Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord
Human beings are united in their suffering. When we find ourselves in a painful moment, our first reaction is “why me?” as if we are the only person on earth who ever encountered this challenge. Going through life with a “why me” attitude only finds us wallowing in the mire of self-pity and never seizing opportunities or graces. We walk in solidarity with every human being in the experience of suffering. Believing that the goal of life is the elimination or avoidance of suffering is simply an illusion that keeps us entrenched in a collective myth. This myth distorts us and limits us.
There are living witnesses among us showing how courage and determination can overcome any degree of hardship, pain, loss, or tragedy. Folks finding the normalcy of their lives suddenly torn asunder are faced with options: opportunity or despair, stay or leave. Jesus stands before us as the prime example of endurance and perseverance. He is the One who showed humility through both the triumphs of life (by learning to be humble) and the tragedies and injustices (by learning how to be obedient). To secular ears, this may be perceived as nonsense. But to those with the eyes of faith, they are pearls of great price.
True humility tempers the temptation we have to become complacent and prevents an excessive relishing of life’s successes and affirmations. Learning obedience keeps us faithful to our relationship with God so that we can find the courage to endure any depth of hardship, disappointment, betrayal, or agony. While we may want our cup of suffering to be taken away, it simply cannot be. Somehow and somewhere in the seemingly opposing experiences life can deal us, God is present with His reassuring, compassionate, empowering, and persevering love. To be true to who we are and who God is, we must take up the cross of suffering, even when it’s the hardest and most apparently senseless thing to do.
Only our soul can understand these things, but our minds cannot, so they continue to run to secular ideas and solutions to pain and hardship. It goes without saying that we need to do all we can to eliminate as much senseless, unjust suffering as possible. Hunger, violence, abuse, exploitation, rejection, prejudice, homelessness, disrespect for life, and a whole host of other sins all result in suffering that is within our control. Then, when we face the uncontrollable kind of suffering or find ourselves the victim of injustice, what do we do?

Why do Catholics make the sign of the cross? The sign of the cross is a devotional practice that dates back to the first Apostles. When making the sign of the cross, we remember Jesus Christ who died for us and also bear witness to the fact that we belong to him and are called to share the Good News to all the world. At our Baptism, we were signed with a cross and marked for Christ. That mark remains on us throughout the entirety of our lives. We remind ourselves that to be a Christian means we are to “put on Christ” and be Christ for a world that needs to know him.

CHILDREN’S & YOUTH M I N I S T R Y
Today is the final Sunday of Lent and the beginning
of Holy Week. Christians all over the world are
united in recognizing the solemnity of this week
especially this year as the whole world faces the
corona virus pandemic. We join our fellow Catholics in
faithfully commemorating the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and his
triumphant resurrection through the special rites instituted in
the Church and the symbols and traditions that deepen our
understanding of the Gospel and the Catholic faith.
NOTE: Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, there are changes in the
traditional conduct of the Holy Week liturgies per guidance provided by
the Diocese of Dallas. These are noted here where applicable.
This Palm Sunday, we commemorate the arrival of
Jesus Christ in Jerusalem days before He was
crucified by carrying palms into the Church.
In the Gospel, the people of Jerusalem paid homage
to Jesus by waving palm branches which are
symbols of peace and victory. The liturgical color is red to
symbolize the blood of Jesus’ sacrifice. As we celebrate Palm
Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, we are reminded that Lent is
coming to close and the Resurrection is nearing. This year, there
will be no Mass at the Church and no distribution of blessed palms.
The Chrism Mass manifests the unity of the priests with their
bishop. During this Mass the bishop blesses three oils — the
oil of catechumens, the oil of the sick and holy chrism —
which will be used in the administration of the sacraments
throughout the diocese for the year. This is traditionally held in
our diocese on the Tuesday of Holy Week. This will be postponed for a
later date and oils blessed from the previous year will be used.
The summit of the Liturgical Year is the Easter Triduum—
from the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy
Thursday, reaches its high point in the Easter Vigil, and closes
with Evening Prayer on Easter Sunday. Though
chronologically three days, they are liturgically one day
unfolding for us the unity of Christ’s Paschal Mystery. The
single celebration of the Triduum marks the end of the Lenten
season, and leads to the Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord
at the Easter Vigil.

