CLUB  NEWS

As  the  weather  gets  increasingly  hotter,  our  GCM  team  will  be  doing  their  best   to   keep   the   golf   course   in   the   best   possible   shape.   You  will   notice   some  small   areas   around   the   course   that   have   been   aerated   as  well   as   some   small  patches   on   the   greens.   These   areas   will   heal   quickly   and   we   trust   that   they  won’t  disrupt  play  too  much.       The   bent   grass   greens   are   especially   sensitive   to   extreme   heat   and  humidity  so  our  GCM  team  will  be  hand  watering  during  the  day  on  many  of  the  greens.  Please  respect  the  fact  that  this  will  benefit  the  Club  in  the  end  and  be  patient  as  our  team  is  watering.         You  will  also  see  many  greens  with   large  fans  around  them.    These  fans  are   essential   to   keeping   the   greens   cool   and   although   they   may   occasionally  come   in   to   play,   they   play   a   very   important   role   throughout   the   summer  months.         The  water   edging   is   now   finished   on   the   18th   hole   and  work   is  moving  along  on  other  water  hazard  edges   such  as   the  2nd  and  9th  holes.  The   finished  product  on  18  looks  fantastic  and  will  undoubtedly  provide  some  excitement  on  any  golf  shot  that  heads  in  that  direction.  Please  be  cautious  when  hitting  shots  toward  any  of  the  team  working  on  the  project.           As   always,  we   thank   you   for   your   understanding  with   regards   to   these  matters  and  if  you  have  any  questions  or  comments,  please  feel  free  to  let  me  know  at  any  time.

Yours  sincerely,

GOLF  NEWS

The  112th  U.S  Open  By  Gavin  Eckford

The   second  Major   of   the   year   took   place  from   June   14th-‐17th   and   as   usual,   the   US  Open   provided   a   great   challenge   to   the  best  players  in  the  world.  Unlike  last  year’s  US   Open   at   Congressional,   where   the  greens   and   fairways   were   relatively   soft,  allowing   Rory   McIlroy   to   shoot   a   record-‐breaking  16  under  par,  this  year’s  US  Open  was   back   to   being   firm   and   unforgiving.  Although   relatively   short   at   7170   yards,  The  Olympic  Club   in  San  Fransisco  proved  to  be  too  much  to  handle  for  many  of  the  world’s   finest   golfers   including   last   year’s  champion,  Rory  McIlroy,  and  the  world  #1,  Luke  Donald,  who  both  missed  the  cut.

I  had  the  great  pleasure  of  playing  The  Olympic  Club  many  years  ago  and  although  it   is  difficult  to   see   on   television,   the   golf   course   has   a  couple  of  distinguishing  features  that  make  it  a  very  challenging  test  of  golf.  The  greens  at  this  year’s  US  Open  are  really  small  in  comparison  to  most   Tour   golf   courses   and   they   are   also   very  undulated.   This,   combined   with   really   firm  USGA  greens  means  that  it  is  incredibly  difficult  to  stop  a  golf  ball  on  the  green,  especially  out  of  5  inch  USGA  rough.  To  add  a  further  challenge,  most  of   the   fairways   are   sloped   from  one   side  to  the  other  which  makes  it  a  struggle  to  keep  a  ball  in  the  fairway  as  they  are  also  very  firm.  For  this   reason,   we   saw   a   lot   of   balls   land   in   the  fairway  and  end  up  in  the  rough.

GOLF  NEWS

Any   time  Tiger   is   in   the  hunt,   there   is  a   certain  level   of   excitement   brought   to   the   tournament  and   this   year   was   no   exception.   After   two  rounds,  Tiger  was  in  a  very  familiar  position,  tied  for   the   lead.   Unlike   so   many   other   times   over  the  years,  The  Olympic  Club  got  the  best  of  Tiger  and  he  faded  away  over  the  weekend  along  with  many   of   the   other   favorites   including   Phil  Mickelson.

The  US  Open  tends  to  provide  great  finishes  because  birdies  are  so  difficult  to  come  by  and  bogeys  and  double   bogeys   can   show  up   at   any   time.   This  makes   for   a   very   volatile   leader   board  where  everyone  wants  to  be  aggressive  to  make  birdies  but  they  must  be  cautious  as  to  avoid  making  big  numbers.  As  proven  this  week,  hanging  out  around  par  is  usually  a  great  place  to  be  at  a  US  Open.

