For a new running convert like me, I find your magazine a veritable trove of runninginfo and essentials. Its sleek and glossy layout makes it an easy-read without going
overboard on ads. Your concept of featuring guest coaches and celebrit ies is also worthcommending. I particularly enjoyed your inspir ing article on Drew Arellano. If a busyshowbiz personality like him can find time to compete, I see no excuse why I myself canttake this hobby to a higher level.

WHO WOULD HAVETHOUGHT THAT ANIDE LEON DREADED
RUNNING YEARS AGO?Yes, Ani de Leon, the first Filipina to
wave the Philippine flag at the IronmanWorld Championships in Hawaii. TheAni who coaches at running clinics andmult ispor t clubs. The very same Aniwho hoards podium finishes in local and
international races, whether in runningor multisport.
The 34 year-old Ani, who was aswimming varsity member during herschool days, was good in the water, butdreaded the weekly runs mandated intheir training program.
It took a while for me to love
running, she giggles. After graduatingfrom college, I needed to take upsomething that was competitive, becauseafter college you dont really have any
swimming competition to join apartfrom collegiate meets. Most of myfr iends, including my sister Sinag shesreally the first one to get into the sportin the family were into triathlonalready, so they told me to give it ashot.
Soon, the running-phobic Ani foundherself grudgingly, however trainingfor running. The swim she didnt have
to exert much effort into, the bikejust a bit of training, but the run wassomething she had to pay a lot ofattention to. Eventually, Ani learned tolove the spor t, thanks to an Australiancoach named Tony Benson who trainedher for two months and gave hera program which she meticulously
followed. Eventually, her effor ts paid off.I consult him every so often, she says.Add to that a disciplined diet and fitnessregimen supplements and gels from

Hammer, the right amount of sleep, and refraining from late night-outs
and booze and Ani soon foundherself in good running shape.
Now, Ani is a running coachfor corporate-sponsored runningclinics and clubs, and also theprogram director for the SuperTri Kids a program aimed atimmersing children into multisport
and Pia Cayetanos Pinay InAction program.
For Ani, being a good coachdoesnt equate to being a goodathlete. A good coach knowsand understands her students. Iftheyre tinatamador feeling out ofit sometimes, I understand that; Ive
been there. But, Im here to help;youre here to commit.Undeniably, Ani happens to be
both. Apart from being a formermember of the national triathlonteam, and for consistently placing inlocal and international multisportraces, she is also a formidablefigure in the running circuit in thePhilippines. The petite lady with herstrong, stocky build dashes to the

podium at any given road race disproving herself when she once
told herself that running was herweakest suit.
A runners journey almostalways has a tough beginning. ButAni, despite her achievementsin the running and multisportcircuit, admits the follies of herfirst foray into the multisport
scene, and overcame her initialprejudice against running throughher commitment to improve herperformance. Now I love it! Ireally do, she gushes.
Ani explains that the effort, thecommitment, and the resolve shehad when she decided to run madeher love the sport so much. Thinkof it as an investment I investedtime and effort into research, intogetting proper coaching, into a lotof things, and it eventually paysoff. Ani might have ran countlessmarathons already, but the journeyto loving the spor t was much, muchlonger. After all, love is not a merefeeling it is a decision.

QCAN I RUN A MARATHON WITH LESS THAN A YEAROF RUNNING UNDER MY BELT?
ASure you can. To run a marathon, you need a minimum ofsix months running experience. Other factors such as your
athletic background, training program, and dedication must beconsidered to determine your success.
Having said that, however, my advice to you is this: Wait a little longer beforeplunging into a marathon. The short duration of your training may not build yourendurance enough to give you a strongfinish. You may earn bragging rights tofinishing all 42kms, but your run may be tiresome, painful or worse, traumatic due tothe lack of training. Conversely, if you gradually build your mileage base, you increase
your chances of finishing strong, injury-free, and with a smile on your face.Coach Rio de la Cruz is a personal coach, former coach of the U.P. Track team, and headcoach of the Nike Training Clinic. He also organizes running events through his company,Finish Line. Coach Rio recently qualified 2010 Boston Marathon with a time of 3:05.
