Term 1 6 February 2015

Creating mature and responsible citizens

From our Principal’s Desktop Welcome back to the 2015 school year. I have enjoyed

working with an excellent group of Year 7 students who

have settled in very well to the new environment. I would

especially like to welcome all families who are new to the

school, a number who have come from other schools in

Dubbo.

We have had a very smooth start to the year. This is a re-

sult of solid planning and excellent support from staff, stu-

dents and the community about the direction our school

needs to take.

We welcome a number of new staff to our Campus this

year. Mrs Diane Baker has returned to us from Senior

Campus as Deputy Principal. The rest of our Senior Exec-

utive remains the same with Mr Damien Wood taking on

our Professional Learning role and Ms Chivonne Gofers

our Teaching and Learning Head Teacher. New staff in-

clude: Support staff: Ms Ferris, Mrs French, Mr Moodley,

Mr Norris and Mrs Schultz, Mrs Hiwale and Mr Madigan

(Maths), Ms Hogan (PDHPE) Mrs Hinton and Mrs Wright

(Science), Mrs Fraser and Ms Sutherland (Special Educa-

tion), Deb Dawson joins us from Delroy Campus (CAPA),

Mr Halpin and Mr Young (Learning Support), Nathan Riley

(Clontarf) and Mrs George, Ms Hemvititum, Ms Imrie and

Ms Mrowka (TAS).

This year a number of staff are also participating in cross

campus teaching with the Senior Campus. It is a great op-

portunity that allows staff to teach students through to the

HSC and for us to retain their skills at our site. I am sure

that our students will benefit from these structures.

Our term begins with approximately 730 students. For this

reason we have allocated specific year areas in the play-

ground. This includes a specific area for our Year 7 stu-

dents. Year 8 and 9 this year will be in the quadrangle ar-

ea and between C Block and the Hall. This will allow Year

10 to mix with all students and act as mentors for the

younger years. Year 10 have also been allocated an as-

sembly group that they will work with during the year.

A number of key events are planned in the first few weeks.

This includes our leader’s induction on Friday 13 February

in the school hall. School Captains, our Student Repre-

sentative Council, the Junior AECG. Sports Captains will

be recognised and awarded their badges on this day.

There will not be a P&C meeting this month. The next

meeting set down for Monday 9 March from 7.30pm is

our first P&C Meeting for 2015.

Our Welcome to Year 7 BBQ is on next Thursday 12 Feb-

ruary. All families will enjoy meeting staff and fellow par-

ents in this social environment.

A very successful school swimming carnival took place on

the first Friday of Term. Attendance at the Carnival was

excellent and results are available in this edition.

A number of things will also remain the same. This in-

cludes the mobile phone and electronic devices policy that

was introduced last year. Students are not to bring them to

school. If they are used they will be removed from students

and stored safely in the Library. A process is then in place

for parents to collect them from the school. The success of

this approach in reducing disruptions, especially in class-

rooms, and keeping a focus on effective learning means

that the policy is working and needs to be supported by

families.

I am looking forward to a very productive year. Can I once

again encourage as many parents as possible to come

along to our first P&C Meeting for the year on Monday 9

March. It will commence at 7.30pm in the Library.

Have a great week!

Darryl Thompson

Principal

Welcome back to what is sure to be another great year in

Sport!

We started off the year with our swimming carnival! Con-gratulations to Mr Smith on an excellent job in running the swimming carnival. See the results he has posted in the newsletter! Congratulations to all place getters, record holders, age champions and members of the winning house!

This week and next week start the college trials for the college teams that will go on to compete in CHS knock-outs. We have many students trialling for these teams so good luck to all involved! Don’t be disheartened if you do not make it as there are always plenty of teams at south to join.

Make sure you listen out for trials for sporting teams and ask your coaches about trials for western teams.

Good luck to the U15 girls who are playing in the next round of the knockouts on Friday!

Also we have many students outside of school who are succeeding in their sports! Jessica Ball has been selected in the NSW silver squad for Lawn Bowls Marty Jeffrey played an outstanding game of cricket scor-ing 85 runs getting 7/15 Clayton Couley scored one of the tries that helped the western U16 league team defeat the U15 NRL Knights team and Far west 16s in Mudgee over the weekend.

Stay tuned for more information about western swimming- I will be notifying students next week! Parents if you want to submit anytime for events that were not run at the carni-val please hand them in for your students to pass on.

Thank you Mrs Richardson (previously Miss Ryan )

Term 1 6 February 2015

Successful learning in dynamic, well managed classrooms

With the school year only just beginning the annual swim-ming carnival was the perfect way to start the year in a positive way. Aided by the help of our house captains, stu-dents at South Campus were rallied to come to the carni-val dressed to impress and to participate and cheer for their respective house.

The carnival started early for our competitive swimmers with the 200m, 400m and 200m Medley kicking off at 8am. These events were a great display of athleticism by all who competed.

The carnival was also an opportunity for students of all abilities to participate and win points for their house with numerous novelty events including the Mass Relay, Belly Flop Competition and 3 a side touch and Volleyball.

Congratulations to the following age

champions:

We had a large number of records broken on the day in-cluding Olivia Watmore who broke 4 school records, Jay-den Blake and Darcy Wood breaking 3 each and Billy Munn breaking 2. Ned Manton, Angus wood, Eliza Vail and Meg Keizer also deserve a special mention for break-ing records on the day.

