Dua of Umm Dawood

In the word of Shaykh al-Tusiy, in his book of ‘MiSbah al-Mutahajjid,’ one who intends to do this act is required to observe fasting on the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth days of Rajab. At the midday of the fifteenth, one should bathe himself. After midday, one should offer the obligatory Zuhr and `Asr Prayers so excellently that one should do all the parts perfectly. It is advisable to be in a vacant place so as not to be engaged with anything and not to be addressed by anyone. When the (obligatory) prayer is accomplished, one should face the kiblah and recite Surah of al-Fatihah one hundred times, Surah of al-Tawhed one hundred times, and Ayat al-Kursiy ten times. Afterward, Surahs of al-An`am (No. 6), al-Isra’ (also called Bane-Isra'el; No. 17), al-Kahf (No. 18), Luqman (No. 31), Yasen (No. 36), al-Wasaffat (No. 37), al-Zukhruf (No. 43), al-Shura (No. 42), Al-Dukhan (No. 44), al-Fath (No. 48), al-Waqi`ah (No. 56), al-Mulk (No. 67), al-Qalam (No. 68), al-Inshiqaq (No. 84) and all the Surahs following up to the end of the Holy Qur'an.

After reciting all these Surahs, one may, still facing the kiblah, recite the following:

True are the words of Allah, the All-great,

Allah bears witness that there is no god but He,

and (so do) the angels and those possessed of knowledge,

la ilaha illa huwa al`azezu alhakemu

there is no god but He, the Mighty, the Wise.

and I am of those who bear witness to that.

and to You belongs the confession of Your being the One and Only God,

and to You is all thanks and all praise

and those observing fasting with devotion, and those who ardently serve You,

O the Aide; O the Grantor of wealth; O the Giver to hold;

O the Creator; O the Onlooker; O the One;

O the Safeguarding; O the Firm (in punishment);

O the Aid; O the Donor; O the Straitening;

عنا م ya man `ala fasta`la ي

O He Who has mounted to the most elevated point;

نم بال fakana bilmanzari ala`la فكان

He thus occupies the most exalted site;

فدنا،ب قرنا م ya man qaruba fadana ي

O He Who has approached so closely that He has become the nearest of all things;

أى،د فنعب wa ba`uda fanaa و

and, at the same time, He has been so far that He is in the furthest point;

and He has known the secret and even what is more hidden;

ya man ilayhi alttdberu wa lahu almaqaderu

O He to Whom all management is relegated and to Whom all measures are referred;

wa ya mani al`aseru `alayhi sahlun yaserun

O He for Whom the most difficult thing is easy and simple;

ya man huwa `ala ma yasha‘u qaderun

O He Who has power over anything that He wills;

O the Lord of magnanimity and lenience;

فات،ا قد م اده ا ر ya radda ma qad fata ي

O He Who has the power to restore that which has been missed;

ات،و األما ناشر

ya nashira alamwati ي

O He Who resurrects the dead bodies;

ات،ت الشهامعا ج ya jami`a alshshatati ي

O He Who draws together the dispersal;

بغري يشاءن مازقا ر ي

ya raziqa man yasha‘u bighayri hisabin

O He Who provides sustenance to whomever He wants without measure;

ا فاعل م

ي و

wa ya fa`ila ma yasha‘u kayfa yasha‘u

O He Who has the power to do whatever He wills however He wills;

ا يام،و

ج ;wa ya dhaljalali wal-ikrami O the Lord of Majesty and Honor ذا ال

،ومها قي ي ه ا ح ;ya hayyu ya qayyumu O the Ever-living; O the Eternal ي

، ه حني ال ح

اهيا ح ya hayyan hena la hayya ي

O He Who existed when there existed nothing else;

،وتم الييحا م ي ه ا ح ya hayyu ya muhiyya almawta ي

O the Ever-living; O the Reviver of the dead;

ت إاله أن ال إهل ه اح ya hayyu la ilaha illa anta ي

O the Ever-living; there is no god save You;

األر bade`u alssmawati wal-arzi .و

the excellent Maker of the heavens and the earth.

:ya ilahy wa sayyidy O my God and my Master ي

Salli `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin

(please do) send blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

، د مه حآل م ودا مه حم محار و

warham muhammadan wa ala muhammadin

and have mercy upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad

، د مه حآل مد و مه حل م عاركب و

wa barik `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin

and send benedictions upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad

kama Sallayta wa barakta wa rahimta `ala ibrahema wa ali ibrahema

in the same way as You have sent blessings and benedictions and had mercy upon Ibraham and the household of Ibraham.

