When the going gets tough it can pay to take a step back from the daily grind so you can take a cold hard look at the business and how it is operating. It is a common mistake to concentrate on the smaller details and fail to see the bigger picture. Don't stick your head in the sand -‐-‐ confront a particular issue or problem head-‐on, and if necessary get others involved and ask them for their views on what is stopping the business performing as it should be.
Casey Pacifico and Melissa Dolan are prime examples of great members within Phi Beta Lambda. Their leadership, friendliness and passion for the organization and their friends within it are very apparent. However, it is their skills and mentorship that has led them to be the Members of the Month.
Cassandra Pacifico of Somerset, PA, entered PBL in the spring of her freshman year and has kept busy since. She served as an active member on both the Mini-‐Conference and Berg Cup team. Casey was also a great co-‐recruitment chair last spring! This past month Casey was able to share the knowledge that she has gained as a marketing guru with Burson-‐Marsteller and hosted our first ever Marketing Portfolio Workshop. There was great attendance and all enjoyed the event. Many members appreciated Casey’s insight and expertise and rushed home to make their own online portfolio! It was a great event that added a lot of value to our members’ personal branding. Thanks, Casey!
Melissa Dolan of Bethel Park, PA, entered PBL in the fall of her sophomore year. Mel became active in PBL very quickly and began shadowing for the position of Co-‐VP of Public Relations, a role she held during the following year. This past month Melissa held a workshop on consulting—a very hot topic in the business school these days. Mel used her expertise from her internship at Protiviti—where she can be found after graduation—to teach the younger members the ins and outs of the industry. There were many members in attendance that felt they gained much more knowledge about the industry than they had. Thanks, Mel for expanding members’ interests!
Congratulations to these two dynamic brunettes for being our members of the month! -‐ Alina Crisi

PBL Volunteers at Signature Chef Auction
November 5, 2013 marked the March of Dimes annual Signature Chef’s Auction, an event organized to raise money for the care of premature babies and to assist research efforts focused on the prevention of premature births. KDKA-‐TV’s Jon Burnett and Kristine Sorensen hosted the event. They provided attendees with pertinent information about the March of Dimes and helped garner bids and other donations throughout the night.
More than 10 Phi Beta Lambda members volunteered their time and talents to the event, helping identify bidders during the live auction and provide the lucky winners with their items. PBL members were excited to volunteer, especially after attending September’s Dinner for Dimes, where they became more aware of the March of Dimes mission and how it can impact those affected by premature births. Katie Hazelbach said, “It was really cool to see how so many people came together to support the cause.”
Attendees were able to enjoy delicious foods prepared by notable local chefs and bid on highly desirable items during the silent and live auctions, all while benefitting a good cause.
Chef Kate Romaine of E2 restaurant debuted her menu at the event, alongside 19 other chefs from the Pittsburgh area. Dishes included butternut squash soup, scallops with apple chutney sauce, pulled pork nachos, and a variety of delectable desserts. As attendees munched on these quality foods, they were able to bid on silent auction items. However, they only had a limited time to place their bids before a bell rang, signaling the close of silent auction tables and the beginning of the much-‐anticipated live auction.
VIP seats at a Penguins game, concert tickets, and winery trip for two were just a few of the items up for bid during the live-‐auction portion of the event. The auctioneer remained engaged with the audience as each item was presented, requesting bid amounts at record speed.
The Signature Chef’s Auction was quite a success and the March of Dimes is excited to start planning next year’s event, partnering with even more famous chefs and volunteers to help everything run smoothly throughout the night. – Rachel Cawley

How Corporate of You! PBL continues to help take CBA to the Next Level by offering its members ways to expand their personal experiences. The First Annual Corporate Day took place this past Friday, November 15, 2013. Brian McDonough and myself planned Corporate Day along with two members of Delta Sigma Pi, Jim Trout and Rob Wadsworth. This event took place from 1-‐5 in Mervis Hall. UPMC, EY, Target, Verizon, Enterprise, and the Pirates took turns presenting workshops on issues that they believe students in today’s business world need to focus on, ranging from diversity to developing a personal brand. These companies were chosen with the goal of encompassing all business majors while representing companies that are familiar to students.
The representatives were also available for networking between the workshops. For the last hour of the event, the company representatives held a panel for students to ask questions about anything from interviewing strategies to what employers look for most in student applicants. Additionally, a representative from Sony was present to take professional headshots for LinkedIn. Overall, around 100 students were in attendance, which was better than what the planning team and I had hoped for. From speaking with a variety of students after the event, the most popular part of the event was the panel at the end. Also, students appreciated the range of companies that were present at the event. The company representatives also commented on the amount of freshmen that they had the opportunity to meet at the event. CBA pushes underclassmen to become involved with companies as early as possible to establish a lasting relationship. The First Annual Corporate Day was an overall success for not only the planning team and myself, but also for the students and companies in attendance. – Jess Snyder
Mr. Greek Olympian The third annual Mr. CBA competition took place this past Thursday night, and it was definitely one to remember! This year’s theme was Greek Olympics, with 25% of the funds raised being donated to the Special Olympics of Allegheny County. The night kicked off with the men performing a group dance choreographed by PBL member Morgan Mohney! The competition then heated up as the men competed in the remaining events including the bucket challenge, the dean’s challenge and the runway portion. In the end, all of men battled bravely, but Tyler Houpt outshined the rest, and walked away with the title of Mr. CBA 2013. Before the night came to an end, Dean Murrell announced that she was going to double the amount raised for the selected charity, allowing us to give $800 to the Special Olympics of Allegheny County! Thank you to everyone that attended the event and especially to anyone that helped before hand to make it such a success! -‐ Hope Murray