Congratulations to Yarradaroo -

House Champions for the Swimming Carnival in 2015! As with any carnival it takes the work of a group of people and on behalf of South Campus I would like to extend my gratitude to the Staff who helped out with duties and en-tered numerous event to help motivate and inspire student participation!

We eagerly await the Athletics carnival in week 5 of Term 2!

Swimming Carnival 2015 CAREERS

I would just like to take this opportunity to welcome eve-

rybody back for another year at Dubbo College South

Campus. I trust all students enjoyed their break and

hope they developed a bit more interest in their future

career path, even if they found a path they did not want

to follow.

This term the careers team will be interviewing all of

Year 10 and will hopefully learn more about each and

every student. We will be encouraging students to com-

plete some kind of work experience during the year, and

hope some students have already considered the possi-

bilities. The Get Real Assembly has been set for 17th

March and all Year 10 students are expected to attend

and parents are welcome.

The Smith Family will be running the ITrack program

again this year. It is a program offered to Year 10 stu-

dents who may need assistance with their future aspira-

tions. An online mentor is assigned to each student and

they meet weekly (online) to catch up and discuss op-

tions. Please encourage your child to see me ASAP if

they may be interested.

For any job opportunities and/or important messages

please encourage your students to like the Dubbo Col-

lege Careers Facebook page. It is essential they check

their school emails, as Careers News is issued 15 times

a year and at times we may forward on information to

particular students. Dubbo College Careers also has the

Dubbo College Careers.com website that is updated

regularly with important information and resources. Last-

ly we also subscribe to Job Jump.com and the password

for all students is : rams. This website along with the

Dubbo College Careers website has many resources for

all students including resume templates, career pathway

information, UAC and university information.

I look forward to meeting with as many students as pos-sible this year. I will be at South Campus on Monday and Friday mornings and all day Tuesday. If you or your child needs to contact me at any other time they can email me [email protected] or leave a mes-sage either with the office or with Tim Long (Get Real Program) who shares the careers office.

Thankyou Mrs Vicki Kenyon

Hi all and welcome to 2015. The Mathematics faculty is

looking forward to meeting and working with all our new

students, Parents and Caregivers. Just a quick reminder

about some of the requirements students will need to

meet throughout 2015.

Welcome back! We hope you enjoyed a fantastic break!! We welcome Deb Dawson and Barb Livingston to the CA-PA staff this year! It is great to have these creative and talented teachers working with us in the faculty this year along with Casey Shirm, Emma Kersley, Alice Maher, Mar-garet Anderson and myself. We are all looking forward to another fabulous creative year with lots more wonderful activities, projects, opportunities and experiences to be shared by our students, staff, parents and friends. There are lots coming up so please listen carefully to the notices so you can become involved fully in school life and Crea-tive and Performing Arts Opportunities as they become available!

1. Nominations for Western Region Dance Camp are now available and need to be back to Ms Marshall by 20 February, this will take place from 30 March to 1 April at Dubbo Ballet School Studios.

2. Nominations for Aboriginal Bangarra Workshops are now open. This will be held here at South Campus on 23 March for both guys and gals who are inter-ested.

3. A very exciting opportunity for all students to attend the world class “All Stars Show” on 18 March at the Regional Theatre. We have limited tickets available but this will require your commitment to secure the theatre ticket ASAP and your workshop place! This show is breathtaking and demonstrates pure physi-cal entertainment combin ing spectacle and urban culture such as bike riding, basketball, drumming (Gene Petersen) and much more. It’s appeal will be very broad and it is hoped many who’ve never been to the theatre before may become engaged with this fantastic production.

4. Joseph Simmons (former Dubbo man) has a show that will prove to be highly engaging on 21 March at the theatre which is strongly recommended.

5. The Play “One Day of the Year” is sure to get us thinking about ANZAC Day and especially with this year being the centenary.

6. Week 3 (next Thursday and Friday) will see me tak-ing approximately 22 drama students from South and Senior Campuses to Sydney for the two day “Onstage” HSC Showcase excursion. We will also

be workshopping and watching a performance with Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP).

7. The WPCC have some fantastic exhibitions coming up including Art Express (with Leila Kirkness a Sen ior students from the College work included) in this. Congratulations to Leila on her wonderful achieve ment.

Congratulations also to former South students Amber Bunt who accelerated in dance and completed her HSC in this last year. She gained a band 6 for her efforts and was the only regional student to be successfully chosen for the HSC Showcase “Callback” being held next week in Syd-ney. A fantastic achievement so well done Amber! Miss Kersley and Mrs Maher invite all students with an in-terest in music to find ways to get ‘onboard’ again this year and pursue/develop your musical skills.

The combined band meets Monday afternoons at South. The Jazz Band “South In Session” meets Tuesday morn-ing before school and the vocal ensemble group “Take Note” gathers on Tuesdays period 4.

We would love to continue to build the numbers and talent within these groups so please don’t be shy, come forward and have some fun being a part of these groups.

Next week we will be attending the Kaldor Arts Project for the community information session at the Gallery. This sounds exciting, if you want to be involved or want to know more contact WPCC and find out how you can get involved.

As you can see, there is a lot to kick off the year with so it’s time to jump on board and explore the Creative and Per-forming Arts within your community. If you want to know more please ask.

As I finish up my report, I forgot to mention that the Dubbo Eisteddfod syllabuses are now out so think about ‘getting your act together!’ While it is not till May/June entries close in March so thinking caps on! What will you do this year?

Here’s to another fun and creative year.

Cheers Jules Marshall
