In this day of foodies and gourmet everything, it’s easy to think that healthy eating is expensive, exotic and time-consuming. It doesn’t have to be. As more and more people reach their senior years, it’s important to realize that you can make food choices within your budget that will help you live a healthier life.
That is the focus of a new education program being rolled out by the Mission Healthy Community Council.
“Health Without Wealth” will be trialled over the next year to help people understand how to make the healthiest choices possible within their means.
Healthy eating is important for preventing or managing chronic illness, maintaining a healthy immune system and having the
energy to enjoy your favourite activities.
As people age, they need fewer calories to maintain their weight, but still need at least the same level of
nutrients, and in some cases more.All Canadians need to try to
eat more fruits and vegetables. We’re only eating half of the amount we should for good health. Taking advantage of the
local bargains at the farmers’ market can help. This is the time
of year to stock up on fresh produce that you can preserve for the fall and winter.
If the bulk amounts they sell are too much, you can share with a friend. Buying fruit and vegetables locally and in season helps to keep the costs low, and the nutrient content higher.
Over time, produce will gradually lose some nutritional value. Fruits and vegetables that travel several thousand kilometers to your grocery store, will never have the same level of nutrients (or taste) as those that are picked and delivered the same day to the farmers’ market or grocer.

You can benefit from these extra nutrients by freezing what you don’t use right away. For berries (raspberries, blueberries, blackberries), just wash and quickly pat dry with a clean kitchen towel, and freeze them in a single layer on a tray or cookie sheet. Once frozen, put them in a self-closing freezer bag or other freezer safe container and
they will hold their shape. There’s no need to add sugar. Make the containers as airtight as you can. They will keep for three months in the fridge freezer compartment or up to 12 months in a chest freezer. To use, just add them to your cereal, smoothies or baking or have them as dessert.

A new housing option is soon to open in Mission thanks to MASH, a local non-profit charity. The society’s members are 9 organizations with the common goal of developing afford-able seniors housing options in Mission, working together since 1999.
MASH wants to make sure that everyone in Mission knows that Cedar Valley Manor is under construction near the corner of Cherry Ave. and Cedar St. in Mission. This four story, 42 unit life-lease apartment building will be ready for occupancy in September 2014. And, because it is a life-lease, there is no strata council to set up and run (and then have fights in). MASH will continue to provide ongoing management of the building, and no unexpected costs can be levied at residents, elimi-nating surprises related to housing costs.
Cedar Valley Manor is designed for people aged 55 and over who want to continue to be active in the community locally and beyond, but without having yard work and building maintenance concerns. 39 of the 42 units are 2 bedroom suites with a generous square footage and include in-suite laundry equipment, brand new kitchen appliances, walk-in showers, and in-suite storage. There is a large workshop in the basement for woodwork and similar activities and a good sized amenity room on the main floor for resident gatherings as well as larger family events. There are raised garden beds
included in the landscaping for those who wish to continue gardening without the concern of yard maintenance. And possibly most importantly, the building is pet friendly to “friendly pets”.
Construction has included top notch sound-proofing and fire protection systems, above and beyond that of the regular building code because of the commitment of MASH to the residents’ quality of life.
“We are excited to be able to have a display suite for the pub-lic to see because we know this will help folks visual-ize how they could make Cedar Valley Manor their new home”, says Judith Ray, president of the board of directors. “As volunteers, we have spent several years
bringing this project to fruition and are getting ready to celebrate with the community the completion of this first life-lease option in Mission.”
The Cedars Assisted Living project on Hurd Street was the first collective project of MASH and it opened in 2006. Because there are staff at The Cedars 24 hours a day, this also creates the opportunity to provide ready phone support for Cedar Valley Manor residents. MASH is calling this the ‘Cedar Valley Manor Connect’ and with one phone call, a person can access assistance for a building-related problem, a question regarding services in the community, or other is-sues they may be concerned about.

