creative with the workflow and trends on remodels and new construction, as we
prepare for the highly anticipated Spring season.

In the past few years, Americans have gotten quite creative with their vacations during the economic downturn. Many homeowners have decided to invest in their backyards and vacation at home in lieu of spending thousands of dollars on plane tickets, hotels and meals out. Vacationing at home has become so popular that the term ‘Staycation’ was coined.
Many of our customer’s at CL Industries have adopted the ‘Staycation’, and we have even tailored a line of quartz finishes to compliment the ‘Staycation Pool’. Our latest video in our Finish for Every Pool campaign features this very pool. Our approach was to create a fun commercial that gave the illusion of a modern family on a tropical vacation. The ‘Staycation Pool’ is revealed when the boy performs a parent soaking cannonball. We had a lot of fun with this shoot, and we hope you
can envision your family enjoying a ‘Staycation’ by finishing your swimming pool with KrystalKrete.
Give the video a watch and send in your ‘Staycation Pool’ pictures!

According to Wikipedia, a ‘Staycation’ is a period in which an individual or family stays home and participates in leisure activities within driving distance, sleeping in their own beds at night. Some common activities listed are using the backyard pool, visiting local parks and museums, and attending local festivals. Some ‘Staycationers’ have gone so far as to follow a set of rules such as setting a start and end date, planning ahead and avoiding a routine all with the hopes of creating the feel of a traditional vacation. In 2009, the term was even added to Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary.
The “Staycation”
Aquavations’ Hydrazzo is known for its timeless beauty and
easy maintenance in any environment. Its unique formulation
provides resistance to spot etching, permanent scale, and
algae adhesion. Our Hydrazzo line of products have long been
regarded as the smoothest non-slip natural finishes on the
market.
The Hydrazzo and Hydrazzo Classico products were invented
in the early 2000’s to fulfill a new niche in the swimming pool
market. Hydrazzo was the first polished finish in the industry,
and has set the premium standard in pool finish innovation.
These specialty finishes are popular in a variety of pools
including “entertainment pools” and spas due to their ability to
be polished to achieve a smooth uniform luster. Aquavations’
Hydrazzo combines naturally beautiful coarse graded
crystalline and colored marble, along with White Portland
cement and a host of other performance-enhancing ingredients
to create the ultimate pool coating.
Toughness without Roughness!
Product Spotlight
Hydrazzo Classico adds colored glass
accents to the original formula. It’s the
smoothest of all CL Industries’ products.
(Picture above from John Garner Pools.
Applied by Tempool Inc.)
Hydrazzo Classico Oceana Blu was
specifically picked to match perfectly
with the tiles around the water line of
this Florida pool. The actual plaster
color of Oceana Blu on the steps
and sun bench are more of a muted,
grayer blue. Once Oceana Blu is in the
deep end of the pool, its luster shines
throughout the oceanic blue colored
water.
The final step of this plaster’s application is what makes
Hydrazzo products so special. At first a water driven polisher
(Triton) is used to polish the finish. This unlocks the marble’s
natural beauty and luster. The color of the marble becomes
breath taking during the polishing process because the color
becomes intensified. The applicator is careful to stay away from
the tile line to prevent the diamond abrasives from scratching
the tile.
(Do not exceed 2500 PSI.)
Then a Hydro-Glove with the Hydro Abrasives are used to hand
polish the hard to get areas such as inside corners of steps,
bench seats, swim-outs, waterline tile and around light niches.
We usually recommend giving the homeowner a used Hydro-
Pad for future removal of stains or rough areas. (Allow the
tool to do the work.) Polishing this extraordinarily strong finish
creates a hand crafted pool that the applicator and homeowner
are proud to call their own.

Pool of Innovation Waterscapes Backyard Resorts
Pool Highlights:
Our winter Pool of Innovation was built by the
talented Lee Seelig of Waterscapes Backyard
Resorts, LLC. Waterscapes started in 1978 with Lee
and 2 workers subcontracting work. Now they offer
in-house construction on all phases of their work.
Waterscapes has been using CL Industries’
products for 14 years and now uses Hydrazzo
products exclusively.
Hailing from the “Country Music Capital” in
Nashville, TN, he honors his clients’ privacy
and doesn’t submit his impressive work to pool
competitions. As you can see, his work speaks
for itself. Lee Seelig explains how he’s become so
successful. “Take care of the customer and do what
you say you will do, and stay in communication
with the customer.”

