JAPAN LINE DEFIEXTR A DITION IN NA31E£Ever wonder about the "Maru" after the name of all Japa-
nese vessels?Well, the Japan Line, operating to the West Coast, has
decided to do something about it and announces that hence-forth its ships will drop the "Maru" and will be known withthe prefix "Japan" followed by the names of flowers (fortankers) and trees (for dry cargo vessels).
The origin of "Maru" after the name of vessels stems fromancient times when warships used it as a suffix to their name, since the word conveyed the thought of a castle surroundedby water--e.g., a warship a floating "Maru."
As years went on, as Japan became a great seafaring na-tion trading with the western world and with a commercialfleet of her own, the "Maru" was added after the name ofevery vessel. Oddly enough, however, the warships laterdropped the su~ix so that it now applies only to the com-mercial vessels.
It is not yet apparent whether the Japan Line’s actionwill find favor with the N.Y.K., Mitsui-O.S.K., Yamashita-Shin-nihon, Kawasaki or other Japanese Lines operating out of thePort of Houston. The NEW YORK MARU, YAMATAKA MARU,AKAGISAN MARU and others continue our frequent visitors.
Meanwhile, San Francisco and other West Coast ports willbe seeing the JAPAN LILY, the JAPAN ELM, JAPAN PINE andothers in the new fleet of the Japan Line.
Somehow, it just won’t seem the same.
