PLANNING & DESIGN TEAM PROJECTS

YEAR 2013

SAGII Phase 1-Permeable Pavers: Project provides stormwater detention with permeable pavers on selected streets within Peoplestown, Mechanicsville and Summerhill communities. In-house 30% level design, CAD & survey was provided for the Zone 2 Summerhill area. The remaining Zones 1 & 3 were designed by A/E and managed by the design staff.

SAGII Phase 2A-Media Lot Vault: Project includes a 5 MG combined sewer storage vault to manage peak flow rates of the combined sewers flowing to Peoplestown, draining much of the adjacent Federal Highway. The 30% level Design and Design/Build Contract were managed in-house.

SAGII Phase 2B-Connally Vault: Project includes preliminary plans for a combined sewer storage vault to manage peak flow rates in the combined sewers flowing to the Peoplestown area. Project work includes coordinating with Atlanta Public Schools in identifying potential sites for the vault, modeling support and A/E contract management.

Georgia Power and Civic Center Vault: Project includes an 11 MG and 4 MG combined sewer stor-age vaults to manage peak flow rates of the combined sewers flowing into the Butler Street Trunk and Relief Lines in the vicinity of the Georgia Power, Civic Center draining much of the adjacent Federal Highway I-75 and I-85 Downtown Intersection and Civic Center. The 30% level in-house design will be for a future design/build contract.

Red Team Spill Group: Project includes a task order from commissioner to develop a CMSS (Computer Management System & Solution) to help link the City’s various Groups: Spills, Monitoring, Modeling, GIS, Grease, Public Information and Rehab, to CMSS dashboard with Hansen Software for better management and reduction of spills (combined and non-combined) that is occurring on continu-ous basis.

Model Building for South River/Intrenchment WRC: Working with BGR (Consultant to the City) to build two models in Infoworks CS for the Intrenchment Creek WRC and South River WRC. These dy-namic models will connect and merge with the corresponding calibrated sanitary and combined sewer basins in order to study the hydraulic behavior under existing and proposed design storms.

Multi-Modal Transportation Conceptual Design: Work with GA DOT and Consultant to provide pipe net-work in the proposed transportation hub between Five Points MARTA station and CNN, Phipps Plaza. To also study the impact on the combined sewer system for the North Avenue combined basin.

Fort McPherson Re-development Project: Project includes a re-development of the decommissioned Army Base, which includes propose water, storm and sewer network, and study of the impact on the downstream sanitary sewer in the Utoy Creek basin from the proposed loading and the available capacities

Ridgewood Sewer Improvements: Multiple in-house designs and permitting support for a project to improve the reliability of existing 42 inch and 24 inch sewers, stabilize the slope holding the sewers, and coordination with an A/E designing stream bank restoration of the adjacent Peachtree Creek.

Carroll Street Stormwater Improvements: In-house design for stormwater drainage improvements at Car-roll St and Boulevard Ave to alleviate historical flooding.

RDA Phase 1 & 2 Stormwater Improvements: In-house design of stormwater improvements to a section of RDA between Culbertson and Peeples St.to alleviate flooding.

Whittier Mills Sewer Improvements: In-house design of a new sewer system to replace an existing COA grapevine system.

Migration from InfoWorks CS to ICM: Project includes setting up and running new modeling software ca-pable of performing faster analysis of stormwater overland flows in addition to infiltration and inflow modeling of sanitary sewer and combined sewer systems. Lead members were involved in setting up the hardware architecture and directing the system protocol. Members also participated in the training on the new soft-ware.

Capacity Re-Certification Models: Project includes updating, validating or recalibrating existing sanitary and combined sewer basin models based on up to date flow monitoring data and completed CIP projects.

Downtown Water Storage Tank Modeling and Re-Pumping Station: Project includes modeling of water system for estimating the size & identifying possible locations of the tanks, and their impact on the system keeping the current and future water demand consideration of the service area. The project consists of two water storage tanks and repumping stations. It will involve in-house 30% level design for a Design/Build Contract.

Flare Pressure Troubleshooting: Model digester gas system in design flow solutions to try to locate prob-lem preventing gas from reaching flares.

Various Department of Transportation Projects: City of Atlanta utilities verification and/or relocation, de-pending on GDOT's scope of work.

Edgewood Avenue Sanitary Sewer Realignment: The City of Atlanta Department of Public Works and Atlanta Beltline, Inc. have sponsored a project to replace the existing bridge on Edgewood Avenue between Airline Boulevard and Krog Street. The pipes and manhole structures of the existing sanitary sewer system were in conflict with the locations of the proposed bridge abutment and pile locations. The Department of Watershed Management designed and installed 452 feet of 24” Ductile Iron pipe for the new sanitary sewer alignment relocation project. The project went under existing duct banks and other obstructions and was installed at depths from 15 to 30 feet. Approximately, 154 feet of 24 inch RCP was also designed and in-stalled to replace an existing storm sewer that was also discovered while the sanitary sewer system was be-ing installed.

