This was a wonderful start to the morning, with most children (and staff) dressing up to celebrate the importance of reading. The P&C hosted a morning tea for parents and grandparents after the parade, which once again, was a very well attended event. Thank you to one of the P&C parents, Mandy Marrett for your hard work in organising this special morning and the parents who donated cakes and treats for the occasion. Faction Athletics Carnival – Thursday 27 August A final event in this very busy week at Duncraig, is the faction athletics carnival. The jumps, throws and distance running events will occur this Tuesday 25 August, with the main athletics carnival on Thursday. The program for both days is available on the school website under the Parent Notes tab. Please be aware that inclement weather may mean that amendments to the program will occur on the day. If very wet weather conditions are predicted for Thursday, the carnival will be postponed to the Friday. Parents will be notified on Wednesday afternoon at 3pm via Tiqbiz and the school website should the carnival need to be postponed. Unfortunately I will be on leave for the carnival, however I am delighted to advise you that Mr Gary Stenhouse will be visiting for the day to assist both Mr Ted Orzel (P.E. teacher) and Mr Taylor Webb (Deputy Principal). Open Night – Wednesday 26 August I look forward to seeing many families on Wednesday night as you enjoy seeing the classroom achievements of your children this year at our annual open night. The evening commences at 5.30pm and will conclude at 7.00pm. As advised previously, there will not be a P&C sausage sizzle this year because of their athletics carnival commitments the following day. The library and Book Fair will also be open to visit. Kindergarten Site Update In the last newsletter, I advised the community that the Marri Road kindergarten site would be closing. As a result, the early childhood facilities at the school will be expanded with a second classroom added to the kindergarten site on the school grounds. In addition to the classroom, improvements to the grounds area will be made, including expanding the internal play area and the installation of a bike track. This work is planned to occur before the end of the school year. Lisa Tucker Principal

HEALTH NEWS

Head Lice Alert

Please check your children’s hair. There are currently a large number of cases of head lice occurring in all

year groups. Information on treatment methods can be found on the school website under Parent Information

or on the Healthy WA website : http://healthywa.wa.gov.au/Healthy-WA/Articles/S_T/Treating-head-lice .

Whooping Cough- (pertussis)

Whooping Cough (Pertussis) is a notifiable highly contagious, acute, respiratory bacterial infection and is

spread by air borne droplets from coughing and sneezing.

Whooping Cough can be life threatening in babies and young children.

The incubation periods usually ranges from 4 to 21 days.

The infectious period is up to 21 days after the onset of the cough.

People diagnosed with Whooping Cough must stay away from school and work while infectious (21 days) OR

after they have completed a course of recommended antibiotics. Even after the antibiotics the “cough” can

continue for a number of weeks.

Older children and adults can become infected with Whooping Cough and while their symptoms are usually

less severe, they can pass on this infection to others. They may just have the “cough” that lasts for weeks.

It usually starts like a “cold” with a blocked or runny nose, tiredness, mild fever and a cough. The “cough”

typically gets worse and severe bouts of coughing occur. The “cough” can last for several weeks and is often

worse at night. Some babies do not cough but they can stop breathing! Not every person makes the

“whooping” sound – usually more common in the unimmunised.

IMMUNISATION does fade over time and it is recommended that booster injections be attended.

If you have been exposed to someone with Whooping Cough, observe for any symptoms and see your Doctor

if you become unwell.

As it is a notifiable disease, the Doctors, hospitals and laboratories must confidentially notify the Public Health

Unit. This Unit will then provide advice to families.

REMEMBER – anyone can get Whooping Cough

Whooping Cough is dangerous

Vaccination is the best way to prevent this infection.
