Friend Elementary Celebrates the 100th Day of School!Tuesday, January 27th was the 100th day of school and the elementary
students celebrated 100 days of learning in fine fashion! Here are some of the happenings in the elementary classrooms:
Kindergarten- Kindergarten celebrated the 100th day of school on Tuesday, January 27, 2014. Our day was filled with celebration in Kindergarten. Here are some of the things we did: made a snack with 100 things, wrote to 100, wrote 100 words, made a 100th day crown, made a Fruit Loop necklace with 100 things, did vari-ous exercises for 100 seconds each, and had a lot of fun! We are excited to 100 days smarter!!
1st Grade Celebrated being "100 days brighter" through several activities! A favorite of Miss Wall's is hav-ing all of her students decorate their own cape with 100 of something and then they wear it for the 100th day! First graders also painted 100 gum balls onto a craft made gumball machine, made a necklace out of 100 Froot Loops, wrote from 1 to 100, hunted for 100 Hershey Kisses around the classroom and much more. It is im-portant to help students recognize they are 100 days brighter and to see how far they have come in 100 days at school!
2nd grade-The 2nd grade classroom was filled with fun activities focusing around the number 100. The after-noon was spent in small groups doing various projects. These projects included $100 writing, building a struc-ture out of 100 legos, finger painting 100 finger prints, 100 seconds of exercises, pictures of ourselves at the age of 100, searching the room for 100 chocolates and much more. What a fun afternoon to celebrate being 100 days smarter!
The 3rd graders did some fun 100th day activities. They started by doing a Math puzzle picture, colored the even and odd numbers to make the number 100, walked 100 steps from our classroom, and used 100 to make a picture. Some students were very creative using the 100 to make pictures of birds, dogs, people, monster trucks, and more. The day ended by making the number 100 with cookies. 3rd graders are 100 days smarter!!
4th Grade- The one hundred dollar bills came out in the 4th grade, as each student was given $100 and then had to write about how they would spend it. They also each brought in 100 items to sort and group. Some of these items were edible!
5th Grade- The 5th graders celebrated by writing stories about what they will be like when they are 100 years old. They drew portraits of their 100 year old selves and dressed up as if they were 100 years old. Math and science problems us-ing the number 100 were solved and they also found 100 words with prefixes and/or suffixes. A 100 day snack was also enjoyed by the class.
6th Grade- Could 100 days equal $100.00? Sixth graders used their imaginations and their generous spirits to write what they would do if they had a $100.00 to spend on someone else. Ideas included hiring a servant for Mom, flowers for a teacher, tickets to a NE basketball game for a friend, a new guitar for a brother, and many more.

To The Parents of Friend Elementary Students, January 23, 2015
I want to take a moment to wish our fourth grade class good luck next week as they take the NeSA State Writ-ing Test. The test will be given on January 27th and 28th in the fourth grade classroom during the morning. The students have been working extremely hard preparing for this test. They have practiced writing personal narra-tives using the various writing components. Please make sure that your child has plenty of rest and has a good breakfast. This writing test is important and we want all students to do their very best!Next Friday January 30th at 2 p.m. in the old gymnasium is our first annual Elementary Celebrity Bulldog Tal-ent Show. We have 15 amazing acts and the performers range from preschool-8th grade. It is free of charge and the public is welcome to attend. Please plan on supporting the wonderful young talent we have at Friend Public School. A MANDATORY dress rehearsal for the performers will be held on Sunday January 25th at 2 p.m. in the old gym. The elementary student council will be passing out programs, seating patrons and serving refresh-ments as a Community Involvement project. Way to go Bulldogs!! The carnival is scheduled for Friday evening March 20th from 6-9 P.M. Everyone is encouraged to at-tend. All friends, family members and surrounding schools are invited. It is going to be an amazing event!!! Thirty games, delicious food, petting zoo, bounce house and obstacle course are a few of the scheduled activi-ties. Anyone interested in volunteering their time that evening to help run an activity, please contact Mrs. Dick-inson at (402) 947-2781. A baked potato bar is being planned by the elementary student council for the Diller/Odell game on February 13th. The proceeds from the fundraiser will help fund some activities at our carnival. A letter will be coming home soon regarding the details. As I visit individual classrooms I see some exciting happenings:Our Preschool and Instructional Kindergarten students are busy learning their letters, working on patterns and just having fun learning!!I Kindergarten students are becoming wonderful readers. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to listen to them daily read their take home stories to me. First grade is busy this week with MLK activities and much more, while second grade is writing stories and displaying them in the hallway for all to enjoy and their reading fluency is amazing. Third grade is working together on reading a Laura Ingalls Wilder book and completing book activities. Some fifth and sixth graders have been working on getting ready for the fifth/sixth grade Quiz Bowl on March 5th. Fifth grade is also focusing on atoms, protons, neutrons, electrons and the periodical table in science. Sixth graders are busy in their reading and language book Mirrors and Windows. They are learning some difficult math skills and practicing for the upcoming MAP and NeSA tests in March and April. Using the application process and writing down reasons for your answer is promoting higher level thinking. Mrs. Eigsti is working hard to get these students ready for the transition to the secondary level of education. Fourth grade has been busy preparing for the State Writing Test. I wish them luck and know that they will do their best!!!!
