SEETF Report

• A 2009 study, referenced in the 2nd SEETF Report, used the findings from a survey of nine partnership areas of the Republic of Ireland, to make an estimate that social enterprises in Ireland generate some F240 million in revenue, spend F230 million in Ireland and employ over 9,300 people directly and support a further 5,100 indirectly.

• The same report estimated that at least 12,500 people are involved with social enterprises in a voluntary capacity, thereby making a significant contribution to national policies on active citizenship.

‘Criteria to guide us’

• Social Enterprises have social and/or environmental objectives.

• Social Enterprises are trading businesses aspiring to financial independence.

• Social Enterprises have an ‘asset lock’ on both trading surplus and residual assets.

• A Social Enterprise cannot be the subsidiary of a public sector body.

• Social Enterprises are driven by values – both in their mission and business practices.
