Better Tainan?

Tainan City and Tainan County will merge on the December 25th, 2010. An era is about to begin.

After Wusantou Reservoir, National Monument "Former Tainan Watercourse" is the second one in Tainan County being certified as a world civil engineering heritage by Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE). The certification was granted by Sakata Kenji, the Chairman of JSCE on December 12.

Since "Former Tainan Watercourse" is a highly historical-valued civil engineering heritage, Sakata Kenji wants not only to preserve the facility, but also to improve the amicability between Taiwan and Japan by granting the certification.

Hamano Yashirou, a Japanese engineer who led the construction of "Former Tainan Watercourse" since 1912, is farsighted; As a milestone in civilizing public health in Taiwan, "Former Tainan Watercourse" helps maintaining people's health by starting to supply clean tap water and reducing the spread of diseases, indicated by Su Huanzhi, the Mayor of Tainan County.

"Former Tainan Watercourse" made a considerable economic contribution to the development of Tainan, said by Su Huanzhi, the Mayor of Tainan County.

For example, Hayashi Hyakkaten (林百貨店), the very second department store in Taiwan, also nicknamed "The Five Floors" (五層樓仔), is a modernized department store thanks to the direct water supply from "Former Tainan Watercourse".

"Former Tainan Watercourse" was originally the source of water and restricted for public. In 2002, it was validated as a County Monument by Tainan County Government after the promotion by professors of NCKU. In 2005, it was validated as a National Monument by Ministry of the Interior and Council for Cultural Affairs; it is the very first National Monument in Tainan County.
