GEORGIA COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS

DIVISION PROFILE Georgia Council for the Arts (GCA) empowers the arts industry in Georgia and artists around the state to cultivate healthy, vibrant communities that are rich in civic participation, cultural experiences and economic prosperity. As a division of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, Georgia Council for the Arts provides grant funding, programs and services statewide that support this vital industry, preserve our cultural heritage and create increased access to high quality arts experiences.

QUARTERLY DIVISION HIGHLIGHTS 1. GCA and GPEE Partner to Host Arts Education Critical Issues ForumIn April, GCA and the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education (GPEE) co-hosted a Critical Issues Forum focused on Arts Learning and the Innovation Workforce at the Georgia Film Academy in Fayetteville, GA. The keynote presentation featured Rodney Sampson, Partner and Head of Diversity & Inclusion Initiatives at TechSquare Labs, in conversation with Martha Dalton, Education Reporter, at WABE 90.1 FM. The keynote presentation was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Atiba Mbiwan, Associate Director at The Zeist Foundation, with Jeff Stepakoff, Executive Director of the Georgia Film Academy, Syreea Hughley, Learning Center Manager at Google Fiber, and Gif Lockley, Principal at Savannah Arts Academy.

2. 2017 Poet Laureate PrizeLaunched in 2014 by Judson Mitcham, the state’s poet laureate, and GCA, the Georgia Poet Laureate’s Prize is awarded for an original poem written by a Georgia high school student. This annual program is designed to encourage students in grades 9 through 12 to write original poems and to engage in the unique art form of poetry. The winner and four finalists who were selected by Judson Mitcham were honored by Governor Deal, First Lady Sandra Deal, and the Poet Laureate at the Georgia State Capitol on May 2.

3. Create Georgia: Shaping the Future of the Arts in GAIn the Spring GCA began work on our new strategic plan, a document that will serve as a relevant and inspirational guidepost to carry our work in support of the arts forward through the next five years. In partnership with Georgia Municipal Association we invited community members to join us for a series of regional conversations to inform that plan and share their vision for how we best harness the power and potential of the arts in Georgia to build strong, vibrant communities. Participation was sought from a wide and diverse set of backgrounds, experiences, expertise and participation levels. Approximately 140 individuals ranging from artists to Mayors joined us for these discussions in Gainesville, Dublin, LaGrange and Atlanta. An additional 700 individuals responded to our Create Georgia public input survey. All feedback will be analyzed and inform our goals, strategies and priorities for the coming years. The new plan will be published in January 2018.

UPCOMING EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES• SAVE THE DATE: 2017 Governor’s Awards for the Arts & Humanities, October 3rd, 2017 @ 11AM, Georgia State CapitolThe Governor’s Awards for the Arts and Humanities honor outstanding individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to Georgia’s civic and cultural vitality through excellence and service to the arts and humanities. Presented by the Office of the Governor in partnership with Georgia Council for the Arts and Georgia Humanities, the Governor’s Awards recognize the value of the arts and humanities in the creation of a thriving economy and their contributions to education, innovation, growth and quality of life.

• “Inspired Georgia” Traveling Photo ExhibitThe 40 photographs included in GCA’s recent publication, “Inspired Georgia”, will tour the state in 2017 and 2018. Each venue will serve as a host for these remarkable images, along with literary events celebrating local poets in each region of the state. Communities hosting the exhibit include: Zebulon, Milledgeville, Rome, Vidalia, Statesboro and Albany. Opening dates and program details are available on the GCA website.

DIVISION PROFILE Exclusive to Georgia, the Centers of Innovation provide the technical expertise, collaborative research, and partnership opportunities to help Georgia’s strategic industries connect, compete and grow.

QUARTERLY DIVISION HIGHLIGHTS1. The Georgia Logistics Summit on May 16-17 at the Georgia World Congress

Center was a fantastic success with over 1,400 people registered and almost 1,200 attending the great panels and breakout sessions as well as an address by Gov. Nathan Deal. Speakers represented a wide sample of industry and key economic development partners including: UPS, The Home Depot, Georgia Power, C.H. Robinson, Deloitte, Walmart, Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, Georgia Ports Authority, Georgia Department of Transportation, and Kia. The event was keynoted by Sandra MacQuillan, Chief Supply Chain Officer, Kimberly-Clark Corporation. COI staff were able to recruit 17 different reporters to the Georgia Logistics Summit.

