Dragon child

By Laura A 6p

Chapter 1:

I smiled at my best friend, Megan. She had just started a food fight in our cafeteria at school. Me, being the smart one, dodged all the food thrown

at me and had estimated the safest place to sit in the room. Surprisingly enough that was the middle of the room.

I took out my sandwich and began to eat, ignoring the commotion around me. I noticed Jenny looking at me; she was the second smartest in my class, she came over and sat on the floor next to me.

“Nice move,” she commented.

“Thanks,” I manoeuvred my packet of chips in her direction. “Want some?” I asked. “Sure.” She picked out a few chips and ate them.

I just noticed the sudden silence in the room and looked up. The other kids were looking at us with evil smiles. What-oh… we’re the only clean kids here.

I nudged Jenny and nodded at Megan. My best friend was really popular at school and usually got her way.

We smiled evilly at each other, seeing a chance to escape. Megan was reasonly clean too, because no one would dare throw anything at her.

We ran to her and hid behind her back. She took the full force of a bunch of pizzas and turkey and cupcakes thrown at her.

Page 3: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

Me and Jenna high fived and separated, high tailing it to the library.

We hid behind a shelf.

“We make a good team together.” Jenna said. “I was thinking the same thing.” I agreed.

A crackling buzz came from one of the school speakers in the library.

“Can every boy and girl please assemble in the great hall? Thankyou.” Uh-oh, what now?

Jenna and I shared a look.

“Let’s go then.”

We joined a mob of children going to the assembly hall. Most from the cafeteria glared at us.

Megan pulled me away from Jenna to sit next to her. “That was a smart move Emily. Making all the kids hit me with the pizzas, sandwiches and ketchup.” She commented.

Our school headmaster walked to the front of the hall. She noted all the food covering the students and gave us the sternest glare she can muster.

“As you all know,” she began. “Once a year a few special students are chosen to go to the top secret island, Tasmania to go to a dragon training

Page 4: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

school.” She hinted. Already we had an idea of what was happening.

“We have a few guests from Tasmania who would like to see you.” Two men came in.

“I’m Professor Jake. We have selected who we would like to attend our dragon school.”

The other man spoke up,” Tegan, Kiara, Dakota, Lilly, Emily,” I gave Megan a shocked look at the mention of my name. “Megan, Summer, Winter,” The twins gave each other a delighted look. “And finally, Jenny. Can you all meet me at the school gates?”

I saw Jenna give her sister a jealous look.

“I’ll send videos of Tasmania to you.” I promised her.

The men left.

“I congratulate the selected students. Everyone get to your classes, the students selected go to the school gates.” The headmaster said.

Megan, me and the other students that were chosen stood at the front of the school.

“So…We just wait here?” Megan asked.

A van came by, the door opened. Professor Jake was driving.

Page 5: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

“Get in children, your parents have been notified. Not to worry, you’ll see them every Monday!” Jake said.

“Alright!” Megan high fived me.

We all piled into the bus.

Chapter 2:

The school was huge. We were driven to the airport then flew to Tasmania. The school took up almost the entire island, so it wasn’t hard to get a good look at the place as the plane circled over ahead.

There were dragon type habitats on the ground and the sky; it was easy to imagine how many dragons there were.

A huge faded red dragon landed next to our small plane. A girl climbed off and headed over to us. The dragon’s tail wrapped around the girl protectively.

The girl said something to the dragon. The dragon unwrapped its tail and coiled it around its front talons and folded its wings back.

“Violet! I’m so glad you can make it!” Jake called.

“I wouldn’t miss it professor.” Violet said flatly.

“Join the group please, Violet.”

Page 6: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

“Okay new guys. Look to the left. You see those small rocks littered around on the ground near the fire? Those are our newest dragon eggs. Walk through the middle of them. If an egg radiates heat it means that it senses its rider near. Also you will be able to tell if the egg is yours or not by just looking at it.” Jake instructed.

“Violet, you go too. I know you already have a dragon, but since you’re other one is rare it may be wise to pretend to be dragon less.” Jake whispered to Violet.

I walked to the middle of the clump of eggs. Suddenly one of the eggs radiated a large beam of boiling heat past my direction.

Megan gave a yelp of surprise as the egg suddenly rocketed towards her. She ducked and the egg flew over her head. It jolted to a stop and dropped into her lap.

Megan gave Professor Jake a questioning look.

