Dear Customer,

This is our Standard Product Catalog of brushed DC Servo Motors. It is designed to offer a flexible product line that can be ordered as shown or customized to individual users needs. It offers over 40,000 potential model combinations. This offers OEM customers the flexibility to assemble prototypes quickly and still easily customize the final product. For over 30 years Dynetic Systems has built a reputation based on producing quality products and offering excellent service. That tradition is carried on today by our talented and dedicated design and manufacturing staff and supported by one of the most helpful sales and support organizations. We have many years of application experience with mechanical and electrical aspects of motion control which is exceeded only by our personalized support and thorough discussion of your applications. Our specialty is integrating gearing, encoders, tachometers, filters and brakes with servo motors to provide a cost effective solution to your application opportunities.

Dynetic Systems assembles the entire line in the USA under strict quality standards. Only the highest quality materials are used in the manufacturing process. We test, run in, serilize and inspect every motor before it ships. Our dock to stock programs are highly sought after in the industry. We eliminate a step in your production process with our pre-qualification of the motors.

Unique and innovative designs such as hollow shaft motors for vacuum and wire feed applications, wet motor designs for jet fuel pumps and custom EMI/RFI filters to meet FAA, military, aerospace and CE requirements keep Dynetic Systems ahead of the curve.

Dynetic Systems Vision is “Superior craftsmanship, individualized customization, innovative materials and design, uncompromising reliability and personalized support for your motion control products which are designed to meet and exceed your expectations to deliver peace of mind.”

High-grade quality materials, experienced craftsmanship, unique designs, a fine-tuned manufacturing process with a painstaking quality control system, 100% testing and protective packaging result in a motion control product from Dynetic Systems that performs 24/7. We begin with a standard motor design that has been tried and tested over the past 30 years for its reliability, durability and longevity. We listen closely to the customers needs allowing us to design the motor to work seamlessly in the application. Each order is custom wound to match the customers power/speed requirements. Every motor is tested, run in for hours and then retested before shipping to assure quality. Gearheads, Encoders and Brakes are available as options.

Our mission is to design, manufacture and distribute precision quality AC and DC motors, actuators, and related motion control products that seamlessly operate in your equipment/devices. Dynetic Systems has been dedicated to these principles since our inception in 1972. Our production associates are true craftsmen in every sense of the word. Each motor has a significant “Hand Made” content to assure the highest possible quality. Our attention to detail extends to all phases of the manufacturing process and is unique in the industry. We offer flexibility and delivery performance with our dock to stock program.

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT

DYNETIC SYSTEMSArmatures for the standard product line are all wound in our plant in the United States. This allows the flexibility to add custom components such as shafts of special size and material and high temperature lams or adhesives. Each motor is wound to specifications matched to the customers application needs. They are individually balanced to assure a smooth, long wearing motor.

We use name brand instrument grade ball bearings of ABEC 3 grade or better. All bearings are certified to Dynetic’s quality standard with exacting tolerances. Upgrades for special applications like sealing, dust protection, extreme temperature and tight tolerances are available on most every motor we manufacture.

Dynetic motors are specifically designed to offer a wide range of shaft

One of the largest differences in our motors is that we use strong machine parts instead of sintered metal cast parts. End caps are machined from solid core aluminum. The housing is a solid machined steel tube offering additional strength.

Motor components such as end caps, housings, flanges and other components are machined from high quality metals instead of being cast from sintered metal. This offers strength, better tolerances, easy customization and longer life. Special or custom applications are much easier to accommodate.

Most applications call for some type of special mounting feature. Both the front and rear end caps of our motor are machined from aluminum stock. It is easy to add mounting holes or design brackets that fit your application.

Dynetic motor design allows for a wide range of shaft configurations. Unlike most manufactures, we do not demand high quantity orders for special shafts. Standard shafts are machined from 303 stainless steel. Special high grades of stainless steel such as 416 are also available. Hardening of the shaft is offered when needed. Keyways, flats, and special machined ends are easily done at the customers request. Hobbed shafts for gearing or pressed on gears can be added.