2. The Suppliers Opportunities & Aerospace Resources (SOAR) Conference on April 19-20 in Macon was a big success with nearly 200 attendees and over 100 companies participating. Georgia aerospace companies connected to potential business partners and collaborators, in more than 130 one-on-one “Fast Pitch” sessions with major international aerospace OEMs, and attended development sessions to build skills to grow their businesses. SOAR 2017 was jointly presented by the Center of Innovation for Aerospace, GDEcD, Georgia Tech Manufacturing Extension Partnership (GaMEP), Macon Economic Development Commission, Georgia Tech Procurement Assistance Center (GTPAC), University of Georgia Small Business Development Center (GaSBDC), Georgia Power, the Guard Initiative, and the National Defense Industry Association (NDIA).

3. USDA Value Added Producer Grant Workshop on April 10th helped give 125 agricultural producers the resources and knowledge to enter into value-added activities related to the processing and/or marketing of bio-based, value-added products. This annual free workshop presented by USDA Rural Development, The University of Georgia’s Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development, and Center of Innovation for Agribusiness has significant impact with $7M in grant wins by producers last year.

4. The Center of Innovation for Energy Technology assisted American Process, which operates a bio-refinery in Thomaston, Ga (Upson County), in efforts that resulted in a $3.7 M grant from the US Department of Energy to develop a Pilot and Demonstration Scale Manufacturing of Biofuels and Bioproducts. The second Phase of the grant, which includes manufacturing and operations, is estimated to be $42M.

5. The Center of Innovation for Aerospace connected the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) to a Georgia-based company for the teaming on a proposal that would create an electronic test system. GTRI was awarded the contract resulting in nearly a $650,000 award.

6. A team consisting of COI Executive Director Steve Justice, COI Agribusiness Senior Project Manager Roderick Gilbert, GDEcD International Trade’s Priya Verma, and GDEcD Regional Project Manager Tina Herring visited ESCOGO in Monroe to learn about the progress on their current COI Innovation Grant project with UGA and expansion plans. The COI grant with UGA has resulted in a new patent which will support ESCOGO’s move into a new product and other markets with support from Trade and Global Commerce. Also, the Center of Innovation for Manufacturing followed up with the company to Identify four potential Georgia companies who could serve as contract fillers for ESCOGO’s smarter starter fluid product and the Center of Innovation for Logistics is now engaged to find better logistics solutions for the company. This is extremely effective GDEcD team response to support a growing Georgia company!

7. The Center of Innovation for Logistics assisted in the response to I-85 bridge collapse, including evaluating traffic data, surveying logistics providers and shippers for impacts to supply chains, crafting messages, and publishing info on the Center’s mass emailing list.

8. COI Manufacturing and COI Aerospace are working with the Georgia Manufacturing Extension Partnership to co-sponsor a half day event on Cybersecurity in August 2017 to educate and assist manufacturers as they work to adhere to the DFARS requirement based on NIST 800-171. Effective 12/31/2017, companies bidding on a DoD contract will need to follow this standard, which focuses on safeguarding controlled technical information and reporting of certain cybersecurity incidents.

9. LivFul (formerly Clean Off), a company Center of Innovation for IT and Center of Innovation for Manufacturing has worked with, is launching their new product in the Bahamas this month. LivFul is an early stage biotech company specializing in extended release technology for applying repellents and other products. If successful LivFul could add manufacturing capability in Georgia long term. Livful also exhibited with GDEcD at the annual BIO Conference in San Diego in June.

10. Center of Innovation for IT is working with Baker Donelson and the Metro Atlanta Chamber on Atlanta Cyber Week in October to focus attention on this growing sector and culminates in a series of events and meeting the first week of October.

11. Center of Innovation for Energy presented to a group of 11 international government energy policy executives at the request of the US Department of State on “Building energy ecosystems to drive economic development.