“Well done you found your dragon.” Jake said.

The egg in Megan’s lap started rocking. A crooked crack appeared at the top. “Umm.” Megan said.

Page 7: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

I was about to go to her when an egg suddenly shattered into pieces next to me. A hissing mass of black scales slammed into me, making me stumble.

I yelped with surprise at the electricity in the air that radiated from the hatchling.

The ball of black scales uncurled and climbed onto my shoulders. “That was sudden.” Jake commented.

I stared into its golden yellow eyes.

“Wait,” Lilly said,” I thought hatchlings were white when they hatched.”

“Good point. But Lilly on some ‘diamond’’ rare occasions hatchlings are born black. Like a hybrid or a legendary dragon or something.” Professor argued.

“True I read about it 2 years ago.” Dakota said shyly.

A dragon egg collided into him, knocking him over with an ‘oof’.

I laughed and held up the small hatchling.

“Hey Professor? What do you call these things when they pass hatchling stage?” Summers asked.

Page 8: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

“A dragonet.” Jake replied.

I looked over my hatchling. He was small, his wings were way too big for his tiny form, he had two horns angled backwards so when he was old enough the rider could grab onto his horns to hold on, his was long and frail looking, his claws were sharp and looked like mini daggers.

I loved him the minute I saw him. “Aww,” I cooed, pulling him into a hug. The small dragon seemed to melt into my touch, accidently clawing me in the process.

“Ow!” I cried. I pushed him off. He climbed onto my shoulders and used my head to rest his front talons on.

“Okay, now that you all have a dragon. Come along.” Jake called. We hurried after him, me wrestling my hatchling’s talons away from my head.

I finally managed to get him in my arms and not on my head when Jake spoke out. “This is where you will be separated into different cabins. Violet, Emily, you’re in gold cabin. Summer, Megan will be in emerald cabin. Lilly, Dakota in the sapphire cabin, Winter, Jenny, you’re in the Opal cabin.” Professor Jake said.

Page 9: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

“Violet, Emily. You two follow the gold arrows. Summer, Megan, follow the green. Winter, Jenny, follow the rainbow arrows. Dakota, Lilly, follow the blue.”

“This is where we part ways. I will see you all in the morning; dinner will be served at your cabins. Good luck and bye.”

“Wait-“He disappeared in a puff of smoke and Dakota was cut off with a yelp.

Megan’s egg shattered into pieces and a white hatchling like the others popped out.

“Well… Let’s follow the arrows.” Violet said, grabbing my hand and following a gold arrow into a forest.

Violet suddenly paused and gave my hatchling an amused look. “If you want your rider to know that use mind link.” She said.

“What?”

“Nothing.” She said sheepishly.

“I want to name my hatchling Elmo. What are you calling yours?” I asked.

“Carnelian.” (Carn-ie-lien)

“Cool, that’s a type of flower right? Pretty.” I said.

Page 10: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

Violet swiped a strand of blond hair behind her ear, nodding.

“Look it’s our cabin.” She pointed ahead of us.

A small cabin with a gold/yellow roof stood there.

“Arwk.” I heard from Elmo.

Violet raised an eyebrow at Elmo. ”Really?” She asked.

Her white hatchling crawled over to Elmo. “Carnelian.” Amelia scolded. Then she suddenly looked amused. ”Don’t swear little one.” She said. “You’re too long to love, shush!”

“You can understand dragons?” I asked.

“Yes I can. I know you usually only can understand your own dragon with mind link, but I can understand all dragons.” Violet grinned.

“Awrk.” Violet raised an eyebrow at Elmo.

“Wah.” Elmo hid underneath his wing.

Aww, how cute. I don’t know what happened but still cute.

Chapter 3:

I tensed, feeling something cold and scaly curled up on my chest. I relaxed, realising it was Elmo. Elmo’s talons scratched me.

Page 11: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

I pried him off and sat up. Elmo made a high pitched whining sound, ”Awrk?” I made an amused sound.

“You’re finally awake!” I jumped at the sound of Violet’s voice.

She sat on her bed. Her hatchling sat with her tail neatly curled around her talons.

“Hi Violet.” I said. “Awrk!” Elmo screeched, flapping his wings and shook himself from head to toe.

“Ruuurgh!” Carnelian replied, standing up from her sitting position.

Carnelian took a leap and landed next to Elmo.

