MLS GAME INFORMATION

SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC vs HOUSTON DYNAMO CENTURYLINK FIELD, Seattle, Wash.

March 23, 2012 (WEEK 3, MLS Game #18) 7 p.m. PT (NBC SN)

A pair of clubs that developed a fierce rivalry in the Western Conference meet for the only time this season when Seattle Sounders FC and the Houston Dynamo put their undefeated records on the line Friday night at CenturyLink Field. Sounders FC got their 2012 season off to a quality start with a 3-1 win against Toronto FC last weekend. The Dynamo have started their long road swing with two 1-0 wins on the trot, last weekend defeating San Jose. REFEREE: Baldomero Toledo. This is the only league meeting between the teams this season. Sounders FC have never lost to the Dynamo in their CenturyLink Field home. Seattle has won two of the three

league games (with one draw); the teams also played to a draw in Seattle in the 2009 Western Conference Semifinals.

In nine all-time meetings, including the two games in the MLS Cup Playoffs and a U.S. Open Cup semifinal, the road team has never taken the full points.

Coaches record: Sigi Schmid vs. HOU: P12 W3 L4 D5 … Dominic Kinnear vs. SEA: P6 W2 L2 D2 SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC Seattle Sounders FC started off their 2012 MLS season with a bang, getting a hat trick from David Estrada on their way to a 3-1 win against Toronto FC on Saturday evening at CenturyLink Field. LAST MATCH

Sounders FC scored their first goal of the MLS season in the 17th minute. After Alvaro Fernández sent in a teasing cross from the left, David Estrada was the quickest to react, digging the ball out of a scrum and eventually punching it home.

Seattle and Estrada hit for a second six minutes after the break. Played in behind the TFC backline by Marc Burch, Estrada raced into the area unmolested and curled it past goalkeeper Milos Kocic.

Ryan Johnson halved the lead in the 62nd minute, setting off from near the midfield stripe before cutting square across the top of the box and hitting a stunning strike into the far corner of the goal.

But Estrada soon restored the margin for his hat trick. He played a quick one-two with Fernández in the area, lashing home a right-footed shot inside the near post.

With Eddie Johnson out through injury, Estrada was given the starting spot in attack alongside Fredy Montero. Michael Gspurning made his MLS debut, replacing the retired Kasey Keller.

SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC (4-4-2): Michael Gspurning - Adam Johansson, Patrick Ianni, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, Marc Burch - Mauro Rosales (Roger Levesque 79), Brad Evans, Osvaldo Alonso, Alvaro Fernandez (Christian Sivebaek 65) - David Estrada (Servando Carrasco 87), Fredy Montero.

TEAM NEWS Making his third MLS start, and his seventh league appearance, in his third MLS season, Estrada was named

MLS Player of the Week after his hat trick. Estrada has scored four of Sounders FC’s five goals in competitive matches this season.

“Something that we haven't had in the past is that runner that's up top and that's good at getting behind the defense and can just wreak havoc. When you have that it disorganizes the other defense,” said Brad Evans.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

“Instead of playing in front of them all the time we have somebody that can stretch and bring players out. He found himself in good positions this game and finished three really good goals."

But a down side after the match was losing Mauro Rosales to a knee injury that forced him off in the 79th minute. “It could be a couple weeks; it could be a little more. We’ll have to see how it goes the next few days,” said Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid.

Rosales recorded 13 assists, to go with 5 goals, in 26 league appearances in 2011. "You don't want to lose players at any time and certainly he's a very important player to us because of the

creative impulses he gives to the game,” said Schmid. “We're going to miss that part of it and it puts a little more of a burden on the other guys.”

With Rosales out, Schmid will face a few decisions. Marc Burch, who started at left back vs. Toronto FC, could move forward into the midfield, or Christian Sivebaek or Roger Levesque (both of whom came on as substitutes in the TFC match) could slot into the position. Alvaro Fernández – who played a part in all three Seattle goals – would switch flanks, and Leo Gonzalez could start at left back.

“We had that situation a game or two last year and the team responded well and we won some important games without him,” Fernandez said. “We just hope we can make that happen this year as well.”

HOUSTON DYNAMO The Houston Dynamo made it two wins on the trot on their seven-game road swing to kick off the 2012 season, winning 1-0 for a second successive week, against the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday afternoon at AT&T Park in San Francisco. The Dynamo are tied with Sporting KC atop the Eastern Conference as the only clubs with maximum points from two games. LAST MATCH

The Dynamo took the lead after 14 minutes. Brian Ching raced into the area to run onto an Adam Moffat through ball, and when he was clattered into by goalkeeper Jon Busch, referee Chris Penso pointed to the post.

