Strategic Plan
ADA NSW Council has recently adopted a new Strategic Plan that sets the direction and priorities of the Branch for the next three years. A Strategic Plan is important for any organisation, and details where the organisation is going over the next few years and how it is going to get there.

Our vision and mission are underpinned by our values: integrity, respect, professionalism, teamwork and excellence.
In developing the Strategic Plan, ADA NSW Council recognises that it is a challenging time for associations, with the fundamental model of membership changing. In all sectors, not just

It is essential that the Association provides services and information that are relevant to all members, at varying stages of their professional careers and in different types of practice. This goal incorporates strategies to maintain and increase the relevance of ADA NSW and to retain, and attract new, members.

to enhancing oral health awareness amongst teenagers and highlighting some of the oral health impacts of sugary drinks, smoking and eating disorders. Protecting Teen Teeth, www.protectingteenteeth.com.au, includes engaging videos, graphics and resources to highlight ways in which teens can avoid damaging their teeth at an early age, and help safeguard their oral health in consultation with their dentist. This resource was developed in collaboration with clinical advisors, focus groups and government agencies and is intended to deliver key messages to teens regarding oral health, and to empower individuals to make informed decisions about smoking, eating disorders and the consumption of sports and energy drinks.
Protecting Teen Teeth builds on our Protecting Tiny Teeth resource that was launched last year to promote the oral health of infants, toddlers and children through education of their carers. The intended audience for Protecting Tiny Teeth is prospective parents, parents, grandparents, family members and other carers of babies and young children, including professionals. The video can be viewed at www.protectingtinyteeth.com.au.

Recent Graduates Working overseas Written by: Dr James Tran
Working in developed countries
USA
• Since 2003, foreign dentists must attend a 2–3 year, American Dental Association approved USA-based university course to obtain a Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree, combined with passing the National Board Dental Exams I and II
• The exception is Minnesota, where you can work without going back to school. However, you may only work in university hospitals or community health centres. It also takes almost a year for applications to be processed
• Chances of getting a job are good in most states.
UK
• For those graduating after 2001, entry is only via an exam, either the Overseas Registration Exam or the License in Dental Surgery Exam. If you want to work in the public health system for the National Health Service, you must live in the UK for a year before you can do this
•
Canada
• Graduates of Australian universities after 2010 may sit the National Dental Examination Baord exams directly
• Those graduating before 2010 may either do a degree in Canada or sit a series of extra examinations
• Exams have recently started to be held in Sydney near the end of the year
• You may only work for four years before getting residency or citizenship
• Singapore
• A popular choice, close to home. Ten-to twelve-hour days are the norm
• Australian universities recognised by the Singapore Dental Council (SDC) are Adelaide, Melbourne, Queensland, Sydney and WA. SDC do not recognise CSU,
• You may be required to sit an exam as
regulations have tightened up • Employers are only allowed to hire two
foreign graduates per local supervising dentist
• although the ability to speak Mandarin would improve those chances.
Volunteer/short-term work
Most volunteer programs involve a select number of weeks working in a rural area of the country. Often a makeshift dental surgery is set up with basic restorative work, extractions and treatments provided. Use of the Atraumatic Restorative Technique (ART) is common. You will need to cover costs for supplies, and accommodation and transport.
Looking at the National ADA Inc projects page (www.ada.org.au/Volunteers/dental_volunteers.aspx), countries that you can work in include Cambodia, Laos, Mongolia, Vietnam, India, Thailand, Tonga, Nepal, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu.
Other companies or courses can offer even more opportunities. A great place to start is www.internationalvolunteer.ada.org/ where
South American countries.
There is dental care needed in most of these developing countries so what are you waiting for? Feel good and give back to the world!