Elmo screeched again and leaned up onto his hind legs. His ears flicked forwards.

I got out of my bed and dressed into the school’s uniform while Violet went outside.

She bounded back inside with a letter.

“We are to go to the place of witch we separated. Waiting for us is our first lesson. Signed Professor Jake.” She read out loud for me to hear. “But I doubt I’d learn anything from what I’ve learnt in the forest growing up.” She added under her breath.

Page 12: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

“What?” I asked, not hearing her. “Nothing.” She said quickly… a little too quickly.

Violet’s white hatchling rubbed herself against her leg. Violet picked up Carnelian.

“Let’s go shall we?” She made a mock bow.

I rolled my eyes and walked out the door.

I followed the path that we took the previous evening to get to the cabin.

Violet followed after me.

Violet suddenly jolted to a stop. Then she ducked and rolled to the side. “What are you?” I laughed. “What are you doing?”

“Shh.” Violet hissed.

“But seriously wha-.” Huge razor sharp talons wrapped around my waist. “Huh?” I was yanked into the air.

Huge jaws clamped around me, digging in painfully.

“Hey! Ow!” I shouted.

My view was limited by the sky above me. I felt a small rumble echo through the jaws that held me in.

I was going to be eaten by a dragon. By now I was panicking.

Page 13: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

“AWWWRRRRRRRRRK!!!” I heard below me. Suddenly I was suddenly dropped.

I got a good view of the dragon that was about to eat me.

It was green and had vines wrapped around its whole body. It didn’t have any wings but it was flying.

A bolt of lightning zapped from the ground and hit the green dragon. Then a small black shape whizzed after it, shooting beams of lightning at the big dragon.

I landed on something soft. It gave out a loud ‘oof’ and I found myself on the ground next to Violet.

“You’re heavy.” She said. “Thanks. What was that attacking the dragon about to eat me?” I asked.

“Oh didn’t you see? That was Elmo.” Violet replied.

“What?” I asked. I couldn’t believe she looked as calm as she did.

“Elmo?!” I cried.

I looked up. The small black shape was now wrestling in the sky with the green dragon.

Page 14: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

Suddenly a huge bolt of electricity surrounded them. Dark blue lightning sparks erupted everywhere.

The black shape suddenly hurtled towards them, landing in a hissing lump of scales before hiding behind my leg.

Elmo had white lighting patterns marked along his scales, like tiny chunks of gold hidden in the dark.

He peeked around my leg. A crackle of electricity was heard and he opened his mouth. A bolt of lightning shot out, hurtling towards the dragon.

A flash of red zoomed in front of the green dragon. It looked like the green dragon, but chains were wrapped around its body.

It coiled back from shock. A small figure jumped off. I recognised it as Jake.

“I was actually thinking you’d get captured by that. I wanted to see how you’d react and how you’d escape.” Jake said, landing expertly.

He turned to look at Elmo, who growled, sounding like a mini thunder storm.

“Lightning types are supposed to be extinct. I don’t know how he got in with the other eggs. I’ll have to look that up. And he still has black

Page 15: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

scales. That could mean he hasn’t found all his powers,” Jake started talking to himself. Muttering a few words he looked up at me.

“You may have found yourself a hybrid or legendary dragon. All is not clear at the moment, but I’ll get back to you soon.” He said to us.

“Wow, and I thought you knew everything.” I said slyly. I haven’t said one smart or sly remark since coming to the school; I think this place is making me lose my personal touch.

“Carnelian said that from the dragon knowledge that no dragon has been a hybrid or legendary for 111,900 years.” Violet said. “But she says the rest involves a human but dragon knowledge is limited to dragon things not human things.”

Jake and I stared at her.

“But the only thing they don’t know is the dragon they are going to be. If they don’t know about hybrids of legendries then that means they either are one or they were dropped on their head inside their egg.”

“You can speak to dragons?” Jake asked.

“I know many things. I was raised by dragons remember?” Violet replied. “They taught me many years of skills and knowledge.”

Page 16: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

“Okay, as much as this is awesome, we need to go. Get on that green dragon other there.” Jake ordered.

I climbed onto its back. “Awesome!” I cried.

Elmo gave the nastiest glare of jealousy that I’ve ever seen to the green dragon.

He growled, his back arched upwards, he spread his wings to make himself look intimidating. He jumped on in front of me.

Violet climbed on behind me.

“Arwk.” Elmo said.