Not   much   was   talked   about   Webb   Simpson   as   after   two   rounds   as   he   sat   at   5   over   par   after  opening   rounds   of   73   and   72.   He   posted   a   solid   68   on   day   3   which   moved   him   well   up   the  leaderboard  and  put  him  in  a  position  to  contend  on  Sunday.  As  with  many  US  Opens  in  the  past,  sometimes  it  is  a  race  to  see  who  can  post  a  low  score  early  and  wait  for  everyone  else  to  back  up  coming  down  the  stretch.  Simpson  posted  another  solid  68  on  Sunday  and  avoided  charges  from  Major  winners   Jim  Furyk,  Graeme  McDowell  and  Padraig  Harrington.  The   rest  of   the   field   simply  could  not  hang  on   leaving  Webb  Simpson  to  hold  the  coveted  trophy  high  with  a  final  score  of  1  over  par  for  the  week.

The  US  Open  is  always  filled  with  great  stories  for  many  reasons  but  this  tournament  is  truly  “open”  to   anybody   who   can   make   it   through   the   qualifying   tournaments.   There   were   a   number   of  amateurs   in   the   field,   of   whom   Jordan   Spieth,   Patrick   Cantlay,   and   high-‐school   student   Beau  Hossler  all  made  the  cut  and  posted  very  respectable  finishes.  There  was  also  much  to  talk  about  before  the  tournament  begun  due  to  the  youngest  player  to  ever  qualify  for  the  US  Open,  China’s  very  own  Andy  Zhang.  The  14  year  made  headlines  all  over  the  world  when  Brandt  Snedeker  and  Paul  Casey  both  withdrew  from  the  tournament,   leaving  a  spot  for  the  second  alternate  to  make  history.   Although   Zhang   had   a   shaky   start   both   days,   he   composed   himself   well   and   this   will  certainly  not  be  the  last  that  we  will  see  of  this  young  man.

The   long   history   of   the   US   Open   and   the   difficult   conditions   always   make   for   an   exciting  tournament  and  this  year  was  another  great  example.  After  a  long  grueling  battle  with  The  Olympic  Club,  Webb  Simpson  has  added  his  name  to  history  with  a  very  solid  performance.  It’s  time  now  to  turn  our  focus  to  Royal  Lytham  and  St  Annes  for  the  British  Open  in  July.  Links  golf  always  makes  for   something   a   little   different   and   hopefully   the   third  Major   of   the   year   will   provide   as   much  excitement  as  the  first  two.

WHAT’S  IN  THE  BAG?

What’s  In  Gavin  Eckford’s  Bag?  By  Gavin  Eckford

Last month, we looked at Teaching Pro, Robbie Sherwin ’s golf clubs. This month, we will take a look in my golf bag to

see what clubs I use when I take on the golf course.

The  world  of  golf  equipment  has  changed  dramatically   over   the   past   30   years.  Woods   are   no   longer  made   of  wood   and  Irons   are   no   longer   made   of   iron   having  been  replaced  by  Titanium  and  Steel.  Over  the   past   10   years,   there   has   been   a   big  change   toward   custom   fitting   and  moveable   weight   technology.   Although  this   is   fairly   new   to   the   masses,   tour  players  have  been  doing   this   for  decades,  just  using  slightly  different  methods.

In   today’s   game,   we   can   order   iron   sets  with   custom   lofts   and   lie   angles.   In   the  past,   a   set   of   clubs   would   come   “stock”  and   the   Golf   Professionals   would   bend  them  to  the  required  angles,  and  grind  off  bounce   and   sole   shape.   With   today’s  woods,  we   can  move  weights   around   the  head,   change   lie   and   loft   angles,   and  switch   shafts   to   make   a   custom   fit   very  quickly   and   easily.   In   the   past,   the   Golf  Professionals   would   attach   lead   tape   to  the  clubheads  to  get  a  similar  effect.

To  be  continued…

Like  recent  PGA  Tour  winner  and  long  ball  hitter  Dustin  Johnson,

Gavin  has  a  full  bag  of  Taylormade  golf  equipment.

WHAT’S  IN  THE  BAG?

