Inputs
What if these inputs could manifest to an architecture in a
Post Scarcity Society where people no longer need designers and
architects. They can automatically generate architecture from their lifestyles or data that they had
uploaded online.
Dreamhouse Design Diarypage 5
Personal Dream Residences
My main question for my thesis is, can you design a persons dream residence by digital clues? What
would happen if a person wanted to design a property in a post-scarcity
environment? Can we develop a "programme" or software that will
eventually replace the architect and manipulate the outcome like a puppeteer and a string puppet.
I want to look into the issues surrounding residential design and
the role of the architect, what if we replace the architect with this software, would people be pleased with the outcome, how would it
vary from a design from a "proper" architect?
Dreamhouse Design Diarypage 7
App Design
My initial idea was to create an app that anyone could use to create an architecture. All you would need to
do was take photos of things that in-terested you and upload them. (like a scrap book). This app would then generate an "ideal" solution for you that would incorporate your choices.
These choices will be fed into a resource library that held a number
of options linking the images to a number of different choices. These
choices will then be used to generate the architecture.
After a discussion with the tutors last week I then decided to modify this. The app will only be used to
create residential spaces. There will be a number of preset variables and
this will be set by the user. I plan to test this using peoples footprint on their social media profiles. This leads to the question, can your so-cial media profile be used to design your dream home? What would an area filled with these sort of houses look like? In this landscape there are
no rules.
Dreamhouse Design Diarypage 9
Connected inputs and their influence on design
Will the design process reflect an automated factory? Where you
‘download” information on your life and generate an architecture.
Will architecture then become a collage of your life, present, past and
future?
Dreamhouse Design Diarypage 11
Bringing the Residence to life?(using projections)
This diagram was showing how the houses will be created from
conception to realisation.
The different stages will reduce the need for an architect.
People in Post Scarcity societies will be able to create their own houses and manipulate and change them
without the need of architect as it is in the current society.
This was looking at ideas of projections being used to create a different environment for living.

Site Location, Canvey Island Essex
There are a number of aspects of Canvey Island that have caught
my attention. The Houses all seem to be built at different times and different styles. They have a
level of isolation associated to the island. Transportation is difficult. The politics of the are is another aspect that caught my attention. Its almost as if they have a high level of independence. The other
interesting factor was the fact that they are trying to bridge the gap
with a development called the ‘road to nowhere’
Dreamhouse Design Diarypage 15
Connecting the dots
What happens when everyone starts to upload their personal information
on the island?
I would like to see what type of architecture would be geenrated from the ‘post-scarctiy’ housing
schemes in Canvey Island.

The Environment Bubble
Living in a cocoon could be a post scarcity lifestyle choice. It allows for nomadic living. One of the limiting
factors of housing in C21 is the “permanence” of housing.
I am interested in how this will stunt or improve social interactions
and cultural exchanges.

“Memory is a fleeting thing, often constructed with fragments of
objects and places in a nonsensical arrangement in the mind. Golden Age - Simulation attempts to visualise this development of memory from the very abstract to the construction of whole

Looking at how buildings will be constructed with the coming advances
of technology, especially in a post-scarcity society where resources are
unlimited.

Dreamhouse Design Diarypage 23
Broadacre City by Frank Lloyd Wright
“Imagine spacious landscaped highways …giant roads, themselves
great architecture, pass public service stations, no longer eyesores,
expanded to include all kinds of service and comfort. They unite
and separate — separate and unite the series of diversified units, the farm units, the factory units, the roadside markets, the garden schools, the dwelling places (each
on its acre of individually adorned and cultivated ground), the places
for pleasure and leisure. All of these units so arranged and so integrated
that each citizen of the future will have all forms of production,
distribution, self improvement, enjoyment, within a radius of a
hundred and fifty miles of his home now easily and speedily available by means of his car or plane. This integral whole composes the great city that I see embracing all of this
country—the Broadacre City of tomorrow.”
Dreamhouse Design Diarypage 25
Concept Architectural Buildings
“The CG Society organized a contest that invited digital artists from
around the globe to present their most imaginative and grandest
futuristic vision for the new world through architecture and
landscape design. The end results were amazingly impressive and
immeasurable to what we normally see on a daily basis.”