Carnelian jumped on and landed in Violet’s lap.

“Rrrrrrrgh.” She replied to Elmo.

Jake climbed onto the red dragon.

The green dragon lifted into the air, then moved like a snake slithering across water, only it was slithering across the air.

I looked closely at its tail. Talon-like fins clamped shut just as I looked at it. So that’s how it grabbed me, I thought.

The dragon suddenly lurched to a stop. It growled, the vibrations rippling through its agile body.

Page 17: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

Carnelian growled, sounding like a mini thunderstorm, the white hatchling stood on its hind legs, its front talons gripping my shoulders as it peeked over my head.

Elmo growled, the sound of crackling electricity came from the back of his throat. Snarling, he crouched in front of me.

The green dragon let out a loud roar of warning.

A dark blue blur rocketed past us. It struck the red dragon and the sky lit up with bright light.

The green dragon roared with rage and hurtled forward.

“Jump!” Violet suddenly said.

“What?!” I shrieked.

No answer.

I turned around. Violet wasn’t there.

Was she crazy?!

The blue blur that attacked the red dragon froze. It was a dragon, but it had only two legs.

I could tell it was staring at me. Its eyes widened and it suddenly lunged for the green snake-like dragon.

At the last moment it angled upwards. It landed on the green dragons back. Just in front of me.

Page 18: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

The crackling sound deepened in the back of Elmo’s throat.

The dragon reached out and clamped its talons around the hatchling’s snout. Elmo wriggled in its grasp. I threw myself at Elmo, grabbed him in a fierce-like hug and rolled away from the blue dragon.

Talons clamped around my arm and I was yanked up.

Elmo clung onto me for dear life, growling. I looked up.

The blue dragon had me in its grasp, dangling on one arm and holding onto a hatchling with the other.

“It’s okay Elmo! I got you!” I said.

Elmo made a whimpering sound.

“I won’t drop you.” I said. Why did it go for me and not Violet?

Our eyes met. Intense electricity sparked in his. I caught my reflection of my face. I looked terrified, but my eyes radiated a sea of calm.

I looked at Elmo’s face. He looked as terrified as I did. A spark of rage flared inside of me. How dare it.

Page 19: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

How dare this dragon scare an innocent hatchling half to death?

“We’ll get out of this. If it’s the last thing I do I’ll get you out of this.” I promised.

I wriggled my arm around in the dragon’s talons. The scales were so thick it couldn’t feel a thing.

I smiled and grabbed onto the dragon’s biggest talon as my arm slipped free.

I hung on, knowing I was slipping.

I smiled down at Elmo, trying to encourage him.

I felt a presence slip into my mind. ”What are you up to?”

Elmo’s eyes went wide and he shook his head.

“Don’t!”

I let go.

I angled myself so Elmo was on top of me, my hair whipped my face.

Elmo stared at me, tears streaming down his snout. “It doesn’t have to be like this.” The voice in my head said.

I angled myself at the tallest tree and took the hit. I heard the snap of bones breaking and knew I wouldn’t survive.

Page 20: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

But fate had another plan.

Chapter 4:

5 years later…

I hissed, rubbing the spot where the tree branch swung and hit my face.

“Ha! You deserve that!” The blue and white dragonet said.

“Elmo.” I said flatly.

“Emily.” Elmo copied.

I sighed and collapsed onto my tree branch. Elmo was a branch above me.

“Stop acting like a hatchling.” I scolded.

“I’m not. I’m a dragonet not a hatchling! But it does take one to know one right?” Elmo said smugly.

“So you’re admitting you’re not acting your age?”

“I never said that,” Elmo recoiled.

“Sure.” I replied.

“Emily!” He whined.

“Elmo!” I mimicked.

“You’re infecting my awesomeness!” He said.

Page 21: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

“You’re being a brat.” I shot back at him.

“Whatever. Wanna come with me to get mangoes?” Elmo sighed, giving up.

“You can bet your talons and teeth on it.” I replied.

“Come on then.” Elmo pounced out of the tree and glided to the bottom.

I climbed down after him.

“Come on, the fruit trees are this way.” I said pointedly.

Elmo flapped his wings defiantly, “I know that!”’

We walked down a winding path that was grooved into the grass by 5 years of passage.

“Hey are you still working on that dress you’re making out of that cloth you found?” Elmo asked, making conversation.

