ADA NSW Council has recently adopted a new Strategic Plan that sets the direction and priorities of the Branch for the next three years. A Strategic Plan is important for any organisation, and details where the organisation is going over the next few years and how it is going to get there.

Protecting Teen Teeth

to enhancing oral health awareness amongst teenagers and highlighting some of the oral health impacts of sugary drinks, smoking and eating disorders. Protecting Teen Teeth, www.protectingteenteeth.com.au, includes engaging videos, graphics and resources to highlight ways in which teens can avoid damaging their teeth at an early age, and help safeguard their oral health in consultation with their dentist. This resource was developed in collaboration with clinical advisors, focus groups and government agencies and is intended to deliver key messages to teens regarding oral health, and to empower individuals to make informed decisions about smoking, eating disorders and the consumption of sports and energy drinks.

Protecting Teen Teeth builds on our Protecting Tiny Teeth resource that was launched last year to promote the oral health of infants, toddlers and children through education of their carers. The intended audience for Protecting Tiny Teeth is prospective parents, parents, grandparents, family members and other carers of babies and young children, including professionals. USA

• Since 2003, foreign dentists must attend a 2–3 year, American Dental Association approved USA-based university course to obtain a Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree, combined with passing the National Board Dental Exams I and II

• The exception is Minnesota, where you can work without going back to school. However, you may only work in university hospitals or community health centres. It also takes almost a year for applications to be processed

• Chances of getting a job are good in most states.

UK

• For those graduating after 2001, entry is only via an exam, either the Overseas Registration Exam or the License in Dental Surgery Exam. If you want to work in the public health system for the National Health Service, you must live in the UK for a year before you can do this

•

Canada

• Graduates of Australian universities after 2010 may sit the National Dental Examination Baord exams directly

• Those graduating before 2010 may either do a degree in Canada or sit a series of extra examinations

• Exams have recently started to be held in Sydney near the end of the year

• You may only work for four years before getting residency or citizenship

• Singapore

• A popular choice, close to home. Ten-to twelve-hour days are the norm

• Australian universities recognised by the Singapore Dental Council (SDC) are Adelaide, Melbourne, Queensland, Sydney and WA. SDC do not recognise CSU,

Volunteer/short-term work

Most volunteer programs involve a select number of weeks working in a rural area of the country. Often a makeshift dental surgery is set up with basic restorative work, extractions and treatments provided. Use of the Atraumatic Restorative Technique (ART) is common. You will need to cover costs for supplies, and accommodation and transport.

Looking at the National ADA Inc projects page (www.ada.org.au/Volunteers/dental_volunteers.aspx), countries that you can work in include Cambodia, Laos, Mongolia, Vietnam, India, Thailand, Tonga, Nepal, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu.

Back in 1988, after a few months, Timon Grodya and William Alimani, both medical nurses, arrived from an Anglican hospital

In September 1991, anarchy broke out and after two evacuations to Uganda we decided to return to Australia. Despite our departure, the local people built the new dental centre which opened in June 1993 and which they named after my wife. Some years later, Ringo became the head dentist. The Mama Wendy Dental Clinic is now well-known in the Province for safe, compassionate dental care and is still treating patients 22 years later.

The Two Congo Wars that occurred from 1996–2002 resulted

relocated to his tribal home, 600 km to the north, due to his family being at risk. In 2003, he emailed me asking for some basic equipment to do dental work in the Anglican Health Centre in Aru. The Henry Schein Halas Dental Company assisted a large fundraising project and the second Australian-sponsored dental clinic was opened in 2004. Thus, the wars indirectly caused the expansion of the dental work.

A third clinic opened in 2010, assisted by a team of Sydney University dental students and a new graduate, in a town called Mahagi, 100 km from Aru.

In 2010, the Anglican Bishop of Aru, Titre Ande PhD, gained government approval for a training institute to train medical nurses in practical skills. He asked for my help in inaugurating a dental faculty in the institute to train dental personnel to a level

Our goal in the next four years is to see the dental students, some of them already with 10–20 years experience but no

Family Dental Care promote Dental Health Week Family Dental Care in Campbelltown has been involved in Dental Health Week since 2007, visiting local schools and preschools with dental puppets to show the children how to brush their teeth. This year, members of the practice went to St Helens Park Public School, Thomas Acres Public School, Little Schoolies (Casula), Bambi Kindergarten (Ingleburn) and Little Diggers (Holsworthy Army Barracks).

Seeing about 270 children, staff talked about good and bad foods and left goodie bags for the children to take home full of toothbrushes, toothpaste, information and other items. Colgate provided preschool packs too.

Family Dental Care also ran a competition using the colouring sheet available from www.dentalhealthweek.com.au, with the top 20 entrants winning movie passes for the local cinema, and had special t-shirts produced by Embroid Me at Ingleburn.

NSW Health has released their NSW Teen Dental Survey 2010 at www.health.nsw.gov.au/oralhealth/Pages/teen-dental-survey.aspx. The survey investigates dental caries in teenagers 14–15-years-old to identify those most in need of healthcare.

As a dental student, you worked with remote Aboriginal communities and decided your future lay in community-based work rather

What aspects of your work, in Australia and overseas, have you most enjoyed?


You have gained several awards such as the Alumni Award, University of Sydney, for achievement in community service. You also developed a Memorandum of Understanding between Bila Muuji Aboriginal Health Service and Charles Sturt University for a Bila Muuji scholarship to support undergraduate study. Do you enjoy the educational component of your work or would you prefer to spend more time on community project management?

1. Is the dentist required to be physically on the premises when anyone in the team is treating patients, or merely contactable?

2. Should a hygienist/oral health therapist treat a new/existing patient prior to consultation with the dentist? (medical history assessment??)

Maybe the professional organisations representing these practitioners and the universities which train them have something worthwhile to offer on the subject of their approved Scope of Practice. Not sure whether or not anyone has sought their views.

To be fair, I should mention that the DBA Guidelines for Scope of Practice, June 2014 is required reading on this subject. It is the authoritative basis for the current standard and describes such aspects as:

Professional v Individual scope

Extension/expansion of scope (approved programs of study and programs to extend scope)

Requirements for collaborative treatment between dentists and prosthetist (for example, immediate dentures)

of essential staff/facility backup (for example, conscious sedation)

Effective communication with specialists, other general dentists and medical colleagues; appropriate and adequate referral protocols.

When there is a downturn in business, your employer will naturally explore ways of reducing overheads. There are many strategies an employer can use, one in particular being restructuring. Restructuring can refer to reorganising roles, operations and lines of authority in an organisation to increase productivity and cost effectiveness. It may involve amalgamating roles, creating new roles or even making employees redundant. Redundancies sometimes trigger redeployments, where employees made redundant can be redeployed to an alternative role.

The restructuring process can be very stressful for all those involved, particularly for those who may be made redundant.

Initially the employer will decide on the number of positions to be restructured. Where there is likely to be more than one redundancy, the initial consultation meeting will involve all employees in the affected team or department. The restructuring and operational reasons for why this restructure must occur need to be clearly explained to you, whether or not you personally will have to change roles.