Q&AWhat do you like most about designing/building pools?
Where do you get your inspiration from in the design process?
Why did you choose certain trees and plants for this pool?
What was the homeowner’s idea behind creating 2 pools?
In terms of water color, what did the homeowner want and why?
I like the capability of being creative and meeting new clients who become friends of myself, and our company.
I get my inspiration from just looking at a site, and listening to customers’ wants and needs. This guides me on the design.
Bill Hewitt with Hewitt Landscaping created the landscape. We choose these plants because there is no maintenance and we wanted a natural setting.
The 1st pool is a reef pool with everyone hanging out in this pool and shallow enough to play near the water spouts. The 2nd pool is set for a water slide entry and kids dive off the rock cliffs.
They were were looking for a natural pond look in one pool, and a more clean shallow blue water in the other. We went with Hydrazzo Maui Midnight for the natural pond look and Hydrazzo Classico for the lighter blue look.

We recently interviewed owner, Lee Seelig, to pick his brain about his
extensive pool design experience and to gain some insight in to our
Winter Pool of Innovation.

The entire CL Industries’ team would like to thank Lee Seelig and
Waterscapes Backyard Resorts for their submission and patronage.
What physical design elements did you incorporate to tie everything together in regard to water color?
Explain the importance of the applicator in the pool construction process?
What do you like most about the CL Industries/product lines?
For night time, what kind of lighting did you use?
How have the homeowners reacted to the finished product?
We used Natural rocks for the Maui Midnight pool, with natural stone coping and real stone on the pool wall for the tile line. This is a very organic pool. 1st pool is a reef pool so the look is a little cleaner look. It has a little more structured look.
Tom Martin at CL Industries helped us understand the application process and their importance. The applicator can make or break a job, so they’re extremely important to the overall success of the job.
They have a great look, they stand behind their products, and pools installed 14 years ago look as good as when we first installed.
We used all LED lighting (Zodiac) multi-color.
They absolutely love it and they entertain around it constantly.

How did you first get involved in the Pool Industry?
I relocated to Florida in 1998 after being a Union Plasterer in Chicago for approximately 18 years. I was given the opportunity to become involved in the pool plastering and manufacturing business when my father, also a 25 year plaster veteran, suggested that I look into becoming a swimming pool cement representative, as he had.
What territory do you cover?
Being a native of the Midwest, CLI Industries felt I was best suited as the Territory Sales Manager for Illinois, Wisconsin, Minneapolis, North and South Dakota, Iowa, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Canada.
What CL Industries’ finish is most popular in your territory and why?
Although we manufacture several types of pool finishes, the predominant choice in the Midwest is KrystalKrete, our exposed aggregate, and Hydrazzo, our polished marble finish. KrystalKrete offers a wide variety of colors with a nonslip texture, and it has durability to last years
Mike Kopke was born into the plaster industry, and his knowledge of the craft shows throughout his territory.
Mike has owned a pool plaster and acrylic decking company, and he has stayed well rounded in the industry,
from manufacturing to installation.
We caught up with the jovial Mr. Kopke to shed some light on trends in his territory and the industry as a
whole…

above and beyond standard marcite pool plaster. Hydrazzo, which is a slight upgrade, is becoming more popular with its smooth polished texture and durability to withstand staining and the harsh winters. Pools plastered with Hydrazzo may be drained, acid washed and re-polished as years go by, to give it the luster of a new pool.
What professional experience do you bring to the CL Industries sales team?
From young adult to present I have been involved in the plaster business in one way or another, from residential to commercial projects both domestically and internationally. I furthered my career and knowledge by becoming the owner of a pool plastering and acrylic decking company from 2002 through 2009. I have been involved in every aspect of this industry, from manufacturing to installation.
What has helped you become so successful in the pool industry?
With having hands on experience and being a licensed contractor and business owner, both builders and applicators appreciate having a knowledgeable representative who understands all aspects of pool construction. I am able to assist in both designing custom colors to putting on training and hands on seminars in the art of fine tuning pool plastering.
What are some of your goals while working with CL Industries?
As a territory manager, my goals are to educate builders, applicators and homeowners of the benefits of the various pool finishes, with the latest techniques and products to best suit their needs.
Mike having fun in the snow!
