President’s Report I would like to start off by saying congratulations to all club members and entrants of this year’s Chev Convention for making it such an enjoyable and fun filled weekend.

Without your participation it would not have been so successful. As part of the Convention committee, and your President, I was very proud of the way members, en-trants, and family members not only behaved but also got into having fun for the entire weekend. This is what our great club is all about.

With so many challengers leading up to the event it was great to see it all unfold. The weekend started off great (except for a really cool wagon on the Westgate!) with a nice quite cruise up to Ballarat in near perfect weather. Most of us got there early to arrive at a great holi-day park to set up registration so we weren’t flat out trying to do it after our cruise to Fast Lane Speed shop. With a small mishap of rooms for registration it went well then we were off to Daniel and Ebony Cas-ser’s shop for a great tour.

Daniel not only cleaned up all night and most of the day Friday but he also shut the shop for the day to allow us to be welcomed into his shop of absolute skill and mind-blowing workmanship in which I thank you greatly Daniel.

Next on the agenda was back to the registration at the Welcome Stranger Holiday Park. In the years I’ve been at the club, I’ve never seen the social side of rego so big and spread out as it was on Friday night. It was a great gathering of members and entrants which went on late in the night for all to enjoy. Can I thank Allan and Bill for the bbq’s , and Mick Bugeja for helping at registration, and the over kind staff of the Welcome Stranger Holi-day Park for their experienced hos-pitality.

The next day was the drags. The day went extremely well with many cars and purpose built drag cars of all sorts. It was a great crowd pleaser event with many thanks go-

ing to the Ballarat Drag Racing Club for hosting the event on our behalf.

It was great to see many entrants going down the ¼ for the first time and the rain held off until the last two finals (in which a white and green 57 was lined up and ready to go but had to be called back, bad luck Stevo!).

Next was the dinner and band night at the Trotting Track. With some confusion on the bus bookings (the club hired mini bus) we all managed to get to the venue. Great tucker and excellent music gave us all a great night out. The Trotting Track should be commended for their set up and the bands were awesome.

Thanks to Tony Anastasio for once again organising and entertaining us in a massive way. At the end of the night we all squeezed into the mini bus (and I mean Squeezed!) and headed back to the Holiday Park for some quiet ales.

Can I just give out a very big thank you to Bill for driving the hired bus all night as this was a demanding job for the week-end and someone had to do it and Bill put his hand up for it several months ago with no questions asked. You’re a legend Bill!

The next day saw the show and shine at the Trotting Track. What a great turnout! With around 150 Chevs and other makes in the sepa-rate car park the place looked a treat.

Congratulations to all the trophy winners and thank you to all the participants on the day for making it a great day.

Thank you to Bill once again for organising the Judging, and thank you to all the offers and help on the day which made the commit-tees job a lot easier to organise.

Then it was back to the Holiday Park for some well-deserved ales with the members who stayed the Sunday night (yes more sausages to top up the previous night’s in-takes!), thanks Tarik for supplying

the meat! What a great week-end!

Now for the down fall. Due to many seats not filled on the night of the dinner as anticipated, Bad weather on Sunday in Melbourne (there were many groups of cars organising a day trip up on Sunday) and bad gate takings, also weather related, our overall finances suffered and we did not make the money we had hoped to make.

We can go on and on about the rea-sons why but rest assured we will profit larger next time and I’m hop-ing we will have a equal if not better Convention next up. I’m just wrapt that everyone who has contacted me not only by phone but also e-mail, all said they had a great time and can’t wait until Ballarat 2015 (thanks for the support, Three of us needed that lift!).

Thank you all for the support during and after the convention, and a spe-cial thankyou goes out to a bunch of guys who I really liked working with on this event (and it may not have been so successful without them!) is as follows: David Desira, Jeff Wilson, Karl Wakartschuk, Glenn Rulach, Bob Stertern-Gill. To the sponsors: Cruzin magazine, Shannons, Air ride, Aussie Desert Coolers, American Suspension and Driveline Parts, Fastlane Speed Shop, Clayton Holden Wreckers, Super Trick Differentials, The Radia-tor Workshop, Font p/L, and Growe Transport for their loyal support.

And to all the Members of the great-est car club in the world, The 55-56-57 Chevrolet Club of Victoria.