In September 1991, anarchy broke out and after two evacuations to Uganda we decided to return to Australia. Despite our departure, the local people built the new dental centre which opened in June 1993 and which they named after my wife. Some years later, Ringo became the head dentist. The Henry Schein Halas Dental Company assisted a large fundraising project and the second Australian-sponsored dental clinic was opened in 2004. Thus, the wars indirectly caused the expansion of the dental work.
A third clinic opened in 2010, assisted by a team of Sydney University dental students and a new graduate, in a town called Mahagi, 100 km from Aru.
In 2010, the Anglican Bishop of Aru, Titre Ande PhD, gained government approval for a training institute to train medical nurses in practical skills. He asked for my help in inaugurating a dental faculty in the institute to train dental personnel to a level

We have already packed a forty-foot container full of 9 Adec dental chairs, dental equipment and consumables mostly provided generously at cost by Henry Schein Halas; supplies and furniture. A team from Australia headed by Keith Mentiplay will help me and my students to install the equipment, and train the students in its use and maintenance.
Our goal in the next four years is to see the dental students, some of them already with 10–20 years experience but no

Family Dental Care promote Dental Health Week Family Dental Care in Campbelltown has been involved in Dental Health Week since 2007, visiting local schools and preschools with dental puppets to show the children how to brush their teeth. This year, members of the practice went to St Helens Park Public School, Thomas Acres Public School, Little Schoolies (Casula), Bambi Kindergarten (Ingleburn) and Little Diggers (Holsworthy Army Barracks).
Seeing about 270 children, staff talked about good and bad foods and left goodie bags for the children to take home full of toothbrushes, toothpaste, information and other items. Colgate provided preschool packs too.
Family Dental Care also ran a competition using the colouring sheet available from www.dentalhealthweek.com.au, with the top 20 entrants winning movie passes for the local cinema, and had special t-shirts produced by Embroid Me at Ingleburn.

Dentistry in a different direction:member interview with Dr Sandra Meihubers
What factors made you decide to take up dentistry?
As a dental student, you worked with remote Aboriginal communities and decided your future lay in community-based work rather
to take the altruistic route rather than establish your own dental practice?
Having worked in the Aboriginal health services sector for many years, what have you found interesting about working with Aboriginal communities?
You have set up the Teeth and Toilets Program which aims to coordinate village-based oral health programs in schools in Nepal and Bangladesh while constructing toilet waste systems and organising availability of clean water. How did that come about?
What aspects of your work, in Australia and overseas, have you most enjoyed?
september_nsw_dentist.indd 18 26/08/2015 09:57
You have gained several awards such as the Alumni Award, University of Sydney, for achievement in community service. You also developed a Memorandum of Understanding between Bila Muuji Aboriginal Health Service and Charles Sturt University for a Bila Muuji scholarship to support undergraduate study. Do you enjoy the educational component of your work or would you prefer to spend more time on community project management?
How has ADA NSW been able to assist you?
Are there any other aspects of your career that you would like to share?

Questions
september_nsw_dentist.indd 20 26/08/2015 09:58
1. Is the dentist required to be physically on the premises when anyone in the team is treating patients, or merely contactable?
2. Should a hygienist/oral health therapist treat a new/existing patient prior to consultation with the dentist? (medical history assessment??)
Maybe the professional organisations representing these practitioners and the universities which train them have something worthwhile to offer on the subject of their approved Scope of Practice. Not sure whether or not anyone has sought their views.
To be fair, I should mention that the DBA Guidelines for Scope of Practice, June 2014 is required reading on this subject. It is the authoritative basis for the current standard and describes such aspects as:
Professional v Individual scope
Extension/expansion of scope (approved programs of study and programs to extend scope)
Requirements for collaborative treatment between dentists and prosthetist (for example, immediate dentures)
of essential staff/facility backup (for example, conscious sedation)
Effective communication with specialists, other general dentists and medical colleagues; appropriate and adequate referral protocols.