“Yes, it’s almost done. It looks like something an angel would wear already.” I said, picturing a white dress from a soft fabric with stretchy shoulder straps.

Don’t ask me how I found the shoulder straps.

“I doubt you count as an Angel. It already looks finished to me. Why do you think it’s not finished?” Elmo pondered.

Page 22: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

“I need more of those mango pips for the staff that goes with.” I explained.

“Don’t even want to know why you want a staff.” Elmo said cheekily.

I slapped him.

“Ow, okay, ok!” Elmo squawked.

“There are the mango trees.” I said, pointing upwards.

“So do I use my lightning blast? My super speed and strength? My awesomeness? Star power?” Elmo questioned.

“You’re too ridiculously over powered for your own good.” I teased him. “Lightning blast.” I said.

A sound of crackling electricity came from the back of he’s throat, sparks erupted from his mouth and nose.

Lightning travelled along his horns, tail, wings and claws. He shot a bolt of lightning at a bundle of mangoes.

He quickly snatched a basket I had made yesterday and caught the mangoes in it.

“Nice,” I told him. He grinned at me.

“So I’ve been working on a few games recently, since we’ve been to every inch of this huge forest

Page 23: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

and are bored of it. I thought it might entertain us.” Elmo said.

“Couldn’t you of thought of that one year ago when we were crazy of boredom?” I asked.

Elmo didn’t answer.

“Let’s go. We have enough mangoes.” I said.

A shadow fell over us.

Elmo got on the defensive, whirling around, snout pointed to the sky.

Electricity crackled at the back of his throat.

“Rurrrr, click, click rurrrrh.” A metallic dragon appeared from above.

I stared as boiling hot lava was shot at Elmo.

Suddenly I grinned. This should be fun.

“Dodge it Elmo!” I grinned.

Elmo dodged to the side then shot a small ball of crackling electricity at the dragon.

Elmo launched into the sky. Then froze, he collapsed to the ground.

I looked around and saw a telekinesis dragon not far away.

My smile dropped; since Elmo was out I’d have to protect him.

Page 24: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

“Well I say bring it on.” I said.

I ran at the metallic dragon. It looked at me with a confused expression. I grabbed onto its low hanging tail, using my momentum to swing up so I was on top on the tail.

I used his spines to climb on top of his back. I stood up in a pose a bit like a surfer’s and ran to his head.

I grabbed one of his sharp metal horns and jumped off his back.

My weight caused the dragon’s head to tip over, over balancing. The sound of ripping metal was heard.

The adult dragon’s body dived to the ground. I swung my leg up and kicked the front of its neck.

The metallic dragon started coughing, choking on nothing.

I smirked and made myself heavier. His body collapsed from exhaustion, still choking.

With a heaving breath something weird glazed over his eyes and lay there, limp. He was dead.

I turned to the telekinesis dragon.

It was gone.

Page 25: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

I let go of the metal dragon’s horn and walked to Elmo.

Elmo laid there in all his glory, looking like a god that was injured and was lying there, close to death.

“You can’t be rid of me that easily.” Elmo said, peeking an eye open.

“Yeah, but I can still try.” I joked.

Elmo snorted and slowly got to his feet. He stretched his wings out and yawned.

“Let’s be off shall we m’lady?” Elmo bowed on his front legs.

“Yes. Let’s, good sir.” I mocked.

Chapter 5:

“Why? Just… why?!” I whined.

Elmo was sitting on his tree branch… like one of those silly seductive ladies you’d find in paintings.

“I’ve never seen a seductive lady in my life. Only female seductive dragons.” Elmo promised.

“That looks just like what a lady would do to get attention. Wait… are you gay and trying to attract another male?” I asked.

Page 26: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

“Psh, no! This is how male’s pose. Females always cross their front talons like this and stand like a slouch.” Elmo snorted, crossing his front legs in demonstration and made his back bend over.

He looked like cool human male… but without the car.

I shook my head. “Dragons have strange ways.”

“As do humans.” Elmo pointed out. I looked down at my white dress.

“You always wear stuff like that, what’s the point? Why can’t you all just get scales?”

“We are different.” I said.

“I know, but why?” Elmo insisted.

“Do I look like a dictionary to you?” I snapped.

“Nooooooooo… maaaaaaaaaybeeeeeee.” Elmo teased. “But you sure are boring.”

I reach up and slap his tail.

Elmo flicked it out of reach.