Men and women must alter their diets as they age. Portion sizes that young adults might have been able to get away must shrink when those same men and women enter their 30s. And as thirty-somethings head into their 40s, what’s on the plate requires more careful consideration than it might have a decade ago. The same goes for men and women over 50, who must take steps to reduce their risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes. One of the easiest ways to do just that is to eat healthy foods. The following are five flavourful and healthy foods tailor-made for the over 50 crowd.1. APPLES: Apples definitely qualify as a superfood, helping reduce cholesterol by preventing plaque buildup in the blood vessels and, as a result, cutting an individual’s
risk of diabetes considerably. In fact, a recent study published in the British Medical Journal found that eating at least two servings of apples per week can reduce a person’s risk of type 2 diabetes by as much as 23 per cent. Apples also make for a great source of fiber, potassium and vitamin C.2. BLUEBERRIES: Blueberries help men and women maintain healthy blood sugar levels because they are high in soluble fiber, which lowers cholesterol while slowing the body’s uptake of glucose. And despite their relatively small size, blueberries contain more fiber, vitamins and minerals per ounce than any other fruit.3. BROCCOLI: Though broccoli might not have been your best friend during childhood, you may want to cozy up to this powerful green vegetable now that you have
cracked the half-century mark. Broccoli is loaded with vitamin C. A single 3.5 ounce serving of broccoli contains more than 150 per cent of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C, which can shorten the duration of the common cold. In addition, a 2013 British study published in Medical News Today found that broccoli may help prevent osteoarthritis, a degeneration of joint cartilage and the underlying bone that is most common from middle age onward. A similar study from researchers at New York’s Roswell Park Cancer Institute published in the same publication six years earlier found that just three servings of broccoli per month can decrease bladder cancer risk by as much as 40 per cent.4. FAVA BEANS: Fava beans are cholesterol-free and low in fat. Fava beans also may
provide cardiovascular benefits and help men and women maintain healthy weights. Fava beans are considered “nutrient-dense,” a term used to describe low-calorie foods that boast lots of nutrients, and are an excellent source of vitamin B1, which is important for nervous system function and energy metabolism.5. OATMEAL: Another food that might never make youngsters’ lists of their favourite foods, oatmeal is nonetheless a healthy option at
the breakfast table. Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which can reduce cholesterol levels and subsequently reduce a person’s risk of heart disease. Also low in calories, oatmeal can help men and women maintain a healthy weight. Those who find oatmeal a tad too bland for their tastes can double on their superfoods by adding some blueberries into the mix, making their breakfast more flavourful and more healthy.

Most people love to get out on sunny, warm days for fun and to soak up the sun. But too much sun can be bad for your health. Approximately 80,000 Canadians every year are diagnosed with skin cancer. The sun however is very important to our health. It provides us with vitamin D which we need for our bones and it can lift our spirits. As with most good things, moderation and good sense is the key.
Applying sunscreen is one of the best ways to protect your skin form the harmful effects of Ultra Violet (UV) radiation. SPF stands for “Sun Protection Factor”. It measures how much the sunscreen protects you skin from UVB radiation (the suns radiation responsible for surface redness and pain of a sunburn). The SPF represents how much longer you can be in the sun before getting a burn. For example someone with exposed skin and no sunscreen starts to burn in 2 minutes. That same person wearing SPF 15 would be able to be exposed to the sun for 30 minutes before burning (SPF 15X 2mins). The ingredients in sunscreen can work in 2 different ways to shield your skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays. Physical ingredients reflect the light. Chemical ingredients absorb the light into themselves. Many formulas use both types of ingredients, called “broad spectrum”, this is the type most recommended. No sunscreen is waterproof. Even “water resistant” formulas must be reapplied after swimming or showering so remember to apply liberally (2-3 tablespoons) evenly over body after getting wet. Sunscreens do have an expiration
date so be sure to check the stamped date given on the bottle.
If you do get a sunburn treat by applying a cool compress for 24-48 hours. Drink lots of water to keep from feeling dehydrated. You can take pain medication if you experience pain. If you have blisters on the burn it is more severe and you should see a doctor. Ask your Live Well Pharmacist for advice on sunburn relief.
The Goal is to have fun while staying safe. Here are some basic rules:
• If you apply other products double check with your Pharmacist about which products to use first Example Insect repellent should be applied 15 minutes prior to sunscreen
• Cover up whenever possible • Avoid the sun at its peak between 11am to 4pm• Wear a hat whenever possible to keep sun’s rays off
the back of the neck, face and scalp. Prime areas for skin cancer
• Protect eyes by wearing sunglasses• Apply sunscreen 20 minutes prior to going out in
the sun and always use a minimum of SPF 15• If you take any prescription drugs check to see if
they can make you more sun sensitive. If you are not sure ask your Live Well Pharmacist