For   Irons,   I   use   Taylormade   Tour   Preferred,  MC   Forged,   4   iron-‐PW  with   Dynamic  Gold   S300   shafts,   2   degrees   upright   and   1/2”   overlength.   This   may   sound   very  detailed  but   it  makes  a  big  difference  to  the  ball   flight  of  our  shots  when  we  have  the  correct  specifications.  As  a  forged  iron,  they  feel  great  when  you  hit  them  solidly  and  it   is  easier  to  shape  golf  shots  and  change  the  ball  flight.  For  most  players,  we  are  looking  to  reduce  how  much  the  ball  moves  and  have  it  go  straighter  and  to  do  that,   I   recommend   the   Rocketballz   (RBZ)   irons   or   the   brand   new   Gloire   set   from  Taylormade.

I  use  a  Taylormade  R11s  TP  Driver  that  has  plenty  of  moveable  weight  technology  to  allow  for  a  perfect  custom  fit  for  my  desired  ball  flight.  With  9  degrees  of  loft  and  an  Aldila  RIP  Phenom  65  shaft,  it  is  a  great  club,  again,  to  create  specific  ball  flights.  For  most   players,   the   RBZ   and   Gloire   lines   provide   great   distance   and   straighter   shot  patters.

My  putter  is  a  Taylormade  Ghost  Spider  35”  which,  again,  has  moveable  weights  to  get  the  right  feel  for  my  game.  It  is  very  easy  to  line  up  putts  and  keep  the  clubface  square   through   impact.   There   is   a   lot   of   perimeter  weighting  which   increases   the  MOI.   This  putter   is   used  by  many  Tour  Professionals   and   is   a   great  putter   for   any  level  of  player.  My  putting  has  really  improved  since  switching  to  this  putter.

Here is a complete list of what’s in Gavin Eckford’s bag:

Driver:  Taylormade  R11s  TP,  Aldila  RIP  Phenom  65  Stiff  shaft  Fairway  Woods:  14.5  degree  R11s,  Aldila  RIP  Phenom  80  Stiff  shaft  Hybrids:  16  and  19  degree  Rescue,  Aldila  RIP  TP  Stiff  shaft  Irons:  Taylormade  Tour  Preferred  MC  Forged,  Dynamic  Gold  S300,  2  degrees  upright,  ½”  overlength  Wedges:  ATV  54  and  60  degree  Putter:  Taylormade  Ghost  Spider,  35”

Rule  18:  Ball  At  Rest  Moved

Golf:  A  game  of  34  rules  but  many  variables

If  you  unintentionally  move  your  ball  during  a  search,  you  must  put  it  back,  and  you  will  receive  a  one  shot  penalty  (without  penalty  if  you  searching  in  abnormal  ground  conditions  or  in  obstructions).  If  you  do  not  put  it  back,  you  will  be  playing  from  the  wrong  spot,  and  you  will  incur  a  2  shot  penalty.      If  a  fellow-‐player  moves  the  ball  it  must  also  be  put

back  but  this  does  not  incur  a  penalty.

Rule  12:  Identifying  The  Ball

By  Robbie  Sherwin

If  you  cannot  tell  whether  the  ball  found  is  yours,  you  are  allowed  to  mark  the  ball  and  pick  it  up  for  identification.  However,  before  doing  so,  you  must  inform  a  fellow-‐player  of  this  and  give  him

the  opportunity  to  observe  the  procedure;  otherwise,  you  will  incur  a  penalty  of  1  stroke.  If  necessary,  you  may  clean  the  ball  but  only  to  the  extent  needed  for  identification.  The  ball  is  then

to  be  put  back  on  exactly  the  same  spot.

June  has  been  a  great  month  for  the  Sheshan  Junior  Elite  Team.  Our  Elite  Team  was  founded  earlier  this  year  and  consists  of  the  top  8  junior  golfers  at  Sheshan.  Elite  team

members  Victor  Zhou  and  Yoko  Tai  both  won  their  respective  tournaments.

Traveling  to  Scotland,  Yoko  Tai  finished  in  first  place  winning  the  2012  US  Kids  European  Championship.  Only  8.5  years  old,  Yoko  won  her  age  division  by  posting  3  consecutive  9-‐

hole  rounds  at  even  par  or  better.  Yoko  finished  the  tournament  at  1  under  par.

Traveling  to  Chong  Qing,  Victor  Zhou  was  able  to  record  his  first  victory  of  the  2012  season  by  shooting  80-‐79  over  36  holes  to  successfully  capture  the  Chong  Qing  Junior

Invitational.

Congratulations  to  both  Victor  and  Yoko  for  their  tournament  wins  and  we  want  to  wish  all  our  junior  elite  players  who  will  be  traveling  to  America  for  summer  tournaments  the