UPCOMING EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES• Invest Augusta Conference September 28th – Center of Innovation for IT will be a sponsor at this year’s Invest Augusta

conference which helps develop and promote entrepreneurship in the greater Augusta area.

• Space Science & Innovation Symposium on October 18 & 19, 2017 – COI Aerospace and the Georgia Tech Center for Space Technology & Research are hosting a one-day symposium at the Georgia Tech Global Learning Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

• Georgia Drone Summit on October 20-21, 2017 at UGA – A collaboration between COI Aerospace and the University of Georgia to highlight the growing unmanned vehicle industry in Georgia.

FILM, MUSIC AND DIGITAL ENTERTAINMENT

DIVISION PROFILE The Georgia Film, Music & Digital Entertainment Office develops the state’s film, television, & commercial production industries by marketing the state to production companies; location scouting; and coordinating the filming needs of companies with other state agencies, local governments, and citizens. The office actively works to develop the industry’s infrastructure and workforce, certifies projects under the Georgia Entertainment Industry Investment Act, and oversees the Camera Ready community program to engage municipalities throughout Georgia.

QUARTERLY DIVISION HIGHLIGHTS1. Georgia-lensed feature films and television productions generated a direct

spend of $2.7 billion during fiscal year 2017 (July 1, 2016 – June 30, 2017). The 320 feature film and television productions that shot in Georgia created a total economic impact of $9.5 billion.

2. According to the most recent figures from the Motion Picture Association of America, the motion picture and television industry is responsible for more than 92,100 jobs and nearly $4.6B in total wages in Georgia, including indirect jobs and wages. MPAA member companies alone paid $775M to 6,648 vendors in Georgia in 2016. These local businesses include technology, lodging, real estate and transportation. Since 2012, MPAA members have paid on average $748M per year to local vendors.

3. The Georgia-lensed film Baby Driver directed by Edgar Wright was released on June 23, and has earned well over $100 million. The film, which stars Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx and Ansel Elgort, was re-written for Atlanta.

DIVISION PROFILE The Global Commerce team seeks to increase jobs and investment through locating and

expanding businesses, as well as growing small businesses. The Global Commerce team

includes statewide and existing industry project teams, small business, and Georgia’s

international representatives in 11 strategic regions around the world.

1. Red Carpet Tour – April 2017

a. Hosted 29 business leaders from active projects, recent locations and key existing

industries for this four-day event. In addition to attending the Masters Tournament,

a. Governor Deal hosted a week-long mission to Japan, where members of the Global

Commerce team called on many existing industries and active projects throughout

the country.

and the Propeller Club of the United States - Port of Savannah, will be held at the

• September 19 – Global Commerce Numbers Announcement event will take place at the offices of Honeywell’s new Atlanta

location. Governor Deal will be on hand to reveal the FY17 results and celebrate this year’s successes.

• October 25 – Marukan Vinegar will hold a Grand Opening ceremony for their manufacturing facility in Griffin.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

DIVISION PROFILE Georgia’s International Relations team is committed to growing Georgia’s reputation as a welcoming and vibrant state for international business and tourists by strategically cultivating and expanding Georgia’s international relationships. The office oversees communications and activities with foreign governments and is the state’s liaison to members of the Consular Corps. The division also manages the Governor’s trade and investment missions, welcomes international delegations and dignitaries, provides community outreach and education opportunities, and coordinates international efforts among state departments and agencies.

QUARTERLY DIVISION HIGHLIGHTS1. Governor Deal Visits Korea and Japan

Governor Deal and Commissioner Wilson traveled on Delta’s inaugural flight to Seoul on June 4. After meeting with leadership from Kia in Korea, they continued on to Japan, where they connected with Mrs. Deal and a delegation. The group met with prospective investors, paid “thank you” calls on companies already located in Georgia, and hosted a reception in Tokyo to demonstrate Georgia’s appreciation for our 500 Japanese companies employing nearly 30,000 Georgians.

