CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire return to action after a week off, their last match a 2-0 to the Colorado Rapids on April 1 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The Fire are in a tie for seventh place in the Eastern Conference with 4 points from 3 games. LAST MATCH

The Rapids opened the scoring in the 58th minute. Newcomer Martín Rivero placed a perfect long ball through to the streaking Brian Mullan down the right flank, and he then centered to a wide-open Cummings. The Jamaican then coolly slotted home for his second goal of the season.

The Rapids added an insurance goal in the second minute of second-half stoppage time through Kamani Hill. The forward collected a pass from Wells Thompson and fired a shot at Paolo Tornaghi, which rebounded straight back to the newly acquired Hill, who then sent a powerful finish to the back of the net from the rebound.

Fire head coach Frank Klopas made one change to the team that claimed a 1-0 victory against Philadelphia Union at Toyota Park. Rafael Robayo made his first MLS start, replacing Dan Gargan.

CHICAGO FIRE (4-3-1-2): Paolo Tornaghi - Logan Pause (Orr Barouch 83), Cory Gibbs, Jalil Anibaba, Gonzalo Segares - Rafael Robayo (Daniel Paladini 61), Pavel Pardo, Marco Pappa (Federico Puppo 78) - Sebastian Grazzini - Patrick Nyarko, Dominic Oduro.

TEAM NEWS The Fire are coming off their first defeat of the season, and their first shutout of the campaign. “We basically played like a 4-4-1-1 and matched up a little bit better in the middle and were a little bit better with

the ball. But still in the final third, movement without the ball was not good,” said Fire manager Frank Klopas. “We just looked flat. We weren’t really very good on the day. We had a couple of opportunities but I felt we didn’t make them really pay for it on a couple chances. It’s a tough one, it’s disappointing and we’ve just got to move on.”

Page 4: Dynamo vs. Fire game notes

MLS GAME INFORMATION

The Fire suffered a blow in their week off when defender Cory Gibbs suffered an injury to his right knee that required surgery for a torn meniscus. He is expected to miss 4-6 months.

“I’ve dealt with injuries in the past and have come back to perform at a high level. I hate missing training and contributing in games so from the first day after the operation, I’m going to do everything I can to get back as soon as possible,” Gibbs said.

Gibbs’ absence means former German international Arne Friedrich will almost certainly be called upon to start against the Dynamo. Friedrich had targeted this week for his return to action, and played 88 minutes in a bye week match against the University of Louisville.

"This is my target,’" said Friedrich. "(Saturday) was my first game after six months. I’m about 70 percent, but to be 100 percent I need some games.’"

Said Klopas: “It’s great that we have someone like Arne, with experience who can also step in and communicate and help the guys around him. It’s unfortunate, because Cory’s very important to the team. You try to have depth in the team when opportunities arise, you never want it to come to situations like this.”

In addition, the Fire again expect to have fullback Dan Gargan available. He missed the Colorado match with a toe injury; Logan Pause moved from the midfield back to right back.

“I think it’s a really unfortunate result for us especially coming in here and starting the game off well and coming into halftime at zeros,” said Pause. “I think the game was for the taking and I think in the second half we kind of lost our shape and discipline a little bit and we ended up getting punished.”

In the bye week, the Fire defeated the University of Louisville 1-0. The game’s lone goal was scored by Marco Pappa after 12 minutes. Klopas used the match to run out 21 players.

A year ago, the Fire were 1-1-1 after three games. But after the loss in Game 3 – a 2-1 defeat at Seattle – Chicago did not win again until June 12 (going 11 games without a victory), and that win was their lone in league play until mid-August.

“It’s just one game,” said striker Patrick Nyarko. “You look around the game, and Colorado is one of the toughest places to play in the league. We’re not going to go kill ourselves over this.”

