The Big Read Is Underway, Join The ConversationCrestwood High School English teacher Mrs. Jami Cutlip
has partnered with Hiram College for this year’s Big Read event. Students in Honors English 12 classes will be reading Louis Alberto Urrea’s “Into the Beautiful North” at the same time as Hiram College students. Additionally, they will then participate in some of the many activities offered during the six-week event.
Other high school students as well as teachers, parents, and community members throughout the district and county are also encouraged to read the novel and join the conversation.
Designed to revitalize the role of l iterature in American culture and to encourage
citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment, the Big Read Program is made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
The story follows Nayeli, a courageous 19-year-old girl in a small Mexican village. After most of the town’s men, including Nayeli’s father, have gone north to the U.S. looking for work, and drug dealers have begun to move in, Nayeli believes she must do something extreme to protect her home from the banditos. Inspired by the film The Magnificent
Seven, Nayeli and her friends vow to cross into the U.S. and bring back seven men to defend the village.
With only their hope and ingenuity to sustain them, this group of young Mexicans will prompt readers to think about the very topical subject of immigration. In addition to portraying many pitfalls of illegal immigration, the novel is full of humor, all of which will lead to lively discussions.
Beginning with a kick-off event on Thursday, Sept. 17, Hiram has organized a series of events related to this year’s book. For a complete list of events visit www.hiram.edu/big-read. Extra copies of the book are available at libraries throughout Portage County as well as at several events. Mrs. Cutlip also has a few spare copies of the book for interested participants.
Two “book chats” have been scheduled at Crestwood High School. The first took place on Monday, September 28, 2015 from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. in room #117. A second chat will occur three weeks later on October 19, same place and time. Please feel free to join Mrs. Cutlip and her students for these discussions.

Seminar Students Welcome Guest Speakers
Crestwood Students Accepted in Ohio Attorney General’s Teen Ambassador Program
Sam Oliphant, CHS Senior, and Karli Bigler, CHS Junior, were both recently accepted into The Ohio Attorney General’s Teen Ambassador Program. This opportunity was presented to these two students through the Crestwood Academy Program. Sam and Karli will travel to Columbus twice this year to look inside our laws and government. This program aims to provide Ohio’s future leaders with the knowledge of how to solve issues that have impacted teenagers all over the country, such as stress, suicide and distracted driving. Sam and Karli will be communicating monthly with other high school students from northeast Ohio to address the issue of drug and alcohol use among Ohio teenagers. Both students hope to use this experience to make an impact on their community
Ms. Christine Spencer’s Junior-Senior Seminar classes recently welcomed several guests from the Portage County area and local community.
Junior-Senior Seminar is a project-based service learning class in which students create community service projects related to an area about which they feel passionate. To aid students in this effort, several guest speakers are often invited each year to present information about their organizations as well as give students ideas about potential service projects.
This year, students had the privilege of meeting with community and/or CLS members Jo Cobb (CIS), Dr. Edie Benner (Downtown Mantua Revitalization Corporation), Lynn Harvey (Mantua Zoning Commission and Mantua Restoration Society, Inc.), and Jill Rowe and Priscilla Alcorn (CLS Central Office). Students also welcomed guests Diana Zuranski (Portage Habitat for Humanity) and Lieutenants Justin and Marsha Barter (The Salvation Army of Ravenna). We appreciate all that our community members and volunteer organizations do for our community!

Update on Ohio’s Third Grade Reading Guarantee
The third grade is an important milestone in a child’s education. A student must possess good, basic reading skills by the end of grade 3 as a basis for learning in higher grades. Research shows that youngsters who enter grade 4 without proper reading skills are at least four times more likely to drop out of high school. Two years ago, Crestwood Local Schools began implementing the Third Grade Reading Guarantee. The state law requires schools to assess the reading skills of K-3 students at the beginning of each school year and provide extra help to those who are behind. If your student is in third grade for the first time this year, he or she will soon take Ohio’s State Test in English Language Arts during the first weeks in December. Students must meet a minimum score on the state test either in the Fall or Spring to move on to the fourth grade. The minimum score for the 2015-2106 is forthcoming.

Students and Community Members Unite for Celebrate Portage! Volunteer Day
Tuesday, September 8, was Celebrate Portage! Volunteer Day. Volunteers came together from across the county to participate in a day of service and giving back to communities. To take part in this effort the Downtown Mantua Revitalization Corporation, headed by Dr. Edie Benner, coordinated the Fall Clean-Up Day in which several CHS clubs and classes participated. Members of the FCCLA classes, Leadership class, National Honor Society (NHS), Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), Student Council, and Junior-Senior Seminar classes all participated in sprucing up the downtown Mantua area. Approximately 70 students took part in painting benches, washing windows, pulling weeds, painting playground equipment, sweeping, raking, and picking up trash.
“The students did an amazing job at sprucing up the downtown,” said Dr. Benner. “All the students worked hard and should be proud of what they accomplished. I’ve had so many residents comment on how nice and clean the downtown looks. It was great seeing so many students involved in our downtown clean-up day!”
This is a great day of bringing our schools and community members together for a unified cause. Thank you to all the volunteers who participated!