2. Spotlight on Canada June was a busy month for Georgia-Canada relations: the Canadian Ambassador to the U.S., His Excellency David McNaughton, visited Atlanta, followed closely by The Honorable Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario. Both parties were interested in discussing the future of the U.S.-Canadian trade relationship. June also marked the 10th anniversary of the SEUS-Canada conference in Toronto. Georgia was a founding member of this dynamic trade alliance.

3. Ambassadors flocking to visit Georgia this spring GDEcD and the Governor’s office welcomed Ambassadors from Canada, Greece, Slovenia, Czech Republic, and the Republic of Georgia, as well as the Taiwanese Representative to the U.S. Other visitors welcomed included the His Excellency Juan Varela, President of Panama; Mexico’s Undersecretary for Foreign Relations; and a delegation of Korean cities and municipalities.

DIVISION PROFILE GDEcD’s nationally recognized International Trade Division works to bolster Georgia

exports and brand the state as a competitive source of quality products and services.

The division includes International Representatives located in 11 strategic global markets,

and assists Georgia companies to expand their sales worldwide. The Trade division

provides Georgia businesses with the Global Insight and Global Connections they need to

successfully diversify their international customer base.

QUARTERLY DIVISION HIGHLIGHTS1. LAAD Defense & Security Expo

April 4-7, 2017; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil In April, 10 Georgia companies, including four co-exhibitors, participated with GDEcD at LAAD, Latin America’s largest defense and security tradeshow. The event attracts more than 37,000 military and civilian buyers from 41 countries, and has generated millions of dollars in business for Georgia exporters since 2015. The state’s defense and security exports have grown by 42% in the past decade, and Latin America continues to be a growing market for Georgia exports.

2. Mexico Incoming Buyer Delegation June 23, 2017; Atlanta, Georgia In partnership with the Southern U.S. Trade Association (SUSTA), GDEcD welcomed a delegation of Mexican retail and food service buyers in June. The buyers met with 11 Georgia food companies in Atlanta, then attended the Fancy Food tradeshow where they met with 4 additional Georgia exhibitors. Over the course of three business days, GDEcD and SUSTA coordinated 70 one-on-one business meetings for Georgia food exporters. Georgia exhibitors at Fancy Food also met with global food buyers from 5 countries around the world (Canada, China, EU, Japan, Mexico).

3. 10th Annual SEUS-Canada Conference June 4-6 2017; Toronto, Canada 2017 marks the 10th Anniversary of the SEUS-Canada Alliance. SEUS-Canada brings together six southeastern states and six Canadian provinces to promote

The trade division led a business delegation to the event, resulting in more than 31 business-to-business meetings in the sectors of automotive, clean technology and ICT. Canada has been Georgia’s largest export market for more than two decades, with annual exports of nearly $6 billion.

UPCOMING EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES• 40th Annual SEUS-Japan Conference

The 40th Annual Joint Meeting of the Japan-U.S. Southeast Association and Southeast U.S./ Japan Association will take place October 21-24th, 2017 in Greenville, South Carolina. This prestigious gathering of global business leaders celebrates longstanding economic and cultural ties and offers delegates the opportunity to meet key contacts and leverage international opportunities with one of Georgia’s top trade and investment partners. Georgia has been a part of SEUS-Japan since its founding in 1976. This will be the last joint meeting held stateside before Georgia serves as host for the 42nd annual meeting in 2019.

• New Trade Events in FY’18 A new fiscal year means a variety of new international events for Georgia’s business community. The trade team is rolling out a full calendar of events for FY’18 to spur Georgia exports in diverse industries. Upcoming highlights include the DSEI defense and security tradeshow in London; ANUGA in Cologne, Germany showcasing Georgia food companies; and MEDICA, the world’s largest medical technologies show in Dusseldorf, Germany. DIVISION PROFILE The Marketing & Communications division manages the agency’s reputation and promotes Georgia’s business, tourism, arts and entertainment assets throughout the state, U.S. and world. Through the creative integration of print, digital, social media, outdoor and broadcast channels, the division supports the department’s eight operating divisions. This includes new advertising campaigns, the creation of sales and marketing materials, digital advertising, all internal and external communications, media outreach, more than a dozen social media platforms across multiple divisions and the growth of the department’s nine targeted websites.

