PRAYER FOR THE UPCOMING ELECTIONS
Lord God, as the election approaches, we seek tobetter understand the issues and concerns that confrontour country, and how the Gospel compels us to respondas faithful citizens in our community.
We ask for eyes that are free from blindness so that wemight see each other as brothers and sisters, one andequal in dignity, especially those who are victims ofabuse and violence, deceit and poverty.
We ask for ears that will hear the cries of childrenunborn and those abandoned, Men and womenoppressed because of race or creed, religion or gender.
We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearingthe voice of leaders who will bring us closer to yourKingdom.
We pray for discernment so that we may chooseleaders who hear your Word, live your love, and keepin the ways of your truth as they follow in the steps ofJesus and his Apostles and guide us to your Kingdomof justice and peace.
We ask this in the name of your Son Jesus Christ andthrough the power of the Holy Spirit.Amen.
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
One of my favorite saints, Therese of Lisieux, once wrote that “Trust and trust aloneshould lead us to love.”
That is a quote that is dear to my heart, especially since I received the call from CardinalDolan’s office last Friday evening asking me to be the new Temporary Administrator ofboth St. John the Evangelist in Pawling and St. Charles Borromeo in Dover Plains.
My name is Father Salvatore DeStefano and I was born in Brooklyn and raised on StatenIsland. On May 10, 2008, I was ordained a Priest for the Archdiocese of New York byEdward Cardinal Egan. Since then, I have served at the great parishes of Sts. John andPaul in Larchmont and most recently at St. Clare of Assisi in the Bronx. Both of theseassignments brought me great joy and peace, and I hope I was able to serve them wellas a Priest of Jesus Christ.
Now, I am so happy and excited to be coming to you, to have the honor of serving Godas YOUR priest. I am hoping that over time you will not hesitate to introduce yourselvesto me so that I can get to know each of you personally, that I may serve you better. I haveprayed a lot about this and I can truly tell you that I am filled with joyful anticipation andhope that my time here and yours will be grace-filled. Cardinal Dolan has assured me thatthis is a wonderful parish and that we have his support and his prayers as well.
Of course, there is one crucial thing you should know about me – I am a loyal Mets fan, which has brought me much suffering all throughout my adult life – but that’s for anotherdiscussion!
I will arrive on October 22nd for Mass in the evening and then the real work begins. I amsupremely confident that it is God’s will that has brought me here to the wonderful peopleof God in Pawling and Dover Plains. I look forward to meeting you and to listening to you
May God bless you and your beautiful families, now and always.
Fr. Salvatore DeStefano