Brad Davis pulled the resulting penalty to his right, placing it in the side netting past Busch, who guessed correctly but still couldn’t deflect the shot.

Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear made one change to the team that defeated Chivas USA 1-0 in the season opener. Jermaine Taylor came in at left back for the injured Corey Ashe.

HOUSTON DYNAMO (4-4-2): Tally Hall - Andre Hainault, Geoff Cameron, Bobby Boswell, Jermaine Taylor - Colin Clark (Nathan Sturgis 82), Adam Moffat, Je-Vaughn Watson, Brad Davis - Will Bruin (Calen Carr 67), Brian Ching (Cam Weaver 67).

TEAM NEWS Of the five MLS teams that have started the season with extended road swings (Columbus, 1999; LA, 2003;

Chicago, 2006; Sporting KC, 2011), the Dynamo are the first to not only record shutouts, but also win the first two games on the trip. The Dynamo will play their first seven games on the road while awaiting completion of BBVA Compass Stadium in downtown Houston.

In his first season as the first-choice goalkeeper in 2011, Tally Hall recorded six shutouts in starting every league match along the way.

“We asked him before the game to be a big body for us and come out and catch some balls and take pressure off the defense,” Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear said. “As the game wore on, he was becoming a better, imposing goalkeeper for us. He made one real good save on Chris Wondolowski and I thought he grew in confidence and effectiveness as the game went on.”

After suffering a hamstring strain in the season-opening win vs. Chivas USA, left back Corey Ashe missed out on the win vs. San Jose. Ashe said he expects to be fully available this week.

“I didn’t want to do anymore damage to it, so I figured I’d sit out,” Ashe said about the decision to hold off on a return this past weekend. “I’ll be fine, ready for the game [Friday].”

In Ashe’s place, Jamaican international Jermaine Taylor slotted into the left back spot. “I thought he did OK,” Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear said. “We asked Jermaine to play left back and thought he had some very good moments for us.”

Taylor and midfielder Je-Vaughn Watson – both of whom played the full 90 minutes – joined the Jamaican national team for a friendly Wednesday vs. Costa Rica in Kingston. "We'd like to keep the same 11, but you never know. It's going to be a quick turnaround. Guys got a lot of travel," said Kinnear.

The Dynamo have won both matches by 1-0 scorelines – matching their record of all of last year. "We've had our chances," Will Bruin said to the Houston Chronicle. "We've been creating them, but right now

they haven't gone in. We've been managing to get the wins, which is huge (to have) two wins on the road while creating chances and not being able to get them in."

Seattle Sounders FC vs. Houston dynamo | Friday, March 23, 2012 - 7:00 p.m. Pt

SoundErS FC vS. HouSton dynAMo

Fueled by the surging David estrada, sounders FC kicked off

the 2012 Major league soccer season on a high note last

saturday night with a 3-1 victory over Toronto FC.

seattle (1-0-0) will continue a three-game home stand tonight

when Mls Cup runners-up Houston Dynamo (2-0-0) visit the Xbox

pitch at Centurylink Field. Houston beat two West teams away

from home this season and sit atop the early east standings. The

stingy Houston defense is yet to concede a goal this season and

the potent seattle attack is poised to crack through.

seattle and Houston are level at 2-2-2 all-time with each side

netting eight goals. neither team has won on the road as sounders

FC is unbeaten at home with two wins and a draw in three

meetings. Five of seattle’s eight goals have come in the final 45

minutes while Houston scores early with six of their eight tallies

coming in the opening half. seattle has outshot their Houston

counterparts 63-55 (38-20 on goal).

Fredy Montero and alvaro Fernandez have each scored twice

against Houston while Geoff Cameron leads all players with three

goals in the series. Dynamo forward Brian Ching is the only player

with a multi-goal game.

seattle looks to continue to establish Centurylink Field as one

of the league’s toughest places to play. The club went 9-4-4 at

home in 2011 (25-10-12 overall) and, with the victory in the first

leg of the ConCaCaF Champions league quarters, seattle has

won both home games this season, scoring five goals in 180

minutes of action.

seattle supporters will get their sounders FC soccer fix as

seven of the next 12 matches will be played in the emerald City.

The opening home stay concludes next saturday, March 31

against the san Jose earthquakes.