“Drive ‘em hard”,

Greg Rowe .

Member’s Report - Mick Bugeja

Ever since I bought my 57 Chev in 2008 to restore I have been itching to get it to the convention. This year was the year! I’d been to the Saturday drags previously, but this would be the first year that I would be there for the whole weekend with my finished car, and the first year that Sarah and Mitchell would attend.

The weekend began for me meeting a few other members at the Rockbank service station on the Western Free-way, from there we cruised on towards Ballarat. With an easy check in at the Welcome Stranger Holiday Park (including an upgrade!) I was well on the way! After settling in, we cruised down to Fast Lane Speed Shop for a tour. There was lots of different makes and models of cars, but what really caught my eye were the FC Holden and the early Falcon Sedan, they had lots of modifications. The owner had a 1955 Chev drag car in the shop, but I was disappointed that it didn’t make it down to the track the following day as I would have loved to see it in action! Once the tour was finished we all cruised back to the Holiday Park via Ballarat’s main drag. I have to say that we turned a few heads.

I offered to help out with the Registra-tion for the weekend, it was busy and we sold lots of merchandise and raffle tickets that night. This was then fol-lowed by the sausage sizzle and a few quiet (!) beers.

Saturday morning started with more registrations for those who couldn’t make it the night before and selling more raffle tickets. I then cruised with other members to Ballarat Drag Rac-ing club which was located at the air-port. I was so excited at this point to give my car a run. With scrutineering completed, John and I got ready to run our cars against each other. I must admit, I have never drag raced before,

so I was a little unsure of what was to come. I was off to a good start with a burn out. Then once I worked out how to stage the car, I took off at the green light with a slow reaction time (but hey it was my first go!). I manually changed the gears not knowing where the finish line was. After I completed the first run I was hooked. After a quick feed, John and I went back for seconds. I improved on my first race with a better burn out and reaction time, beating John again. After setting my qualifying time, my next race was against Charlie in his 65 Chev. I won as Charlie ran faster than his nomi-nated time, so I was into the next round. I narrowly missed out against Steve Peterson and my day was over. The rain then hit not long after this, but unfortunately before the final could be raced.

Once back at the Holiday Park the weekend was in full swing. Sarah and Mitchell then arrived and settled in quickly before we all got ready for the Dinner Dance. It was well thought of to organise a courtesy bus for us so that those who wanted a drink didn’t need to worry about how they would get back to the Holiday Park. When we arrived the evening was already well underway. The drinks were flow-ing and we able to catch up with other members before our meals were served. Sarah and I were very im-pressed with the standard of the food and service at the Ballarat and District Trotting Track. After not winning the raffle we relaxed (we’d managed to get Mitchell to sleep in his pram) and en-joyed the entertainment. We then took advantage of the courtesy bus once again and arrived back safely (thanks Bill).

It was an early start (too early for those who’d enjoyed last night’s festivities too much!) and we were back off to the

Trotting Track for our breakfast. We had been expecting a bacon roll, but to our surprise, breakfast was a big buffet that we took full advantage of.

With the Chev parked we offered our help to Rowie and Phoebe by manning the merchandise stall. Nearly every-one who approached us enquired about the Hoodie’s. With the unex-pected cold weather these had been a big hit Friday night and so none were left. I hadn’t even managed to get one for Sarah! After a while we were re-lieved and had a wander around to look at what cars had entered.

There were a lot of quality cars on show, but unfortunately it seemed as if the weather had turned people off as number appeared down on previous conventions. Sarah quite liked the 56 Maroon/Silver hardtop. Luckily the rain held off so the band was able to set up outside near to the display area. Again we were unlucky with the raffle (thanks Don Neal!) and we were onto the awards. I was surprised to come away with the President’s Choice award but extremely happy about it. Once the awards were over we helped to pack up the stall and made our way back to the Holiday Park. For those who stayed the Sunday night we enter-tained ourselves by watching the Aus-tralian Grand Prix on the big screen followed by a BBQ and a couple of celebration beers.

And so that completed my first Con-vention weekend. Sarah had more fun than she thought she would and was impressed at how family friendly the weekend was, so she is looking for-ward to the next convention. Overall, I had good fun at the drags and a great time seeing car club members and catching up with everyone.