HOUSTON DYNAMO The Houston Dynamo return to action after a two-week layoff, their last match a 2-0 loss to Seattle Sounders FC on March 23 at CenturyLink Field. The Dynamo are in a three-way tie for third place in the Eastern Conference with 6 points from 2 games. LAST MATCH

Sounders FC grabbed control of the match with two goals in a five-minute span. In the 23rd minute, a corner kick was headed outside the area to where David Estrada waited. His long-range blast deflected off Dynamo defender Geoff Cameron on its way into the net, leaving goalkeeper Tally Hall with no chance.

Cameron’s nightmare continued three minutes later when referee Balmodero Toledo whistled the Dynamo center back for undercutting Patrick Ianni during a Seattle corner kick. Brad Evans converted the resulting penalty to put Seattle ahead 2-0.

Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear made one change to the team that defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 at AT&T Park. Corey Ashe returned to left back in place of Jermaine Taylor.

HOUSTON DYNAMO (4-4-2): Tally Hall - Andre Hainault (Jermaine Taylor 46), Geoff Cameron, Bobby Boswell, Corey Ashe - Colin Clark, Adam Moffat, Je-Vaughn Watson (Luiz Camargo 67), Brad Davis - Brian Ching (Macoumba Kandji 76), Will Bruin.

TEAM NEWS The Dynamo resume their seven-game road swing to start the 2012 season after two weeks off from league

play. After the loss in Seattle, the Dynamo first lost midfielder Colin Clark when he was suspended three games for

using unacceptable and offensive language toward a ball boy at CenturyLink Field. Then, the MLS Disciplinary Committee suspended midfielder Adam Moffat for one game for a reckless

challenge which endangered the safety of his opponent in the Sounders FC match. A week before the Fire match, the Dynamo suffered a third blow when midfielder Brad Davis suffered a strain in

his left calf. “The good news is it’s not as bad as I thought it was going to be,” said Davis. “This little thing is the nature of

the beast and it can happen at any time. It’s frustrating because I want to be out there competing but the good news I’ll be ready to go sooner rather than later.”

Said Kinnear: “It’s not so good knowing Colin’s not going to play and Adam’s not going to play. We talked at the beginning of the season about testing the team’s depth and this will definitely be one of those times if Brad’s not going to be able to make it.”

An option to fill a midfield spot could be Nathan Sturgis – who, like teammate Geoff Cameron, can also figure as a central defender.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

“It’s a challenge to play positions that are different going from center back to midfield,” Cameron said. “He’s a good player technically and this could be a good opportunity to get on the field and we’re looking forward to having him on the field if he comes in for Moffat or whoever he steps in for. He won’t miss a beat because we’re there around him and will support him.”

The game is the first for Houston against Eastern Conference opposition, after opening with three Western Conference foes. But the next four games to complete the season-opening road swing are all against teams from the East.

“You have to make sure you take care of those Eastern Conference games because they can be six point swings,” defender Calen Carr said. “We want to make sure to do well, especially in the ones away from home. We want to stay near the top of the table because we’ve got high goals for this season.” Added striker Brian Ching: “It’s an opportunity for us as most would tend to agree the teams in the West are a little stronger and that may make it easier to come out with the best record in the league. We have to take advantage of it.”

Heading into the Fire match, the Dynamo defeated the PDL Laredo Heat 5-0 in a training match. Mac Kandji and Cam Weaver each scored twice and Brian Ching rounded out the scoring; rookie Brian Ownby set up two of the goals.

Fire Pregame starts at 5:30 p.m. CT on Comcast SportsNet. After kicking off the season earning a 1-1 draw in front of 58,912 in Montreal (March 17) and a 1-0 Opening Night victory over Philadelphia (March 24), the Fire tasted their first defeat of 2012, as a 58th minute goal from Omar Cummings and stoppage time striker from Kamani Hill saw the Fire fall 2-0 at Colorado on April 1. QUICK KICKS vs. Houston Dynamo (2-1-0; 6 pts. 2 GF, 2 GA)

Since 2006, the Fire are 3-6-3 all-time against the Dynamo The Fire are 1-3-2 in home matches vs. Houston. While both teams come into the match after being idle last

week. Houston hasn’t played a league match since March 23. The match marks the return of Houston forward Calen Carr to

Chicago. Carr joined the Dynamo in a trade which saw Dominic Oduro come to Chicago on March 23, 2011.

