The unlikely combination of a famous hat manufacturer and a university produced a novel nickname for Stetson University. The athleticteamsarecalled“Hatters,”reflectingthe university’s associationwith John B.Stetson, maker of the well-known Stetson hats. It all began in 1883 when Henry DeLand founded the DeLand Academy. Three years later, after a disastrous freeze affectingthe citrus industry leftDeLand in financialdistress, Stetson, who had a winter home in DeLand, became interested in the school. At Deland’s request, Stetsonwasmadechairman of the Board of Trustees in 1889 and the university was renamed in his honor. Stetson University fieldedthefirst football teamin Florida in 1901. The name “Hatter”wasusedthenandis still in use today.

Nov. 20, 2013 • Daytona Beach, Fla.Stetson (3-2) ............................................... 77Bethune-Cookman (1-3) .............................. 63

A decisive 16-0 run midway through the second half lifted visiting Stetson to a 77-63 victory over Bethune-Cookman. Sasha Sims scored a career-high 28 points while freshmen Brianti Saunders (18 points) and Amber Porter (16 points) registered career-high point totals of their own. Stetson also completed a busy stretch of four games in six days with a 3-1 mark.

Coach Bria: “We look so much better than we did even a week ago. I am very pleased with our progress. Honestly, I am pleasantly surprised. We have come along a little further than where I thought we would be at this point and time. However, our main goal is to be a good team in January and February, and we just have to keep improving.”

Stetson connected on 18 of its 21 free throw attempts.

Coach Bria: “I thought overall for about 30 minutes we played a heck of a game. It is not the result that I wanted, but I am completely encouraged. We rebounded very well, and I thought overall we presented some match-up problems for (Oklahoma). I am pleased with our effort.”

Jama Sharp scored 14 points and added a career-high 10 assists for her second career double-double. Cherisse Burris (13 points), Amber Porter (12 points), and Brianti Saunders(10points)alsoreacheddoublefigures.

Coach Bria: “I thought we were better from our last game. If we get better every game, we are going to be OK. We rebounded the ball much better and we just had a lot more effort on the glass. I thought we did a great a job of only giving them one shot. Stephen F. Austin came back and cut the lead and we could have folded, but we made some plays down the stretch and I was really proud of our kids.

Game43

Nov. 16, 2013 • Nacogdoches, TexasNorth Carolina A&T (2-1) ........................... 77Stetson (1-2) ................................................ 84

Stetson fell 73-68 to North Carolina A&T to close the Preseason WNIT. The Hatters shot 54.5 percent from the floor, but committed 26 turnovers and surrendered17 offensive rebounds to the Aggies. Stetson trailed by four at halftime but used an 8-0 run out of the locker room to take a 45-41 lead. The Hatters still led by four at the 11:36 mark, but the Aggies fought back and built a five-pointleadwithunderfourminutestoplay.Stetsonclosed the gap to one down the stretch but would pull no closer.

Coach Bria: “We didn’t execute offensively the entire second half. (North Carolina A&T) did a really good job, their defense is hard to play against, but we just threw the ball away. We had entirely too many turnovers, and we gave up entirely too many rebounds. When you turn the ball over and you are not rebounding, you are probably not going to win.”

Game44

Nov. 18, 2013 • DeLand, Fla.Indiana State (2-2) ....................................... 74Stetson (2-2) ............................................... 90

Behind a 55-point second-half scoring effort, Stetson rolledto90-74victoryoverIndianaStateintheHatters’home opener. Sasha Sims led five Hatters in doublefigureswith24points. The Hatters also reached 90 points for the first time thisseasonandshot47.5%fromthefloor.

Coach Bria: “We played a lot better and a lot more in sync. Indiana State is a good team and they are well-coached. We knew we had to play well. We had a lot of good energy today. I thought we handled their pressure really well.”

Game46

Nov. 29, 2013 • Tallahassee, Fla.Stetson (3-3) ................................................ 49Florida State (5-1) ...................................... 79

Sasha Sims scored 16 points and Jama Sharp added 10, but Stetson fell 79-49 to host Florida State at the Donald L.TuckerCenter.ThelosssnappedStetson’stwo-gamewin streak. An early 14-0 run by Florida State put the Hatters down early, but Stetson climbed back to within nine at halftime and to within six early in the second half. However, the Hatters would connect on just six fieldgoals the rest of the way.

Coach Bria: “In the first half I thought we played as tough as anyone could against them. I thought for the first six minutes we just weren’t used to their size. We couldn’t see and we turned the ball over, and that hurt us. In the second half we scored early, but they went on a run and we just couldn’t score. They wore us down a little bit inside.”

Dec. 2, 2013 • Tallahassee, Fla.Stetson (4-3) ............................................. 101Florida A&M (5-3) ........................................ 66

Freshman Brianti Saunders scored a career-high 30 points on 11-for-15 shooting as Stetson completed its two-game Tallahassee road swing with a resounding 101-66 victory over host Florida A&M. The Hatters shot 59% from the floor and surpassed the 100-pointplateauforthefirsttimesince1989.Saundershitfourthree-pointers in the game, all in the first half, to helpStetson get off to a 55-31 halftime lead. Fellow freshman AmberPorterfinishedwithcareer-highsof23points,15rebounds, and six blocks. Cherisse Burris (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Jama Sharp (14 points, 10 assists) also had double-double performances. Sasha Sims added 13 pointstogivetheHattersfiveplayersindoublefigures.

Coach Bria: “The response from the last game was great. I thought we did a great job of sharing the basketball. We had quite a few possessions where we made the extra pass and found the open person. I thought Amber and (Brianti) carried us in the first half. In the second half Amber hit some really key baskets when we turned the ball over for a little bit. Amber was open and got a couple of ‘and-ones’ that really kept the gap.”

Game Notes: The 101 points is a team-high in the Atlantic Sun this year, surpassing the Hatters’ 90-point game vs. Indiana State ... Saunders’s 30-point game is an individual high in the Atlantic Sun this year. She had 22 in the first half alone ... The last Hatter to score 30 points or more in a game was Victoria McGowan (33) at Kennesaw State this past January ... Porter’s 15 rebounds was the most by a Hatter since Natasha Graboski had 15 vs. Georgia Southern in 2010 ... Porter’s six blocks ties for the third-most in school history and is the most since Joslyn Giles blocked eight shots vs. Bethune-Cookman in 2002 ... Stetson freshmen combined for 62 points as DeAsia Beal (5) and Sydni Davis (4) added to Saunders and Porter’s totals ... Stetson had five players in double figures for the second time this season ... Jama Sharp dished out 10 assists for the third time this season ...The Hatters shot 67% in the first half en route to 55 points.

Porter finishedwith a near triple-double, adding 17 reboundsand a school-record-tying eight blocks.

Coach Bria: “The first five minutes establishes the tone of the game. We were just on fire. We were hitting shots from the perimeter, we were getting inside, and we were getting stops. I thought our energy was very good to start the game. I was really pleased with our effort in the beginning.”

Brianti Saunders scored 22 points and Sasha Sims added 16 for the Hatters, who had their two-game win streak come to an end.

Coach Bria: “Overall our effort was good. We could have laid down and died but we didn’t. We came back, we fought, and we put ourselves in a position to force overtime. We executed what we needed to do down the stretch. Jama had a great look and hit the front of the rim, so it was lined up well.”
