AmountainvillageinSwitzerlandisanunlikelylocationforcutting-edgeculture,butinPontresina,intheEngadinregionofSwitzerland–famedforitslargeBelle-Époquehotels–thehistoricHotelWaltherhasunveiledsomeavant-gardearttorivalZurich’sblue-chipgalleries,aspartofanextensive,multi-millionmakeover.Atriumphant110yearsafteritwelcomeditsfirstguestsintoitsreceptionarea,visitorsin2017willstepinandbegreetedbyagiganticcube,carvedfroma20.5tonnepieceofmarble.ItisthecreationofarelativelyunknownSwisssculptorandarchitect,VeitRausch,framedbylushandlavishtextilesandfurnishings,partofthehotel’sstrikingtransformationbyVirginiaMaissen,theinteriordesignerwhohasworkedhermagiconHotelAdler,CafeOscarandAirportHotelBaselinthepast.

Inthebarandsmoker’slounge,thehotelcommissionedSwissartistRolfSachstocreateaninstallationrespondingtothehistoryofthespaceanditsfunctioninthepresent,whilebringingtherightatmospherefordrinking.TheresultisSplendurir(meaning‘pouringlight’),comprising77hanginglights,perforatedbucketsandmilkjugs,aquietnodtolocalmountaintraditionsandaknowingtipofthehattothosewithaglassseatedbelow.

OnthewallsarepaintingsbySandroFabbri,anotheroff-beatartistwithanexperimentalandeclecticstylethatdovetailsillustration,calligraphyanddesign.WhilethelargestworkinstalledatWaltherisalandscapescenedepictinghyperrealsnow-cappedpeaks,pickinguponthedeepromanticismandgrandeurofthehotel’sspectacularexterior,aroundthebaritself,amoreplayful,contemporarymoodisconjuredbyFabbri’sfluid,spontaneouslines.Theseriesofsevenillustrativevignettesformadesultorystoryboardthatperhapsbecomesclearerasthealcoholworksitsownmagic.