Our Engineering staff is available to the customer. They work directly with the customer to develop the right motor for the application. Our staff has designed many different types of motors and controls including: • PMDC & AC• BLDC• 400 Hz AC• Wound Field

Mechanical design is done on SolidWorks solid - modeling software. Electrical design and performance calculations are done on “SPEED”, an industry leading motor design software package.

If you are selling to the government or competing in today’s marketplace you know how important it is to have suppliers with pre-qualified off the shelf COTS products. Using COTS shortens development time and allows you to be cost effective. Motion systems can be difficult and expensive.Let our engineers suggest a less expensive and more reliable solution.

Recently a major military supplier tested a variety of gear-motors from different manufacturers. Ours was the only one that passed all of the tests. While subjected to harsh environments from -40ºC to 70ºC, rain, sleet, hail, electrical interference and contaminated chemical agents all required operating performance, specifications were met.

DYNETIC SYSTEMS

Selecting a motor for your application is easy with out 3 step selection process. All you do is first select the motor size, then select the motor control (encoders and brakes), then select the gear head and ratio. You are done. Each model and size in the catalog has a motor power chart and drawing for form and fit, a second section with drawings on the control and then a third with gearing and ratios. Just complete the 1,2,3 step process. If you need a special configuration, please contact our applications engineers at 1-800-899-4372.

POWER: WATTS, HP or required Torque – (DC Motors are rated by continuous and peak torque. AC Motors are rated by Watts of output power).

DUTY CYCLE: Is the motor running all the time or how often does it turn off and on and how long does it run.

SPEED: RPMs of the final output. If the motor requires a gearhead, Dynetic can custom wind the armature to meet any speed necessary.

SIZE: Physics dictates that the power of the motor will determine the size. It is a good idea to select a motor before designing the envelope. Although we have only 3 standard diameters, other sizes are available. Each diameter motor is available in different “stack lengths” which offer a range of power options.

ENVIRONMENT: Extreme temperature, electrical filtering, sealed, extreme shock or vibration are just a few of the special circumstances we need to be aware of when configuring a motor. All of these require special materials, construction and handling.

GEARHEAD SELECTION

Dynetic Systems manufactures a premium motor. It is important to match it to a similar quality gearhead. We build some gearheads, use customer suggested gearheads and suggest a wide range of gearheads that have been tested and selected to perform in specific industries or applications. We work to match these various gearheads to our motor creating a quality gearmotor package.

Our gearmotors range from standard industrial grade up to and including aerospace/military grades. We have planetary, spur, planetary right angle and worm right angle gear trains.

Some options available include:

• MIL-STD Specs

• Cold Temperature Operation

• Hi radial and axial load compensation

• Ratios to 10,757:1

• Sealed to IP67

• Custom mounting

• Special shaft size

• Machined output shaft

• External gearing

INTRODUCTION

STANDARD HIGH QUALITY

Our standard line of planetary gearheads come in NEMA, Metric, Inches and Imperial output configurations. This is a comprehensive line covering most sizes and works in most applications. The modular design of this gearhead makes customization very easy. You can specify input and output to fit your needs or select one of our standard gearheads to save money. The planetary design offers excellent efficiencies. All the gears are machined from a high variety of steel. Most models offer complete steel construction. This line comes standard with a helical input stage reducing noise dramatically. We refer to it as our “quiet” gearhead. The input stage can be made from hardened plastic gears or a combination of metal and plastic to reduce noise even further with increased torque capabilities. Specifications include:• Ratios to 10,757:1• Up to 5 stages• Low Backlash• Customizable output• Standard NEMA models• Competitive replacement models• Modular system for flexibility• Direct motor mounting standard• Mounting flanges optional

GI LINE

These extremely high strength gearheads offer a very low backlash down to 3 arc minutes. They are constructed with needle bearing on planet gears and come standard with Viton O-Ring sealing. They can handle large axial and radial loads. This gearhead performs in some very extreme environments. Options available include:• Custom output shaft• Standard NEMA mounting• With or without mounting hub• Ratios up to 700:1• Temperature Range -50°C to 232°C• Extremely low temp grease available

GCRA LINEA Right Angle Planetary gearhead with all of the same features of the GC gearhead with an added right angle 1:1 gearing. Extremely high efficiency for right angles. Check with us for customization.