A Story Basted in Love Sharon, a 21.23-‐pound turkey, and her darling Gilbert, a slightly slimmer 21.00-‐pound turkey awaited in the freezer section last Thursday morning, unsuspecting they’d be separated later that day. After much deliberation between Colleen MacDonald and Allison Dobos over which turkey best suited PBL’s hungry needs, they decided on Sharon. Sharon sat in 311’s infamous freezer until Saturday afternoon, the same time that Gilbert, ironically, was purchased by Alina Crisi.
Team Turkey, which consisted of Allison, Mark Doman, Steve Saed, and Ted Hages, gathered at 311 for the most exciting mentor team event of the year (closely followed by Fuel and Fuddle, of course). After unwrapping Sharon to discover that her cavity wasn’t fully defrosted, Team Turkey had to go in with the ice pick to excavate the rest of the frozen remains and to remove the bag of “turkey innards,” Mark’s favorite activity of the night, along with filling Sharon’s cavity with lemons. Luckily, Steve proved to be the resident Martha Stewart expert, and provided the team with helpful hints and tips on how to fix the turkey, which included lathering Sharon in butter and spices. After the fridge was cleared, Sharon was laid to rest for her final night and the mentees said their last goodbyes.
The next morning at the crack of dawn, Allison babysat Sharon as she baked and browned beautifully until team members Bryan Bradley, Callie Rosenfeld, and Feargal Gilmore, and again Mark, made their appearances. Feargal’s moral support and cheerleading carried the team to success, along with Bryan and Mark’s muscles to pull the 21.23-‐pound baby out of the oven. With the rain pouring down throughout Oakland, the transportation proved to be difficult. Since Sharon’s obesity was nothing compared to what Bryan usually benches at Trees, he was able to carry her to Sennott. Allison, his personal umbrella holder, ensured that he and Sharon stayed (mostly) dry.
Once Team Turkey arrived at Sennott, Gilbert was waiting in matching form (dead). While it wasn’t exactly the reunion Sharon and Gilbert were hoping for, it was a beautifully crafted Romeo and Juliet ending (or something like that). The only casualties—besides Sharon and Gil—consisted of a few slight burns and turkey grease spilling down Bryan’s leg. Overall, PBL Thanksgiving and the turkey adventures were a success! As Mark eloquently said, “wife us up!”

Peter’s Pub was taken by storm last Friday night as a lively crowd of over 80 members and their lovely plus-‐1s danced the night away at the annual Snowball. As senior marketing extraordinaire Casey Pacifico put it, formal is one of the greatest social events, calling it “an opportunity to de-‐stress and remember what a big family we really are.” Sophomore Mario Nicolia also sung praises, dubbing formal the “best night of his college career.” In addition to some fresh new dance moves being put on display, the fashion world was rocked last Friday by the debut of several new trends. Defying all traditional customs, junior Greg Horvat stole the show in a gray Abercrombie polo with a striped pink tie—a bold move, but he pulled it off. Upon being asked for comment on his first PBL Formal, freshman Doug Cannon hesitantly responded, “I had fun!” As a freshman, I couldn’t agree more—my first Formal was a great time. -‐ Mark Doman

Not-‐so-‐mini Case Competition On Friday November 8th, nine teams participated in a Mini-‐Case Study Competition. Three companies participated in the event, creating three separate competitions within the event. Three teams were assigned to each company, which included Deloitte, UPMC, and Hershey. Each team was given twenty minute to prepare for their presentations. Given only the case, a pen, and two notecards, participants had to analyze the case and create a seven minute presentation. After the twenty minutes were up, the participants presented to their respective judges and had to be prepared for three minutes of follow up questions that critiqued their recommendations. After all the presentations were finished, the judges deliberated for several minutes to pick their winners. The winners for UPMC were Josh Ordos and Malinda Scott. The winners for Deloitte were David Barr and Jackie Benzino. The winners for Hershey were Alex Kanner and Brian Pudlo. The judges then gave out their overall feedback to their participants and networked about their companies. – David Barr
Phi Beta Lambda formal was a great time. Everyone was dressed very classily, from dresses to suits to Greg Horvat in his edgy polo, tie, and sunglasses-‐indoors look. Peter’s Pub was a good place to have formal, although getting an X marked on my hand while walking into a bar was a little discouraging. The dance floor was crazy, people were throwing out dance moves like there was no tomorrow. I thought it was great because everyone seemed to be having a great time and was really enjoying the moment, no matter who they were dancing with. I think it was the best social event that I’ve been a part of so far in my short PBL career. -‐ Steve Saed
