This qualification recognises people who have the competencies required for performing basic bricklaying and plastering tasks. It is awarded to people who have demonstrated the skills and knowledge required to perform basic bricklaying and plastering tasks, including manufacturing bricks, using bricklaying hand tools and works in a bricklaying and plastering team; carry out basic levelling, excavation, setting out and concreting as part of bricklaying operations; read and interpret basic drawing; build and plaster straight brick wall between profiles in different bonds; erect and dismantle basic scaffolding as part of bricklaying and plastering operations; apply fundamental communication and numeracy competencies in the workplace; entrepreneurship skills; provide basic first aid and occupational health and safety.

This qualification is designed to be accessible and flexible. There are no entry requirements for this qualification. The main focus is on the outcomes of this qualification, not the how, when and where learning occurred. Some people applying to do this qualification may currently be competent in one or more of the unit standards and should then be given the opportunity to apply for recognition of prior learning. This qualification leads to the National Vocational Certificate in General Construction (Level 2) (Bricklaying and Plastering).

It is awarded to people who have demonstrated the skills and knowledge required to perform a range of bricklaying and plastering tasks, including communicate in the bricklaying industry; performing calculations, estimations and measurements related to bricklaying operations, carrying out setting out and levelling operations; construct masonry arches, performing rendering, plastering and concreting tasks and using plastering and concreting hand tools; Install door and window frames as part of bricklaying and plastering operations; lay walls and floor tiles; work safely on scaffolding, platforms and ladders as part of bricklaying operations; build a return and squint corner in different bonds; cast, finish and cure concrete; and demonstrate knowledge of the requirements of entrepreneurs; apply knowledge of basic building science; building drawing; engineering science; engineering drawing; basic mathematics in different contexts and demonstrate knowledge of HIV/AIDS in the workplace.

The entry requirement for this qualification is the National Vocational Certificate in General Construction (Level 1) (Bricklaying and Plastering) or equivalent. The main focus is on the outcomes of this qualification, not the how, when and where learning occurred. Some people applying to do this qualification may currently be competent in one or more of the unit standards and should then be given the opportunity to apply for recognition of prior learning. This qualification was updated and issued as Version 2 in 2014.

Version 1 of this qualification will not be awarded as from 31 December 2015. People currently working towards Version 1 of this qualification are

advised to transfer their existing credit awards to this version of the qualification at any time during 2015 and beyond.

People holding the earlier version of this qualification will continue to have their qualification recognised within the Bricklaying and Plastering Industry in terms of meeting relevant career and further learning entry and/or progression requirements.

A number of new qualifications have been suggested following the review of registered qualifications in the (MQCEGWS) Mining, Quarrying, Construction, Electricity, Gas, Water -Supply and Sanitation industry:
