During a relatively short period at the end of the nineteenth century,
George Eastman was instrumental in transforming the labor-intensive and
expensive art of photography into a popular and aordable hobby. The
phenomenal success that Eastman had in these early years of his business
was in most part due to the successful innovation that opened up
photography to the population as a whole.
hile Eastman was wor!ing as a boo!!eeper in a ban! in "ochester,
#ew $or!, he spent his leisure time wor!ing on a process for ma!ing dry
plates. %y &''(, Eastman had perfected the process. ithout leaving his )ob
at the ban!, he established the Eastman Dry *late +ompany. The business
grew so uic!ly that by &''& Eastman had given up his )ob at the ban! in
order to develop the business.
+hanges to simplify the process of ta!ing photographs followed one after
another. n &'', Eastman too! a step that made photography a less
cumbersome process/ he replaced the unwieldy glass plates with paper-bac!ed roll 0lm. 1our years later, the hand-held 2oda! was introduced. This
camera came loaded with enough 0lm to ta!e a hundred photographs and
produced round-shaped pictures approximately six centimeters in diameter.
3omething that made this camera very popular was that a photographer did
not need to !now how to develop 0lm in order to use it4 after using up the
0lm, the photographer sent the loaded camera bac! to the factory, where
the photographs were processed and the camera was reloaded and returned
to its owner. n &'56, another innovation, 0lm that could be loaded in the
daylight, allowed amateur photographers to load their own 0lm successfully.
1rom ancient times, amber has had a strong allure, with its warm color,
resinous feel, translucence, and curious 7ec!s trapped beneath its surface.
8s early as the #eolithic period, people were carving amber into 0gures and
symbols which were worn as special charms or used for adornment. Today,
however, amber has attracted a new audience, scientists who are interested
in studying the unusual 7ec!s. These tiny spots in amber are of interest to
scientists because many are actually preserved organisms inside the amber.
Though often used in )ewelry, amber is not a precious stone, a semi-
precious stone, or even a mineral. nstead, it is the fossili9ed resin, or gum,
from trees. t diers from other fossils, however, in that other fossils are
generally mineral replacements of original structures, while amber is entirely
organic4 i.e., it is derived from living organisms. n the millions of years that it
ta!es for amber to form, its composition has stayed substantially the same
as that of the resin that formed it.

:arge deposits of amber in the Dominican "epublic and ;exico are 6< to
=( million years old, and the eastern %altic region boasts huge deposits of
amber that are &< million years older. The extreme age of amber, coupled
with its organic ma!e-up, have caused amber to become the focus of recent
scienti0c interest. ;odern technology has been used to determine that the
tiny organisms caught in amber have been preserved to a remar!able degreedue to the organic nature of the amber4 soft tissue, cellular detail, and D#8
of ancient organisms have all been preserved, providing information that
cannot be obtained from other fossils of that age.
hereas planetary orbits tend to be nearly circular, those of comets are
elliptical>li!e stretched out rubber bands. The reappearance of a comet isproportional to the length of its orbit. ?alley@s comet completes its tre!
approximately once every A< years, whereas the lesser magnitude En!e
comet ma!es its rounds in a mere =.= years. Bther comets, such as
?ya!uta!e C&55, have such elongated orbits that they may pass through
the solar system only once every thousand years or more.
There are three constituent parts of a comet/ the nucleus, the coma, and
the tail. The nucleus of a comet is composed of primarily silicate dust
particles embedded in ice4 hence, the comet has been informally dubbed a
Fdirty snowball.F 3urrounding the nucleus is a vaporous coma of dust and
gases that extends for tens of thousands of miles.
hen a comet approaches the 3un, its tail develops rapidly. %lasted by
solar winds and light pressure, gases and dust are forced away from the
coma, forming a for!ed tail. 8 comet@s tail always points away from the 3un,
somewhat analogous to long hair being blown bac! by a wind. The tail
increases in length as the comet approaches perihelion, its closest distance
to the 3un. n the &5&( appearance of ?alley@s comet, the tail was calculated
to be some &

