east bay jewish choral festival to feature seminal masterpiece
TRANSCRIPT
In 1927, while director of the San Francisco Conservatory, Ernest Bloch began speaking to Cantor Reuben Rinder of Temple Emanuel in San Francisco about his plans to write the music for a temple service. After receiving a com-mission to compose such a work, Bloch truly threw himself into the process. According to his own estimates, he pre-pared himself by doing nearly two thou-sand (!) counterpoint exercises over a six-month period and spent about three months studying the text of the Shabbat Morning Service (as found in the “old” Union Prayer Book) in three languages:
East Bay Jewish Choral Festival to Feature Seminal MasterpieceWhen I was a sophomore in high school, I was bestowed the honor of singing in the California All-State Honor Choir. I had sung in choirs for a few years and had learned many songs, but had never sung a major work until I was singing with the Honor Choir. We were performing the Duruflé Requiem – I believe one of the most beautiful settings of the Latin Mass for the Dead. This was the first of many major sacred works I would perform for years to come. I thrilled at singing Bach’s B Minor Mass, I reveled in the beauty and power of singing Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem, and I was in awe of the Verdi Requiem.
Being the young Jewish man I was I always wondered, where were the Jewish works? When did I get to sing a concert of a major Jewish choral-orchestral work? It was not until I was in graduate school that I was introduced to Ernest Bloch’s Avodath Hakodesh, or Sacred Service. I was in awe of this most powerful piece writ-ten for cantor, choir, and orchestra. I reveled in singing my liturgy to music that while grand and epic, was flavored with the sounds of traditional Jewish music. I am so excited to present this piece at Temple Isaiah, in particular, because of it’s local history.

the original Hebrew, his native French, and his acquired English. He then moved to Switzerland to start work.
In a letter to the co-directors of the Conservatory he wrote, “I have now memorized entirely the whole Service in Hebrew. I know its significance word by word. But what is more impor-tant, I have absorbed it to the point that it has become mine, as if it were the very expression of my soul. It has become the very text I was after since the age of ten . . . a dream of stars of forces. I do not wish it for the Jews – who will probably fight it – not for the critics, nor for the ‘Tradition’! It has become a private affair between God and me.”
You will surely hear in his work the great attention to detail and the love and care for these ancient words. This piece is full of both climatic peaks, each one more thrilling than another, and still, soft moments that draw you in to the beauty of the melody and the lush harmonies of this neo-romantic work.
This year, we present this work as part of our annual East Bay Jewish Choral Festival. As is the case every year, we will collaborate with the choirs of Congregations B’nai Shalom and B’nai Tikvah. In addition this year we welcome the Concert Choir and Symphony Orchestra of Diablo Valley College under the direction of Bret Peppo. Bret and I were in graduate school at the University of Iowa together and have remained dear friends ever since. Harvesting Fruit Trees for Local Food Banks“And you shall not glean your vineyard, neither shall you gather the fallen fruit…you shall leave them for the poor and for the stranger.” - - - Leviticus 19
To “glean” means to collect left-over crops from a field that’s been harvested. The Torah teaches the leftovers should be left for the poor.
One initiative of our Kesher Community was to find ways to feed the poor and needy in Contra Costa County. Thus, Temple Isaiah joined forces with The Urban Farmers (“TUF”), a non-profit group that arranges gleaning projects of fruit trees that might not otherwise be harvested.
There are many ways to participate in Temple Isaiah’s TUF project. First, if you have any fruit trees, go to www.theurbanfarmers.org to register them. Each year, you will be notified at your trees’ harvest time and asked if you have extra fruit. If so, a group of vol-unteers will schedule a “gleaning” harvest. TUF has its own equipment, the required insurance, and skilled people to supervise the work. The fruit will be picked and sorted by volunteers who will leave you some (if you want), take some to local food banks and charities, and donate bruised and/or less edi-ble pieces to the Lindsay Wildlife Museum. You will receive a tax deduction form for your trees’ donation.
Other ways to participate are to volun-teer to “do” a harvest, help organize a group who will do a harvest, or become a trained supervisor. Rabbi Greninger and Bridget Wellerstein will kick off the first gleaning project on April 21 with kids and parents from Yad b’Yad, our K-2 Family Education Program.
Temple Isaiah hopes to find some ideal locations at the TI campus to create an orchard which will help feed both the bod-ies of the needy and the soul of our com-munity.
Documentary Film: PromisesJoin us Sunday, June 9, at 4 p.m. for Promises: A beautiful and deeply moving portrait of seven Palestinian and Israeli chil-dren. Promises follows the journey of a filmmaker who meets these children in and around Jerusalem, from a Palestinian refugee camp to an Israeli settlement in the West Bank. Although they live only 20 minutes apart, these children exist in completely separate worlds, divided by physical, his-torical and emotional boundaries. Promises explores the nature of these boundaries and tells the story of a few children who dared to cross the lines to meet their neighbors. The children of Promises offer refreshing, personal and sometimes humorous insight into the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
The film will be shown in our Adult Lounge on a big screen followed by a discus-sion led by Cantor Korn.