Human ResourcesBusiness restructuring and how it affects you: part 1 Written by: Michael Grasso – Workplace Relations Advisor Human Resources Advisory Services
26 Business restructuring and how it effects you – September 2015
When there is a downturn in business, your employer will naturally explore ways of reducing overheads. There are many strategies an employer can use, one in particular being restructuring. Restructuring can refer to reorganising roles, operations and lines of authority in an organisation to increase productivity and cost effectiveness. It may involve amalgamating roles, creating new roles or even making employees redundant. Redundancies sometimes trigger redeployments, where employees made redundant can be redeployed to an alternative role.
The restructuring process can be very stressful for all those involved, particularly for those who may be made redundant.
examine restructuring in more detail so you are aware of what to expect if you are involved in
the consultation process in more detail. In part two, in the October issue of , other aspects of the restructuring process, including redeployment, will be examined in more detail.
Consultation
For redundancy to be genuine, a role has to be eliminated because it is no longer needed. Genuine consultation is also required and it must
Modern awards and agreements all contain a standard clause that states employers are obliged to notify you of any major workplace change that may affect you. Employers must consult

changes will have on their employment. For consultation to be genuine, your employer should speak with you and your colleagues, and take suggestions from everyone about alternative restructuring ideas and how to minimise the negative effects of these changes in the company.

27Business restructuring and how it effects you – September 2015
Steps in the consultation process Step 1
Initially the employer will decide on the number of positions to be restructured. Where there is likely to be more than one redundancy, the initial consultation meeting will involve all employees in the affected team or department. The restructuring and operational reasons for why this restructure must occur need to be clearly explained to you, whether or not you personally will have to change roles. Voluntary redundancies, where the employee can choose to leave the
at this point if redundancy packages will be offered.
Step 2
Following this initial group consultation, the employer should meet with each employee individually to discuss how the planned changes will affect different jobs. If your position is likely to be made redundant, all alternatives including transfers and redeployments should be explored in discussion with you. In the case of Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union v Whitehaven Coal Limited [2014] FCCA 2657failure to consult with employees before making them redundant resulted in a $20,000 penalty paid to the union on top of the severance payments.
A discussion in advance of the changes represents procedural fairness, although joint decision making through consultation
the decision. Throughout these meetings, an employer can fairly evaluate which employees to make redundant based on objective criteria (see part two of this article for more information).
Step 3 A second individual meeting should then be conducted with employees who are being made redundant or redeployed, if that is an option. During this meeting, the reasons why your position is being made redundant and if there is more than one person performing your role, why you have been selected,
end date of your employment, and if applicable, offered a redundancy package.
announcement of restructuring should be made but there are fewer people who need to be consulted with. Your employer can go directly to the employees whose positions are going to be affected or made redundant. In small businesses of fewer than 15 employees, there is no entitlement to redundancy pay under the Fair Work Act 2009.
Note that that the requirement to consult and the consultation process are very similar for both national system employers under the Fair Work Act 2009 and employers of unincorporated businesses in WA under the WA Industrial Relations Act 1979. It is none the less advisable to contact the ADA HR Advisory Service if you are involved in a restructure and need further advice about the process.
For more information and advice on this article or any other workplace matter, contact the HR Advisory Service on 1300 232 462 (fax: (02) 8448 3299) between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm AEST Monday to Friday, or email your enquiry to [email protected]. 28 The 80th Annual Moxham Cup – September 2015
Hosted by ADA NSW, the Annnual Moxham Cup, instigated by Harry Moxham in 1929, is a highlight of the dental social calendar and attracts a keen following. The 80th Annual Moxham Cup was held at the Terrey Hills Golf and Country Club on

Luckily, we dodged the inclement weather of past weeks and were able to enjoy perfect conditions for 18 holes of golf. The course as usual was superb and we would like to congratulate the staff of Terrey Hills Golf and Country Club for their attention to detail. The fairways had a lot of run, but that meant the greens and surrounds were hard and fast. Many of us, myself included,

Our President, Dr Deb Cockrell, spoke about collegiality in dentistry. She presented the Moxham Cup to the 2015 winner, Tony Wasserman. Nada Jo was runner-up with Ian Norton taking out the Scratch prize.
I would also like to personally thank the Sports Committee, Phil Zoldan and Andy Prideaux, and Rosina Rocca and the staff at the ADA NSW for their invaluable assistance. The smooth running of the day was due to their efforts and attention to detail. We were able to reward those who took out a