famous Bregon Trail west. 1ive months after the start of the trip, they veered
o the trail and settled in a mining camp in ;ontana. #ot long after their
arrival, +harlotte and "obert succumbed to illness one after the other,
leaving their children to fend for themselves. These humble lives would have
been forgotten had it not been for the eldest daughter, ;artha, who later
achieved celebrity as +alamity ane.
;artha ane +annary was a real woman with a very interesting life. 8t
the age of &, forced to ma!e her own way in the world, she 0rst too! on
what was considered women@s wor!, such as coo!ing and washing laundry.
:ater, she dressed in men@s clothing and too! on wor! not open to women/
she laid trac! for the nation@s 0rst transcontinental railroad and wor!ed as a
bullwhac!er, a driver of bull teams. 3he also acuired the habit of cursing
ferociously and drin!ing raw, frontier whis!ey. t was around this time that
people started calling her +alamity ane, and, as her fame grew, she began
appearing in ild est shows in the East. 8fter a stint in the shows, she
headed bac! west to Deadwood, where she put pen to paper and captured
her life story in a boo!. The story that she produced, however, was more
0ction than fact. t was by writing down the in7ated version of her life story
that this frontier woman named ;artha ane, who dressed, dran!, and swore
li!e a man, created a true heroine of the Bld est.
+alamity ane certainly was a heroine of the Bld est, at least in the
stories she told. ?er s!ill at telling ama9ing and exciting stories about her
many adventures inspired others to write about them in newspapers. 8s
these tall tales grew into legends, +alamity was depicted as a sharpshooter,
a competitor with %ualo %ill, a scout for General +uster, and a death-defying daredevil. t seems that ;artha ane +annary is !nown today, not for
the unusual life she actually led, but for the tall tales that she created about
a larger-than-life character named +alamity ane.
*olymorphs are minerals with a common composition but distinct internal
structures. *olymorphs exist because of the widely varying physical
conditions under which minerals are formed. ;inerals can be formed in the
0erce heat well below the Earth@s surface or in cold, damp domains much
closer to the surface. ;ost of the elements that ma!e up minerals are widelydistributed throughout the planet@s crust. +ompounds with li!e chemical
compositions can be created in dierent physical settings, resulting in
compounds with two or more strongly dierentiated internal structures, each
of which is stable in a dierent physical setting. These related minerals with
unli!e crystal structures are !nown as polymorphs, which means Fseveral
forms.F

8 commonly cited illustration is carbon, which has four !nown
polymorphs. Two of the polymorphs of carbon, chaoite and lonsdaleite, are
uite rare and have only been found in meteorites. The most widespread of
carbon@s four polymorphs is graphite, which forms loosely bonded crystals at
relatively low temperatures and pressures. ;uch of the Earth@s crust is
conducive to the formation of graphite, ma!ing graphite the most pervasiveof carbon@s polymorphs. Diamond is another polymorph of carbon, one that
reuires the high temperatures and pressures deep within the Earth@s crust

1urther to the west, the Grand +anyon is one of the world@s mostspectacular natural phenomenons. t is located in the northern part of the
state of 8ri9ona, in the Hnited 3tates of 8merica. +overing one and one
uarter million acres, it stretches 6AA miles east to west and extends & to &'
miles in width. The depth has been measured at one mile, which is deeper
than any other canyon in the world. t is easy to see why the Grand +anyon
is included as one of the seven wonders of the world.
Tourist travel to the canyon began as early as &'5( and increased rapidly
after a hotel was built on the 3outh "im seven years later. n &5&5, the Grand
+anyon *ar! was established, with its headuarters on the 3outh "im of the
canyon. #inety percent of the visitors view the Grand +anyon from the 3outh"im, which, unli!e the #orth "im, is open year round. Jisitors can drive
around the canyon to the #orth "im by using a road that is 6& miles long.
They can also cross the canyon over a 6&-mile trail on a two-day hi!e. ;ost
visitors drive along the par! roads, stopping at scenic viewing points, and
many ta!e wal!s along the canyon rim or hi!e along one of the =' trails.
+ampers can ride mules down into the canyon, and water enthusiasts rent
boats or canoes to use on the +olorado "iver.
The habitat for wildlife at the Grand +anyon is spectacular. The white-
tailed 2aibab suirrel and pin! Grand +anyon sna!e are indigenous and
exclusive to this area. 3ome other animals of interest that roam the canyon
are el!, deer, mountain lions, and bighorn and pronghorn sheep, while the
+olorado "iver is home to a beaver population. %ird lovers can scan the s!ies
for approximately =(( species of birds. The Grand +anyon is a diverse region
of vast proportions with in0nite scenes of wild beauty.
8 hoax of some note was apparently perpetrated on 8ppleton@s
+yclopedia of 8merican %iography, an important 8merican biographical
dictionary that was published in &''5. This extensive and well-regarded
reference was published with a number of biographies of scientists who most
li!ely never existed or who never actually undertoo! the research cited in the
biographical dictionary.
t was not until some =( years after 8ppleton@s +yclopedia was 0rst
published that word of the fa!e biographies began cropping up. t was noted
in a &5&5 article in the ournal of the #ew $or! %otanical Garden that at least
-