a strong connection to the people, the land, and the history of our people. As our rabbis have told us, Israel is our homeland. We truly feel that we are at home with our people in Eretz Yisrael. There is so much more for us to experience on this and future trips.
In the coming year, I plan to expand our Tempel’s focus to the Jewish com-munities around the world and in Israel. We will continue to develop our sense of Kesher within our own community and strengthen our commitment to social action. It is critical to reach further out
While traveling in IsraelI have had the great opportunity to write this column on Yom Ha’Atzmaut while participating in the East Bay Jewish Federation trip to Israel with many of our fellow Isaiah congregants. Yesterday was Israel’s Remembrance Day for the 25,000 who have fallen as soldiers or as victims of terrorism since 1948. It started the previous night with a one minute siren, followed by a memorial ceremony at Rabin Square. It was so emotionally moving to be with over 100,000 Israelis who were present to remember all of those who have fallen. We felt such solidarity with those in the square and the families of those who survive the losses. We also had the amazing experience visiting Israel ‘s Independence Hall, where David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the Jewish State in the land of Israel.
The terrible irony was that we awakened the next day April 16 to learn of the bombing at the Boston Marathon. All of us and the Israelis were shocked and horrified by this event.
As we are traveling early this morning to Masada, I have time to reflect on our experiences in Jerusalem at the Old City and the Western Wall as well as at Yad Vashem. Sandy and I feel such

beyond our comfort zone of Contra Costa and the East Bay to help advance religious pluralism in Israel and in at-risk communi-ties around the world. We will learn more about the World Union for Progressive Judaism and its efforts to serve those Jews who need our support for the practice of liberal Judaism in the face of orthodoxy or anti-semitism.
Sandy and I were able to complete our seder this year by say-ing “this year in Jerusalem!” May you and your family make the connection to Israel even stronger in the year ahead and experi-ence the exhilaration during your own trip to Israel.

Hospice Volunteers Needed In Your AreaPatients who are nearing end of life have a variety of needs that can be filled by volunteers. Some patients have little or no support and are in need of companionship. Volunteer visits can include reading, journaling, helping with hobbies, and relieving family members and friends. Have you ever considered becom-ing a hospice volunteer? Volunteers must be at least 18 and have not suffered a close personal loss in the last 12 months. The commitment is usually 1-2 hours per week. Thorough train-ing will be provided to help volunteers feel comfortable with their assignments. There are patients in or near your town who are awaiting volunteer assistance. If you want to volunteer or get more information, contact Laurie Herbert at Odyssey Hospice at 925 737-0203 or [email protected].

Book Group: The Year of Living BiblicallyAt the next book group reading, Wednesday, May 22, Rabbi Greninger will lead the discussion on The Year of Living Biblically: One Man’s Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible, by A. J. Jacobs.
Raised in a secular family but increasingly interested in the rel-evance of faith in our modern world, A.J. Jacobs dives in headfirst and attempts to obey the Bible as literally as possible for one full year. He vows to follow the Ten Commandments – to be fruitful and multiply, to love his neighbor, but also to obey the hundreds of less publicized rules: to avoid wearing clothes made of mixed fibers, to play a ten-string harp, to stone adulterers. Jacobs’s extraordinary undertaking yields unexpected epiphanies and challenges. The Year of Living Biblically is part Cliff Notes to the Bible, part memoir, and part look into worlds unimaginable. Thou shalt not be able to put it down.

ANSHEI ISAIAH
Seth MoldoffAnshei IsaiahPresident
Cool Hats, Hot EatsAnshei Isaiah hosted another successful Men’s Retreat at the Westminster Retreat Center in April. Thanks to Nadav Rave for planning this event, and Rabbi Graetz and Joel Siegel for joining us and sharing their love of and respect for Shabbat.
My favorite part of the retreat was hearing Rabbi Graetz’s stories about life in Argentina and what brought him to America. We celebrated Shabbat, studied Torah, sang songs, ate well, walked, hiked, biked, and developed new and deepened existing friendships.
The Hat GuysAt our next event, Anshei Isaiah tips its
cap to the seemingly old-fashioned, but ever-stylish HAT! By special arrangement, The Hat Guys in Oakland will open just for us on Sunday, May 19. They have the largest hat inventory on the West Coast, and they’ll teach us about the collection and perhaps help with the purchase of a few choice top hats, fedoras, gamblers, tra-ditional westerns, or pork pies (which are kosher). Then we head to Amba Restaurant in Montclair for a catered lunch of salads, falafel, and dolmas ($13/person). Carpools will leave from the Temple at 10:20 a.m, and return by 3:45pm. Maximum sign-up: 25 guys. Contact: Bob Coleman at [email protected] or (925) 228-1756 if you would like to attend.
Annual Kickoff DinnerThen get ready for our Annual Kick-
off Dinner on Monday, June 3. We will be honoring our departed friend, Pierre Hirsch, with a Rajun Cajun menu prepared by Temple Isaiah’s Bill Broussard. A live New Orleans style jazz band will provide entertainment.
Please plan to join us at one or more of these events to expand your network of friends at Temple Isaiah.
