment from completing those workshops.
Unfortunately, I am thinking I need to totally re-jig
the values of one of the projects to achieve the effect I
wanted . . . .

Beth Donaldson seeking submissions of
quilts and stories to be featured in a new
book “Quilts and Health”
The following email was forwarded from member Bill B.
to Linda Van Lierde and is reprinted here for your
information and consideration.

Subject: Call for quilts
Hello,
My name is Beth Donaldson and I am the Coordinator of
the Quilt Index and I work at the Michigan State University
Museum in the quilt collection. My colleagues, Marsha
MacDowell, Clare Luz and I are co-authoring a book,
Quilts and Health. As you know, many quilt guilds make
charity quilts that are health related; Project Linus, Quilts
of Valor, Pink Ribbon, etc. etc. are all made to share
comfort and send good wishes.
We are looking for submissions of quilts and stories to be
featured in Quilts and Health. If your guild or any of its
members would like to be included in the book, send me an
email at [email protected].
We are seeking stories and images about your quilt guild’s
efforts in any health related quiltmaking. Here are some
questions we’d like to compile answers to for the book:
• How many years has your guild made quilts for charity?
• What charities has your guild given quilts to?
• How many quilts have you given away?
• Do you have a special day devoted to making charity
quilts?
• Have you made quilts to respond to a disaster (Hurricane
Katrina, Wildfires in California, etc.)?
• Has anyone in your guild received a health related quilt
(during chemotherapy, etc.)?
• Has quiltmaking provided therapy for you through a
tough time?
If you have any questions, or want to submit stories, quilt
images, quilt making images, please email Beth Donaldson
and [email protected].
Our deadline is Spring of 2016, so please let us hear from
you by January 4, 2016.
Thanks, Beth
Beth Donaldson