& of the biographies of botanists were fa!e. Then, in &5=A, an article in the
8merican ?istorical "eview declared that at least &' more biographies were
false.
The source of the false biographies is not !nown to this day, but a loo! at a
number of steps in the process by which articles were submitted to thebiographical encyclopedia sheds some light on how such a hoax could have
occurred. 1irst, contributors were paid by the number and length of articles
submitted, and the contributors themselves, as experts in their respective
0elds, were invited to suggest new names for inclusion. Then the false
biographies were created in such a way as to ma!e veri0cation of facts by
the publisher extremely diIcult in an era without the instantaneous
communication of today/ the false biographies were all about people who
supposedly had degrees from foreign institutions and who had published
their research 0ndings in non-English language publications outside of the
Hnited 3tates. 1inally, the reference itself provides a long list of contributors
but does not list which articles each of the contributors submitted, and,
because the hoax was not discovered until well after the reference was 0rst
published, the publishing company no longer had records of who had
submitted the false information.
Hnfortunately, the false information about historical research did not
disappear with the 0nal publication of the boo!. Though it is now out of print,
many libraries have copies of this comprehensive and, for the most part,
highly useful reference. Even more signi0cant is the fact that a number of
false citations from 8ppleton@s +yclopedia have cropped up in other
reference sources and have now become part of the established chronicle ofscienti0c and historical research.
The Golden Gate %ridge was only a far-fetched idea before the &5((s.
The name Golden Gate, which refers to the channel between the two
peninsulas where the city of 3an 1rancisco and ;arin +ounty face each other,
is a narrow and turbulent body of water at the entrance to 3an 1rancisco %ay.
n the early &'((s, when what is now 3an 1rancisco was the small village of
$erba %uena, tan! boats provided passage across this narrow strait to the
wealthy few who could aord this mode of transportation. 8s tiny $erba%uena grew into the bustling city of 3an 1rancisco, there was a need for
improved transportation across the channel. %y &'', there was regular ferry
service for wor!ers who lived in ;arin +ounty, and the notion of a bridge to
span the channel was being circulated.

determination. n &5&, the 3an 1rancisco %ulletin proclaimed that it was

leaves, chloroplasts tend to be more spherical and evenly spaced throughout
the cells in order to maximi9e absorption of diused rays.
Though chlorophylls are eIcient light-gathering pigments, caretenoids
assist chlorophylls in photosynthesis. +aretenoid molecules boost
photosynthesis energy levels by passing on their gathered photon energy toneighboring chorophyll reaction centers. ;ore signi0cantly, however,
caretenoids help protect chlorophyll from irreparable solar damage. Bn bright
days when the leaf is FpumpedF full of light and heat energy, the caretenoids
act as sponges, absorbing excess energy from the chlorophyll and dissipating
it harmlessly, thus preventing the delicate chlorophyll from being scorched.