Houston features several personalities with northwest ties,

including two former a-league/Usl-1 sounders. Forward Cam

Weaver was the sounders' top scorer in 2005 as a rookie out of

seattle University. Weaver had helped the redhawks win the

nCaa Division ii championship in 2004. Forward Brian Ching

starred at Gonzaga and made the all-league team with the

sounders in 2002. Goalkeeper Tally Hall is a native of Gig Harbor,

Washington. Dominic kinnear, the Dynamo head coach, played

for the sounders' 1995 a-league championship team.

patrick ianni of sounders FC came north from Houston during

the 2009 offseason. ianni was obtained in a January 26 trade for

a conditional pick in the 2010 superDraft. ianni spent his first three

pro seasons wearing orange, making 35 league appearances for

the Dynamo from 2006-08. He scored the game-winner on a

second-half overhead kick in a 2-1 seattle home win on July 11,

2009.

The core of leaders returns to sounders FC for the 2012

season. striker Fredy Montero is joined in the attack by 2011 Mls

newcomer of the Year Mauro rosales, alvaro Fernandez and,

eventually, winger steve Zakuani. The backline is shored up by

Jeff parke and Jhon kennedy Hurtado in the middle with leo

Gonzalez returning to the left. The ever-active central midfield of

osvaldo alonso and Brad evans rounds out the group of returning

starters.

a group of newcomers have also joined the club, most notably

the six-foot-five austrian goalkeeper Michael Gspurning, swedish

right back adam Johansson and Danish midfielder Christian

sivebaek. The rave Green also added a goalscorer in U.s.

international eddie Johnson. and, as in years past, seattle also

has depth. The emergence of David estrada has created more

competition for minutes at forward, particularly with teammates

sammy ochoa and Babayele sodade.

The hat trick hero may garner most of the attention, but David

estrada knows he is in debt to midfielder alvaro Fernandez for

great set-up play. Fernandez was involved in all three goals,

recording two assists for the first time in his Mls career. The

creative Uruguayan showed his skill on the first goal as he beat

his defender with a tricky back heel move and centered a low cross

that estrada finished past a crowd in the box. Fernandez began

the second scoring play with a ball to Marc Burch and worked a

neat one-two in the box to help estrada complete his hat trick in

the 63rd minute. Fernandez had previously recorded just one as-

sist in league play over his first two seasons.

an opportunity. estrada took full advantage and scored a UCla

years, estrada has not played up top since his freshman year. in

David estrada scored his first three Mls goals as sounders

FC beat Toronto FC, 3-1, in seattle's league opener in front of a

record crowd of 38,709 on the Xbox pitch at Centurylink Field.

estrada became the third player in Mls history to score a hat

trick in the club's opening game of the Mls season. His three-goal

effort was the third hat trick in club history and first in Mls this

season. Midfielder alvaro Fernandez was involved in all three

scores, recording two assists.

estrada put seattle ahead early with a goal in the 17th minute.

alvaro Fernandez cut across his defender after beating him down

the left flank, allowing the Uruguayan to center a cross. The ball

deflected off a Toronto FC defender and, after a scramble in the

box, estrada poked the ball past goalkeeper Mils kocic for the

game's first goal.

estrada and Fernandez combined again for the second goal

in the 51st minute. Defender Marc Burch, who made his Mls

debut for the club, led estrada up the left side and the third-year

striker finished into the far side of the net.

The assist marked Burch's first for the club and first since

March 19, 2011, versus Columbus Crew.

estrada completed the hat trick just moments after Toronto's

lone goal. after weaving through the reds' defender on the left

flank, he played a give-and-go with Fernandez and finished past

kocic.

estrada has now scored four goals in his first two home starts,

including the first tally against santos laguna on March 7. He has

scored four of seattle's six goals in all competitions this season.

Fernandez recorded two assists for the first time in his Mls

career.

estrada's hat trick was the third in club history, including lamar

neagle versus the Columbux Crew (8/27/2011) and Blaise nkufo

at Columbus (9/18/2010)

ryan Johnson scored for Toronto in the 62nd minute on an

impressive strike from 20-yards out. Johnson dribbled up the right

side, cut toward the middle and rocketed a shot to the far upper

corner.

Johnson had several scoring opportunities throughout the

match, most notably a headed attempt that hit the crossbar in the

28th minute.

estrada nearly added to his total with two other strong

chances. in the 23rd minute he got behind the Toronto backline

and ran onto a loose ball but defender Torsten Frings was able to

make a sliding tackle from behind to force a corner kick. Five min-

utes later, estrada made a long run and had a one-on-one oppor-

tunity with the keeper but kocic made the save.

Toronto's Frings left the game with a hamstring injury in the

23rd minute.

