REMEMBRANCE DAY 11.11.18

Miss Bermingham Deputy Principal accompanied Delroy students to the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Cenotaph in Victoria Park, on Sunday 11 November 2018.

The students and fellow members of the crowd observed a minute’s silence at 11.00am to honour those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. This year Remembrance Day held special significance, as it is 100 years to the day that World War 1 ended with the signing of an Armistice. In the four years of the First World War more than 330,000 Australians had served overseas and more than 60,000 were killed, 82,000 were wounded in battle and a further 88,000 suffered a

variety of illnesses and injuries. ~ Lest We Forget ~

Year 10 Final Assembly 1.30pm

Deputy Principal’s message…. Spectacular, spectacular, spectacular that is what Delroy has been this term so far. Congratulations to the CAPA staff, students and staff who performed at the latest ASPIRE night. Once again many talents on display, band, artworks, choir, didgeridoo, circus performances and some exceptional video clips with deep and powerful messages for all. Delroy has shown respect to our fallen soldiers at a number of ceremonies both at school and in the wider community. Thank you to those students who have represented Delroy to the highest standard. Exams have been completed. Congratulations to all the students who displayed dedication and commitment to achieving their best. Delroy has once again been successful in having representatives at this year’s Schools Spectacular. Delroy has four dancers and three circus performers performing to their best to impress all on the well known Schools Spectacular Stage in Sydney. We wish the students all the best and we also thank Mrs Budden, Mr Woohead and Ms Dawson, from South Campus, for giving up their time for the week to be with our students and a number of students from other local schools, assisting them in their travelling, rehearsing and general wellbeing while they are preparing for the big event. The school term is still packed with events. Transition is ongoing for our primary school partners and our Year 10 transition to Year 11 Senior Campus will start in Week 9. This will give our Year 10 students a feel for what senior schooling will be like in 2019. Mulgabirra has started again and our Year 9 students are working very well with our Buninyong partners in all areas of the junior school curriculum. The students will gain a Certificate 1 in Active Volunteering. Each year group has, or will have, the opportunity to attend their relevant end of year excursion and no doubt will enjoy some very memorable experiences. Year 10 have a busy few weeks to come with their Year 10 Dinner on Tuesday 27 No-vember, their transition, their last Delroy assembly and Delroy’s annual awards night. School has not ended. There is a lot to do. Finishing assessment tasks, completing curriculum outcomes, excursions, transition, marking exams, report writing, annual awards assembly and oh yes, preparing for 2019. “Go as far as you can see; when you get there, you’ll be able to see further.” - Thomas Carlyle -

Aspire night at Delroy Campus on 6 November 2018

featured the talents of our students in music, art and drama along with some of our teachers. The evening began with a humorous skit from Miss Bermingham and Miss Tonks. Miss Bermingham performed the John Williamson’s song Teach Me to Drive, (a tractor) Dad - that is ‘Mum’ at Delroy played by Miss Tonks. The audience was then treat-ed to some wonderful performances from the Delroy Band, Vocal Ensemble and Support Band, featuring Tyreece and his Michael Jackson impersonation. Visitors also enjoyed Dance and Trapeze displays by the students and were then able to behold the wonderful art and photography exhibition during the break where they were treated to a delightful supper. A great night was had by all. Thank you to the Delroy CAPA team and students.

Strive Class Scoop….

I am amazed at how quickly time has flown by, especially this term. With around four weeks to go, students have been very busy working through their examinations and end-of-year assessment tasks. While much of the semester’s final assessments have taken place, students are encouraged to stay focused on their learning and establish strong study habits that should allow them to achieve further success in Year 9. Success is usually the end product of a lot of hard work, and rarely the result of pure luck. We are wrapping up our studies of unbalanced forces in Science, and about to begin exploring the wonders of space. The attached photos show students involved in learning about static electricity- thanks to Mr Tomasek who guided students through the use of the Van de Graaff generator. It certainly was a hair-raising experience for us! In Maths, students are still heavily involved in the completion of their Area and Volume Design Project. Students have been provided with opportunities to work on this task in class, but are also strongly encouraged to take it home over the weekends and do some extra work on it. The final date for submission of this task is 7th December. We are continuing our Introduction to Shakespeare in English, with students becoming familiar with the themes and plot lines in a number of Shakespeare’s plays. They are also discovering the links between his work and contemporary adaptations that they may not have known were based on Shakespeare’s plays. It is hoped that we can compare some of these film adaptations as the term draws near to an end. Our Class Project continues, albeit out of our normal routine due to examinations. Students continue to embrace making food for after-noon tea at Homework Centre on a fortnightly basis. Our latest creations were a Pineapple Upside Down Cake; and Rosemary, Garlic and Cheese Biscuits. As always, this project would not be possible without the generous and ongoing support of Woolworths Delroy Park. Mrs Rachel Cody Strive Teacher

A poem by a Canadian medical officer, Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, was first published in the British Punch magazine in December 1915. McCrae later became a casualty of the war, dying in January 1918. However his poem has endured as a symbol of the sacrifice of those who fought during the First World War and is particularly identified with the losses around

the Ypres Salient battlefield Belgium.
