Unplugged Roulet Report July 20, 2012 One of the strengths of the cooperative network is that they all work together through the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives (OAEC) or the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) to legislatively lobby as a single group. Occasionally, these groups ask WFEC for lobbying help for some types of legislation. On occasion, I will ask our Communications staff to put together a fact sheet and information about how individual employees can also participate in these “grassroots type events”. An example is the recent communication about using the NRECA Take Action website to ask the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to withdraw its proposed New Source Performance Standards for Greenhouse Gases from power plants. This EPA action really has an impact on the future types of generation that are acceptable to build, and consequently plays a large role in determining future electric rates. It is totally each employee’s choice as to whether they feel comfortable participating in these “take action” requests. WFEC does try to provide information so that each of you can make an educated decision in determining your particular position. WFEC’s Communication staff does a great job in putting together information that is impartial and helpful. In the future, please take the time to read the information, educate yourself, and decide whether you can support the Cooperative position. Usually it only takes a few minutes to respond. You never know, your support could make a big difference.

UnpluggedRoulet Report

July 20, 2012

One of the strengths of the cooperative network is that they all work together through the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives (OAEC) or the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) to legislatively lobby as a single group.

This EPA action really has an impact on the future types of generation that are acceptable to build, and consequently plays a large

role in determining future electric rates.

The docks of Catfish Bay Marina in Kingston were lined with 150 children,110 councilors and 100 volunteers for Camp Cavett’s Annual Fishing Derby last week.

For 17 years, Camp Cavett has hosted hundreds of chronically ill children at Lake Texoma. But as volunteers and counselors both said it’s more than about catching fish. WFEC’s own Journeyman Station Technician Mark Palesano and his nephew, Jonathan are regular volunteers at this rewarding event.

Lani Shropshire has been a counselor at the Camp for two years and said Camp Cavett is more than a summer camp, it makes the children healthier.

“It’s all about the kids helping each other, getting through every situation. Growing and the courage that I see with these kids is amazing and the situations that they overcome.”

Sixteen year old Karina Keck has scoliosis and has been to Camp Cavett four times. She said camp rejuvenates her and reminds her how important life is.

“If you have illnesses, they don’t want you to give up on it, they want you to keep going and not let it stop you.”

Not all the campers caught fish, but they do all agree on one thing. “The kids get to be kids, they are not patients,” Shropshire said.

Pictured above is Mark Palesano and his nephew Jonathan, along with members of their fishing derby team, including Anabel (front row, left, and Dana (front row, center), and an unidentified counselor. Mark and Jonathan and their team won 1st and 2nd place trophies, with two carp over 13 lbs. Many thanks also to Lewis Gillette for the bait!

Should Summer Savings Be ForgotJuly is almost over, and while you may have started out the summer with savings strategies in full swing, some may have since fallen by the wayside. Before the back-to-school advertisements begin to fly, here are a few savings tips you can try today!

Power down: If it’s not in use, then turn it off. It’s especially important to really turn off your home computer. 75% of the energy used by home computers is used when the owner thinks the computer is turned off. “Sleep” does not equal off.

Go unplugged: If it’s plugged in, even if it’s turned off, it may still be drawing power. This is key for large appliances, like your TV. Recently, TVs passed refrigerators as the biggest energy drain in American homes. Your refrigerator needs to stay plugged in, your TV does not.

Move outside: Soak up the summer weather by spending as much time outside as possible. When you’re outside, you’re not using electricity through lighting, electronics, etc. Plus, cooking outside on the grill can help cut down on energy costs used cooking on the stove or in the oven every 10128 night.

Note: On days of extreme heat be sure to exercise summer safety. Bring a reusable water bottle with you when you’re headed out for some fun in the sun, and try to take water breaks at least three times per hour. Heat-related illnesses can cost you big bucks at the doctor, and keep you out of the sun for weeks.

New Arrival Welcome to the world Ilee Grace Crowder. She was born at 9:59 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17 at Comanche County Memorial Hospital in Lawton. She weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces, and was 21 1/2 inches long.