QUARTERLY DIVISION HIGHLIGHTS1. A new media program was rolled out through the Georgia Tourism Foundation.

Food Network Magazine is offering a first-ever program to the state: partners buying into the program will receive ads in two of the best-read issues of the publication and the opportunity to meet with top editors and travel operators in New York City. The ads will run nationwide – a first for any state co-op program.

2. Georgia Eats, the state’s official culinary guide, entered its third year of publication. Featuring award-winning food truck Holy Smokes BBQ as the cover image, the guide includes 100 Plates Locals Love, ten flavor tours, food festivals, favorite recipes from Georgia chefs and several feature articles. The guide grew in terms of size and distribution this year, and has garnered national and local media attention.

3. New GDEcD produced and released videos include a Global Trade video for International Trade, a German Investment video, a video highlighting the largest container ship to call on the East Coast at the Port of Savannah (garnered more than 70,000 views on Facebook), and a Delta direct flight to Seoul celebration.

4. Ten new GRAD (certified) site videos focusing on sites along the I-16 corridor were produced for Georgia InSite. The comprehensive videos include aerial drone footage of the site, nearby amenities, companies and infrastructure. Seven have already been completed for the Augusta area. New videos are currently in production for the Tifton and Albany areas. The videos can be viewed at Insite.Georgia.org.

5. In July, after a 9-month long RFP process, an award for a GDEcD interactive agency-of-record was made to Miles Partnership. Miles had served the department for the past five years. Awards are typically made for five-year terms with each year renewable before a new RFP must be issued.

6. Eleven new small business case studies were produced and published on Georgia.org. The case studies looked at a sampling of small business owners across the state in a variety of business sectors that included Richland Rum, Jittery Joe’s and Nine Line Apparel. The case studies were promoted though a targeted LinkedIn campaign and exceeded all benchmarks.

7. GeorgiaTradeFive.org will launch in late August. A completely new and user-friendly site has been developed along with new content representing dozens of positions in five business sectors. Replacing GoBuildGeorgia.com, the Workforce division microsite will sport a new logo, specific resources for job seekers and easy-to-use functionality.

8. The past quarter saw three newly developed print ads for Delta Sky. The two most recent focused on Georgia’s small businesses (July) and the bioscience industry (June) supporting the BIO tradeshow. The August issue focused on our European company successes.

9. Hosted 36 travel writers from April 20 – 23 for Georgia Tourism’s annual Travel Media Marketplace event. The writers

spent time in the host city of Cartersville before venturing out across the state on three familiarization tours through April 25.

UPCOMING EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES• Production is underway for a new series for the Workforce division - Great Georgia Jobs with Trust Dale Cardwell.

The series will air starting September 11 and will be broadcast in markets across the state.

• Currently in production, the Tourism division is sponsoring The Excursion with David Zelski, a new Georgia-focused travel show that will air on Fox Sports South. The show will feature David Zelski of GPB’s Georgia Traveler.

• On July 31, the Governor’s Office will announce the Georgia Defense Exchange. The new tool is a collaboration between Workforce, the Center of Innovation for Aerospace and Marketing & Communications that provides a one-stop-shop for Georgia companies seeking access and information on aerospace-related U.S. DoD contracts. The newly developed platform includes a user-friendly interface and specially created logo.

DIVISION PROFILE Georgia Tourism, through its network of regional and international representatives,Atlanta office, and 12 visitor information centers, assists the state’s communitiesand attractions in drawing potential travelers to their areas, and helps individualvisitors and groups discover Georgia’s unique vacation options. The Division alsohelps communities develop well-planned and sustainable tourism products.

QUARTERLY DIVISION HIGHLIGHTS 1. On May 9, during National Tourism Week, the Tourism division announced that

the state’s tourism industry generated a record-breaking $61.1 billion in business sales including direct, indirect and induced impact in 2016, up 3.5 percent, according to the U.S. Travel Association and Tourism Economics.

2. Georgia Tourism hosted Travel Media Marketplace April 20 – 25 in Cartersville. The event welcomed 30 journalists from across the U.S. and Canada and included pre tours in Cartersville and three post tours themed around Hollywood Comes to Georgia, Southern Charm and Land of Sights and Legends.