The win marks the first for sounders FC goalkeeper Michael

Gspurning, making two saves on the night. Gspurning punched

Johnson's header over the crossbar in the 53rd minute and denied

Danny koevermans in the 71st minute.

along with Gspurning, Danish midfielder Christian sivebaek

made his Mls debut, entering for Fernandez in the 65th minute.

sivebaek served a cross to roger levesque in the 85th minute

but levesque's shot was saved by a diving kocic.

DYNAMO VS. SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC – HOUSTON TRIES FOR THIRD STRAIGHT ROAD WIN The Houston Dynamo and Seattle Sounders meet at CenturyLink Field on Friday night as The Orange

continue its seven‐game season‐opening road trip. The Dynamo are off to their best start in club history

after sweeping California with a pair of wins in their first two road games – 1‐0 victories over Chivas USA

and San Jose Earthquakes, respectively. Saturday’s triumph over San Jose at AT&T Park was earned through

a 14th‐minute penalty goal from Brad Davis after Brian Ching was taken down in the box by Quakes

goalkeeper Jon Busch. With the win, Houston matched its win total from 2011 (two). After going 15 games

on the road without a win to start 2011 (0‐6‐9), the Dynamo have won four consecutive regular season road

games beginning with a 1‐0 win at FC Dallas on 9/24/11. All four road wins have included a clean sheet for

the visitors. Seattle has had a busy start to 2012, first being knocked out of CONCACAF Champions League

by Santos before securing a 3‐1 MLS season‐opening win over Toronto FC behind David Estrada’s hat trick,

the third‐ever in club history, in front of a home‐opening‐record 38,709 supporters. Since the Sounders

joined MLS in 2009, Houston and Seattle have been even on the pitch, with each club winning two

matches, along with two draws, in six regular season meetings (each club has 8 GF and 8 GA as well).

Houston and Seattle drew 1‐1 at Qwest Field on March 25, 2011, with Geoff Cameron giving Houston a 42nd‐

minute lead before Steve Zakuani equalized in the 80th. Seattle rode a nine‐match MLS unbeaten streak into

Robertson Stadium on July 30, 2011 before the Dynamo earned a 3‐1 win behind a Ching brace (23’, 71’) and

Colin Clark goal (7’). Alvaro Fernandez provided a penalty goal on 36 minutes for Seattle. In their lone

postseason encounter, the Dynamo ousted the Sounders 1‐0 in extra‐time at Robertson Stadium on Nov. 8,

2009 on Brian Ching’s volley winner.

DYNAMO NOTES Houston has won four straight regular season road games, all via clean sheet. Including playoffs, the

Dynamo have won 6 of 7 on the road, with the 1‐0 loss to LA Galaxy in MLS Cup the only road defeat.

The Dynamo are the only Eastern Conference team to record a win over a Western Conference side.

Outside of Houston’s 2‐0 record versus the West, the East is 0‐9 in matches against the West. The West has

enjoyed a home‐field advantage, though, with 10 of the 11 inter‐conference matches hosted by the West.

Page 38: Dynamo vs. Seattle game notes

The Dynamo are unbeaten in their last 8 regular season games (6‐0‐2). Houston’s last defeat was a 2‐0 setback at

Sporting Kansas City on Sept. 10, 2011.

If the Dynamo win in Seattle on Friday, they will match a franchise record with three consecutive road wins

within one season. In 2007, Houston won three straight road games – at Los Angeles Galaxy, 3‐1, on 9/17/11; at FC

Dallas, 3‐0, on 9/30; and at Real Salt Lake, 1‐0, on 10/15 – over the span of four overall games. The Dynamo earned

a 1‐0 draw at Chivas USA in the season finale to finish the year unbeaten in their final four road games.

First Road Win of 2012: Houston’s 1‐0 win over Chivas USA erased bad memories of the 2011 road schedule.

Amazingly, it took Houston 16 games to record its first road win of the 2011 campaign. After a 0‐6‐9 start, the

Dynamo defeated FC Dallas 1‐0 at Pizza Hut Park on September 24 on Geoff Cameron’s goal in the 87th minute.

The win started a road‐roll for the Dynamo, which won its final two games (at Portland and Philadelphia) of the

regular season before winning two road playoff games (Philadelphia and Sporting KC). That stretch included a

7‐1 record against Western Conference teams. Houston went 9‐6‐4 in 2011 against its former conference.

Andre Hainault is enjoying a goal‐scoring streak that defies logic given his scoring record. Hainault scored 3 goals in the first 88 games of his Dynamo career (all competitions). With his winner at Chivas USA on

March 11, the Montreal‐native has scored 4 goals in his last 8 games (10/14/11 @ Portland, 10/30/11 @

Philadelphia, 11/6/11 @ Sporting Kansas City, and March 11 @ Chivas.)