HIGH TORQUE LOW BACKLASH

GC LINE

This gear line is specially suited for medical applications, but can be used whenever a precision gearhead is needed. Used as a mid-range low backlash gearhead. It offers a very nice power to size ratio. Offered in only Metric bolt configurations and limited customization. Consult our list for various mounting options.

GYW LINE This is a Right Angle Worm gearhead. A very compact design, this lightweight aluminum body coupled with machined steel gears offers a very quiet and extremely smooth package. Available on our MR09, MR15 and MS15, MS22 motors.

GHRA LINEThis Right Angle Worm gearhead offers oversized bearings for higher shock and radial load capacity. This gearhead also features Resinol RT (MIL-STD-276) vacuum impregnated housing and caps for protection and sealing.

Dynetic Systems offers three levels of motors. Standard motors such as the MS15 Line, Custom-Standard where we modify our standard line, and Custom-Custom where we change form, fit, or function of our standard motors including completely new motor designs to fit the customer’s application.

The Custom-Standard line uses our base motor construction and adds features and benefits not in the standard product line such as custom gearing, special wire harnesses, MIL-STD connectors, special shafts, encoders, brakes and filtering.

A Custom-Custom motor is one that may be based off our current line with changes to the form, fit and function, or it may be a completely new motor design including frameless motors. When possible we maintain the original electrical-mechanical design of a standard motor to assure a successful and predictable final product.

Our Application department and Engineering design staff work directly with our customers to insure our product meets the customers’ requirements. Motor characteristics, performance curves, drawings, models, etc are exchanged and discussed to insure all product details are covered.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

GENERAL

What information do I need to provide in order for you to help me select an appropriate motor solution for my application? The absolute minimum information required to properly select a motor solution is the supply voltage, available continuous and peak current, load torque, speed at load, and desired motor technology (brush or brushless). It is also helpful to have a description of the application, duty cycle (time on, time off), ambient temperature, and motor size requirements (maximum diameter, length, and weight). Other application details that can be important include radial or axial loads, environmental conditions (exposure to water, dust, humidity extremes, special atmospheres), feedback requirements (encoder resolution), EMI/RFI suppression requirements, and brake requirements. For positioning applications, load inertia, angular displacement, move time, and friction torque can be provided instead of load torque and speed at load.

How do I calculate my load torque? The torque requirement for an application can be calculated, measured directly using a torque measuring device (torque watch), or measured indirectly using a DC motor. When using a motor, measure the current draw of the motor under load, and calculate the torque using the equation below:T = (I - INL) x (KT x N x h) Where: I = Current T = Torque KT = Torque Constant N = Gear Ratio (Equals 1 if there is no gearbox) h = Gearbox Efficiency (Equals 1 if there is no gearbox) INL = No-Load Current

Please be aware that this equation approximates the true load torque and does not take thermal conditions into consideration. The results are reasonably close and suitable for most purposes.

How do I calculate the rated speed or the speed at a specific torque for a motor or gearmotor? The output speed for a motor or gearmotor is given by the equation below:w = [VS - (I x Rmt)] / (KE x N) Where: w = Speed VS = Supply Voltage I = Current (Obtained from previous equation) Rmt = Motor Terminal Resistance KE = Back-EMF Constant N = Gear Ratio (Equals 1 if there is no gearbox)Maximum continuous (rated) current can be obtained from the previous equation and used as the current value to obtain the speed at the maximum continuous (rated) torque. Please be aware that this equation approximates the motor speed and does not take thermal conditions into consideration. The results are reasonably close and suitable for most purposes.