Fade from Black
Film Draft One
The main message I was trying to get across with this film was the difference between the current present day and the homes of a
post-scarcity society.
It explores the idea of changing your environment using a digital
platform and then physically exploiting your surroundings. It also
highlights the differences between the ‘dreamstate’ and the reality. The
augmentation occurs during the transition to the ‘dreamstate’. You are able to explore your deepest
desires and it can even surprise you and bring out an aspect of your creativity that you didn’t explore
previously.

See the Future: Real 3D Digital Building Holograms
“Patented advances in lasers, optics and image processing are incorporated into Zebra’s innovative process to produce holographic imagery from 3D data sets. Raw data sources of any kind, such as CAD models, laser scans and satellite imagery are used to product the final holographic image. Each hardcopy digi-tal hologram is composed of thousands of high fidelity rendered still images. The images are encoded into a “hogel” (the equivalent of a holographic pixel) on photopolymer film with a proprietary optical process. The result is a portable film based hologram that can be viewed in direct sunlight or with a simple halo-gen or LED light source.”
The image shows the way in which a number of objects can be used to translate to your dream residence.
You can see the way the dream correlates to the reality.

Hologram Architectural Projections
“A short set of conceptual drawings set in a decaying London exploring
the idea of a retrofitted architec-tural/technological infrastructure
capable of defining space solely through projected light, using
holography.
Such a technology is not current-ly feasible, but these drawings
explore the potential for flexible/autonomously controlled spaces to be created and inserted amidst the existing urban environment should
it ever become so.Did these in the first few days of my final master’s year, i had just returned from Japan the previous
summer, perhaps the neon was burnt into my imagination.”

Selection of Six Case Studies
Looking at historical Mapping and understanding the significance of
each of the sites.
They are all connected by the largest case study site, THE WALL
Not only is this significant in the idea of keep Canvey Island free
from flooding and it also forms a defence mechanism which relates
back to the historical context of the site.
One Dutchman built the Canvey Island we see today. The photographs highlight the first
case study site, Field 10, where the project is based.

This site is where the ‘permanent mobile homes’ are situated. It is an odd site sandwiched between
Thorney Bay(a site of intense natural beauty) and a disused oil
refinery.
CASE STUDY TWO
BOAT CLUB AND MARSHES
This is a site that highlights the idea of movement around Thames
Estuary and having a building set on “non-land”. Land that is
constantly changing and eroding. Can a permanent building be set
in such a situation?
Dreamhouse Design Diarypage 45
CASE STUDY THREE
THE WALL
The wall runs the entire length of Canvey Island and acts as a defence
barrier to the Thames Estuary during times of Flooding
CASE STUDY FOUR
FANTASY ISLAND AND THE POOL
Disused amusements and a children’s natural paddling pool are the main features of this site. The
road from the main junction leads directly here.

THORNEY BAY
Beautiful disused bay. It has a number of interesting natural
features including a garden and sandy shores.
CASE STUDY SIX
CANVEY TERMINAL AND RE-FINERY
The disused refinery is the main feature of this site. It has an eerie feel and the vast amount of space
used here gives and indication of the forgotten.

“NOTHING IS ORIGINAL: STEAL FROM ANYWHERE”
“...that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. “ Jim Jarmusch
Strange Street