Keri Fisher, SeniorFor years students have thought that in order to learn an
instrument they needed to join band, but now offered at CHS is Ukulele Ensemble. Taught by Miss Miller and Mr. Page, this new and exciting class teaches students the basics of how to play the ukulele. This class is one semester long, counting as a half credit of fine arts. Many students enjoy this opportunity to try something new.
Students will learn to read sheet music and play the ukulele by themselves and together as a class. Daily routines include tuning the ukulele, playing scales, reading sheet music, and learning new songs together. Students in the class have positive attitudes and enjoy the learning experience.
“Ukulele is the equivalent to life!” states Emma Kotkowski, who enjoys the class.
One of the requirements for the class is to compose a chordal piece. This project consists of students learning a school-appropriate song and performing it in front of the class. If the song involves singing, then the performer must do so or

hum the voice part. At the end of the semester there will be a concert in the band room, where friends and family can watch both classes come together and play as a whole. If you would like to attend, the concert will be held on December, 10 at 7:00 p.m.
7th Grade Still Life ValueCapturing reality takes extreme focus and coordination.
In this “technical drawing” unit, the goal is to be able to take a still life, in three-dimensional space, and transfer that information onto a flat piece of paper. By using reference points for proportion, and using basic design knowledge from last year, students created a realistic rendition of what they saw in front
of them. Students learned that drawing is a 5-step process. (Mapping out space gesturally, mapping out shading for form “modeling”, develop negative space, and the detail/refine stage)
After mastering the 5 step drawing p r o c e s s , a n d understanding how to set up a composition w i t h p r o p e r proportions, students moved to color values. The students had to choose colors that represented light and dark values and use them to create a colorful piece that if put in black in white would still reveal
accurate direction of light. Pictured, are some of the works from the unit.

Crestwood Launches “Crestwood Cares” Program
This school year Crestwood Local Schools has launched a “Crestwood Cares” Program. This program is designed to cre-ate a culture within the schools that promotes a caring learning environment helping students realize social, emotional and academic success. The program is based on a widely embraced approach called Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS).
Last year the district formed a district-wide PBIS team to design the program. The team developed the “Crestwood Cares” program, which lays out specific age-appropriate behavioral expectations for students throughout the district. Expectations are specific for different areas of the buildings like hallway, classroom, and lunchroom, as well as on the bus. They are broken into three categories: Care for Self, Care for Others and Care for Building. As part of the program, students who are “caught” demonstrating exemplary behavior and caring for either self, others or building are rewarded with a Crestwood Care Card. Students are then entered into a drawing to receive additional rewards for their exemplary behavior.
The program is off to a great start and principals are already seeing an improved culture of caring in the buildings. If you would like more information about specific building programs, contact the building principal.
It was a frigid windy day when we celebrated Pinwheels For Peace. There were songs, poems and even a helicopter. There were a lot of people with pinwheels, including parents! The fifth graders read poems and sang songs. Then, we formed a huge peace symbol on the ground. There were go pro hero 3 cameras everywhere. The helicopter flew around us taking pictures of us making the peace sign on the playground. The police dog named Diablo and the police even came out to join us. We planted 900 pinwheels between the Intermediate and Primary Schools to celebrate the International Day of Peace. Last year there were 4.5 million colorful pinwheels planted all over the world. It was so fun celebrating pinwheels for peace.

CIS Getting to Know You Days a SuccessWe have had a strong start to the 2015-2016 school year.
Our “Getting To Know You” Days allowed us to roll out our new Positive Behavior Intervention System: “Crestwood Cares For Others… For School… For Self” to smaller groups of students. Teachers were able to model the behavior expected on the bus, in the hallways, recess, lunchtimes… during the first few days. In addition to this, teachers used the time to get to know their students on a more personal level and have them take a few assessments to see where their Reading and Math levels are. Through our PBIS model, students will be awarded “Crestwood Care” cards when seen demonstrating care for others, school and/or self. Cards are placed in a box and one winner per grade level is drawn every other week. Students are able to choose from our list of rewards. Our goal is to promote positive behavior and improve our attendance rates for CPS and CIS for this year and years to come.
Ms. Viers’s class was excited to release 2 monarch butterflies into the world! We watched Potato Chip and Joy (as the class named them) change from caterpillars to butterflies. We are learning in social studies about responsibility and respect for others, self and school.
W a t c h i n g t h e caterpillar go through changes, we were able to d iscuss personal changes in our selves. The butterflies’ struggle to emerge from their chrysalis strengthened their wings and allowed them to fly. The struggles that we may go through when we are learning something new, trying to get along with others, make good choices and take responsibility for the bad ones also will make us stronger second graders, and we too can soar! A special thanks to Isabelle Brugmann for collecting and sharing them with us and also Bella and Austin Wurm who were wonderful butterfly babysitters over the long Labor Day weekend!

Superintendent Takes One For The Team!

For the second time Superintendent (and Rotarian) Dave Toth took a PIE IN THE FACE to raise money for the Rotary Club of Mantua at it’s 2nd Annual Celebrity Pie Auction This year. Dave seemed to be really enjoying the whipped cream graham cracker smash! Senior Isabel Hysing gave her sup-port by filling the pies for bidders and created a Go Fund Me Account to help the club raise money for Slovoville South Africa, which provides the impoverished community with solar- powered lanterns and clean cook stoves as they have no electricity or running water. The school further gave sup-port with the help of Antonella Ramos the club’s sponsored Foreign Exchange Student along with students who helped serve up pierogis at the club’s food trailer! Proceeds from the events will support Crestwood scholarships, awards and the South Africa project. Please go to http://www.gofundme.com/HelpSlovoville to be part of the solution to change the lives of people and support Isabel as well!

3rd Grade Students, Having Fun with Reading, Writing and Math
Third grade is a busy place. We are working to improve our fluency by reading with partners, in small groups, and to ourselves. We have been looking closely at wonderful narratives written by some of our favorite authors like Cynthia Rylant and Patricia Polacco to see how authors tell their story. We are then using what we have learned to craft our own stories in writing workshop. In math we are learning to use differ-ent strategies to solve addition problems, helping us to have a more flexible understanding of numbers. We are looking forward to a fantastic year!
Bus Safety ReminderIf your child rides a bus, please have
your house numbers on mailboxes (both sides) so all bus drivers, safety and fire departments can find the house.