Do I have to run a motor at the rated voltage? No. The voltage shown for the available motor windings is listed as a reference voltage, and it is just that. Certain motor parameters, including no-load speed, peak torque and peak current are voltage dependent. Therefore, a voltage must be chosen in order to show these values. The choice is subjective to a degree, but provides a convenient way of comparing different motor windings.

Are your motors and gearmotors reversible?Yes. All of our brush-commutated units are reversible. Simply reversing the polarity to the motor terminals or leads will reverse the output direction of our brush-commutated units.

Does Dynetic Systems offer any EMI/RFI filtering?Yes. Dynetic Systems offers custom EMI/RFI filters to meet FAA, military, aerospace and CE requirements.

Can I buy replacement brushes, gears, etc?We can typically offer replacement components such as brushes or gears for our products. Please be aware that orders for component parts such as brushes and gears are subject to minimum quantity requirements (the exact requirement can be ascertained by contacting our sales department). Please also be aware that while it is generally technically possible to replace the brushes or brush assemblies, it is not always practical. By the time brushes have finally worn out, significant brush-dust has typically accumulated within the motor. Additionally, the commutator, bearings and gears have also experienced some degree of wear. These conditions are often impractical to correct and will typically contribute to a reduced time to failure than was experienced with the original brush set.

GLOSSARY

Acceleration/Deceleration The time rate of change in velocity; acceleration refers to an increase in velocity, while deceleration refers to a decrease in velocity. Generally expressed as radians/sec/sec. Board-mounted trimmer potentiometers let users adjust the time it take for the motor to reach set speed.

Actuator A device that converts various forms of energy, when given an input, to rotating or linear mechanical motion such as a motor.

Air-Gap The area between the rotating and stationary members of an electric motor.

Alternating Current (AC) Electrical current flow, usually generated by the utilities at 60 Hz, which continuously reverses direction in the middle of its cycle. Mathematically, it follows a sine wave; it travels from zero, then reaches a maximum in one direction, decreases to zero, then reverses to reach a maximum in the opposite direction.

Ambient Temperature The temperature of the medium, usually air, around a device such as a motor or drive.

Ampere (AMP) The standard unit of electrical current, or rate of electron flow. A closed-loop electrical circuit with one volt of potential difference across one Ohm of resistance causes one ampere of current to flow.

Applied (or input) Voltage (Va) is the DC voltage measured at the motor terminals.

Armature The armature is the rotating member of an electric motor. In brush-type DC motors, it consists of the main current carrying windings (conductors) in the rotor. The commutator switches the power supply to the armature windings to generate a magnetic field.

Armature Inertia (Ja) is the property of the armature causing it to resist changes in its rotation speed, expressed in oz-in-sec2(squared)

Assigned Power Rating [W] Is the characteristic output continuous power of this type of motor and is only attained at elevated speeds.

Back-Emf Also known as counter emf (cemf), it is the voltage produced across motor windings, due to the winding turns being cut by a magnetic field, during rotation of the motor. The back-emf is directly proportional to rotor velocity and opposite in polarity to the applied voltage. This static voltage arises from the generator action in a motor, even if the motor winding are not energized.

Trapezoidal is a four-layer (n-p-n-p) device with an MOS-gated channel connecting the two n-type regions. In the normal mode of operation, a positive voltage is applied to the anode (A) relative to the cathode (K).

Sinusoidal A uniform wave that is generated by a single frequency. A geometric waveform that oscillates (moves up, down or side-to-side) periodically, and is defined by the function y = sin x.

Backlash In a mechanical system, backlash is the relative motion between two devices, connected by a coupler, gear, screw, etc.

Bidirectional motors have equal performance characteristics in CW and CCW rotation.