Clean Sheets: The Dynamo have earned four clean sheets in their last five games, playoffs included (11/3/11,

1‐0 vs. PHI; 11/6/11, 2‐0 @ SKC; 3/11/12, 1‐0 @ CHV, and 3/17/12, 1‐0 @ SJ).

More Clean Sheets: If the Dynamo shutout Seattle on Friday, it would mark the first time they record three

consecutive shutouts since 5/30‐6/10/09, when they earned three wins versus Toronto, Chicago and Chivas

USA.

Scoreless Streak: The Dynamo have a long way to go to approach their club and MLS record for minutes

without allowing a goal. The 2007 championship club set a MLS record by playing 727 minutes without

allowing a goal. The streak started on 6/10/07 in a 2‐1 win vs. Columbus and included eight shutouts before

the streak ended in a 3‐3 draw with New England on 7/22/11. Pat Onstad was in goal for 524 of the minutes,

with Zach Wells keeping the streak alive with 180 minutes in net.

Jamaican friendly: Midfielder Je‐Vaughn Watson and defender Jermaine Taylor joined the Jamaica

national team for its Wednesday friendly with Costa Rica. They were scheduled to rejoin the Dynamo in

Seattle on Thursday.

First: Houston recorded its first‐ever opening day win on the road on March 11 at Chivas USA. It was also

the Dynamo’s first season‐opening win since 2006 (home or road). More details in chart below.

Clutch: Hainault’s game‐winner two minutes into stoppage time at Chivas USA continued a run of late

goals for Houston in 2011. Last year, the Dynamo scored 14 goals in the final 15 minutes of games, second

best in MLS (Seattle).

Page 39: Dynamo vs. Seattle game notes

Late Winners: Hainault’s goal was the first Dynamo goal in extra time since Alex Dixon earned a vital 3‐2 win over Real Salt Lake at Robertson Stadium on Aug. 20, 2011. Three days earlier, Bobby Boswell earned a

1‐1 tie at New England with a 90th‐minute equalizer.

Reserves: The Dynamo Reserves defeated Colorado Rapids 1‐0 on March 13 at Houston Amateur Sports

Park. Houston’s chances were limited, but in the 80th minute rookie Brian Ownby pounced onto the

rebound of Jermaine Taylor’s shot and buried it for a 1‐0 win. Tyler Deric earned the shutout in goal.

Sarkodie Call‐Up: Dynamo defender Kofi Sarkodie was named to the final roster for the CONCACAF

Men’s Olympic Qualifying tournament, which began on Thursday. Sarkodie was called into the U.S. men’s

training camp that began March 13 in Nashville.

Offseason additions: The Dynamo’s offseason consisted mostly of moves to add depth to a core of returning

starters. Houston acquired three players via draft (F‐Colin Rolfe, D‐Warren Creavalle and M‐Brian

Ownby), three via trade (D/M‐Nathan Sturgis, F‐Macoumba Kandji and F‐Brian Ching), and one trialist

signing (GK‐Erich Marscheider).

Preseason: Forward Will Bruin led the Dynamo offense in the preseason with four goals, including the club’s lone

goal in four matches in the Disney Pro Soccer Classic in Orlando, a header goal versus Montreal. Brian Ownby (3)

Colin Clark (2), Colin Rolfe (2) Nathan Sturgis (2) rounded out the Dynamo scoring leaders.

With construction continuing at BBVA Compass Stadium, the Dynamo’s new downtown facility, the club is

forced to begin its season with seven games on the road. After road games with Chivas USA, San Jose, Seattle,

Chicago, Columbus, DC United and New York, Houston opens its new stadium against DC United on May 12.

Nearly six years after the club’s first‐ever match on April 2, 2006, only two players remain on the Dynamo roster:

Brian Ching and Brad Davis. Defender Eddie Robinson retired in January and joined the front office as an

assistant coach with the Youth Academy and a color analyst on TV broadcasts.

UP NEXT: LONG BREAK BEFORE TAX DAY VISIT TO CHICAGO Friday’s match with Seattle will end Houston’s three‐game West Coast road swing and signal the near mid‐point

of its seven‐game road trip. The Dynamo will enjoy a two‐weekend break (22 days between games‐ longest gap

of season) before resuming MLS play on April 15 at Chicago, marking their first game with an Eastern Conference

foe in 2012. Houston will continue to see Eastern Conference competition, with trips to Columbus (4/21), DC

United (4/28) and New York (5/9) before the May 12 opening of BBVA Compass Stadium.
