As the Baby Boomer generation enters retirement age, there has

been an increased demand for services for this segment of the population. Amenities such as active living communities that boast top-of-the-line features typically are the first things individuals seek.

These home developments are a far cry from what they used to be and now rival some of the best resorts in their features and are designed entirely around the needs of a group of active, amenity-driven people. There are many choices with regard to active adult retirement communities from detached, single-family homes to villas and condominiums. Here are some of the benefits that these communities boast.

companionship.Due to the age-restricted nature of active-adult home developments, the residents are all in a similar

age range, and may have similar interests as well.

These homes are built to provide worry-free living. Included in the home ownership fees are provisions to take care of much of the interior and exterior maintenance. This peace of mind enables residents to pursue interests rather than worry

about the upkeep on their homes.

Many housing options available for seniors in MissionFrom previous page

The summer schedule has come to an end for the Mission Seniors Activity Centre.

This summer has been busier than normal. At least 25 enthusi-astic people attended Wednesday night bingo. The prizes were good and it has brought new people to the centre to enjoy our activities.

Bridge was a little lower in at-tendance but those that came en-joyed a rousing game, and the company of other seniors.  The tea, coffee, and cookies added to their enjoyment.

Wednesday morning crib saw a good crowd with an average of  eight tables playing. Crib is a very popular game and stimulates the mind. Many seniors live alone and need the company of others. What better way than a stimulat-ing game of crib?

MSAC will introduce floor curl-ing as a new activity this year. Floor curling can be done by ev-eryone.

We need a cart to store and move the supplies around.

If you have such a thing or the

ability to help us build one please contact the office.

The knitting social has been added to our weekly activities. It has a very useful goal, and a pleas-ing accomplishment  for partici-pants.

We need more volunteers to help with activities at our cen-tre. If you can help in any way we would be very grateful.  Please come by or phone the centre 604-814-2188.

FSNA is largest retiree group in CanadaThe Federal Superannuates National Association,

commonly called the FSNA, is the largest retiree group in Canada. It is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1963, and represents retirees from the public service, the RCMP, the Canadian Forces, and federally appointed judges.

There are 84 branches across Canada with close to 185,000 members. The national office is located in Ottawa. The purpose of the FSNA is to protect members’ retirement pension benefits such as the Public Service Health Care Plan and the Pensioners’ Dental Services Plan.

At the present time, the Treasury Board wants to decrease the medical benefits to 50 per cent from 75

per cent. If this happens federally, then it will not be long before all employees in all provinces and cit-ies and as well as private companies across this na-tion will have their benefits reduced as well. The FSNA is joining forces with provincial, municipal, medical associations, and other organizations across this country to prevent this from happening.

The FSNA advocates the rights of all seniors in Canada by meeting with members of parliament, MLAs, and local officials.

The Central Fraser Valley Branch of FSNA will meet next on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 1:30 p.m. The Christmas luncheon will be on Dec. 9 at 12 p.m. For more information call Gary at 604-820-9179.

more exclusive communities may have staff who can help with everything from booking vacations to helping with moving details. There also are developments that offer transitional homes, and someone may be available to help with the transition from an active-style home to one that has nursing staff or assisted living offerings at that time in life when it is needed.

There is an increasing number of choices available for independent living to accommodate Mission’s growing seniors population, including a new campus of care for seniors that is currently being constructed near Mission Memorial Hospital on Hurd Street.

Did you know that people wait an average of seven years before they seek solutions for hearing loss?

When we begin having trouble with our hearing it is common to think that others are not always speaking clearly or that the TV broadcast is not as clear or loud as it used to be. We may ask for repetition more often than normal and feel that we miss parts of the conversation.

It is also common to begin noticing trouble hearing in noisier environments before noticing trouble hearing in quieter places.

It is important to have our hearing checked on a regular basis so we are aware of these changes. People are in the habit of having their eyes checked every two to three years and hearing is no different.

A hearing test is simply a

comparison of our hearing to the accepted “normal range.”

We identify the softest sounds a person can hear and determine if there is a hearing loss present or not. It is an easy process and can give great insight into why we may be experiencing problems with

communication. The results of every hearing test are different and unique to the person being tested. Following the assessment, your hearing professional will review your individual results in detail and discuss options for solutions that are best suited to your

individual hearing needs.Mainland Hearing has been

working with Swing Optical on First Avenue over the past year.

We are happy to be able to serve Mission residents from a location that has been a part of the community for a long time (opened in 1985). Optometrist Dr. Lyndon Balisky has been practicing at the same location since February 2013. We are proud of our combined abilities to serve all of your vision and hearing needs from one location.

How it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fi ll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can fi gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numer-ic clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle. Look for the solution in next month’s puzzle section of Living 55 Plus.

Something To Smile About! This couple have something to smile about. They used to wear dentures, which caused discomfort, an inability to eat many foods

Now they enjoy the freedom of NobelSmile dental implants, which areas close to natural teeth as you can get. People who lose a tooth want to replace it with something permanent, says Dr. Lui, instead of something they have to remove. “Once you give someone new, permanent teeth, you can see their personality shine through again.”

“Whether you have a single tooth, several teeth or everyone of them missing...we can help.”
