Scope Note

The papers of Dwight Oliver Wendell Holmes (1877-1963), college president, educator,

author, and scholar-college athlete cover the time period 1897-1948. Dr. Holmes served

as the first African American president of Morgan College beginning on September 1,

1937. The collection includes 11 series: personal papers, family papers, financial records,

organizational affiliations, correspondence, writing and speeches by Holmes, Morgan

College, Howard University, subject files, writings by others, photographs and artifacts.

These various series contain materials documenting the life of Dr. Holmes as a scholar,

Dean of the Graduate School and Professor of Education at Howard University,

President of Morgan College, and member of numerous professional and civic

organizations. .

The bulk of materials document the professional life of Dr. Holmes during his tenure at

Howard University. He was greatly involved in the campus culture while matriculating in

the 1890s. Involved in the varsity football and baseball teams the images and names of

players are well documented. He was actively involved in the alumni association serving

on the semi-centennial committee. There are several artifacts that chronicle the 1917

event.

His prolific writings and speeches chronicle the evolution of nuanced understanding of

education in general and higher education in particular pertaining to African Americans

in segregated settings. The importance of funding and adequate library facilities are

salient elements of his advocacy for all African American institutions. Of note is a

budding discussion on the need for physical education and appropriate gymnasiums to

accommodate college students in developing their complete selves.

Scope Note continued

There are several images of former Howard colleagues of note are the images from his

travels. There are glass plate images and notes documenting the creation of the Panama

Canal. There are images of early aviation and travel images from Egypt. These divergent

materials offer a unique view of Dr. Holmes whose educational pedagogy embraced

educating the whole man/student.

Another aspect of his collection is a wealth of course syllabi from educational courses.

These syllabus document the widening scope of higher educational interest from mere

instruction to formulating identity and purpose beyond instruction. Courses on

sociology and psychology of education along with advances in technology and

modernization provide a glimpse into the formation of sound liberal educational

instruction.

The Holmes papers were donated by the Holmes family after his retirement in 1947. Dr.

Holmes remained affiliated with Morgan throughout the term of his successor Dr. Martin

D. Jenkins.