“Inside Out” by Coffey Architecture has a concrete base with brightly colored wooden pieces that slide in and transform the plain structure into something special
“Compass House” by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris is distinctly modern with its white, boxy structure and vibrant green accents.
“Electra House” by Adjaye Associates has a playful energy with folding walls and skylights.
“Haptic House” by Dexter Moren uses stacked boxes to create a plethora of tiny rooms in this unique dollhouse design.
“mae-mak house” by Mae in associate with MAKLab and Burro Happold is a truly interactive experience with many flat pieces creating a full dollhouse and then folding down into a flat carrying case.
“Puzzle House” by Studio Egret West in association with Andrew Logan is also modular, with stacked boxes creating the house and then nestling within one another to create a snug rectangular box.
“A dolls’ house made of three-sided rooms” by Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands has a title that largely describes its look, box rooms stacked high.
This untitled funky pirate tower comes from Morag Myerscough & Luke Morgan in association with artists Ishbel Myerscough, Chantal Joffe and poet Lemn Sissay.
Dollhouses Designed by Star Architects
When we think about what we can do as a society to help disabled children, research, education, and
healthcare all come to mind. But one of the issues that faces all disabled
children and their families is finding an affordable and accessible
place to live. In the UK, the Kids organization aims to help disabled children and their families in every facet of their lives, which is why this
November they will auction off a series of dollhouses, designed and
created by some of the top architects in the UK, to raise funds and bring
attention to the critical need for accessible housing.

“The Mobius strip--the common sense-defying continuous loop with only one side and one edge, made famous by the illustrations of M. C. Escher-leads us to some of the strangest spots imaginable. It takes us to a place where the purely intellectual enters our daily world: where our outraged senses, overloaded as they are with grocery bills, the price of gas, and what to eat for lunch, are expected to absorb truly bizarre ideas. And no better guide to our weird universe exists than the brilliant thinker Clifford A. Pickover, the twenty-first century’s
answer to Buckminster Fuller.”

Dreamhouses can have a projected locale. This enables you to live and breathe that environment. Dreams

“An inexpensive and highly accurate “spintronic” magnetic field sensor
developed at the University of Utah is shown here. The entire device, on a printed circuit board, measures
about 0.8 inches by 1.2 inches. But the part that actually detects
magnetic fields is the reddish-orange thin-film semiconductor –
essentially “plastic paint” – near the center-right of the device.”
This device is used to create sculptural elements that are capable

Dreamhouse Design Diarypage 97
Sensor Based on Organic Spintronics
The sensors are based on a field of science named spintronics, in which data is stored both electronically in the electrical charges of electrons or atomic nuclei and in what is known
as the “spin” of those subatomic particles.
Described simply, spin makes a particle behave like a tiny bar
magnet that is pointed up or down within an electron or a nucleus. Down can represent 0 and up
and represent 1, similar to how in electronics no charge represents
0 and a charge represents 1. Spintronics allows more information – spin and charge – to be used than electronics, which just uses charge.
Dreamhouse Design Diarypage 99
views of Field 10, Canvey IslandProjected from the manipulation of
deramhouse
dreamhouse is forced to pick a number of virtual cues from reality. It allows you to walk through from the kitchen to a high street you visited yesterday.
The overlap between internal and external is difficult to define. It allows aspects of the external world to come into the home and vice versa. This is actually brought in by the mind rather than physical growth in the two realms.
The Ecology of Dreamhouse
A lost reality
“An external reality: The reality which we experience through our senses, what we see, hear, smell,
taste and sense.
An internal reality: Our experiences beyond the senses, what we think,
feel, believe, etc.
In the realm of the external reality, we can, and constantly do expect a rather wide common ground
of agreement with other human beings. In relation to the internal
reality it is relatively objective.
In the realm of internal reality we expect much less agreement
(although more than we can ever find), in relation to the external
reality it is more subjective.
Architecture is here reduced to “a mean of communication” for
symbols and metaphors. It is then a reasonable recommendation to
throw as much as possible into the “mix”, hoping that
something will be “understood”. “

The dream bathroom reflects me as a person. I use the bathroom as a cleanser, which is demonstrated in
the tap. The mirror with an abstract reflection leads to the idea that what I see in the mirror on a daily basis
is volatile like the volcanic eruption that can be seen. Reflection does not necessarily show the surroundings even though that is what we are
lead to believe. There is a lot more to spaces than what we can necessarily
“see”.