Bridge Rectifier A section of the DC drive that converts the AC power supply into a DC source.

Brushes The current conducting material, usually carbon or graphite, which rests directly on the commutator of brush-type DC motor. They transmit current from the power supply to the armature.

Capacitor A device which hold electrical charge for a period of time, prevents the flow of direct current and allows the flow of alternating current. These components serve as filters in DC drives to provide a “cleaner” DC signal to the motor.

Chassis Open construction of a drive for mounting with a customer’s existing enclosure or control console

Choke A filter device consisting of an inductor and a resistor. Although more expensive than a typical RC filter, they exhibit better performance.

Closed-loop A system that uses feedback information to regulate the output response. The output feeds back to a controller for comparison to the input command; any difference results in a corresponding change in the input command. Thus, the accuracy increases.

Cogging refers to shaft rotation occurring in jerks or increments rather than smooth continuous motion. The non-uniform (“jerky”) rotation results from the armature’s propensity to certain discrete angular positions. The interaction of the armature coils entering and leaving magnetic fields, produced by the filed coils or permanent magnets, causes speed changes. The armature tends to speed up and slow down as it cuts through the fields during rotation. Cogging is very apparent at low speeds, and determines a motor’s speed range.

Commutator A device mounted on the armature shaft and consisting of a number of wedge shaped copper segments arranged around the shaft. These segments are insulated from the shaft and from each other. The motor brushes ride on the periphery of the commutator, and electrically connect and switch the armature coils to the power source.

Conductor Any material, such as copper or aluminum, which offers little resistance to the flow of electric current.

Current Limit (Torque Limit) This feature permits the operator to adjust the maximum current the motor can draw. This, in effect, limits the maximum torque the motor will produce.

Dynamic Braking A way of quickly stopping a motor by disconnecting the power source. The rotating motor then becomes a generator. When connected to a resistor, the

energy of rotation is then dissipated as heat in the resistor.

Duty Cycle The ratio of operating time versus total cycle time of a motor. A motor has a continuous duty rating if it continues to operate for an indefinite amount of time and its normal operating temperature remains within the temperature limits of its insulation system. A motor has an intermittent duty rating if it never reaches a steady temperature, but is allowed to cool between operations.

Efficiency of a motor is the ratio of output power to input power, and is expressed in percent.

Electrical Time Constant (Tm) reflects the time necessary for current to rise to 63.2% of final value, and may be calculated by La/Ra

EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) - When an electrical disturbance from a natural phenomena (e.g., lightning or ESD) or an electrical/electronic device or system causes an undesired conducted or radiated response in a victim. EMI is the opposite of EMC.

EMI Filtering A circuit or device containing series- inductive and parallel-capacitive components that provide a low impedance path for high-frequency noise around a protected circuit.

Enclosure A description of the motor or drive housing. The selected enclosure depends on the application’s environment and heat generated by the device.

Filter An electrical device used to suppress electrical noise, or to improve the DC output to a DC motor.

Flyback Diode This is a super fast recovery diode that snubs current and voltage spikes as a result of the fast transients that occur when IGBT, and MOSFETS are turned on and off quickly.

Form Factor indicates how much AC component resides in the DC output from DC drives. Represented mathematically as the ratio of a signal’s root-mean square current value to its overage current value. Any form factor value greater than one means that some of the current produces heat instead of torque.

Four-quadrant This term refers to a drive’s ability to control the velocity and torque of a motor in either direction of rotation. The direction of torque can be in the opposite direction of the velocity for applications requiring braking or deceleration. Single-quadrant drives, on the other hand, only produce torque and velocity in the same direction of rotation.

Frequency refers to how often a complete cycle occurs in a unit of time. Frequency is usually measured in cycles per second, or Hertz, where 1 cycle/second equals 1 Hz. The standard AC power supply in the USA is 60 Hz, while 50 Hz remains common in many other countries of the world.