Mass of the Lord's Supper
on Holy Thursday (7:00 PM)
“... I have given you a model to follow, so that as I
have done for you, you should also do.” - Jn 13:15
The Holy Mass celebrated in the evening of Holy Thursday is
devoted to the remembrance of the Last Supper on the night
the Lord Jesus was betrayed. This Mass memorializes the
institution of the Eucharist and priesthood. The rite of the
washing of the feet is traditionally led by the pastor with
representatives from the congregation to demonstrate Christ’s
service and charity.
This year, the rite of the washing of the feet will be omitted. Additionally,
the Blessed Sacrament it to be kept in the tabernacle at the conclusion of
the Mass instead of being transferred from the Sanctuary to the Altar of
the Repose.
Good Friday of the Lord's Passion (7:00 PM)
For this happened so that the Scripture passage might be fulfilled: “Not a bone of it will be broken.” And again another passage says: “They will look upon him whom they have pierced.” - Jn 19:36
No Mass is celebrated on Good Friday. The Passion Gospel
from the Gospel of John is read by members of the clergy
with the participation of the congregation. The veneration of
the Cross is an important part of this celebration where the
congregation is invited to come forward and genuflect, touch
or kiss the Holy Cross. Communion is offered using the
Hosts that were consecrated during the Chrism Mass.
This year, as we participate in the liturgy in spirit, please pray specially
for the sick, the dead and for those who feel lost or sorrowful.
The Sacred Stillness of Holy Saturday
Between death and life, the time holds its breath. For the
first disciples, Holy Saturday was a day of silence, sorrow,
and waiting. But redemption is already beginning! Jesus
descends to the dead and frees righteous souls awaiting
eternal life. On our own Holy Saturdays, we too wait in
silence. But it is not the silence of disappointment and
confusion. It is the silence of anticipation. Soon and very
soon, dawn will alight on the horizon, and the stone will
be rolled back. Until then, we wait in stillness.
Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord
on Holy Saturday (8:30 PM)
“Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.” - Mt 28-10
The evening of Holy Saturday is the most sacred night when
our Lord Jesus Christ passed over from death to life. During
this vigil, we come together to watch and pray for His
triumphant resurrection. The evening includes the rites and
symbolisms of Easter— the blessing of fire, lighting of pascal
candle and blessing of baptismal water are some of them. We
join the catechumens in the renunciation of sin and
profession of faith. RCIA candidates receive and/or complete
their sacraments as well during the vigil. Easter is proclaimed
this evening and the Gloria and Alleluia is said or sung again
after being omitted during Lent.
This year, the preparation and lighting of the fire is omitted. Easter
sacraments for RICA candidates are to be postponed.
POPULAR DEVOTIONS
While we will not have the following at the Church for this year’s Holy
Week some of these can be prayerfully done at home with your family.
STATION OF THE CROSS
The Stations of the Cross are a 14-step Catholic devotion that
commemorates Jesus Christ's last days beginning with His
condemnation and ending with Jesus laid in the tomb after
his crucifixion. To pray Station of the Cross at home at home, please
download the booklet at: https://www.stjudeparish.com/stations-

LITURGY OF THE HOURS
The Liturgy of the Hours, or Divine Office, originated from
the early church when Christians prayed the Psalms every
three hours throughout the day and night. The Liturgy of the
Hours will consists of psalms, hymns and/or chants on the
mornings of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday.
BLESSING OF EASTER FOOD
The tradition of blessing Easter food is widely practiced in
Eastern European countries. Traditional foods are brought
for blessing to symbolize many important aspects of Easter.

