If you have had an opportunity to travel around western Oklahoma this spring you probably have noticed the fields of yellow flowers that replaced some of the fields of wheat. One of Kiwash Electric’s Board members said that over 100,000 acres in western Oklahoma were planted to canola this spring. The fields were especially noticeable on the drive from Watonga to Woodward, and around the Anadarko area as well.

Years ago, Oklahoma’s spring crop was primarily wheat, and cotton in the fall. In fact, many schools closed for several weeks in the fall so kids could help with picking cotton. One of the greatest incentives in life to gain an education is to drag a cotton sack up and down a cotton field for 2-3 cents per pound of spending money. Those crops are still dominant, however, it is now common to see fields of

soybeans, canola, sunflowers, sesame and corn. If you go to the grocery store and look at all the types of cooking oil you can see where the majority of these crops end up.

While spring always has a lot of color, as farmers search for alternative ways to provide income, one of the side effects will be even more colorful spring seasons in Oklahoma. I know many people suffer from allergies in the spring, I wonder if anyone is allergic to Canola? Who knows what new crops are in Oklahoma’s future?

Lighting SavingsRecently, the Supervisor of Transmission, Design & Construction, Eddie Childs requested the Maintenance Department change out the old ballast and light bulbs in his office to the newer ballast and new T8 fluorescent light bulbs.

The actual savings, based on the ballast ratings, amounted to 77 Watts per fixture. There are two in the office totaling 154 Watts. The 04957 office lights stay on approximately 20 out of 24 hours per day during the week, so the kilowatt (kWh) savings would be over 3 kWh/day. This is a significant savings that will make the new fixtures pay for themselves in short order; ballasts were $16.12/each and bulbs were $1.50/each.

Better light and less strain on eyes, well that is priceless.

How much of your paycheck should you be saving each week? Have you ever heard of the 50-30-20 rule? It basically says that you should limit your fixed expenses, like rent/mortgage, car payment, utilities, etc., to 50% of your income, spend 30% on discretionary expenses, like food and entertainment, and put 20% into savings. Sound like too much? Then start by saving 10% and work your way up! Saving something is better than nothing.

Some people consider saving to be something you do only at the end of the month. But you should break this habit and make it proactive at the beginning of the month. It is a great idea to be proactive about saving. Instead of waiting to save what you might have left over, make your savings automatic.

Another recommendation for someone who has recently met a goal, like paying off a student loan, would be to first, congratulate yourself on reaching a goal! Your next step should be to pay off any additional debts, like credit cards or other loans. Once you’re debt free, your next step should be to make sure you have an emergency fund set aside in case you lose your job or suffer an injury. A general rule of thumb is to plan to have 6-12 month’s income saved, depending on your monthly expenses and whether or not you own a home. Next, max out your retirement savings options. You can put up to $5,000 in an IRA this year, or you can contribute up to $17,000 in 2012 in your 401K. Source: feedthepig.org

Mitchell Signs Letter of IntentChickasha High School senior, John Mitchell, recently signed a NJCAA letter of intent to play college baseball at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa. Along with being excited about receiving a scholarship to play baseball, he intends on completing his general education requirements and then pursuing a degree in optometry.

ALTUS, Okla. – Recently, Al Keisler (father of PC Support Technician, Sherry Lindsey), traveled to Washington D.C. with a group of SW Oklahoma veterans. Frank Maloyed, an Altus man, sponsored an Oklahoma “Honor Flight” which took the veterans to the nation’s capital to see the country’s monuments and memorials. This free flight took off from Lawton-Fort Sill Regional Airport on May 4.

The plane carried close to 100 vets, plus 65 volunteers. Maloyed said that even if you are in a wheelchair, or you need a cane or an oxygen tank, they have you covered! Some of the places they visited included the WWII, Vietnam, and the Korean War Memorials. But perhaps even better than the sights, was a chance for everyone to swap old war stories.

Al served in World War II as a boatswain’s mate 3rd class, amphibious forces, USS Hendry APA-118 at Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Guam, Manila, Midway, Saipan, Japan and the South Pacific. Al is pictured in the photo of Honor Flight veterans, 7th from the left on the bottom row.

Representatives from eight WFEC distribution cooperatives recently attended a geothermal workshop at the GeoRanch in New Waverly, Texas, north of Houston.
