  • The vision behind the Mother Vine was to create a courtyard installation that created spi-rals and curves of varying sizes throughout the yard, creating a modular design, providing mo-ments of shade, distilled light, moments that direct circulation and create spaces and pro-gram, and also moments that create seating and tables. The forms act as large vines and grown from walls and floors. As the large vines hit the floor, they branch out into smaller forms, creating more private experiences and also seating and tables for zones such as the beer garden or the beach zone. The material of the actu-al installation would be metal poling combined with weather proof, durable white fabric.

  • - The vision behind this project was to create a distinct separation be-tween the spaces of production and the spaces of representation and have them meet and transition at the point of the sculpture garden, situated be-tween the two blocks. The represen-tation L shaped block holds public and educational spaces such as the caf, reception, exhibition and auditorium while the larger block tower holds the private studio and office spaces. The idea behind the wave-like exterior was to create this appearance of a climb-ing/spiraling upward smooth flow of circulation, which is what is actually happening within the tower, as each level holds its own set of studios. This also allows each space to receive unique moments of natural light. The entire structure is built from layers of steel and glass, rectangular spaces rotated at various degrees.

  • - The playful form chosen for this educational institution, the form of the infinity symbol, was used to emulate the notion that knowledge is limitless through education. End-less, as is the flow of the symbol itself. The continuous flowing form embodies the idea of the endless accumulation of knowledge through ones life time. The infinity symbol form represents the link, or for better word, the unbreakable bond between the gain of knowledge through the potential and power of education, and therefore, the phrase learning is infinite, educa-tion never stops is expressed in the infinity symbol form of the school. The form of the building also allows for a continuous, free-flowing cir-culation within, allowing students to reach the numerous floors at each end of the building.

    - As indicated by the parti di-agram, the vision behind the design of this project was to introduce modular living to New Yorks public housing program. This was achieved by creating a vertical core (indi-cated in red in the diagram) that acts as a structural piece to the building that each pre-fabricated unit is attached to. This structural core piece also acts as a private interior cir-culation for each apartment as most are multiple floor units. The core also acts as a means of plumbing, housing modular compartments such as kitchen, storage or bath-room. The units thicker walls create opportunity for addi-tional storage space and fold-out furniture.

    - Envisioning the future: There were four primary objectives/issues that were focused on in this project. These objec-tives were: the waterfront park space, a park to connect the neighborhood to the waterfront, to create an attraction for sport, site-seeing, and conven-tions, for New Yorkers and vis-itors, boosting economic value to the surrounding area. Flood-ing and sea level rise: to create a levee barrier and to filtrate the incoming east river water. Urban Farming: the production of fresh/organic food, supply-ing and distributing locally and internationally boosting eco-nomic growth to the area. Pub-lic Transportation: connecting a public train service from close by MTA subway stations.

The schematic design pro-cess focused on experi-menting with rotated mass-ings at different angles in order to find the most efficient solution in main-taining consistent natural sunlight throughout the day, illuminating the librarys reading space, cutting down on energy use and increas-ing sustainability. The core glass atrium houses the cir-culation space and increas-es illumination throughout the building. The angle of the building not only in-creases light throughout the duration of the day but also opens up the corner of the block and creates a public pavilion, inviting in the local community.

Changing the culture of NYIT Manhattan, building reputation and global appeal through design. NYIT Manhattan may be NYITs secondary campus, however, it is the one, most important of them all, as in reality, it lives in the middle of the world. It is the campus most often seen by the general public, hundreds of thousands of people, passing by each day because of its prime location - Columbus Circle. Therefore the NYIT Manhattan campus should be the pride of the university, and essentially the heart of it aswell, as it has the potential to attract more publicity and attention to the NYIT brand. My thesis focuses on creating a more unified and interactive campus, meaning breaking down the socially restrictive characteristics of the vertical campus and eliminating the elevator as being the one meeting place in the campus. The goal is to create a campus that opens up to its students, where one can experience the social qualities of the horizontal/traditional suburban campus within a vertical urban site. Also, the campus embraces the urban fabric of its surrounding neighborhoods by incorporating the most symbolic elements of Midtown - Luxury Housing and the Arts of Lincoln Center.

    - common spaces + study areas- studio spaces + classrooms- floor to ceiling glass

    - the common spaces occure every 7 floors and they are located in between/among the learning block, meaning classrooms/studios and labs.

    - circulation within building is seen from outside of build-ing due to open staircases.

    - each educational floor (learn-ing block) is 10 ft tall while the common/meeting spaces reach 20 ft in height.

    - common/meeting spaces are floors that help eliminate the isloation of a vertical campus and provide large open meeting spaces for students to interact, relax, study and eat.

    - large staircases connecting these floors pro-vide seating also, creating places to sit, study, and take in the views of columbus circle.

    04

    - the pixel snake consists of large rectangular boxes spanning 25 by 50 in size and soaring to varying heights of 34 to 46

    - the boxes act as stacking pieces, just like the ones from the classic GameBoy game tetris.

    - as the pieces connect and expand, they form a snake like massing that wraps around and climbs the building, creating large communal spaces that adapt differently to everyfloor,

    - the snake essentially creates community spaces all over the cam-pus, bringing students and teachers together, providing spaces of study, leisure, and relaxation.

    - the luxury tower also has its own pixel block, located at the very middle of its core, as it provides a place for residents to receive exclusive privileges, such as access to infinity pools, and outdoor deck seating.

    - the snake climbs and wraps around the core resting on the floor plates, providing students and campus visitors with ample interactive community spaces, allowing for a more interactive campus culture.

    - program + circulation relationship // diagram shows how the spaces co-exist, forming a campus that opens up both vertically, horizontally + diagonally.

  • THESIS // RETH!NKING NYITRETHINKING THE URBAN CAMPUS

    - the solution: by creating diagonal spaces that dissect and penetrate the horizontal floor plates as they wrap and climb vertically through-out the campus, the vertical restrictive nature of the common office building is broken and therefore large open spaces of interaction are born, allowing the campus to achieve the social qualities of a traditional suburban campus in an vertical urban environment.