Falling through the bedframe and clouds leads to the idea that sleep
is a transition-ary state. It becomes a gateway to dreamhouse. Even though we are now accustomed to the (often political, social and
economic) invisible boxes placed on us by society when we sleep we are
free from these and it is expressed in our dreams.

The hallway becomes a row of vistas with an end destination. They tempt and interest you but which will you
pick? What if there is a floating hallway and the doorway becomes a picture frame, the beginning of a new narrative. You are free to enter
and begin your own story..

This image represents heat and the warmth emulated from a kitchen when cooking. The door reflects a number of cultural connotations;
we like to shut the door when cooking as it allows the smells to be contained as well as allowing the cook to “present” the finished
meal. The silver spoon is a reflection of dual nationality and the dual
function of the “permanent mobile” homes as seen on Field 10 on
Canvey Island.

Why climb up a staircase when you can float? The ornamented staircase
shown is taken from Buckingham Palace, it gives the idea that you are the Regent of your dreams. You can
limit how expressive and creative your dreamscapes are. It becomes
a chance for you to express yourself in the deepest sense. Staircases are
traditionally used for ascending and descending but this function is not necessary in a dream, you can just
transition from one space to another. The balloon signifies the implied creativity and imagination. It is
often very fragile and easily deflated. But it also has potential to move the user to another space just like
dreams.

Teeth represent the physical act of eating. The images leading to the
tongue actually highlight the sources of food in Canvey Island in a Post
Scarcity Society. People will begin to create food using the raw materials,
what will this do to the food production industry and the way we participate in the activity of eating.

The rug overlay is a way of bringing all the aspects of the living area
together. The window highlights the fact that this is a momentary space.
It gives a sense of closeness while exposing the openness of the living room. The framed family photo is
to represent the memories as stored in a family living room. The smiling face is to represent the laughter and joy felt when meeting with friends and family in a living space. It is a space that is connected to the resident in an emotional way.

Landscape
As previously discussed the surroundings of a house can add to the dreamlike qualities of a space. It is interesting because it gives a
sense of tranquillity. The glass ball represents the idea of choice and
free will. It allows the visitor to set their own environment.
The pool also represents an idea of tranquilly. The background image
is actually a photograph of Thorney Bay.

Wardrobe
This space is of special interest to me. I am proposing that people no longer need to keep a wardrobe full of clothing but rather manufacture clothing themselves. I think this fits
into the idea of Individualism as shown in the Historical Background
of Canvey Island.
The mannequins represent a sense of unknown creation of clothing.
You then become the mannequin in the Post Scarcity lifestyle. Everyone becomes a model of their deepest
desires.
The sewing machines represent the ‘luxury’ of creating an item of
clothing.
The different environments become a reflection of the persons desires and influences the clothing they
create and live in.

I was interested in seeing how reflections, environment and
random objects of memory affect the clothing of residents in a Post
Scarcity society.

Dreamhouse Levels Diagram
Each level corresponds to the other and builds upon it.
The site is level one, a level based solely in reality.
The final level is 5 where the user interacts with all the spaces in their
dreamhouse.
The spaces merge and become a collective, this mirrors the functions of different rooms in a house. They
all are separate but necessary together. They exist in a co-
dependency and this creates a living environment.

form of planning.”

The Virtual as a Reflection of the Subconscious
“The subconscious mind:Think of the subconscious mind as the storage room of everything that is currently not in your conscious
mind.
The subconscious mind stores all of your previous life experiences, your
beliefs, your memories, you skills, all situations you’ve been through and
all images you’ve ever seen.
The best way to understand the subconscious mind is to look at the example of the person who
wants to learn how to drive a car. At the beginning he wouldn’t be able to hold a conversation with
anyone while driving as he would be focusing on the different moves involved. That’s because he’s still
using his conscious mind to drive.”

Overlap of Dreamhouse Levels
Although all levels are important in their own right together they create a perfect living environment for the
user.
The revolving system acts as a framed view for the user as seen in
the proposed film.