While the Fire will be without Cory Gibbs (meniscus tear), the Dynamo will be without both Colin Clark and Adam Moffatt who are serving suspensions handed down by the MLS Disciplinary Committee.

A LOOK AT THE FIRE The Chicago Fire (1-0-1, 4pts.) enter their 15th season of MLS play after rebounding midseason to post a 9-9-16 record, which left the side three points outside of the playoffs in 2011. Locking up the likes of Pavel Pardo and Logan Pause this past offseason, the team returns the entirety of its starting eleven to Toyota Park in 2012, while adding Uruguayan striker Federico Puppo, Zimbabwean forward Kheli Dube and Colombian midfielder Rafael Robayo to support the Ghanaian tandem of Dominic Oduro and Patrick Nyarko. The team also reinforced their defensive corps in the offseason by adding German World Cup veteran Arne Friedrich as well as two young defenders via the MLS SuperDraft in center back Austin Berry and left back Hunter Jumper who will be expected to provide cover for the likes of Cory Gibbs, Jalil Anibaba, Gonzalo Segares and Dan Gargan in 2012. FRIEDRICH DEBUTS IN FIRE’S 1-0 FRIENDLY VICTORY OVER UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE During a bye week from MLS action, the Chicago Fire used a 12th minute strike from Guatemalan international Marco Pappa to earn a 1-0 victory over the University of Louisville Saturday morning at the Toyota Park Practice Field. Playing for the first time in over six months, newly acquired Fire defender Arne Friedrich went 88 minutes in his first game action for the Men in Red. The Fire pressured early and found the lone goal of the match in the 12th minute when Marco Pappa took the ball off the foot of striker Federico Puppo at the top of the 18-yard box and unleashed a curling shot past Louisville goalkeeper Zach Torp into the upper left corner of the goal. The Men in Red continued to look dangerous offensively and almost doubled their lead in the 15th minute when Puppo lobbed his strike mate Orr Barouch into the box. The Israeli youth international’s first time effort was kick saved by Torp and then cleared off the line by a Cardinals defender. Continuing to pressure after the break, the Fire nearly added an insurance goal in the 79th minute when rookie defender Hunter Jumper made a spirited run down the left sideline before serving a ball into the box that was headed off the line by a Louisville defender, leaving the Fire with a 1-0 victory. FIRE TASTE FIRST DEFEAT OF 2012 IN 2-0 LOSS AT COLORADO The Chicago Fire were undone as a pair of second half goals from Colorado Rapids forwards Omar Cummings and Kamani Hill propelled the Rapids (3-1-0, nine points) over the Fire (1-1-1, four points), 2-0, at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Sunday, April 1. Entering the match after the first victory of the season, Fire head coach Frank Klopas tinkered with the Starting XI, slotting Fire captain Logan Pause in at right back for an injured Dan Gargan and giving Colombian Rafael Robayo his first starting nod of the young campaign. The Fire nearly broke through in the 38th minute as Marco Pappa found Dominic Oduro darting into space. The fleet Ghanaian collected the pass in stride before firing a low, driving effort into Rapids’ ‘keeper Matt Pickens. Despite chances on both sides, the first interval finished deadlocked at 0-0. The home side found the opening tally in the 58th minute when newly acquired midfielder Martin Rivero played a hopeful ball over the top of the Fire defense to Brian Mullan on the right flank. The veteran Rapids midfielder tracked down the ball at the endline before sending a precision pass to Omar Cummings in the box. The Jamaican forward met the pass and buried his shot past Paolo Tornaghi to give the Rapids a 1-0 advantage. Searching for the equalizer, Sebastian Grazzini played a ball in behind the Rapids defense finding Oduro charging into space. The Fire forward ripped a shot on goal that Pickens punched away in the 68th minute. The Rapids found a second goal in the waning moments of the match. Hill, making his Rapids and MLS debut, picked up a loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box. The former Bundesliga forward cranked a shot that Tornaghi was equal to only for the rebound to fall directly to the UCLA product who in-turn calmly placed his second effort into the back of the net at the far post in the 92nd minute. FIRE DEFENDER CORY GIBBS UNDERGOES SUCCESSFUL SURGERY TO REPAIR TORN RIGHT MENISCUS The Chicago Fire Soccer Club announced Tuesday that veteran defender Cory Gibbs underwent successful surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee on Tuesday, April 10 at Glenbrook Hospital. The surgery was performed by team orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jason Koh from the NorthShore Medical Group. Gibbs suffered the injury during training on April 4. He is expected to be out for approximately four to six months. “The first couple days after hearing about the injury was basically another low point in my life,” said Gibbs. “With all the support from my wife, family, teammates and with prayer, I definitely have a more positive outlook today. I’ve dealt with injuries in the past and have come back to perform at a high level. I hate missing training and contributing in games so from the first day after the operation, I’m going to do everything I can to get back as soon as possible.” The club’s 2011 Defender of the Year, Gibbs has played every minute of all three games this season for the Men in Red. FIRE RE-SIGN VETERAN FORWARD PATRICK NYARKO The Chicago Fire Soccer Club announced last week that the club has re-signed Ghanaian forward Patrick Nyarko. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. “Keeping Patrick with the Fire was a big goal of ours over the last year,” said Fire head coach Frank Klopas. “With his speed and ability to change pace, he’s shown to be one of the most threatening attackers in MLS over the last few years and is key to our attack.” Selected in the first round (seventh overall) of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, Nyarko heads into his fifth season in Chicago as one of the most experienced players on the Fire roster with 99 games played since his rookie year. Following his initial season in MLS, the Virginia Tech product became an integral part of the Fire, with his 90 regular season appearances being the most of any Fire player the past four seasons while also leading the club with a combined 19 assists from 2010-11. Originally selected as a forward, the fleet-footed 26-year-old has shown the ability to play on either wing but it was his move back up front with fellow countryman Dominic Oduro midway through last season that propelled the Fire to the brink of the MLS Cup playoffs and the second best finish in club history at 7-2-1. Nyarko recently began his international career, earning his first cap while playing 45 minutes for Ghana in a 1-1 draw against Chile on February 29 in Chester, Penn. TORNAGHI TAKES MLS SAVE OF THE WEEK Off last week, the Fire’s Italian goalkeeper Paolo Tornaghi still took MLS Save of the Week honors for his impressive save on Martin Rivero’s 67th minute effort in the Fire’s 2-0 loss at Colorado on April 1.