“Wanna go for a fly?” Elmo asked. “No.” I replied.

“Plwease?” Elmo pleaded in a baby voice.

“Fine.” I said.

Page 27: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

Elmo was about the size of a big horse so I could ride him if I wanted to.

Elmo presented his backside to me and jumped to the ground.

I climbed down the tree after him.

I climbed onto his back.

“Well?” I demanded, “What are you waiting for?”

Elmo spread his wings out. He pounced into the sky and gained altitude. He burst through a large cloud, leaving a gaping hole behind us. He paused in mid-air then dived down through the same hole.

A crackling sound of electricity came from his yellow wing tips. The white patterns along his body glimmered with light.

Elmo suddenly whipped upwards again. I held onto his horns so I couldn’t fall off.

He hovered just below the clouds. His head whipped around, sniffing.

His eyes narrowed to slits and he looked at me.

He growled. He checked the sky again.

“Elmo?” I asked.

Elmo ignored me.

Page 28: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

I saw a flash of black and I saw talons reaching towards me.

I cried out in alarm as I was flung off Elmo.

Elmo roared in surprise, the young dragonet lashed out to grab me.

I felt myself land in someone’s arms. A dragon rider!

I wriggled around desperately.

I felt a powerful hit to the back of my head.

“Let me go!” I said hoarsely. I hadn’t talked ever since I started communicating by mind link with Elmo.

I felt the person hold me tighter and a hand clamped over my mouth.

I bit it and kicked out. I jumped off a black dragon.

I was falling. Well done, good idea.

“Elmo get your lazy butt over here.” I sighed.

I landed on Elmo with an ‘oof’.

We backed up and looked at the rider on the black dragon. The dragon seemed to suck up all the light and leave only shadow behind.

Page 29: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

The rider raised an arm and both he and the dragon vanished.

Elmo sniffed the air. “I can’t sense them anywhere.”

“Then let’s go.” I said a hint of annoyance in my voice.

Elmo tucked in his wings and we dived to the ground.

He shifted his talons underneath him nervously.

I climbed off his back.

“I swear recently we’ve been magnets for trouble.” I said.

“Now what? Should we move or something?” Elmo asked. “Because I’m not going anywhere.”

“You don’t have to go anywhere, I could move.” I said.

“Good riddance. I’ve had enough of seeing your face.” Elmo said.

“What are you saying?” I asked.

“I’m done with you! I never want to see your face again.” Elmo said. He launched into the sky.

“What did I do?” I yelled.

Page 30: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

“Everything.” He replied. “You made me hatch from my egg. If you weren’t alive I wouldn’t even be a hybrid!”

He flew into the clouds.

I stared blankly after him. What just happened?

Sitting down on the ground, I stared at my hands.

I tied my brown hair up in a ponytail and glared at anything that moved.

I then got up and walked. I wanted to leave this stupid island. I want to go back to my family in Australia and go to school and see Megan and Jenna.

I shook my head and took off running. I didn’t care where I was going, anywhere away from that tree that Elmo and I took in as our home for five years.

I stumbled and landed on something hard.

“Ow!” I cried. I stood up and looked down.

It was a dragon egg as tall as my knees. I got a chilly feeling from being as close to it.

I bent down. The egg suddenly rocked and cracked open. A tail peeked through the crack.

Page 31: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

It was silvery white tail that seemed to glow. It thrashed around wildly, trying to get the rest of its body out.

It was stuck and would surely die if I didn’t do anything. I sighed and started using my nails to crack the egg’s fragile shell.

I accidently touched its tail. I quickly took my hands away. Its whole body radiated a cold shivery feeling. It looked up. Its eyes were a crystal light blue.

It sniffed the air and reached its talons in my direction.

I picked up the small dragonet, ignoring the cold that radiated from it.

“Who would lay their egg all the way out here?” I teased it.

The dragonet didn’t answer. It looked at me, but it looked like it didn’t see anything.

I raised an eyebrow. “Are you blind?” I asked it.

The small dragon shook its head like it was in a trance.

Suddenly I felt a bond snap between us.

Great, I am now a dragon rider again. Yippee for me.

Page 32: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

I rolled my eyes at it, causing the small female dragonet to tilt its head at me.

“Well since I’m stuck with you I may as well name you.” I said.

I already had a name in mind.

“Glacier.” I said. Glacier didn’t make a sound but tilted her head at me.

