Animal Migration – Big Animal Trips Read the following to find out about animals and migration. This week we are going

to look at the migration of the caribou and the humpback whales.

Have you ever gone on a trip

away from home? 1

Maybe you travelled in a car to

see some family or took a plane

to go somewhere fun on

vacation! 2

Well, did you know that a lot

of animals take trips, too?

3

Many different kinds of

animals move from one

place to another. Like the

Humpback Whale, the

Caribou and the Arctic Tern. 4

And when they do, we say they

migrate. 5

But not all kinds of trips that

animals make are considered

migration.

6

When Squeaks moves from

the lab to the kitchen, we

don’t call that a migration. 7

Sorry, Squeaks...but we can call

it snack time!

8

Most of the time, migration

means moving over a long

distance. So, animals can

migrate to different parts of a

country...or even different

parts of the world! 9

Now, migrations also happen

at a certain time.

10

For example, you might have

seen birds flying south for the

winter. That's a kind of

migration!

11

But they’re not just going on

a trip for fun.

12

Animals migrate for good

reasons.

13

Many birds migrate in the

winter because the weather is

too cold for them, so they need

to go someplace warmer.

14

Other animals migrate long

distances to look for food.

15

And sometimes, creatures

migrate so that they can have

babies in a place they know

is safe.

16

It doesn’t matter if the animals

move over land

17

...through water

18

...or in the air.

If an animal moves a certain

distance and does it at a

certain time...it’s a pretty

good bet they’re migrating.

19

So, what are we waiting for?

Let’s take a look at some cool

animal migrations!

20

Let’s meet the champion of

migration on land...the

caribou.

21

Caribou live way up north,

in places like Northern

Canada and the state of

Alaska. 22

And one group of caribou is

called a herd.

23

moves around this area in a

big loop...and they do it

every year. 24

For most of the winter, this

herd of caribou lives here,

right on the border between

Canada

and Alaska.

25

Then, in early spring, around

April, the caribou go on the

move. They travel about 600

kilometres north, to an area near

the ocean. 26

And this place near the coast

has lots of food for the

caribou to eat.

27

This is where the mother

caribou have their babies!

28

But it’s not such a great place

for long! That’s because by the

middle of summer, the coast

becomes home to big swarms of

mosquitos and other biting

insects!

29

So the herd goes on the move

again...this time they move

away from the ocean.

30

Then, in the fall, when

things start to get very cold,

they move back south where

there’s more food, and the

weather is less harsh.

31

Finally, when spring

arrives...they start all over

again! At the end of the year,

some of these caribou have

walked almost 5,000

kilometres! Whew! 32

When it comes to migrations

in the sea, whales go farther

than any other kind of

animal.

33

Lots of kinds of whales

migrate, but the whale that

migrates the farthest is this

one—the humpback whale.

34

Most kinds of humpbacks spend

the summer in cool waters up

north, near places like Alaska.

35

Krill and

Small fish are eaten by humpback

whales.

All summer they eat things

like krill and small fish,

building up the energy they’ll

need for the trip they’re about

to take. 36

When the water starts to get

too cool, the humpbacks

swim south to warmer

waters near Hawaii and other

tropical islands.

37

There, the whales rest and have

their babies. And they stay there

until the babies are strong

enough to swim back north. It

can be a long swim, too! The

longest recorded swim for a

humpback whale is over 15,000

kilometres!

38

Here are some more animals that migrate:

The Arctic Tern

The Monarch Butterfly

North American Atlantic salmon

Globe Skimmer Dragonfly

That’s all for this week. I hope you learnt about why animals migrate and some of the animals that migrate.

Secret Kid’s Business Shh!

You have a secret mission to create something special for someone in your family for Father’s Day 2021

Here are some ideas for you. You will need another person to help you to be successful in this mission!

Find a special rock in the garden and paint or draw a design on it.

Print off this game of I Spy and play it as a family on Father’s Day.

Print of one of these colouring sheets and do your best colouring. Add some holes and ribbon and create a wall hanging.

Does your special someone love sports? Create a card using this print off. Write a special message inside it to say how much you love them.

Trace your hand and create some vouchers for your special someone to cash in with you. You will be able to help them around the house with some jobs. You could:

• Help in the garden

• Help wash the car

• Play a game with them

• A big hug

• Breakfast in bed

Print off the template for this card and glue pieces of paper to the heart. Write a thoughtful message

inside.