ODURO AND CARR FACE FORMER TEAMS JUST A YEAR AFTER EARLY SEASON SWAP Former Fire forward Calen Carr returns to Chicago while Dominic Oduro gets set to face his former side in Sunday night’s clash. The two swapped teams on March 23, 2011 in a trade that should be considered mutually beneficial for both clubs. Following his exit from Houston, Oduro went on to have a breakout MLS campaign, using his 12 regular season goals to become the first Fire player since Damani Ralph in 2004 to tally double-digit goals in an MLS campaign. The Ghanaian striker added two more game winners in the club’s run to the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final before being named last season’s Fire Most Valuable Player, Section 8 Chicago Supporters Player of the Year and a finalist for MLS Comeback Player of the Year. Oduro’s 14 goals in just over one season with the Fire is more than Carr has tallied over the course of his entire MLS career. The Fire’s first round selection in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft, Carr recovered from early season concussion symptoms , before going on to appear in 13 competitive matches, scoring two goals to help the Dynamo to the 2011 MLS Cup Final. APPEARANCE MILESTONES FOR NYARKO, SEGARES With an appearance in Sunday’s match vs. Houston, Chicago Fire veterans Gonzalo Segares and Patrick Nyarko are both set to mark career milestones. After hitting his 150th appearance on April 1 at Colorado, eighth year Fire defender Gonzalo Segares will tie former teammate Jim Curtin at ninth on the club’s all-time regular season appearance list on Sunday. If he stays healthy throughout 2012, the Costa Rican international could move as high as sixth on the list. See below who’s in front of him… Rank Player Fire Appearances Years with the Fire 1 C.J. An appearance on Sunday would also make Nyarko the fifth fastest Fire player to 100 games. See below those that achieved 100 faster. From there the team went on a nine match winless streak, resulting in head coach Carlos de los Cobos being relieved of his duties on May 31. With the move, Fire Technical Director Frank Klopas moved down from the Front Office to take over the coaching reins on an interim basis and led the team to its first win in 12 matches with a late, dramatic 1-0 victory on June 12 at Columbus. Despite the victory, the Fire struggled in the league through much of the summer but found a way to navigate through the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 1-0 victory over Rochester on June 28 and a 4-0 win over Red Bull New York on July 12 putting the team into the tournament semifinals for the first time since 2006. The midseason acquisitions of Pavel Pardo, Sebastian Grazzini and Dan Gargan reinforced the Fire and helped the team begin a late summer run with matching 2-0 victories over Toronto FC (August 21) and the Colorado Rapids (August 28) before booking a spot in an MLS record sixth U.S. Open Cup final with a 2-1 semifinal victory over Richmond on August 30. The team recovered from their early season struggles, in which they won only two of their first 20 matches, to end 2011 with the club’s second best regular season record at 7-2-1 and just three points out of the MLS Cup playoffs.

