What’s Your Destination?“All you need is the plan, the road map, and the courage to press on to your destination.”
~ Earl Nightingale
When I was a younger man, my life consisted of few long-term plans and even fewer long-term goals. The only itinerary I had for myself involved making plans on a day-to-day basis, because I didn’t see or understand the importance of having broader visions for myself. This near-sightedness worked out for me sometimes, but often it left me feeling very unfulfilled. I realized this sort of aimlessness to which I had grown accustomed was not something I wanted to dictate my life, because in spite of its lack of responsibility and effort, I eventually saw it as purposeless. Once I reached this point, I knew it was time for a change.
Making the decision to actually lead my life instead of letting life lead me
was, naturally, somewhat frightening. It involved taking risks, stepping outside of my comfort zone, and working hard to overcome the fairly passive attitude I’d had throughout my youth (and of course, it involved just plain working hard). Luckily for me, I found a Company that allowed me to take this new direction in my life and actually begin to navigate it … a Company that had a ladder system built with people like me in mind. I said ‘goodbye’ to a life without a defined objective and mapped out a course for myself and my career that ultimately led me to the success I had marked as my destination.
My point is, the big change in my life came as a result of creating a roadmap with certain stopping places in mind. I learned quickly that without a vision of what you want to accomplish and a route to get yourself there, you move without direction, making little (if any) progress.
So ask yourself if you have a course mapped out for your career. I mentioned earlier this Company’s structure for career advancement has allowed many people to grow as professionals, but I want you to reflect not only on advancing your career in general, but also on where your career can really flourish.
Oftentimes we are presented with opportunities in life that involve making a decision to make some sort of significant change, including a change in the place we have comfortably called ‘home’. I know from personal experience relocating is not necessarily an easy thing to do, but it’s something that could ultimately be extremely beneficial to you, your career, and your family.
The goal of Liberty National is to expand to new places so we can offer both coverage to individuals and families and our Opportunity of a Lifetime to new, motivated recruits. In order to accomplish this goal, we need driven people (like you) to venture into new territory and make it happen. Places like Los Angeles, San
Diego, Miami, Las Vegas, Omaha, Northern Virginia, and more are locations where LNL should be making its mark, and now is the time to expand.
Your destination lies ahead; be courageous enough to take the first step.I know change isn’t always easy, especially when you have a family to include in your plans or the comfort of home to leave behind. But consider the future of what your career could mean for the people you care about most. To our Supervising Agents and Agency Directors, think about what could result from relocating – some adjustments, of course, but also an incredible opportunity to grow your career somewhere new. And what follows could mean a substantial and positive change for your loved ones. To our Agents, I know relocating might not be on your immediate radar, but I hope as you envision your future of advancing with this Company, you remain open to the possibilities new positions and new locales could bring.
So once you have your course charted, all that’s left is “the courage to press on to your destination,” as the simple yet powerfully encouraging quote from Earl Nightingale states above. I know it takes a certain strength to make a change, but I am confident you have that strength within you. I encourage you to step up to the challenge and to make your mark in new territory. Your destination lies ahead; be courageous enough to take the first step. •

What’s Your Destination? torch May 2014 - 3
Seeking SuccessWhen I was in a seminar years ago, a keynote speaker talked about urgency and how we move with greater purpose when things REALLY matter to us. The room was filled with close to 1,000 people. The illustration was simple, yet impactful.
The speaker told everyone there was a crisp $100 bill under the seat of one lucky attendee. All the attendees had to do was bend slightly forward, reach down, grab it, and they’d be $100 richer! Moments later, the lucky attendee let out “Woohoo!”, and the crowd applauded. Then the speaker addressed the room again.
“How many of you didn’t even bother to reach around for the $100?” he asked.
About 100 hands went up. As he prepared to tell attendees what the next challenge would be, you could tell the room had big expectations. It was like everyone suspected the stakes would be higher this time. People were on the edge of their seats.
With a slight whisper the speaker said, “Somewhere in this room is a brown paper bag.” (Long dramatic pause.) “It contains $100,000 in cash.”
Before he could even finish his sentence a woman in the front row began running in circles searching for the bag. The speaker’s point was made crystal clear. If the prize is worth it to you, your actions will show it. There will be an obvious difference in your reaction! The speaker asked the woman to sit back down, and then he finished his statement.
“Somewhere in this room there’s a brown paper bag containing $100,000 in cash.” (Long dramatic pause.) “Whoever finds it, please be kind enough to return it to me. I misplaced it earlier.”
As you can imagine, a roar of laughter filled the room. The lady in the front row wasn’t laughing. She wanted the money!
The point is, do you really understand what the Opportunity of a Lifetime at Liberty National is all about? Do you have any idea what it means for your future, the future of your children, and their children after them? If so, do you truly believe in your opportunity?
This career can bring you more than just a paycheck. It’s more than a sales job. Liberty National is your ticket to anything you want in life. This is your chance for financial freedom and a lifestyle you can enjoy.
Whether you’re leading an Agency of 100 people, an Agency of 10 people, or an Agency of one person, you‘re still a leader. You’re still molding the path of success.
If you want to create massive momentum in your team, you must start by developing massive personal momentum. It starts with you. It always has and always will.
When you grow personally and in business, your organization, large or small, will also grow and change. Become the kind of leader you would want to follow! Seek to be respected by those you respect.
Get with your Supervising Agent, Agency Director, or Agency Owner, and create a game plan for your success. Establish accountability points. I challenge you to ignite personal momentum the same way the lady on the front row of my story sought out that brown paper bag.
Improve your attitude. Invigorate your energy. Prove your determination. Enlarge your vision. Polish your professionalism. Increase your activity. Sell more. Learn more. Recruit more. Rest a little, then wake up and do it all over again! Is the outcome worth it to you?