She thought for a second then let out a piercing shriek and flapped her wings at me.

“Yay you agree!” I muttered sarcastically.

I flipped her off and cross my arms so that the icy blue cold hatchling could balance on them.

Glacier’s cold eyes glared at me. “Is it me or are you just plain grumpy. I should give you a nickname; Grumpy Grouchy Glacier.” I joked.

Glacier’s ragged sharp talons dug into my arms. “Ow! Okay okay!” I sighed.

He suddenly nuzzled into me, purring affectionately.

Make up your mind. Grumpy or happy? I thought. I sighed as my thoughts went on Elmo.

“It was his choice to leave me. I won’t stop him. If he hates me that’s his choice.” I muttered and looked down a Glacier.

Page 33: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

You have a new future to write now, my inner self showed an appearance and I found myself looking down at Glacier.

You have another chance, a new responsibility. You taught Elmo what you could and he taught you. It’s time to start anew.

Oh so now you decide to show up? Couldn’t you come sooner? I snapped. Look and me, I’m talking inside my head. I think I’m losing my sanity.

Just remember what I told you. My inner me snapped at me.

Chapter 6;

“Glacier! Stop chasing that snake, your freaking me out!” I called to the small silvery blue hatchling.

Glacier titled her head at me. Then she reached out at the snake with grabby talons.

Ugh, I think the male dragons are easier to manage then females. Elmo never disobeyed me.

Actually, I should have ordered him to not fly off.

Tears pricked in my eyes but I hastily wiped them away.

Page 34: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

Up ahead Glacier finally touched the snake. It withered away from her in shock from her icy cold talons. Glacier let a piercing shriek and poked the snake again.

The snake shot towards me to get away from Glacier.

I shrieked and jumped half a foot in the air. I latched onto the nearest tree and clung on for life.

Glacier shrieked and looked up at me questioningly. I gave her an irritated look and climbed down from the tree.

Glacier hissed warningly. She inhaled a huge breath of air and held it in. I felt the air around us suddenly grow cold and the area we were in suddenly looked a lot darker.

An icicle of glittering ice was fired at the tree behind me.

“Glacier!” I yelped.

Glacier released her breath and a piercing cry emitted from her throat. The light seamed to swallow the dark that Glacier created and the little dragonet was standing there, glaring at me.

“What did I do?” I raised my hands in surrender.

Glacier snorted and shook out her cramped wings, never releasing her glare at me.

“Well if Elmo ran off because he hates me, I have no reason to not believe you’ll run off too.” I muttered.

Glacier’s expression changed and she looked at me with sympathy in her eyes. Then she snapped back to glaring.

She hissed and jumped into my arms.

Her crystal cold eyes stared up at me in a fierce glare.

I rolled my eyes at her strange behaviour and walked up the side of a hill. As soon as I reached the top a dragon suddenly shot up into the sky from the other side of the hill in an upwards spiral.

I dropped and flattened myself against the ground. Glacier gave a cry of protest but I held her snout shut and tucked her under one arm.

I watched the light purple glowing dragon above us as it spun around in the air. A small feminine figure was perched on its back, twisting with her dragon.

Glacier’s icy talons clawed my hand away from her snout and she glared up at the dragon.

Page 36: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

Suddenly she shot up the hill with a loud hiss. I quickly rolled over to hide in a small bush.

Pretty pathetic, I know but I’m scared of other humans after living alone in the forest for five years.

Glacier let out a loud piercing shriek. She lowered herself in a defensive crouch with her wings spread up over her head.

The white-ish glowing purple dragon suddenly dived and landed right in front of Glacier, a massive growl vibrating through out its body.

Glacier’s small growl thundered in the air.

Her cold stare sent shivers down the older dragon’s scales. But the dragon did not back down. Instead it crossed its front talons and looked relaxed at the whole situation.

A girl with blonde hair suddenly dismounted then stood back a few paces and watched.

Glacier hissed and reached out her talons. She latched onto the older dragon’s silvery claws.

The glowing dragon looked down, confused at the iciness it felt in Glacier’s touch.

Glacier took a stronger hold and I visibly saw her jaw clench as she gritted her teeth.

Page 37: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

Suddenly she flipped onto her back, still holding onto the older dragon’s talons and flicked her own talons over her head.

What astonished me the most was that the older dragon was flung over Glaciers head and landed with a loud thud down the hill.

