ASIS Women in Security Joan Berry was the first female to join the ranks of the ASIS organization. She served as the first Chapter Secretary in Rochester, NY, in addition to serving in other roles for the Chapter, excluding the title of Chapter Chair. She received the lifetime member award in 1957.

Today, women have found acceptance in the security industry as they play fundamental roles in leadership and decision-making positions. The rise in ranks has had a positive effect and led to an increase of women within the security industry. As more and more women rise into leader-ship roles, they serve to inspire and motivate others to believe that it is possible for themselves.

ASIS has dedicated their efforts in establishing a council for women to engage, inspire, and exchange ideas. The North Texas Chapter Women In Security (WIS) committee’s goal for 2019 is to elevate and empower women by equipping them with knowledge, building networking relation-ships, and provide resources that offer opportunities for women to suc-ceed and become recognized in the industry. The WIS committee is ex-cited to present the 2019 women in security progressive movement – She Started Somewhere. Their goal is to recognize powerful women who have made it in the industry that started from somewhere. By sharing their stories and engaging in mentorship activities they aim to empower and inspire others to join them, serving in leadership roles and continuing to prosper in the security sector.

WIS will be hosting quarterly events starting on February 20th

at the Toyota Headquarters, with an exclusive tour and presentations by securi-ty management. Events are free of charge to women in security and rely on their fundraising efforts from theirOctober Charity Gala. Thank you to DSDA to contributing to our success last year!

Winter Safety

Texas weather is ever-changing.

Winter cold can strike at any time.

Be ready with these tips:

Stay indoors as much as possi-

ble.

Be careful with heaters or fire-

places to reduce fire risk.

If you have to be outdoors, dress

in layers to stay warm.

Watch for ice on sidewalks and

driveways. Walk or drive care-

fully.

Don’t leave kids or pets in the car

unattended.

Check on neighbors or coworkers

who are older or have access

or functional needs.

Bring pets, plants, and people

indoors when its cold.

FLU SEASON IS HERE!

The time for flu prevention is now. The flu can lead to seri-ous complications including hospitalization and even death for those at high risk. Take steps to protect yourself from the flu now.

Get a Flu Shot. This pro-tects yourself and those around you.

Wash your hands thor-oughly and frequently with warm, soapy water.

If you are running a fever or feel ill, stay home if at all possible.

Avoid touching your eyes and face to prevent spreading germs.

Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze—with a tissue is best. Throw away the tissue after use.

Training and Exercise

2018 was OEM's most ambitious year for training and ex-ercise. We conducted the largest full-scale exercise in the city's history with the Majestic Theatre Mass Casualty Inci-dent Exercise that brought together several needed ele-ments - an evacuation drill for the theatre, a mass casualty incident for responders, patient tracking for hospitals, and family reunification.

OEM will be hosting several train-ings and exercises in 2019.

January consists of an Active Shooter Summit focusing on the aftermath of an active shooter event leading up to working with our downtown district to host a high-rise active shooter scenario.

In May, OEM will host a four-day event that includes a two-day school shooting exercise, testing the hospital Family Reunification Centers (FRC), the Texas Depart-ment of State Health Services (DSHS) family assistance phone lines, and the Dallas County Family Assistance Center (FAC) plan.

All trainings and exercises will lead up to the 2019 Complex Coordinat-ed Terrorist Attack (CCTA) regional full-scale exercise. For more infor-mation on upcoming training and exercises, contact Tiffany Reid at [email protected].

OEM is in the early planning stages of next year’s symposium. We are planning on holding the 5th

Symposium on May 1, 2019. We are very excited about continuing this half-day event with all our

partners.

We are actively planning topics that are important to the public and private sectors when it comes to

emergencies. In the past, we discussed active shooter scenarios, what to do immediately after a sce-

nario, and how private partners work with public agencies during an event. If you have any sugges-

tions for topics or speakers, please send them in. We want your input and feedback.

To suggest ideas or to get information on how to be an event sponsor, contact Rhonda Simpson at