، جيد م innaka hamedun majedun إنهك حيد

You are verily worthy of all praise and full of all glory.

فاقتيم ذله و

حار warham dhully wa faqaty و

and have mercy upon my humiliation and neediness,

فق wa faqry wanfirady wa wahdate و

and upon my poverty and loneliness and aloneness,

wa khuzu`y bayna yadayka and my humbleness before You و

ك،ليادي ع

تماع wa`timady `alayka and my reliance upon You و

ك،عي إلي

هضرت .wa tazarr`y ilayka and my submission before You و

ليل خاضع اله الاءعوك دع ad`uka du`a‘a alkhazi`i aldhdhleli أد

I implore You with the imploring of the humble, the subservient,

خائف خاشع ال

alkhashi`i alkha’ifi the fearful, the scared ال

ائس بفق الشم ,almushfiqi alba’isi the afraid, the miserable ال

قري حهني ال

م ,almaheni alhaqeri the modest, the insignificant ال

فقري ائع الج ,alja’i`i alfaqeri the hungry, the poor ال

جري ستمائذ الع al`a’idhi almustajeri ال

the seeker of Your refuge and the seeker of Your protection,

به،ه بذنقرم ,almuqirr bidhanbihi the confessing of his sin ال

،هفر من

غستم almustaghfiri minhu ال

the seeker of Your forgiveness from his sin,

ه، به كني لر

ستم ;almustakeni lirabbhi the humble to his Lord ال

ه ثقتهتلم أسن ماءع du`a‘a man aslamathu thiqatuhu د

and with the imploration of one whom has been disappointed by those whom he trusts,

،هت ه أحبهفضتر wa rafazathu ahibbatuhu و

and the one whom is rejected by his intimate ones,

،هت فجيع

تظمع wa `azumat faje`atuhu و

and the one whose catastrophe has been enormous;

حاءع du`a‘a hariqin hazenin د

and with the imploration of one burning and sad,

هني ,za`efin mahenin and weak and mortified ضعيف م

كني ستائس م

,ba’isin mustakenin and depressed and wretched ب

جري ست bika mustajerin .بك م

and one who is resorting to Your shelter.

ليكألك بأنهك م

أس و اللههه

allahumma wa as-aluka bi’annaka malekun

O Allah: I also beseech You for You are the King,

،كونر ي أم منا تشاء

أنهك م

وwa annka ma tasha‘u min amrin yakunu

and for that whatever You will shall definitely take place,

قدير ا تشاء

ل مأنهك ع

.وwa annka `ala ma tasha‘u qaderun

and for that You have power over all things.

wa asaluk bihurmati hadha alshshahri alharami

and I beseech You in the name of this sacred month’s holiness,

ام،رحت اليبال wal-bayti alharami و

and the Sacred House (Baytul Haram),

ام،رحل البال ,wal-baladi alharami and the Sacred Town و

قام،مالن وك هالر wal-rrukni wal-maqami و

and the Rukn (i.e. the corner of the Holy Kaabah) and the Maqam (i.e. the standing-place of Prophet Abraham)

مال ,wal-masha`iri al`izami and the great rituals و

wa bihaqqi nabiyyka muhammadin `alayhi wa alihi alssalamu

and in the name of Your Prophet, Muhammad—peace be upon him and his Household.

ya man wa haba li-adama shaythan

O He Who gave Shayth to Adam,

إساهيرألب و

wa li-ibrahema isma`ela wa ishaqa

and He Who gave Ismael and Ishaq to Ibraham,

wa ya man radda yusufa `ala ya`quba

and He Who returned Yusuf to Yaqoub,

wa ya man kashafa ba`da albala‘i zurra aiyyuba

and He Who relieved Job from his harm after long hardships.

O He Who returned Musa to his mother,

خضائد الز wa za’ida alkhizri fe `ilmihi و

and He Who increased al-Khizr with knowledge,

،انملي سداو لهب ونا مي و

wa ya man wa haba lidawuda sulaymana

and He Who gave Solomon to Dawood,

ى،يحا ي هكريلز wa lizakariyya yahea و

and He Who gave Yahya to Zachariah,

ى، عيس رميلم ;wa limariyama `esa and He Who gave Isa to Mariam و

ا ح ya hafiza binti shu`aybin ي

O He Who safeguarded the daughter of Shu`ayb;

وسه مل أما كافل و

ي و

wa ya kafila wa ladi a’umm musa wa ya kafila wa ladi ‘ummi musa

O He Who cared for the son of the mother of Musa;

آل د و مه حل م ع له تصألك أن

as-aluka an tuSalliya `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin

I beseech You to send blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad

ا، ل ذنوب كلهه

فرغ تأن و

wa an taghfira le dhunuby kullaha

and to forgive my all sins,

ذابك، عن منتجري

wa tujerany min `adhabika و

and to save me from Your chastisement,

انك أمانك و

و ل رض

توجب

و

wa tujiba le rizwanaka wa amanaka

and to confer upon me with Your pleasure and security,

انك رغفانك و

سإحو

انك جن .و

wa ihsanaka wa ghufranaka wa jinanaka

and with Your favoring, forgiveness, and gardens of Your Paradise,

wa as-aluka an tafukk `anne kulla halqatin

and I ask You to redeem me from all circles of misfortune

ذيني،ؤ ين م

نيبني وي bayny wa bayna man yu´dhene ب

that are drawn around those who intend harm to me and me,

حتفت ,wa taftaha le kull babin and to unlock for me all doors و

، ب ع ص ل كله تلنيه

,wa tulayyna le kulla Sa`bin and make easy for me all hardships و

ل ل هه تس،و سري

ع wa tusahhila le kulla `aserin كلهand to alleviate for me all difficult matters,

، ه ناطق بش نهي كله

عرستخ و

wa tukhrisa `anne kull natiqin bisharrin

and to mute all those who speak ill of me,

، اغ ب نهي كله

ع كفهت wa takuffa `anne kulla baghin و

and to defend me against all oppressors,

ه ل دو ع نهي كله

عبتكتو

، اسد ح و

wa takbita `anne kulla `aduwwin le wa hasidin

and suppress all my enemies and envious ones,

، ظالم منهي كلهعنمت wa tamna`a minny kulla zalimin و

and to protect me against all unjust ones,

ول حائق ي ع ني كله

wa takfiyany kulla `a’iqin yahulu bayny wa bayna hajaty

and to rescue me from all impediments that lie between my needs and me,

و

نيبني وي بق هفر ياول أن

wa yuhawilu an yufarriqa bayny wa bayna ta`atika

and that try to take me away from acts of obedience to You,

تك اد عبنهطني ع

ثبي wa yuthabbitany `an `ibadatika .و

and that try to frustrate me from serving You.

ya man aljama aljinna almutamarridena

O He Who has bridled all mutinous jinn,

اطني،ي اة الشه

ت عرقه wa qahara `utata alshshayateni و

and has overcome all tyrannical devils,

،ين به جتم ال رقاب أذله

وwa adhalla riqaba almutajabbirena

and has mortified the necks of the oppressors,

ن لهطني ع

تسمد ال كي ده رو

فني،عضستم ال

wa radda kayda almutasallitena `ani almustaz`afena

and has deterred all the ruling authorities from harming the enfeebled ones:

as-aluka biqudratika `ala ma tasha‘u

I beseech You in the name of Your power over all things

ف تشاء

كيا تشاء

تسهيلك لم

و

wa tashelika lima tasha‘u kayfa tasha‘u

and in the name of Your alleviating whatever You will however You will

ا تي فيم

عج تأن

.تشاء

an taj`ala qaza‘a hajaty fema tasha‘u

that You may settle my requests as You will.

You may then prostrate yourself on the ground, turn your cheek on the ground, and say the following:

ت،دج لك س allahumma laka sajadtu اللههه

O Allah: I am prostrating myself before You,

،تنبك آم

,wa bika amantu and I have full faith in You و

فاقتيم ذله و

ح farham dhully wa faqaty فار

So, (please) have mercy upon my humility and neediness,

عي هضرتادي و

تاج wajtihady wa tazarru`y و

and upon my hardship and meekness,

به ا رك يري إلي

فقتي وسكن

م .و

wa maskanaty wa faqry ilayka ya rabbi

and upon my paucity and my want to You, O my Lord.

One should try to shed even a single drop of tear, for this is the signal of admission.