I stared at Glacier.

What power can she truly hold in that small body?

Swarms of dust blocked my vision from the huge crater the bigger dragon created when Glacier flung her over her head.

“Glacier!” I hollered in terror, standing up.

“Carnelian!” Another voice, softer, echoed to the purple dragon.

I felt the cold iciness of Glacier’s scales as she slid under my left arm and felt her cold glare digging into my soul.

I shivered and turned to her with a relieved smile on my face.

“Are you ok Carnelian? Where do you think that hatchling went?” The familiar voice said.

I stood up, Glacier in my arms and I try to back away quietly.

Page 38: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

The girl was much clearer than she was before.

The girl’s head snapped towards me.

“Who are you?” She asked.

“I-I’m Emily. Who are you?” I asked suspiciously.

“EMILY?! YOU’RE ALIVE! I thought you were dead, how did you survive that fall! WHERE WERE YOU ALL THIS TIME?!” The girl yelled.

“And who are you?” I asked. She looked familiar, but some things just never tick.

“I’M VIOLET, REMEMBER?! Where’s Elmo?! WHO IS THAT?!” Violet pointed to Glacier.

“Glacier.” I said warily.

“Oh okay. Hi Glacier… Emily we need your help! We’ve been attacked hundreds of times this year. I don’t know how you’re alive but WE NEED YOU!”

I swear a few bird were scared into the sky.

“Attacked by what?” I asked suspiciously.

“Wild dragons! Wait… you don’t trust me?! But we are best friends!” Violet shrieked hysterically.

I could tell she had been through a lot by the way she was acting.

Page 39: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

Glacier gave me a disbelieving look then looked at Violet. I made a face at her.

“Look, Violet. I’ll help.” I sighed.

“Really? THIS IS GREAT! ISN’T THIS GREAT?” Violet said hysterically.

“If these attacks can make you as hysterical as you are to human beings then I’ll be kind of a monster to not want to help.”

Violet dropped to the floor.

“Really? THANK YOU!”

I helped Violet up, “Let’s go!”

“Where is school anyway?”

“Oh a short walk from here. Or fly since its literally above our heads.”

Startled, I looked up.

“Okaaaay did not see that coming.”

Chapter 7:

“Why is it in the sky?” I asked, staring.

“Huh? Oh, what a silly question!” Violet said,” We moved it to the sky so we can get

a view of everything, so when dragons attack we can prepare ourselves.”

I didn’t respond.

“Come on, we need to sneak in. There was an attack when I left seeking for help and they take hours to finally retreat. So it’s still going on up there.”

The purple dragon leaned down and Violet climbed into the saddle.

“Hop on.” Violet said.

With a withering sigh I unhappily climbed on.

“Carnelian, activate your force field.” Violet advised.

Carnelian lifted her slender snout and snorted in agreement.

I looked around curiously, this felt like flying Elmo. Except… it wasn’t Elmo.

I sighed sadly.

“You okay? Does it have to do with why Elmo isn’t here?” Violet asked.

Page 41: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

“No.” I said sharply, but a bit louder than I intended.

“I was just asking- oh no! The dragons have destroyed the east side of the academy!” Violet cried.

I looked up. Dragons swarmed around the building, most of them breathed fire but there was an occasional burst of water.

“How are we getting past that?” I asked.

“Duh, we use our ninja skills to get past. Ha, I heard you were the smartest in your class back at your school before you vanished.”

“I was? Oh.” I sheepishly smiled.

“Okay Carnelian. Cloak!” Violet cried.

“Huh? Did you just say Cloak?”

“Yeah. In other words it means invisible.” Violet explained.

I raised an eyebrow.

“What does non-visible mean?” I smirked.

“Emily, I’m not dumb it’s… I dunno.” Violet dragged out.

Page 42: Dragon Child NARRATIVE

“It means invisible. How old are you exactly?” I rolled my eyes at her.

“17.” Violet replied.

A dragon threw itself in their path, then something knocked it away and Carnelian kept flying.

Carnelian spiralled upwards and Violet tried to land her upside down.

To my astonishment it worked.

“Okay! We have to grab the ceiling and monkey bar to the trapdoor.” Violet instructed.

She must have caught my worried look.

“Don’t worry. Carnelian will fly under us.” Violet climbed onto Carnelian’s wing then she grabbed the ceiling.

I followed her, and ended up hanging off the ceiling too.