3. On May 1, the Tourism division celebrated the inaugural flight for Air Canada’s new service from Toronto – marking the beginning of daily seasonal air service from May 1 to Oct. 15 at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.

4. Deputy Commissioner of Tourism Kevin Langston, Deputy Commissioner of Film Lee Thomas and Sr. Communications Specialist Emily Murray conducted four drive market media blitzes to Birmingham, Greenville/Spartanburg, Tampa/Jacksonville and Nashville/Chattanooga. The team met with local freelance writers, conducted television interviews, radio interviews and desk side meetings with local papers and magazines.

5. Director for Greater China Region Initiatives Stella Xu and Deputy Commissioner Kevin Langston attended the ITB China from May 10 through May 12 in Shanghai, China. This is the first time that ITB is hosting the show in China which will be exclusively focused on the Chinese travel market. The three-day-event gathered

international destinations, services, and travel technology providers connecting with 600 Chinese buyers. Georgia conducted 50 one-on-one appointments with Chinese tour operators during the show.

6. The fourth annual Georgia On My Mind benefit concert was held on May 19 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. The Georgia On My Mind – concert and sales mission – was attended by Governor Nathan Deal where he received the Flame Award for his contributions to Georgia’s music.

7. Deputy Commissioner of Tourism Kevin Langston, Director of Business Development and International Accounts Tracy Vaughan, Project Manager Jassy Ji and Senior Communications Specialist Emily Murray attended IPW, the travel industry’s premier international marketplace, June 3-7 in Washington, DC. The sales team met with 129 international tour operators and 20 international journalists. Partners that attended the booth include Visit Savannah, Golden Isles, Kelly Tours, ATL Airport District, Discover DeKalb, and Explore Gwinnett.

8. Kevin Langston, Deputy Commissioner of Tourism and Tracy Vaughan Director of Business Development and International Accounts attended the Travel South Australia and New Zealand Sales Mission June 19 – 22. The mission included 4 events that welcomed nearly 100 tour operators and media to each event.

9. During the week of June 12-16, the Tourism division hosted 6 freelance writers on a media FAM tour that focused on highlighting the state’s film tourism sites. The tour visited Atlanta, Senoia, Peachtree City, Covington, Savannah and Tybee Island.

10. On June 19-23, the Explore Georgia social media team hosted six social media influencers to experience the southern charm and elevated style of Madison and Greensboro. The FAM reached an estimated 1.5 million people with an ROI of $48,000. One influencer was regrammed by Southern Living Magazine to a following of almost 1 million people.

11. The Tourism Product Development team conducted intensive Resource Team visits to Toccoa, Kingsland, Gordon County and Dublin during the quarter.

DIVISION PROFILE The Georgia Department of Economic Development’s Workforce Division (WFD) administers the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) under the leadership of the State Workforce Development Board with the ultimate goal of improving the quality and marketability of Georgia’s workforce to meet the needs of business.

QUARTERLY DIVISION HIGHLIGHTS 1. Launch of HDCI Construction Task Force

The HDCI team launched its fifth industry-specific task force to address acute workforce shortages in Georgia’s construction industry. The HDCI Construction Task Force is comprised of more than 120 employers, educators and industry experts who are committed to securing a strong workforce to meet the needs of business in Georgia’s thriving construction industry.

2. GDEcD Prepares to Launch Great Georgia Jobs Television Series The Workforce division is partnering with Trust Dale TV to produce a four-episode television series titled Great Georgia Jobs. This series will feature success stories and will highlight employment-driven resources made available through Georgia’s workforce system. The series will air in every region throughout the state beginning in mid-September.

3. WFD Awards HDCI Sector Partnership Grants In May, the Workforce division awarded grants to six regions as part of the HDCI Sector Partnership Grant program. Each of Georgia’s twelve Economic Development Regions submitted competitive applications. In this first round of grants, nearly $1.6 million in grants were awarded. This program is designed to support the development of regional sector partnerships that will work to understand and act on the needs of key regional industries. There will be a second round of grants that will be available to the remaining six regions, and those grant funds will be awarded on October 1st.
