EARLY CLOSE EVERY WEDNESDAY AT 2.30PM
Dear Parents and Friends,
SIZZLING SUCCESSSIZZLING SUCCESS
Our congratulations to Stacey Jackson, Michelle Del Nero and the great group of volunteers (names elsewhere in this Informer) who gave of their time to ensure that our first sausage sizzle was a resounding success. The Association had covered costs by 12.15PM and it was all profits from there in. At the end of the day there was a clear profit of $1,657.45. Well done, a brilliant group effort superbly organised for the benefit of all our children.
SCHOOL COUNCIL MATTESCHOOL COUNCIL MATTERSRS
Sincere thanks to our School Council who met on the 15, August. Major items discussed and ratified were:
1. Language Other Than English (LOTE) 2014. It was decided to send out a questionnaire to all parents to get their views on what language we should teach our children. These questionnaires accompany this Informer.
2. Homework Policy: The draft of this Policy was ratified and will be implemented in 2014. It sets down clear guidelines on time commitment, supervision and marking.
3. Sponsors: Several applications to sponsor/support our school financially were considered and, following refinement will be accepted.
4. Specialist Music Classes 2014: The Year 4 children are currently being tested in Music aptitude to offer flute and clarinet lessons in 2014.
These children will be taught by peripatetic music teachers from the School Of Instrumental Music.
The only cost to children will be the hire of instruments and associated insurance of the instrument.
5. Independent Public School (IPS- 2015):
Training to receive this status will commence later
this year. An initial briefing will be held to give
Council attendees a snapshot of requirements.

TIMES TABLESTIMES TABLES
One of the most talked about topics (and usually hated
things in maths!)
Do we need to teach children times tables? YES!
The main reason to learn to ‘sing’ or chant the times tables in the past was to work things out quickly.
BUT……...
Children need to learn how times tables work - how the number facts are related to adding up and how these facts can be used to solve grouping or sharing problems. They need to know how the knowledge of number facts can help with adding up long lists of things quickly.
Children may not be learning tables the way we used to learn them. We try to explain and give them opportunities to see all the situations adults use tables in and why we can do this. This adds to their knowledge of addition and subtraction facts by being able to multiply groups of things.
WRITTEN MATHS AND ALWRITTEN MATHS AND ALGORITHMSGORITHMS
When children are in primary school they are learning about the basic building blocks of maths, how and why we do the things we do, and where we use maths in our daily lives..
In primary school the pre-existing knowledge children have is consolidated and they are asked to solve problems that show their understanding. We do this by giving children a context for doing mathematics, such as:
• Splitting the class into groups before doing an activity.
• Keeping count of how many days they’ve been at school and doing activities based on the number.
• Working out how much pocket money they get in a year and what they could buy if they saved it all, or saved half.

THE PROBLEM SOLVING MODELTHE PROBLEM SOLVING MODEL
There is an eleven step problem solving model used in the PATHS programme by children in the older grades (a three step model in the junior grades) when they notice that they have upset feelings or confusion as an indication that there is a problem. The steps are introduced one at a time and numerous opportunities are given in the classroom for practice and review. Students are given real and hypothetical situations for problem solving.
The eleven steps are:
1. STOP and CALM down (take a breath)
2. IDENTIFY the PROBLEM (collect lots of information)
3. IDENTIFY the FEELINGS (yours and other people’s)
4. DECIDE on a GOAL
5. THINK of possibly SOLUTIONS
6. THINK of the CONSEQUENCES (what might happen)
7. CHOOSE the BEST SOLUTION
8. Make a PLAN
9. TRY your PLAN
10. EVALUATE (how did it go?)
11. TRY AGAIN (if you need to)
The four main techniques used in the classroom for making generalisations about Problem Solving are to:
• First, use dialogue during a real life situation
• Next, promote generalisations about real situations with the assistance of a Problem Solving box
• Holding Problem Solving meetings
• Lastly, to encourage the students to use the problem solving skills in their academic work and for planning of assignments.
Through-out the learning of the Problem Solving skills, your child will learn to identify problems to stop and think of possible solutions before taking action. The main emphasis is to encourage students to think first, rather than react to the first idea or impulse that comes to mind.

Hi Everyone,
Just a few reminders this week. Firstly, we hope everyone has returned their order forms and payment for the KidzaBuzz books as they were due in this Friday, 23 August. Orders will be place early Monday morning and once the books arrive they will be given to the eldest child of each family.
Secondly, our next P&C meeting is to be held on Monday, 2 September at 9AM in the school library, we look forward to seeing you there.
Another great fortnight with 75 of our students participating in banking.
Our next event is for Father’s Day where we will be setting up a stall in the undercover area on Thursday, 29 August and Friday, 30 August. Please see the attached flyer for more information.
Finally, as everyone knows the P&C participated in our first Bunning’s Sausage Sizzle at Malaga last Saturday, 17 August. I am very pleased to announce it was a resounding success. With a great outcome in helping us achieve our main fundraising focus, that being to contribute towards the purchase of a projector for our school and its students in the undercover area. This would not have been achieved without the following fabulous parents; Michelle Del Nero, Craig Johnson, Julie Rogers, Carly Hearn, Ryan Baker, Tony Jackson, Kylie Warner, Caterina McKenzie, Grant Whiteley, Dom Bingham, Tanya Howell, Angela Taylor, Jackie Turner, Andrea Stone and lets us not forget our wonderful Principal, his two Deputies, School Officer Shelly Osborne, her partner Dale Reid and last but certainly not the least our very own school groundsman Justin Longbottom who volunteered their smiles and most importantly their time throughout the day. A very big heartfelt thank you. Everyone was simply amazing. Finally, I would like to thank the families who came down on the day to support us by purchasing a sausage sizzle and saying hello. All in all it was a huge day, with a great atmosphere.
Be safe and keep smiling.