931 Monroe Drive, Storm Drainage Improvements: The purpose of this project was to minimize ponding problems at 931 Monroe Drive in front of an existing Marta Bus Stop Shelter. The project included the de-sign and installation of a double grate inlet and approximately 14 feet of 18 inch of Reinforced concrete pipe to solve the ponding issue.

Niskey Lake Culvert and Road Improvements: In-house design to assist Department of Public Works with three culverts and associated road improvements at Niskey Lake Road and Niskey Lake Trail.

1067 Cascade Road Stormwater Improvements: In-house design to assist Department of Public Works with stormwater improvements to a section of Cascade Road between Eastridge Road and Belmonte Drive to alleviate stormwater flooding.

Barge Road Stormwater and Road Improvements: In-house design and cost analysis to assist Depart-ment of Public Works with stormwater drainage improvements and road improvements at Barge Road near Greenbrier Parkway to alleviate flooding.

Barnett Street Stormwater and Drainage Report: In-house analysis of stormwater impact to areas adja-cent to Barnett Street at Bolton Road and associated creek.

Hemphill Reservoir #1 Embankment Repair: Finalization of plans to add a few feet of fill to the existing reservoir dam, to install a siphon and drainage piping to allow drainage of reservoir, and to install monitoring wells within the dam.

South Downtown Waterline Improvements: In-house design of waterline improvements on sections of Piedmont Road, Washington Street and Fairlie Street to improve distribution system redundancy and reliabil-ity.

Water Distribution System Improvement: In- house design of water main improvement thru out the City of Atlanta. It is divided into four quadrants (north, south, east and west).

Hartsfield International Airport Pump Station Improvement: In house design to replace several valves at the Airport pumping station.

Utoy Creek Access Road Culvert Replacement: The purpose of this project is to replace an existing cul-vert for access road to Utoy Creek. Currently the existing culvert has been washed out and to allow for con-tinuous use of the existing access road, 24 linear feet of 24” Dia. RCP will be installed. The existing access road will have to be raised a few feet for the installation of the pipe culvert, and 8 inches of crushed aggre-gate will be placed as the top layer of the access road for the entire length of the improvement.

Sandy Creek Phase I: Project provided capacity relief to reduce potential sewer overflows in the Proctor Creek sewer service area in West Atlanta. Project consists of replacing and upgrading existing 2060 LF of 30 Inch and 360 LF of 8 Inch pipes and manholes with upsized pipes, and aerial crossing on piers.

Sandy Creek Phase II: Project provided capacity relief to reduce potential sewer overflows in the Proctor Creek sewer service area in West Atlanta. Project consists of replacing and upgrading existing sewer pipe with 1040 LF of 30 inch and 360 LF of 8 inch sewers, including two creek crossings and a gas line crossing.

West Wesley Sewer Extension: Site Investigation and design of 325 linear feet of 8” sanitary sewer line extension to provide services for the property owners who are currently using septic tanks on West Wesley Road.

132 East Lake Drive SE Sanitary Sewer Evaluation: Sanitary sewer pipes capacity evaluation for sewer realignment and size increase.

East Point Sewer South River Basin Construction Phase: The project was at construction phase in 2013. This is a consent decree order project. The project is limited to East Point Trunk, South Camp Hapeville and South River Outfall Replacement Sewers. The entire sewerline is to be upsized to alleviate the current hy-draulically overloaded condition and to accommodate future sanitary flow requirements. The project limits include 15,000 linear feet of pipeline with sizes from 18” to 42” Diameter of which 1,300 linear feet were in-stalled utilizing trenchless technologies. It impacts 320 linear feet of perennial stream, 150 linear feet of in-termittent stream and 350 linear feet of ephemeral stream. The contractor encroach 18 different areas of stream along the project corridor. The design group is involved in the followings: 1. Alignment change, re-view & approval, 2. Review and approval of pay request, 3. Processing of State and Federal agencies permit application (USACE, GDOT, GDNR, GA EPD), 4. Tree planting approval updating and 5. Co-supervision of tunneling and Jack & Bore construction.

South Replacement South River Basin Construction Phase: The project was at construction phase in 2013. This is a consent decree order project. It is for the upsizing and replacement of various trunk and out-fall sewers within South River Basin including Jonesboro Trunk, and Trunk Relief, and Forest Park Outfall. The design group is involved in the followings: 1. Alignment change, review & approval, 2. Review and ap-proval of pay request, 3. Tree planting approval updating and 4. Co-supervision of tunneling and Jack & Bore construction.