Member’s Report - David Desira

The 10th Chevrolet Convention has come and gone, if you weren’t part of it you missed a great event, with the new location and modified for-mat working a treat.

Friday morning arrived with great weather on the horizon. Rowie and Karl had planned to get to Ballarat early in an attempt to do some pre-liminary setting up, but Karl’s tail-shaft had other ideas by letting go just out of Melbourne. With Karl stuck on the side of the road with a tow truck on the way, Rowie car-ried on, on his own.

Others including Steve Peterson, Alan, Mike Bugeja, Don Neal, the Kendalls, Jeff Wilson (in his newly finished 55) and myself met at the BP servo in Rockbank to cruise into Ballarat together. The cruise to Ballarat was a quick one, arriving with enough time to check in and do some basic setting up before the cruise to Fast Lane Speed Shop.

A group of about 25 cars took off to cruise to Daniel Cassar’s speed shop. The turn out was brilliant, with the street full of Chevs and the workshop full of punters drooling over some of the great projects Daniel and his crew were currently working on. Daniel really went out of his way to make us feel wel-come, putting his business on hold to show us around. The quality of the cars in his workshop and the array of products in his showroom was first class with more than one of us wanting to take one of the many display engines home for a future project.

Registration and a sausage sizzle were held at the Big Four Welcome Stranger caravan park, which worked well. The layout worked brilliantly with the registration room, bbq area and adjacent lawns packed with members, entrants and classic cars. The warm night

had loads of people out on the lawns sharing a few drinks and snags, what a great party atmos-phere. Thanks to Alan Smithson and crew for the great job on the bbq’s keeping everybody fed. Meanwhile Jeff, Rowie, Glenn, Mike and David were kept busy signing up entrants and selling the merchandise. Mike must have been a salesman in another life, as there wasn’t a person who left reg-istration without buying a few extra raffle tickets, shirt or hoodie!

Saturday saw many at the Ballarat Drags early hoping to get in a few runs. The Ballarat Drag Club ran a great event, with the mix of con-vention cars, local drag club mem-bers and others displaying and rac-ing a great range of cars. The eighth mile format worked well with minimum waiting between runs. Rohan Hutson and Alan Smithson were on a mission doing multiple passes throughout the day. Mike Bugeja and John Xidis ran their cars on the track for the first time, quickly coming to grips with the concept and getting the bug to go again and again. Brian Bud, Tim Perrin and Karl were all out having a go, with mixed results. Steve Pe-terson ended up in the finals but the rain that had been threatening all day finally fell, cutting short the last couple of runs before a winner could be decided.

The dinner was held at the trotting track with about 140 turning up for a fine meal and jive to the tunes from the two great bands. Tony An-astasio’s band put on a great show with Tony displaying his balancing skills atop his big bass while play-ing a wicked tune, just brilliant.

The dance floor was buzzing most of the night, with lots of fun had by many, not forgetting Rowie who had all the good moves. Special thanks to Bill Duyvestyn on the day

for kindly offering not only to bus many of the people between the caravan park and the dinner but also for driving the women around during the day while the boys were out at the drags having a play.

The committee guys were up early to set things up for the Sunday Show n Shine. Entrants started roll-ing in from around 8:00 and were treated to a kings breakfast in the function room directly above the show arena. Arranging parking in the new venue went smoothly with great support from the local Mens’ Shed team and a handful of dedi-cated members including Michael Kendall, Peter Liston and Don Neal. The Weather Gods were playing with us, giving us the cold-est day in two months. With a max temp of only around 15C and rain in Melbourne, the numbers of an-ticipated day entries and spectators were lower than hoped for but the atmosphere nonetheless was fan-tastic. The layout of cars, with the Kids jumping castle and trade stands all in close proximity worked really well. The oval show arena with some of the top show cars on display looked an absolute treat and generated many compliments from entrants and spectators alike.

The merchandise stand was set up in a prominent possie (albeit in a wind tunnel!) and did a steady trade throughout the day. Thanks to Mike & Sarah and Bob & Juli who manned the stand for a good portion of the day along with a few other members who held the fort from time to time.

Car awards and the raffle were an-nounced around 2:00. The raffle had a last minute rush on the tick-ets with our own Don Neal taking out the first prize of the huge tool kit. (I know where I’m going next time I need to service my car!)