Galilei, an amateur musician and the father of Galileo, the famous

Bpera was conceived in the minds and hearts of these visionaries,
motivated by a desire to improve the uality of music for the stage.
3earching for direction, they loo!ed to the authority of the ancient Gree!dramas and set about trying to revive them. 3ince the actual Gree! music
was un!nown, the club engaged in arduous study of the writings of the great
philosophers. +areful speculation and long, animated discussions revealed
the secret of Gree! stage music/ the perfect union of words and music,
achieved by ma!ing the words dominant. %ased on this profound insight,
they established three principles/ the text must be clearly understood, the
words must be sung, and the music must interpret the feeling of the entire

adding the Bregon Territory to its empire. n &', England gave up control

8nother type of growth also occurs in trees, in the cambium, a layer of
cells covering the woody part of the tree. The trun!, branches, and roots
become wider and thic!er as the cells in the cambium divide. This causes the
cambium to grow outward and form visible tree rings, one for each year of
growth. This growth in the tree@s girth is perhaps not as noticeable as the
growth of leaves, the lengthening of the branches, and the increasing height
of the tree, but it is eually important. ithout the added circumference on
the trun!, roots, and branches, a tree could not support any added height.
8 loo! at the tree rings that are added each year to the trun!, roots, and
branches of a tree with the growth of the cambium can provide insight into
the speed at which the tree has developed. hen growth has been slow,
perhaps during periods of drought, the tree rings are more narrow. hen
growth has been rapid, during periods conducive to growth, the tree rings
are broader.
hether or not the rings of a tree are lopsided provides further insight
into the development of a tree. 3everal factors can cause the tree rings to be
o center. Bne such factor concerns exposure of a tree to wind and othernatural elements. 8 tree that grows in an exposed location will have slower
growth on the exposed side and faster growth on the side protected from the
elements, causing its rings to be lopsided. 8nother factor that aects the
symmetry of the rings in the branches is the si9e of the branches. :arge
branches tend to grow faster on the underside than on the topside in order to
support the weight of the branch.
The hummingbird possesses the highest aerobic metabolism in the
animal !ingdom. This tiny bird feeds itself by hovering, in helicopter fashion,in front of a 7ower while sipping nectar, beating its wings at the incredible
rate of ( to A< times per second, so fast that the wings appear as a blur to
the na!ed eye. ?over-7ight uses so much energy that a hummingbird must
daily consume approximately &'( meals or three times its own body weight
in nectar )ust to survive. ronically, the hummingbird spends nearly A<
percent of its wa!ing hours sitting idly on a perch. Thus, the wa!e-cycle of
-

the hummingbird is characteri9ed by long periods of inactivity punctuated by
short bursts of intense foraging.
The heart of the hummingbird is the engine that drives its high-powered
metabolism. n general, the hearts of birds are not only larger but also more
powerful than those of mammals or reptiles of comparable si9e. There is aninverse relationship between overall body si9e and heart si9e, with smaller
birds having proportionately larger hearts. 1or example, an ostrich weighing
&6= !ilos has a heart that accounts for only & percent of its body mass. %y
contrast, an average hummingbird with a body weight of merely .' grams
has an FenormousF heart at &.& grams, accounting for nearly 6< percent of
its total body mass.
hereas the relative si9e of a heart determines the power of the engine,
the heart rate Ci.e., heartbeats per minute is a measurement of how fast the
engine is running. n birds, the heart rate is higher than it is in mammals of
comparable si9e. 8lso, smaller birds have higher heart rates than do largerones. The resting heart rate of the common pigeon is 66&, whereas that of
the ruby-throated hummingbird is &. %y comparison, the average human
heart beats A6 times per minute.
8s evening falls, the hummingbird faces a drastic metabolic crisis>
surviving the chilly night hours without refueling itself. #evertheless, it is
able to stretch its limited reserves by suppressing its metabolism, which in
turn causes the bird@s body temperature to drop to within a few degrees of
the ambient temperature. The basal temperature of 8nna@s hummingbird, for
instance, can plummet from a ='-degree +elsius daytime reading to a frigid
& degrees +elsius at night. ?ummingbirds can even revert to a torpor, a
dormant state with rigidity and closed eyes. Torpidity is characteristic of
reptiles but is extremely rare among birds.