THE LAW OF ENVIRONMENT
6From John Maxwell’s The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth
“I believe at some point during every person’s lifetime, there comes a need to change environments in order to grow.” - John Maxwell
According to Maxwell, change depends on your choices, and there are six choices you must make to put yourself in a better place for growth.
1. Consider your current environment. Think about where you are now and why you want to change, because change just for the sake of change doesn’t help you grow.
2. Change yourself and your environment. Changing only yourself or only your environment makes growth slower and more difficult. Change both yourself and your environment and growth will be faster and more successful.
3. Change the people with whom you spend time. The most significant factor in any person’s environment is the people. Spend time with people who are positive, leaders, influencers, and game changers, and are themselves growing.
4. Challenge yourself in your new environment. Make challenge a habit and a discipline. Give yourself room to expand your horizons and intentionally find and create growth opportunities. If you have goals, tell people about them. You work harder and smarter if others are watching.
5. Focus on the current moment and what you can do now. If you want to change yourself and your environment, don’t dwell on the past, because you can’t change it. Don’t worry about the future, because you can’t control it. Focus on today!
6. Move despite criticism. Growth comes from taking action, and taking action invariably brings criticism from others. Move forward anyway and always reach for what is beyond your grasp.
When you take charge of your life, you no longer ask permission of others or society. Yes, seek counsel of those who are important to you, but ultimately you make your own decision and are responsible for it. Are you ready to make that decision? Are you ready to grow and change your environment? There may never be a better time than NOW!

perspective
Steve DiChiaroExecutive Vice President and Chief Agency Officer
Are You Where You Want to Be?When I spoke at Convention last year, I talked about Liberty National someday becoming ‘Liberty International’ as we expand and open offices across the United States and eventually around the globe. I don’t know how long it will take; I only know it will happen, and the process is already underway. What’s Liberty National expansion mean for you? It means unlimited possibilities for you and your career.
Are you on the career track that’s right for you? If you’re happy where you are, and you’re living the lifestyle you want, that’s great. But is there a little voice in the back of your mind telling you there’s somewhere else you want to be? Something bigger you want to do? We want to help you do it and, in the process, help Liberty National achieve unprecedented growth and success. See ‘Liberty National Career Track Guidelines for Advancement’ on the Agent website to consider the next step in your career and where you want that step to take you.
Oppportunity comes to those who are open to it. Are you open? We’re constantly told by the media about the millions of people in this country who need health insurance. Well, it’s not just health insurance people need. Life insurance may be even more important than health insurance when you consider what can happen to a family if the breadwinner dies. You have a tremendous opportunity to introduce Liberty National products to people in every corner of the United States and beyond. You just have to be willing to literally and figuratively expand your horizons. There’s a BIG world out there with exciting potential. What you have achieved so far in your career for yourself and for the Company may be a great start, but you are capable of doing so much more … for yourself, your family, and for Liberty National.
Liberty National is well known in the southeastern United States. But the southeast is only one section of this great country. What
about the northeast, the midwest, the northwest, Alaska, Hawaii? There are millions of people in these areas who need to know about the benefits of Liberty National insurance and about the Opportunity of a Lifetime.
If you have the skills, the systems, and the desire to grow, why not do it in a place you choose? Ask your Agency Owner for a location brochure to learn more about prime areas in the United States for expansion and growth. Why not become all you can become while you offer the Opportunity of a Lifetime to men and women in Boston, Massachusetts; Cleveland, Ohio; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Las Vegas, Nevada; San Diego, California; or Omaha, Nebraska? Opportunity comes to those who are open to it. Are you open?
I’m excited about the future of Liberty National. You’ve kicked off the year with good production for the first quarter. But remember … we have three more quarters to go. You have an awesome opportunity right now to start writing the story of the greatest growth and expansion in the history of this great Company. Liberty National is no longer focused predominately on southeastern states. Liberty National is focused on the entire United States and beyond. The more cities in which Liberty National has offices … the more Agencies you operate … the more individuals and families you protect … the greater the success and growth we all experience.
As you dig into the second quarter of 2014, examine your life and your goals. Think long term. What are your goals for five years from now? Ten years from now? Fifteen years from now? Then decide what you must do to reach those goals. Who do you want to be? Where do you want to be? What do you want to achieve? When do you want to achieve it? Set up a five-year plan, a 10-year plan, a 15-year plan, and put the processes in place to reach those goals. You may need to make adjustments along the way, but your ultimate goals will remain pretty consistent.
The future is open and waiting for you. Your Opportunity of a Lifetime is here and now. I bet you can almost taste it!