North Replacement South River Basin Construction Phase: The project was at construction phase in 2013. This is consent decree order project. The project includes McDaniel Trunk Replacement, and lower Tenth Ward Trunk partial replacement and Lakewood Outfall upgrades including flow transfer and negative slope correction. The design group is involved in the followings: 1. Review and approval of pay request, 2. Tree planting approval updating, 3. Processing of State and Federal agencies permit application (USACE, GDOT, GDNR, GA EPD) and 4. Co-supervision of tunneling and Jack & Bore construction.

342 Henry Aaron Avenue S.W. Storm Water Analysis: In-house hydrology analysis of stormwater impact to areas and storm pipes adjacent to Henry Aaron Avenue SW and associated creek.

Adams Drive Bridge Replacement with Culvert: Plans prepared to replace the existing bridge with cul-verts. Hydraulics study was required to size the culverts.

181 Burbank Dr. SW Drainage Improvement: Plans prepared for Culvert Replacement at 181 Burbank Drive Structural design was included in order to modify the GA DOT 1125 std. detail. Hydrology and hydrau-lic analysis were performed to size the structure.

City of Atlanta Street Car Project: The project is a comprehensive, regional modern streetcar and light rail transit system. It is approximately 2.7 tract miles that will operate with vehicular traffic, 12 stations and 4 ve-hicles. It will have direct transfer to Marta Rail service at Peachtree Center rail station. The streetcar will travel along Jackson Street, Auburn Avenue, Park Place, Luckie Street, Edgewood Avenue, Peachtree Street, Ellis Street, Carnegie Way, Andrew Young International Boulevard and Centennial Olympic Park Drive. In-house 30% level designs of sewer, storm & water lines were completed. This project is ongoing and should be completed by next year.

Peachtree Liddell Drive Equalization Facility: The project addresses overflows in the Peachtree Creek sewers. A 10-million-gallon sewer storage tank will be constructed near Liddell Drive to capture sewer over-flows. Once the flow decreases in the sewers, water stored in the tank will be discharged back to the sewage collection system at a controlled rate.

876 Ormewood Avenue: Hydraulics study was required to determine number of drop inlet required to be installed to protect neighborhood from flooding of rain events. Hydrology and hydraulic analysis was per-formed to size the structure.

Ormewood Avenue / Flat Shoals Road: Plan and profile for extension of 225 linear feet of 36” reinforced concrete storm sewer system is prepared for the Department of Public Works.

Bernice Street Water Distribution System Improvement: Plan prepared for extension of approximately 600 linear feet of 8 inch water main.

Back Flow Compliance Program: In accordance with the Safe Water Drinking Act and the requirements of the Georgia State Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division, the Georgia State Plumbing Code, the City of Atlanta Code of Ordinances and the City of Atlanta Bureau of Drinking Water has established policies and procedures for the protection of the Atlanta potable water supply system through a “Cross-Connection and Backflow Prevention Program” by containment. These policies and proce-dures along with applicable codes, rules and regulations are intended specifically to provide reasonable and required protection for the Atlanta Water Supply System against contamination and/or pollution resulting from backflow and/or back-siphonage through cross-connection and/or controlled plumbing connections.

Capacity Certification Program: This task was turned over to the City by the Program Management Team and Clean Water Atlanta in January 2009. Estimated to save the City and DWM over $1 million/year, the Cap Cert team processed a record number of applications (over 500) during 2013. As an example of excel-lent customer service provided, the Cap Cert Team answered approximately 400 Requests for Information (RFI) from the general public and the development community during 2013.

Implementation of a Division Training Coordinator: Implementation of a smooth and effective functioning of training events. This involves researching, planning and execution of regular training programs as well as assistance in planning for and facilitating webinars, “Lunch and Learns”, and other training programs re-quested or required by staff throughout the fiscal year. Must secure and manage training locations, includ-ing event space, securing catering for all applicable events, answering and responding to outside communi-cations such as phone calls, faxes, emails, and web-based inquiries; creating and organizing training mate-rials including participant binders and handouts, name tags, sign-in sheets, etc.; ensuring appropriate sup-plies are on site for all events; housing, maintaining, and updating the hard files and electronic files pertain-ing to training programs and clients; and, assisting all licensed and certified employees with the renewal processes.

Implementation of a Division Travel Coordinator: Implementation of a smooth, effective and timely sub-mission of travel funding requests to the appropriate persons. This involves the following processes: ensure that all requests are submitted timely, that the employee has his or her manager’s approval to attend an event; all supporting documents are included in the request (F-1 Form); the correct amount is requested; the correct funding, account, and center is used for the monies to be allocated; and that all initials and signa-tures are obtained.