Prayers from the Cross By Katie Dell, Youth Ministry Coordinator
Christ, removed from his community,
hung on the cross for the good of all.
The pain and the suffering He
endured, He knew would be given
back to the world as grace. How can
we this Lent be drawn closer to our
Lord when it seems like all avenues
for that have been taken away? With Masses and
events being canceled, we might feel that it is
impossible to truly enter into Lent this year, but it's
actually the opposite. We are being asked to enter into
Lent in a new way this year. This new way holds a lot of
beauty because we are able to deeper enter in to way of life
Christ was living right before His Passion. Jesus was
removed from his community and held in captivity, and in a
way we are being asked at this time to do that as well. We
have been asked to leave behind our communities and stay
within our homes for the greater good. But praise God for
the number of resources we have available to us for this
time of uncertainty. Amidst the unknown, one thing stands
steady before all of us - our Lord and his faithfulness to
those He loves. As we are being asked to distance ourselves
from this world, I urge you lean into our Lord. Pray with
the Mass readings and the many beautiful prayers the
Church has given us. Pray for our communities and the
world we live in. Just as Jesus prayed to the Father on the
cross, we are invited into prayer in our time of isolation.
Right now, as we hunger for the Eucharist, we have hope in
the glory of the Resurrection. I pray this Lent is one of great
reflection for our St. Jude community and I cannot wait to
celebrate our resurrected Lord with you all once again.
PERFECT CONTRITION https://www.cathdal.org/Perfect_Contrition[1].pdf
Act of Contrition
O my God, I am heartily sorry
for having offended Thee, and I
detest all my sins because of thy
just punishments, but most of all
because they offend Thee, my God,
who art all good and deserving of
all my love. I firmly resolve with the
help of Thy grace to sin no more
and to avoid the near occasion of sin.
Amen.

Prayer of Spiritual Communion by St. Alphonsus Liguori
My Jesus, I believe that you are present
in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things
and I desire you with all my heart.
Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,
I ask you to come spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you
as if you were already in my heart
and unite myself to you completely.
Please do not let me ever
be separated from you.
Pope Francis’ Prayer To Our Blessed Mother:
O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey
as a sign of salvation and hope.
We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick.
At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain,
with steadfast faith.
You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need.
We are certain that you will provide, so that,
as you did at Cana of Galilee,
joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial.
Help us, Mother of Divine Love,
to conform ourselves to the Father’s will
and to do what Jesus tells us:
He who took our sufferings upon Himself,
and bore our sorrows to bring us,
through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.
We seek refuge under your protection,
O Holy Mother of God.
Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test –
and deliver us from every danger,
O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Pope Francis’ Urbi et Orbi
Gospel: Mark (4:35-41)
At this special blessing, Pope Francis entrusted us all to the Lord, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, so that our faith might not waiver in this time of crisis.
“Dear brothers and sisters, from this place that tells of Peter’s rock-solid faith, I would like this evening to entrust all of you to the Lord, through the intercession of Mary, Health of the People and Star of the stormy Sea. From this colonnade that embraces Rome and the whole world, may God’s blessing come down upon you as a consoling embrace. Lord, may you bless the world, give health to our bodies and comfort our hearts. You ask us not to be afraid. Yet our faith is weak and we are fearful. But you, Lord, will not leave us at the mercy of the storm. Tell us again: ‘Do not be afraid’ (Mt 28:5). And we, together with Peter, ‘cast all our anxieties onto you, for you care about us’ (cf. 1Pet 5:7).”

PRAYERS DURING THE P ANDEMIC
Only begotten Son of the Father,
descended from heaven for our salvation …
We believe in you, O Lord
Holy Virgin of Guadalupe,
Queen of the Angels and
Mother of the Americas.
We fly to you today as your
beloved children.
We ask you to intercede
for us with your Son,
as you did at the wedding
in Cana.
Pray for us, loving Mother,
and gain for our nation
and world,
and for all our families and loved ones,
the protection of your holy angels,
that we may be spared the worst of this illness.
For those already afflicted,
we ask you to obtain
the grace of healing and deliverance.
Hear the cries of those
who are vulnerable and fearful,
wipe away their tears and help them to trust.
In this time of trial and testing,
teach all of us in the Church
to love one another and to be patient and kind.
Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land
and to our hearts.
We come to you with confidence,
knowing that you truly are
our compassionate mother,
health of the sick and cause of our joy.
Shelter us under the mantle of your protection,
keep us in the embrace of your arms,
help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus.
Amen.