DYNAMO VS. CHICAGO FIRE – HOUSTON BACK ON THE PITCH AFTER 22 DAY-BREAK The Houston Dynamo and Chicago Fire meet at Toyota Park on Sunday night, ending a 22‐day layoff for the

Dynamo after their 2‐0 setback in Seattle on March 23.  Houston continues its seven‐game season‐opening road

trip with its first match of the season against an Eastern Conference foe. The Dynamo allowed their first goals of

the season in the 2‐0 loss at Seattle. In the 23rd minute, Sounders forward David Estrada pounced on a Houston

clearance of a corner kick and took a low shot from 25 yards. His shot deflected off Geoff Cameron’s foot and

went the opposite direction of Dynamo keeper Tally Hall for the opening goal. Four minutes later, Cameron was

called for a penalty on a push in the back on former Dynamo player Patrick Ianni. Brad Evans buried the spot

kick for a 2‐0 Seattle lead. Houston’s best chance came on 17 minutes, as Brian Ching deftly laid off a pass to Will

Bruin at the top of the Seattle box. Bruin produced a first‐touch left‐footed volley that required Seattle keeper

Michael Gspurning to parry it over the crossbar.

Houston vs. Chicago: The Dynamo have enjoyed success against the Fire over the years, compiling a 6‐3‐3 record

against the original MLS club. Houston has played especially well at Toyota Park, going 3‐1‐2 at the home of the

Fire, including three consecutive away wins from 2007‐09. The teams drew 1‐1 in both meetings in 2011. Bobby

Boswell headed home a Brad Davis corner kick for an 83rd‐minute equalizer in the first meeting, April 23 at

Toyota Park. In the Oct. 1 encounter at Robertson Stadium, Colin Clark gave Houston a lead on 33 minutes before

former Dynamo forward Dominic Oduro equalized ten minutes later. On 8/21/10 Brian Ching recorded a hat

trick against the Fire at Robertson Stadium, the second of his career.

DYNAMO NOTES Key Players Out: Houston will likely be without the services of three starting midfielders. 2011 MLS MVP

runner‐up Brad Davis is likely out with a left calf strain. Adam Moffat is serving a one‐game suspension for

a “for a reckless challenge which endangered the safety of his opponent” in the Seattle game. Colin Clark

will serve the first game of his three‐game suspension for “using unacceptable and offensive language

toward a ball boy” in the Seattle game.

Davis played in every MLS regular season game in 2011 for the first time in his career before suffering a

quad injury in the Eastern Conference final at Sporting Kansas City. After offseason surgery, Davis was back

to full health and played 90 minutes in Houston’s first three games before the calf injury.

