Many More Words O n T h e New Yr W^rM Far F o r 1939

By E L I E E N M O N F O R T Education and more education

This is what is being impressed on our minds as the schools ad-vertise the Worlds Fair of 1939

Of course we want to become educated but human nature doesnt want the educating to become too obvious Therefore we should go to the Fair where education may be procured along w i t h a dose of fun excitement and astonishment

We can study the history of Railroads from books but i t is made much easier for us when we vis i t the Transportation Zone of the Fair We w i l l be able to see the largest model rai lroad ever b u i l t and the latest models of streamline trains

The mechanicaly minded people w i l l be able to witness the h u n -dreds of processes involved In the fabrication of motors and machines

The more scientific minded students have been given the opportunity to v iew wonders of Science i n the H a l l of Science and Education

We may strol l through a ha l l which is dedicated to exhibits of business machine and insur -ance companies The chemistry student may educate himself by v is i t ing the chemistry bu i ld ing where he w i l l be surrounded w i t h the latest and most interesting experiments

Every person v is i t ing the Fair should keep in mind the fact that color is the K i n g of the F a i r New color schemes grace the outside walls and al l i n -terior decorations in the foreign exhibits By night the Fair is a fa i ry city g lowing i n jeweled radiance by day we are stand-ing in the midst of a c i ty of t o -morrowmdashstrange but i n v i t i n g

Color has many uses i n the Fair among wh i c h is that of strengthening a structural ele-ment or an architectural accent

Each bui ld ing has a dominant rue determined by its location

Are you hungry Wel l w h y dont you go along w i t h the group which is v is i t ing the food ex-hibitions There are more than seventy great laboratories and thousands of scientists w i l l demonstrate the miracle of food chemistry There w i l l bo French food the famous Boston baked beans Albanian food biscuits from the Mason and and Dixon l ine and real I ta l ian spaghetti Mothers may obtain recipes of al l dishes served and so keep foreign foods in the American homes even after the t e rmina -tion of the Worlds Fair

Vis i t Hol land England and Cuba mdash A l l i n one day Lets al l become educated the pleasing waymdashGo to the Worlds Fair

Center and a Home Furnishing Bui ld ing Constitution H a l l and Court of States w i l l be offered as bait for American history s tud-ents and from Rainbow A v e -nue on an imaginative person could easily be on a tour of the w o r l d for almost every country w i l l be represented by native foods and pertinent displays I f hunger should overcome your better senses and the demand for food be more urgent than that of knowledge refreshments can be obtained for as l i t t l e as a dime or as expensively as you l ike w i t h a floor show included as an appetizer

The question of a saving on many tr ips to the fa i r is nicely taken care of for residents in the immediate v i c i n i ty of the fair Advance tickets are now on sale at a number of the department stores^ There are two types of tickets part icular ly advantageous to us in school The f irst a school c h i 1 d r e ns non - transferable twenty-admission tickets for two dollars I t requires the signature of the owner and appropriate school authori ty The second type a school teachers non-transfer-able twenty admission t icket for f ive dollars face value $15

I n closing I wish to relate an anecdote that perhaps w i l l aptly describe the feelings of many others as to the drawing powers of the two fairs a letter came the other day bearing the news that dur ing the summer months our small house w i l l become a sort of tourist camp for many f a i r - m i n d e d relatives and friends Dismayed at f i rst we f ina l ly found a solution to the problem and that to close up our house put up a for Rent sign in prominent view and go west to seemdashthe Golden Gate Exposi -t i on

1 Dont be backward and i n -vite the boys to the dancesmdashThen you w i l l never be one date less (Take i t f r o m me i t works l i k e a charm)

2 By al l means affect that per-sonal type of conversation That is-glide smoothly to that simewy swine and clamp the gum f i r m l y and ta lk This has its advantage as the v i c t i m w i l l be unable to hearmdashthus lett ing the f i rs t party move CLOSER

L i t t l e Go-getter Salt and Pepper note

We apprectiate your fr iendly advice but to this day the g i r l is suppose to remain the helpless creature

A t the mere mention of sports everyone is quite apt to t h i n k of Mary Muro whose sport achi-evements are innumerable Born i n Greenwich Connecticut i n 1921 she has l ived in Port a l -most a l her l i f e

I t would be an impossibil ity to l ist al l that has appeared on Marys sport calender She has however participated in a i l g ir ls sports A l l possible awards in hockey and basketball have been given her She has won the dis-t inct ion of being the champion badminton player in the school and twice the championship of the girls tennis bowed Marys way She has been captain of a number of the varsity teams and incidental ly she is also a member of the Celer ity

Strange as i t may seem Mary is planning to go into t ra in ing to become a nurse after graduation this June Another strange fact is that Mary actually has time for hobbies among which is the co l -lection of many scrap books Just for the sake of variety swimming and tennis are also listed as hobbies Getting up i n the m o r n -ing and doing homework some-how represent Marys most d i f f i -cut problems

racket i f i t could be called a racket is the monopolistic ac-t iv i t ies of a certain concern which operates on the railroads of this great nation This concern ped-dles papers on the Long Island trains but l i t t l e do the custom-ers of the rai lroad know that this concerns activities are na -t ionwide and of monopolistic proportions

This concern makes hundreds of dollars every day in the most ingenious manner First they go through the trains trains that are on long tr ips comprising sev-eral days and states sell ing cof-fee at ten cents for t w o cup-fulls The d in ing car on the trains sell coffee al twenty- f ive cents a cup Then this company sells sandwiches for a nickle apiece The d in ing car sells them for twenty- f ive cents A t night t ime this concern goes through the coaches r e n t i n g pi l lows to the patrons of the railroads As i t is almost i m -possible to sleep comfortably on a coach w i thou t a p i l low the sales are almost one hundred percent These pi l lows rent for twenty- f ive cents apiece On these pi l lows alone the concern makes f rom forty to fifty dollars a night on a good size t r a i n

I n the morning these pi l lows are collected and soap and a towel are sold for the sum of ten cents I f you would just stop to t h i n k how many people ride on a t r a i n when going on long distance trips such as vacations business honeymoons and tr ips to Reno you can w e l l imagine the amount of profit that this concern makes I t certainly is a very clever idear By the way wou ld any reader care to p u r -chase a s l ightly used towel read-ing U n i o n News Company

The gym was arrayed in und sea att ire and was about the job i n devorating done by P or Manhasset for the past year The l i ght ing effects were alsraquo very good though SOME people would have thought they were l i t t l e d i m

There was quite a stag I which kept the evening movl at a l ive ly pace and the boys The girls were supposed to everything but lead including for the refreshments afterwa

On the whole the dance p vided the best entertainment f lured around here for some and the people on committees f future dances here in Port certainly take a h i n t from M hasset on the thoroughness or nal i ty and smoothness w i t h whi the dance was presented

Ray (Window) Finlay finally got what hes been asking for Fr iday eve Use took h i m to the Manhasset Hen Hop and Satur day some snazzy i m - P o r t h i m to a Sorority dance Tsk H o w does he do it only other Port couple we Saturday eve was Brenda Ridi and B i l l ElTertz our hardy peren-nials

Upon a r r i v i n g at the dance the gir ls dug out the i r dollars and were given two program cards and lo ld to f i l l them both and then hand one to their The boys then stood s t i l l w their partners hustled aro settling their fates for the ning A f ter the gentlemen h anxiously scanned their cards the gir ls had snagged their p ners for the f irst set the started
