Discursos hbridos
Mi investigacin actual pretende, de forma an ms
haban llegado a conocerse. Por ms que yo encuentre
Hybrid Discourses
My current research even more directly attem
to bridge the gap between what I call mainstr
contemporary art (MCA) and new media art (NMA)
goal is to forge a hybrid discourse that joins the
of both worlds, informing each other in a way th
mutually beneficial and fortuitous for art in gen
Inevitably, new media and the longer history of electrart will be recognized by MCA, once a potential marke
it is developed and promoted. [11] Proactively theor
the issues and stakes involved may play an impor
role in informing how that merger unfolds. As histo
of photography John Tagg has noted of the receptio
an earlier new media, the more experimental aspec
photography were not well-assimilated and the impa
the discourses of photography and contemporary a
each other was highly asymmetrical: the latter chan
very little, while the former lost its edge in the pro
of fitting in. [12] Ji-hoon Kim has further observed
despite the extraordinary assimilation of video by M
much experimental film and video, particularly the
of material championed by Gene Youngblood in Expa
Cinema (1970), and its progeny, has been excluded f
mainstream museum shows, while being celebrate
exhibitions held in new media contexts. [13] Needles
say, many in the NMA community are wary of losing
critical edge in the process of assimilation
For Art Basel in June 2011, I organized and chaired a p
discussion with Nicolas Bourriaud, Peter Weibel,
Michael Joaquin Grey, under the rubric, ContempoArt and New Media: Toward a Hybrid Discourse?.
That occasion demonstrated some challenges
bridging the gap between MCA and NMA. One simple
clear indication of this disconnect was the fact
Weibel, arguably the most powerful individual in the w
of NMA and Bourriaud, arguably the most influe
curator and theorist in the world of MCA, had never
before. Although I see significant parallels and over
between MCA and NMA (as do other theorists
curators), these worlds do not see eye-to-eye, no ma
how much they may share the rhetoric of interact
participation, and avant-gardism. Part of the challe
to reconciling these discourses may be related to
different historical narratives they adhere to and
divergent presents that are affirmed by them. I will a
that a narrative of contemporary art in which new m
is a central component demands a different history
includes a reappraisal of key monuments.

Discursos hbridos
Mi investigacin actual pretende, de forma an ms
haban llegado a conocerse. Por ms que yo encuentre
Hybrid Discourses
My current research even more directly attem
to bridge the gap between what I call mainstr
contemporary art (MCA) and new media art (NMA)
goal is to forge a hybrid discourse that joins the
of both worlds, informing each other in a way tha
mutually beneficial and fortuitous for art in gen
Inevitably, new media and the longer history of electrart will be recognized by MCA, once a potential marke
it is developed and promoted. [11] Proactively theor
the issues and stakes involved may play an impor
role in informing how that merger unfolds. As histo
of photography John Tagg has noted of the receptio
an earlier new media, the more experimental aspec
photography were not well-assimilated and the impa
the discourses of photography and contemporary a
each other was highly asymmetrical: the latter chan
very little, while the former lost its edge in the pro
of fitting in. [12] Ji-hoon Kim has further observed
despite the extraordinary assimilation of video by M
much experimental film and video, particularly the
of material championed by Gene Youngblood in Expa
Cinema (1970), and its progeny, has been excluded f
mainstream museum shows, while being celebrate
exhibitions held in new media contexts. [13] Needles
say, many in the NMA community are wary of losing
critical edge in the process of assimilation
For Art Basel in June 2011, I organized and chaired a p
discussion with Nicolas Bourriaud, Peter Weibel,
Michael Joaquin Grey, under the rubric, ContempoArt and New Media: Toward a Hybrid Discourse?.
That occasion demonstrated some challenges
bridging the gap between MCA and NMA. One simple
clear indication of this disconnect was the fact
Weibel, arguably the most powerful individual in the w
of NMA and Bourriaud, arguably the most influe
curator and theorist in the world of MCA, had never
before. Although I see significant parallels and over
between MCA and NMA (as do other theorists
curators), these worlds do not see eye-to-eye, no ma
how much they may share the rhetoric of interact
participation, and avant-gardism. Part of the chall
to reconciling these discourses may be related to
different historical narratives they adhere to and
divergent presents that are affirmed by them. I will a
that a narrative of contemporary art in which new m
is a central component demands a different history
includes a reappraisal of key monuments.