Page 26: Dynamo vs. Fire game notes

Davis is in danger of breaking a streak of 45 consecutive regular season games started. The last time Davis

did not start a regular season game was 8/28/10 at Colorado. Tally Hall is next for Houston with 37

consecutive regular season starts.

Reserves: The Dynamo Reserves defeated FC Dallas Reserves 1‐0 on Tuesday at FC Dallas Stadium to remain perfect at 3‐0‐0 in Reserve League Play. Forward Cam Weaver produced his second game‐winner in

a row, burying his second Reserve League goal off a pass from Colin Rolfe. It was the third shutout for the

Reserves, with Tyler Deric in goal for each.

Dynamo sign Oscar Recio: The Dynamo signed Mexican defender Oscar Recio on loan from Mexican first

division club C.F. Monterrey on Friday, April 13. Recio joined the Dynamo at the beginning of preseason

and has seen significant minutes in both preseason and reserve matches. The left back has played all 270

minutes of reserve league action in 2012 and has helped anchor a defense that has posted three shutouts in

three matches. Before joining the Dynamo, the 22‐year‐old defender spent time with CF Monterrey, Merida

FC, Atlante FC and most recently Club de Fútbol Indios.

Houston’s 2‐0 loss at Seattle ended a four‐game road winning streak (regular season), in which all wins included a clean sheet. Including playoffs, the Dynamo have won 6 of 8 on the road, with the 1‐0 loss to LA

Galaxy in MLS Cup the only other defeat.

The Dynamo are (6‐1‐2) in their last nine regular season games. Before the loss at Seattle, Houston’s last

defeat was a 2‐0 setback at Sporting Kansas City on Sept. 10, 2011.

First Road Win of 2012: Houston’s 1‐0 win over Chivas USA erased bad memories of the 2011 road

schedule. Amazingly, it took Houston 16 games to record its first road win of the 2011 campaign. After a 0‐

6‐9 start, the Dynamo defeated FC Dallas 1‐0 at Pizza Hut Park on September 24 on Geoff Cameron’s goal in

the 87th minute. The win started a road‐roll for the Dynamo, which won its final two games (at Portland and

Philadelphia) of the regular season before winning two road playoff games (Philadelphia and Sporting KC).

That stretch included a 7‐1 record against Western Conference teams. Houston went 9‐6‐4 in 2011 against its

former conference.

Andre Hainault is enjoying a goal‐scoring streak that defies logic given his scoring record. Hainault scored 3 goals in the first 88 games of his Dynamo career (all competitions). With his winner at Chivas USA on

March 11, the Montreal‐native has scored 4 goals in his last 9 games (10/14/11 @ Portland, 10/30/11 @

Philadelphia, 11/6/11 @ Sporting Kansas City, and March 11 @ Chivas.)

Clean Sheets: The Dynamo have earned four clean sheets in their last six games, playoffs included (11/3/11,

1‐0 vs. PHI; 11/6/11, 2‐0 @ SKC; 3/11/12, 1‐0 @ CHV, and 3/17/12, 1‐0 @ SJ).

Well‐traveled Jamaicans: Midfielder Je‐Vaughn Watson and defender Jermaine Taylor had a chance to

settle in for the three‐week break after plenty of time in the air. The Jamaica internationals played three

games in seven days in three different locations in March, including 3/17 at San Jose, 3/21 vs. Costa Rica in

Kingston, Jamaica and 3/23 in Seattle.  The pair also played in two friendlies for Jamaica in February while

the Dynamo participated in the Disney Pro Soccer Classic in Orlando.

Page 27: Dynamo vs. Fire game notes

First: Houston recorded its first‐ever opening day win on the road on March 11 at Chivas USA. It was also

the Dynamo’s first season‐opening win since 2006 (home or road). More details in chart below.

Clutch: Hainault’s game‐winner two minutes into stoppage time at Chivas USA continued a run of late

goals for Houston in 2011. Last year, the Dynamo scored 14 goals in the final 15 minutes of games, second

best in MLS (Seattle).

Late Winners: Hainault’s goal at Chivas USA was the first Dynamo goal in extra time since Alex Dixon
